Chapter 27

It was around 10:45 the next morning, Sunday; and Luke was driving to pick up his little sister Jenny from her sleepover. He tried to explain to his parents about what happened, but like always they were too busy to care. What most people do not know about Luke and Jenny, is that their parents aren't ones to really be 'invested' in their lives. Sure they were they, they fed them, clothed them, gave them everything they needed; excepted for their attention. Luke felt personally responsible for how Jenny treated Elena and God knows who else because he was the one that spend the most time with her. And it wasn't until the day before, that he finally caught the realization.

*Flashback to the day before*

Luke was babysitting Jenny while their parents ran errands and instead of staying in their nice large, humble abode, he decided to take the young girl to the arcade that was located on the boardwalk.

While they were in the arcade, Jenny had asked if they could get something to eat. Luke went to the counter leaving Jenny alone but in line of sight.

As he was coming back with a couple slices of pizza, fries and sodas, he noticed that Jenny was sitting at the table, talking to a couple of her friends. They were too preoccupied to notice his upcoming presence, and as he was closer he could hear them saying horrible things about someone. He couldn't catch all of it but the words that stood out were 'fat', 'ugly' and 'her mother didn't even want her.' He didn't know who they were talking about but he hearing those words coming out of his baby sister's mouth, didn't sit well with him.

He sat the tray on the table and looked to her friends, but before he could speak, the two other girls stood up. "See you tonight Jenny." The red headed girl smiled and walked away, followed by the petite brunette.

Luke slide into the small, hard booth, across from Jenny, giving her a disappointed look, but she didn't know the reason for this expression.

She paused momentarily, holding a fry to her lips, staring back at him. "What?"

"I heard what you said."

"Umm…I've said a lot of things…you have to be a little bit more specific."

"About someone being fat, and ugly? And God knows what else." He sucked on the straw of his orange soda, feeling the carbonation hit his tongue.

"And?" She kept eye contact off of him, focusing on her lunch in front of her.

"Look at me Jenny."

Jenny sighed, but looked up at him, unamused.

Taking her silence as cooperation he continued, "You can't be saying that stuff about or to people. It's just not right."

She laughed, thinking he was just messing around, but seeing as his expression hardened, she gathered he was seriously. "Oh, you're the one to talk."

"What are you talking about?"

"Seriously Luke? You're relentless to that…curly haired kid…Sam…something."

"Who?"

"Sam…the one who's dating Summer…"

"His names Seth; and no I'm not."

She laughed. "Now I know you have to be kidding me. The last time I checked, queer was not a term of endearment." She started to eat her pizza, hoping he would drop it. She didn't think what she was doing to Elena was that bad. It's what kids do right? They tease each other.

Luke sat there, dumbfounded; Seth was the only one that he could think of that he was far from nice to. There may have been a few others that he teased but all because Summer chose to be with Seth instead of him, he made him his target. Now his little sister thinks it's okay to go around belittling people. He has to put an end to this somehow.

*Present Day*

Luke pulled up in the driveway, then made his way to the front door. His index finger was about to push the doorbell when the door swung open, Jenny standing there holding her stuff.

"Hey, I saw you walking up." She smiled slightly and headed towards his car. Luke was always the one to pick her up; but unbeknownst to her, this time would be different.

Luke loaded the trunk up with her stuff; getting back in and headed on their way. Instead of making a left out of the driveway like he would always do, he made a right, earning a look of question from Jenny.

"You turned the wrong way…"

"No I didn't." His tone was clipped, trying to wrack his brain for the right words to start with.

Keeping quiet, Jenny looked out the window, watching the other houses pass by, as they were going towards the main road.

"Who were you talking about yesterday at the arcade, when I came back with the food?" He was pretty sure of the answer already, but he needed confirmation from her.

She sighed snapping her head to look at him. "This again? Come on Luke it-"

He cut her off. "Who Jennifer Mae."

He rarely used her middle name but when he does, she knows not to mess around. With another slight sigh she answered him, "Elena Atwood…"

He nodded, his silence filling the car up quickly. "Why? Why do you do that Jenny?"

"Why do you?" She spat defensively.

He took a deep breath, he had to be honest with her, if he wanted her to reciprocate. "Honestly Jenny, it was because I was jealous. I was jealous that Summer chose Seth over me. They have what I want so badly to have, and I thought it was Summer who I wanted it with. But if you didn't tell me yesterday about how I treated him; I don't think I would have realized it myself."

Jenny was taken back. Seth was the only one she personally witnessed him being mean to. She was silent, looking down at her hands.

Luke continued to speak, "And you know what I did?" He quickly looked at her as he turned onto another street.

She shrugged. "what did you do?"

"I went to his house last night and apologized to him." He hoped that upon hearing this, Jenny would look at Luke in a different light.

"You did?"

He nodded, "Yes I did. I want to be a better person. I want to be better than…than mom and dad."

Her eyes grew just a tad, "Luke…you are better than them. You are. You are there for me. You care for me."

"Yes, but I was setting the worst example for you." His voice was filled with shame and embarrassment. "That is not how I want you to act; nor is it the way I want to act."

Jenny just stayed quiet, letting everything that was being said to her sink in.

He made his final turn, entering the parking lot of the hospital.

She looked up as he made the turn. She saw him park in a spot farthest from the entrance and kept the car running; so she thought maybe he just pulled in so they can talk a little more and not be distracted.

He took off his seatbelt and shifted in the driver's seat to face her. "Jenny…"

Jenny also took off he seatbelt, sitting crossed legged on the seat, facing him.

"Yeah?" Luke still had yet to find the right words to say to his sister; that her actions led another girl to end up in the hospital. "Luke, you're starting to freak me out…"

"I'm trying not to Jen." He took a deep breath, and exhaled slowly. "Okay; I'll just start from the beginning. Summer called me last night; about Elena."

"Is that how you found out it was her?"

He nodded; "Sort of; she called me because Elena was taken to the hospital; and they had found out it was because…" He paused looking away from her for a moment.

"because why Luke?"

He looked back up at her, taking her hand in his. "Jenny; Elena passed out last night; and it was because she was starving herself; and throwing up whenever she would eat." There was no good way to put it. "Summer told me it was because of what you would say to her,"

Jenny yanked her hand away; looking out her window. She didn't know what to say. She caused this? Sure she didn't tell Elena to do this, but its the stuff she said about her being fat; and what she shouldn't eat; it led to this. Tears threatened to spill over the brim of her eyes.

Keeping her gaze on the tree next to her window; she asked, "Is she okay?"

"As far as I know, she is okay but I do not know anymore." His voice softened. He saw something shift in her demeanor.

"I never meant-" She swallowed hard, trying to keep her tears at bay but having difficulty. She looked toward her brother; feeling a tear trail down her cheek. "I never meant for any of this to happen. I…I didn't!"

Luke pulled the pre-teen in a tight embrace, feeling her let go of all her emotions she's been holding inside. "I-I didn't meant what I said! I-I-what is wrong with me!" She weeped in his chest, not being able to fathom how she got like this.

He pressed his lips to the top of her head, rubbing small circles on her back.

She lifted her head and pulled from the comfort of the hug and used the back of her hands to wipe her tears. "I-I have to fix this.-somehow."

"It can start with an apology." Luke expressed gently.

She sniffled as her cries started to subside slightly. "But-how can she forgive me? She probably hates me, and I don't blame her. I mean, I hate myself"

Luke cradled her head in his hands, peering right into her brown eyes. "Jenny; listen to me; the first step to making anything right is an apology. You do that; and then we go from there okay? I promise I will be there will you the whole way."

The twelve year old blinked away more tears that stung her eyes; nodding. Luke placed another kiss to her forehead before he put the car in reverse, to move to a closer parking spot.

Once they parked they walked into the lobby of the hospital. Jenny wasn't a fan of the hospital but who was. It was the smell that really got to her. She looked around, seeing the small gift shop, in the corner of the lobby. "I want to get her something."

Luke looked over where she was looking and gave a nod. "Okay," a small smiled flashed over his lips.

After about five minutes in the shop, Jenny was very satisfied with her purchase. She walked out of the gift shop with a teddy bear that was about 10 inches tall, holding a card that she will write a message in.

Sandy, Kirsten, Seth, Ryan and Trey were gathered in Elena's room, as the young girl slept. She didn't have a great night. Around 1 in the morning, she started to vomit for about an hour ; and since her stomach was empty, she was throwing up bile. The doctors strongly believe that it was the effects from her concussion that was causing her to vomit; although it was several hours after the her fall.

The poor girl was exhausted and in a lot of pain, so the nurses have been giving her, her medication like clock work to keep the pain and discomfort at bay.

This time around they gave her a small sedative so she was able to relax and rest.

The four of them just sat around her bed; not saying a word. Between being exhausted and emotionally spent; they didn't want to disturb her by talking.

Ryan kept his gaze on his baby sister, looking so little in that bed. He felt so guilty that he didn't know how bad things were. Trey was right; he was supposed to protect her from things like this. He knew Trey didn't really blame him; but Ryan did blame himself. But the doctors assured them over and over that she will make a full recovery; physically. It's the mental and emotional part that will take some time.

Ryan was shaken from his thoughts when he heard a light knock on the door. He turned his head, seeing Luke standing there with whom he gathered was his sister Jenny.

He wanted to be so angry with the young girl, but when he got a look at her face; he saw immediate remorse. He excused himself from his family and went into the hallway with Luke and Jenny, closing the door behind him.

There was a short awkward pause between the three of them, neither of the knowing what to say right away.

"How is Elena?" Luke asked breaking the awkward silence.

"She had a very rough morning early this morning, but she's resting now. The doctors say she will make a full recovery."

Jenny looked at her feet trying to hide the oncoming tears again; but looked back up at Ryan. "I know you and everyone probably hate me; but I want you to know; I want Elena to know how sorry I am. I vow right here, right now that I am going to be a better person."

Ryan was speechless. This didn't seem like the same girl Caitlin was telling him about; but Luke must have gotten through to her. He did come to his house the night before; on his own to apologize.

Ryan nodded; he can see she was remorseful but he wasn't ready to fully accept the apology; not yet. "I appreciate you coming here, and apologizing. Like I mentioned, she is sleeping right now, but you are welcome to wait around."

Luke looked to Jenny to see what she wanted to do.

She thought a moment and looked at her brother. "um, maybe we can go get something to eat and then come back?" She looked to Ryan "Would that be okay?"

Ryan nodded. "Yes that would be okay. Luke how about you give me your cell number and I'll text you when she does wake up." He fished his phone out of his jean's pocket and handed it over to Luke.

Within moment, Luke typed in his info and handed the phone back to him.

"We will see you later Ryan." He said and started to leave with his sister.

"Jenny?" Ryan called out.

She paused hearing him say her name. She turned on her heel, looking toward him, staying silent. She wasn't sure what to expect him to say, but what he did say, wasn't one of them.

"I don't hate you." His expression was unreadable but his words were true.

The twelve year old was hopeful that things might start to be okay after all; step by step.
