"So Elizabeth, Will says you are striving to be the next Consul?"
Linette brought up to try and ease the awkward silence. The others had gone to gather the London residents while Linette stayed with Will's sister Elizabeth.
"Yes, it's hard work, learning all the politics that is, but to be the first Consul Carstairs would be amazing. I like the fact that I get to keep my own name then."
It was really easy to talk to Elizabeth; see did most of the talking but nonetheless.
"Yeah, I wish I could keep Lightwood."
She looked confused, "Would you not keep Cartwright or Penhallow? Why Lightwood?"
"I never had any right to Penhallow plus it holds so much pain." Linette unconsciously reached for the rune her and her sister once shared.
"And I am not even a Cartwright, those parents wanted me dead. So I chose Lightwood, it means a fresh start."
Elizabeth nodded in understanding; just then Charlotte and Henry came back into the library. Charlotte stepped forward, "What happened? Did the portal fail?"
"Not exactly it worked perfectly; however before they could go through, Will's sister and Alec's children came through."
Linette turned to Elizabeth, "Elizabeth, meet Charlotte Fairchild, the first women Consul. Charlotte, Elizabeth Carstairs."
Elizabeth excitedly walked towards Charlotte, "Consul, it is an honor to meet you. You have been an inspiration to shadowhunting women for the past century."
Charlotte smiled warmly, "It is good to hear that someone appreciate my work."
"Appreciate? You are amazing, my dad said you ran the institute when you were only nineteen, and better than any man I hear. Holding your own against a men dominated profession, that takes strength. When you took my parents in they say you treated them as if they belonged immediately."
"Well thank you Elizabeth, but I have only just met your father and yet to have met your mother."
Linette silently willed Elizabeth to stop asking questions, but it failed.
"My father spent years of his life here and so did my mother."
"I have lived in the London Institute my whole life, and not once has a Stephen Carstairs ever walked these hall except for the pat week."
"Stephen? My parents are James and Tessa Carstairs and they both lived in London, this is were they met."
Linette panicked and snapped her fingers causing Elizabeth to faint into her. The others then came into the library, "Linette! What did you do to my sister?!"
"She started to ramble on about your dad, don't worry she is just asleep."
Charlotte, still in shock, finally spoke, "That's impossible, Jem is dead."
As if on cue Jem, Tessa, and Will Herondale walk in. "Charlotte we have some important news."
"By the way your wife is looking at the him, I assume that it really is Jem."
"How did you know?"
"Your daughter told me. Trying to prove herself right. She is very smart, and she will make a good Consul."
Cordelia finally spoke up, "Wait, what is happening?"
Jem smiled, "I guess you never got a chance to meet me before I entered the Brotherhood. I am James Carstairs, my father was Jonah, your uncle, making me your cousin."
She smiled, "You look just like Elias, except the hair and eyes of course."
"So this is who you were named after Jamie." Matthew sais with a smile as James Herondale smacked him on the arm.
Bridget came briskly into the library, "Mr. Herondale, guests are arriving. The Penhallows are in the entry hall."
Will's eyes widened, "Of course Christmas Eve is in two days. It is a masquerade this year. Now perhaps everyone should go back to their false names, the last thing we need is the Enclave knowing about this." He walked out of the room to greet his guests, followed by Tessa , and the other residents of the Institute.
Jem spoke up, "Let's go over names and stories again. Elizabeth, our last name is Graymark, and my name is Stephen. Lightwoods, you are Blackwells. Linette, you are Alec's niece and Williams fiancée."
She glanced over at Will who looked at her with sorrow. "Clary you will be a Fray once more. Everyone set?"
They all nodded and exited where everyone else did moments ago. Linette was still exhausted from the spell, and decided to go rest. She made it up to her room, closed the blinds and through herself onto the bed.
A few minutes past when she heard someone enter the room. She through her hand up causing the person to hit the ceiling before slamming into the ground with a thud.
The person groaned in pain. "Lin, what the hell was that for?"
Linette brightened her witchlight to find Will sitting up while cradling a probably broken wrist. "Well, Will, ever heard the saying: 'Never sneak up on a emotionally unstable people with power?"
He just smiled, "Nope never heard it. I shall keep it in mind though. Now, feel like fixing me?"
She smiled and knelt down to draw an iratze. As she was concentrating on the rune, Will reached up with his good hand and touched her cheek. "Lin—"
"There all fixed, what did you want?"
She said as she quickly stoop up, still flustered from the touch. What was it about this boy that made her loose control, and that she wanted to loose control. The thought sent a shiver down her spine and goose bumps up her arms.
"Uh, my mother wanted to take you girls dress shopping for Christmas gowns tomorrow?"
Linette wanted to go dress shopping with the others but her scars said otherwise. "I, uh, I don't know."
She looked at the floor ashamed from what happened to her. Will walked towards her, but his arms around her. "Why not? I bet you would look beautiful in any dress you wanted. You could always zap one here of you wanted."
She smiled at the idea, and stepped away from the other shadowhunter. Linette closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and imagined the dress she wanted. She was about to snap her fingers when she paused, "Wait, you don't get to see it until Christmas."
"But—"
"Ah, ah, ah, no buts William Carstairs. I want it to be a surprise."
Will gave a frustrated, yet playful, growl before giving her one last kiss and leaving the room. She felt as if her heart was being ripped out of her chest. If Will knew the true intentions of this act it would kill him.
She pushed that thought from her mind as she snapped the dress into the room, and went to bed, exhausted from her day.
"Linette wake up!" Linette startled awake as Will touched her. Her eyes were wide with fear, and her breathing was heavy. Her hand was clasped tightly to the side of her neck, so Will got an idea what the dream was about. "Were you back in Shanghai?" Linette just nodded as tears started to stream down her face, "She was still alive too. Why won't they just stop? I just want it all to go away!" She broke down in uncontrollable sobs, and Will just held her as if she would slip away. He held her there for hours until she eventually fell asleep, exhausted as well, Will slipped into a peaceful sleep not long after.
