Chapter 45-Broken
Emma's POV
"Gold's was a dead end. That was Belle. No book in the shop", David tells us.
"Regina, you said the last place you saw it was Henry's room", Mary Margaret states.
"Yes, but it's not there. It was swept away by the last curse", Regina replies.
"A book can't just disappear", David says.
"But it can just appear. The first curse. It just showed up in my closet, when I needed it. Or more accurately, when Henry needed it", Mary Margaret responds.
"What do you mean?", I ask.
"He was going through a rough time. He was realizing he had been given up. He didn't feel like he had a real family".
"He did", Regina insists.
"That may be. But, Regina, he wasn't feeling that way with you or with anyone. He needed to believe in happy endings again. That's what the book gave him".
"Well, he needs to believe again. In fact, I think we all do. What do you think we go check your closet?"
Morgan's POV
"Hey. I got to run. I got to check on a lead. You're okay to stay here longer? I'll call you later", Emma says to me and Henry before leaving Granny's. We watch her leave and due to this twin telepathy thingy I have with Henry we get up at the same time and follow Emma outside where the Storybrooke Breakfast Club was gathered.
"Where are you really going?", Henry demands. So it's taken him this long to finally ask this question. Wow, Henry really needs to get a backbone.
"I told you. I'm following a lead", Emma responds.
"What lead?"
"It's my job. It's complicated".
"Tell me".
"It would just be easier once it's all solved, Henry".
"You've been lying to me ever since we got here. I deserve to know everything".
"No, you don't! I'm your mother and I know best. So, you just gonna have to deal with this for now, okay? Understood?"
"Someone sounds like she just fell from the sky", I mumble.
"Yeah, I think I do. Wait. I need your keys. I left mine in the room and if I'm gonna be a prisoner I'd like to have my Game Boy", Henry says.
Hook's POV
"Where are you off to there, mates?", I ask the lass and the lad as the lad is fumbling to open Emma's car.
"Uh, nowhere", Henry replies.
"You're quite in the rush to go nowhere".
"And you're quite in the rush to get in our business", Morgan counters.
"Fine. We're going home", Henry says.
"Mm. You're running away", I state.
"Whatever".
"It's none of your business anyway", Morgan adds.
"So, you're planning on driving all the way back to New York? One lesson and you think you're ready for that?", I ask Henry
"No, just to the nearest bus station", Henry responds.
"I'm afraid I can't let you do that. It's too dangerous".
"I don't care what you think".
"Well, you should. Cause I've got a better way".
"And why should we listen to you. You're a pir—person we barely know", Morgan responds. It was then that I knew; she had her memories as she almost called me a pirate. But the real question I had concerning the lass was why she was pretending to still have her cursed memories and how the bloody hell did she get her memories back.
"Cause I can guarantee that you won't crash".
Emma's POV
"Why do women keep their shoe boxes?", David asks from the inside of Mary Margaret's closet.
"Because after true love there is no more powerful magic than footwear. It has to be protected, Mary Margaret replies.
"Any sign of the book?", I ask.
"No. I don't think it's here", David responds.
"You don't know that", Mary Margaret says.
"Maybe it's in this thing. Some winter coats. Some scarves. The book is not in here", I say, rifling through a trunk of her stuff.
"Hang on. Let me check". After a while of searching Mary Margaret is able to find the storybook.
"I don't understand".
"Did you really not see it in there?"
"You think I'm lying?"
"No, of course not. It's just- Emma, what's going on? You've been anxious since we left Granny's".
"Nothing".
"No, it's not nothing. You yelled at Henry. That's not like you".
"None of this is like me. At least, it never used to be".
"What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about wicked witches and time traveling holy wars. I've forgotten what it was like here. I don't want that for Henry and Morgan".
"So, you're taking him back to New York after this is all over, aren't you? Your father said you're thinking about it".
"Yeah, I am".
"And that's why you looked relieved when we couldn't find the book. You don't want his memories back".
"If getting his memories back is the only way to break the curse, then that's what we're gonna do. But I don't want it to be any harder on him or Morgan than it has to be. Our life in New York was really good.
"Sure it was, but it wasn't home".
"It was for us".
"That's because you forgot about us. Now let's get Henry".
Morgan's POV
"Lass, I'd like a word with you", Hook says.
"Sure, whatever", I respond and quicken my pace to catch up to where Hook was, leaving Henry in the rear. "What do you want?"
"I know you're faking lass". How the hell did Hook figure it out?! He's a drunken pirate; how is it possible for him to have an ounce of intelligence?
"I have no idea what you're talking about".
"Don't lie to me, I know the truth. You have your memories. You remember everything yet you're pretending that you don't".
"So you figured it out. I gotta give it to you, you're smarter than a thought", I respond, dropping the act.
"But why fake it? Why pretend like you don't have your memories?"
"Let's just say it's a lot easier and I get a hell lot more time to myself".
"To sneak out? You've been seeing Pan, haven't you?"
"How the hell did you get that idea?!"
"It's exactly what you've been doing. So why are you going to New York?"
"So what if I have?", I counter, ignoring his question.
"If you don't tell me what I want to know—"
"Are you threatening me?! Listen here, pirate, if you expose what I've really been up to, I will you will suffer every minute of every day, understand?"
"And what makes you think you can do that all the way from New York?"
"I have my ways. Now, be sure to make the right decision if you know what's good for you".
Emma's POV
They're gone", I say after coming down from the room me, Henry, and Morgan were staying in.
"What do you mean, gone?", Regina asks.
"I mean they're not in the room. They're not in the parlor and my keys are gone; my car keys".
"Give me something of theirs. I'll try a locator spell".
"I'm way ahead of you. I've got GPS on their phones. They're at the docks".
Morgan's POV
"Henry, Morgan, this is a friend of mine. Mr. Smee", Hook tells me and Henry.
"Like from Peter Pan?", Henry responds. I instantly think of Pan upon hearing his name.
"You remember?" Well it's a good thing Smee never watched us for Emma's sake, otherwise she would be screwed in trying to make sense of the crazy, but true things Smee would be telling us.
"I've seen the movie a million times". Yup, the movie where Pan is depicted as a 10 year-old tight wearing ginger and Hook is a 40 year-old coward with a perm who is constantly watched by a ticking crocodile. Not exactly the same as the reality in which Pan is an immortal teenage boy who kidnaps boys, with the exception of me, in an effort to stay young forever and Hook is a one-handed pirate with a drinking problem who came to Neverland to find a way to get revenge on my grandfather, Rumplestiltskin. Man, was Disney far from the actual truth. And I gotta say the murderous mermaids, revenge driven Indians, blood-thirsty lost boys, and monstrous Peter Pan are far more exciting and oddly enough I grew to love this island ridden with eternal darkness.
"It's quite a common name in the seafaring world. As luck would have it he's making sail to New York and would be happy for the company", Hook responds.
"I am? I mean, I am", Smee responds after a brief glance at Hook.
"Really? Where is your ship?", Henry asks with utter disbelief in his voice.
Um, there she is", Smee says, pointing to a nearby boat that we were likely gonna steal.
"We're stealing it, aren't we?, I ask, though I'm pretty sure I already knew the answer.
"You wanna go to New York or not?", Hook asks us.
"Why are you helping us?", Henry responds. But before Hook could respond the sound of something coming towards us from the sky; like a bird, but much larger and it certainly wasn't Pan as it was apparent whatever it was had wings and I know for a fact that Pan doesn't have wings.
"Captain?", Smee says to Hook, an uneasy tone in his voice.
"Mr. Smee, we need to get them to the boat house", Hook tells his chubby friend.
"Why? What's going on?", Henry asks. And this was one of the few times in which I had the same thought. But whatever it was I'm sure it had something to do with the reason that Storybrooke was on lockdown. Henry and I instantaneously looked up to find the answer to our question. Up in the cloudy sky a flying winged beast circles above us. Oh, you have gotta be kidding me; Pan seriously didn't think it was worth mentioning about winged beasts that look about as salvage as the lost boys. The monkey then begins to descend and prepares to attack. Well, isn't today just perfect?
"Killian, what is that?", Henry asks. I honestly cannot think of a single snarky thing to say for I don't know what the hell that thing even is.
"Now!", Hook commands. And even though it is completely against my nature, I listen to Hook and run into the boat house along with Henry, Hook, and Smee.
"What now, Captain?", Smee asks as he locks the door behind us.
"Take Morgan and Henry there. Far exit. Find a new boat. I'll stay here to deal with our winged friends. Morgan, Henry, go with Smee. Don't stop, no matter what you hear", Hook tells us, well more like orders us.
Smee frenetically follows Hook orders and exits. Henry and I however briefly stop as we watch the flying beast, which turned out to be a monkey descends.
"Henry, Morgan, go!", Hook commands.
This time we actually listen and take off in synch; though neither me nor Henry can resist looking back at what was happening. Hook fires his pistol twice, killing two flying monkeys. Due to not really looking where we're going, Henry and I trip over a coiled rope a few feet from each other. Two more monkeys descend and prepare to attack us. Me and Henry find ourselves unable to move as the distance becomes closer and closer.
"No!", Hook screams but as there is no sound from the trigger being pulled, I know that it is out of ammunition. Fired from behind another bullet hits the monkey preparing to attack Henry directly in the chest. But there was still the one looming above my head. I could feel my heart beating rapidly against my chest but not in the good way when you feel the rush of adrenaline; no, this was what fear felt like. And I knew another gun was not gonna go off without the risk of killing me in the process so needless to say, I was fucked.
Everything seemed to move in slow motion as I waited for the flying monkey to attack. But there was something strange about it, like it wasn't a hallucination but time had actually slowed down. I swear I could see the air created by the monkey's wings and the strands of my hair being blown by the slight breeze. I want to force myself to stand up, to do something but truth be told; I don't know what to do, even if I manage to stand up, how do you fight something that has the power of the sky? But then time seemed to speed up when a figure in a forest green hoodie barged into the boat house.
"HEY! CIRCUS FREAK!", he shouted. "Leave. Her. Alone". He then shoots fire balls at the monkey which causes it to charge toward him. He doesn't even flinch; he just stands there until the flying beast is about a foot away from him and shoots another fireball which instantly destroys it. The hooded figure then jogs over to me.
Running Emma, David and Regina enter the boat house. David throws his sword at another winged monkey beast. They look over at the figure whose face I have yet to see, trying to figure out whether they should continue killing these beasts or rushing over to Henry and I.
"She's fine. Take care of the others", the hooded figure told them. Wait a minute…I know that voice. The figure then helps me up and I see his face…Pan; I should've known. Leave it to him to be spying on me, although in this case, I'm kinda glad he did. Not that I was scared or anything.
"Pan?", I ask quietly.
"Would it be anyone else", he responds.
"You saved me".
"Did you ever doubt I would?"
"Truthfully?"
At this point I don't see any more monkeys but I do see my family coming towards Pan, Henry, and I. Pan and I instantly take a step back from each other so no assumptions are made and with Pan being in the open and all, the last thing we need is him to draw attention to himself.
"Thanks", Emma says to Pan.
"Uh…no problem", Pan replies, dropping his voice an octave and refusing to look her in the eyes for he knew what was at stake.
"Henry, are you okay?"
"Y… Yeah. What were those things?", Henry responds. "Why does he have a sword?", he then asks when he sees David sheath his sword.
"It's all gonna make sense in a minute, I promise".
"What are you talking about?" I then noticed Pan heading out the boat house during this whole exchange. As everyone was so focused on Henry, for whatever the reason may be, I took this opportunity to follow Pan.
"Hey!", I yell once we were outside, getting his attention. It wasn't that hard saying we were the only two out on the docks.
"What are you doing here?", Pan asks me, turning around.
"I wanted to say thanks for, you know, saving me".
"Speaking of, are you okay? Those monkeys weren't exactly friendly".
"Yeah…I'm fine…"
"It's okay if you were scared. You don't have to pretend when you're scared, at least not with me, being scared doesn't make you weak, it just means you're on the verge of becoming stronger".
"I wasn't scared…", I lied. Truth to be told, I was more than scared, I just didn't wanted to admit it cause if I say it, it becomes real and I don't want it to become real; not now, not ever.
"Don't lie to me. I don't care if you lie to everyone else, but don't lie to me".
"I'm not; I wasn't scared. I was shocked cause somebody never mentioned anything to me about flying demonic monkeys. But luckily you were there when I needed some assistance".
"Zelena's going to regret going after you".
"Wait, what?"
"The Wicked Witch of the West. The person who sent the monkeys after you".
"But why would she attack me? What's her gain?"
"It's not you as much as me and her. The two of us have a past together and let's just say she wasn't all that happy about how we ended things".
"I just love how your mistakes bite me in the behind".
"Love, don't worry about it. If she comes after you again, I'll protect you. You know cause she has magic and kicking her in the gut isn't as helpful as using magic to defeat her".
"You would really do that for me?"
"Why do you sound so surprised?"
"I'm not really used to others looking out for me".
"I'd do anything for you. You know that, right? I know I didn't always show it, but I do".
"Yeah. It just took some time".
Third Person's POV
Emma hands Henry the book. As soon as he takes it Henry remembers visiting Emma in Boston, both of them sitting together at his castle, Emma breaking the curse, using pixie dust to fly in Neverland with Morgan, practice sword fighting with his father, leaving Storybrooke.
"I remember! I remember!", Henry shouts after finally having his memories returned.
"Do it, Emma. Break the curse", Regina tells Emma. Emma leans forward to kiss Henry but he disappears before her lips make contact.
"So sorry to interrupt. Now, who wants to say good-bye first?", Zelena asks, holding Henry in a headlock.
"Who are you?", Henry asks her, still struggling.
"You can call me Auntie Zelena".
"Enough of this", Regina says. Regina takes a step towards her Zelena. Raising a hand Zelena magically pushes her sister backwards, knocking her out.
"Let him go. He had nothing to do with this", Emma says.
"Don't blame me. The captain failed me", Zelena responds.
"Hook, what's she talking about?"
"He knew what the price of that failure was: Your son's life".
"Mom", Henry says with a choked voice. Emma focuses her magic on Zelena; freeing Henry.
"Run!", Emma commands. Henry does just that and hugs Emma once he's back with Emma.
"Enjoy this moment together because you don't have many left!", Zelena yells angrily before she disappears in a cloud of green smoke.
"Henry, are you okay?"
"Yeah", Henry replies. Henry kneels down beside Regina. Gently shaking her he tries to awake Regina.
Morgan's POV
"Well I gotta go before the un-Charmings try to figure out who saved you", Pan says, beginning to walk the other way.
"Pan, wait!", I respond, he immediately stops and turns around to face me as if he was expecting me to stop him before he got too far.
"What?"
"I didn't get the chance to properly thank you".
"You just did—", but I cut him off when I smashed my lips onto his. But what happened next, I'm not quite sure how to explain; it's like not even all the words in any dictionary could explain it. The moment mine and Pan's lips touched there was this rainbow of color that broke out and burst in all directions. There was something about this color explosion that changed something, I could feel it; the magic was strong and when Pan and I pulled apart, he looked at me with new light.
"We broke it", Pan stated.
"Broke what?" I ask him.
"The Dark Curse. The very curse that stole everyone's memories from the past year".
"Well I think this is my cue. I better go back before everyone realizes I'm gone. I'll see you later".
"You know things won't be the same".
"I'll take the challenge".
Regina's POV
"Henry. Oh, Henry. I will never let you go away again. I promise. I love you, Henry. I kiss Henry lightly on the forehead. The Dark Curse breaks, but it didn't feel right; it felt like I wasn't the cause of the curse being broken; someone else was.
"It wasn't me. It was you", Emma says.
"No it wasn't", I respond before she can say another word.
"But I saw the light pulse out, the curse was broken".
"It was, but it wasn't me, it only looked like it".
"Then who broke it?"
Emma's POV
"Are you gonna tell me what Zelena was talking about? She said you failed her", I ask Hook.
"Don't listen to her", I respond.
"Killian, what's going on? Were you working for her?"
"The witch tried to back me into a corner. I did everything I could to resist her plans".
"So, whose idea was it to kidnap Henry and Morgan and stick them on a boat?"
"It was mine. I was trying to save them".
"From what? What is she doing?"
"She cursed me. My lips, actually".
"Your lips? Why?"
"She wants to steal your magic. She thought I was the best way of doing that. She knows what we all know: That you can defeat her".
"It should have been my decision to protect Henry and Morgan. Whether she forced your hand or not, it doesn't matter. I can't trust you now. How can I?"
"Cause I know something that not even Zelena knows".
"And what's that?"
"Morgan. She has her memories. She's been faking for a while now".
Third Person's POV
"Yeah. Was it hard? Coming back to Storybrooke, when you knew it'd be dangerous? I mean, life in New York was pretty good", Henry asks Emma while Morgan is texting furiously on her phone.
"It was better than good. But I had this voice stuck in my head that I couldn't shake", Emma replies.
"Whose?"
"Yours. I knew how you would have voted on this".
"Yeah. And you know what this means? Operation Cobra is back on".
"I'm not sure it ever ended". Mary Margaret gasps in pain
"Mary Margaret", Emma says, running up to her parents.
"Hey. Hey. Deep breaths. Take deep breaths. I'll get the truck", David tells Mary Margaret.
"Mary Margaret, you're okay?"
"It's the baby. It's coming", Mary Margaret replies.
