Chapter Forty-Four

Appearing deceptively calm, he leaned back against the wall in the waiting room with his eyes trained on the closed door where Patrick was in with Georgie. He'd arrived at the ER almost an hour ago and still hadn't been updated on what was going on. If it hadn't been for Elizabeth reassuring him Georgie had regained consciousness within minutes of passing out, Johnny would have strangled someone by now. Then add in the fact Georgie had banned anyone from the exam room caused him to still consider the option of hurting someone. He wanted answers now! More importantly, he needed to see Georgie was okay with his own eyes.

His attention drifted to the elevator when the doors slid open. Shoving away from the wall before stepping in front of the person he seriously was considering murdering, Johnny narrowed his eyes and his face clearly betrayed the rage he was fighting to control. The only thing saving her at the moment was all the witnesses standing around. Otherwise he'd have killed her without a second's hesitation. "Are you really this fucking stupid? Do you have a brain in that worthless ass head of yours? Leave! Now!"

Maxie backed up into Dillon at the undisguised fury clearly visible in Johnny's eyes. Wringing her hands, she choked back a sob. "I never meant…"

"Never meant what, Maxie? To tell your sister you wish she had died instead of coming home?" Shrugging off Jason's restraining hand, he clenched his fists to keep from wrapping his fingers around her throat. "I'm not your sister and I don't give a damn what you're going through. You made your feeling painfully clear today. Stay the hell away from her and Baylor!"

Several of the other guys climbed to their feet as Maxie defiantly stood her ground. It was easy to see Johnny wasn't too far from snapping. None wanted to explain to Georgie why he'd been arrested.

"She's my sister!" Maxie protested frantically, her voice breaking as she clung to Dillon for support. "I love Georgie, Johnny! I just lost it. I didn't mean it! I certainly never meant for her to collapse! That wasn't my fault!"

"You self-absorbed, delusional bitch! Do you have any idea…"

"Zacchara!" Patrick raised his voice to catch his attention but smartly chose to keep his distance. The man looked ready to explode, not that he could blame him. The hospital was abuzz with the recorded conversation Hayes had played for Zacchara when he arrived demanding information. "Georgie's asking for you."

Relief swept through him. Patrick didn't appear worried or upset and if something serious was wrong Johnny knew the man would not be so calm. Starting to turn, he paused and caught Maxie starting forward. "I'm only warning you one time. Stay the hell away from Georgie and Baylor. Pretend they are dead for all I care, because from now on they might as well be to you. Don't push me either, Maxie. I guarantee you won't like my response."

"Look, I know you're upset, Zacchara, but you need to calm down," Patrick warned as they stopped in front of the door to her room. "Georgie doesn't need the added drama of whatever the hell that was back there. Can you do that? She's pretty emotional already."

"Of course. What's wrong with her? Is she okay?"

Patrick nodded at the door. "All I can say is she's healthy. As for details, only Georgie can answer your questions."

Johnny slipped into the room after tapping lightly on the door. Seeing her standing at the window with her back to him, he silently crossed the room to stand behind her. Snaking his arms around her middle, he nuzzled her neck. "You scared me, Georgie. Patrick said you're okay?"

"Yeah."

The barely audible response had him tightening his hold. The way she continued to tremble in his embrace had worry surging back to the forefront. "What's going on, baby? What did Patrick say was wrong?"

Fighting the urge to shove him away, she swallowed hard before dropping her head. "I'm sorry you were worried. I tried to talk the guys out of calling you. They overreacted."

"What? Why?" Johnny smoothed a lock of her hair behind her ear, watching her eyes flutter. "If you're sick I want to be here for you, Georgie." When she remained silent he inwardly sighed. The playful and upbeat mood from their morning spent together long gone, she seemed depressed or upset. "I had Logan, Milo, and Wilson take Bay home. She's made them call a couple times so you need to call her in a couple minutes."

Her lips curved at the mentioned of Baylor. She hated her baby had been upset by all the drama earlier. "I'll call right now."

Johnny refused to let go. "Hmm. A couple more minutes won't hurt anything. Before you call the baby girl, Georgie, I'd like for you to tell me what's wrong."

"Can you please let go?" she asked, squirming uncomfortably.

Slowly dropping his arms from around her, he stepped back but kept all his attention on her. "Georgie, you aren't alone anymore. You need to remember that." Smoothing the single teardrop from her eyelash, Johnny lifted her face so she was looking at him. "Please tell me you are okay."

"I'm perfectly healthy, Johnny," she confirmed shakily.

"No you aren't," he automatically denied. "You've been worn out, sick, and passed out twice now. That's not healthy, Georgie."

Georgie placed her hand over his, stopping him as he started to get worked up. "It is normal right now. I'm pregnant, Johnny," she whispered tearfully.

Stunned, he froze, only able to blink as his heart hammered in his chest. Nothing could have prepared him to hear those words. Joy pushed past the shock. A baby! Not only had he been blessed by gaining Baylor, but now she would have a baby brother or sister.

Turning back to the face the window at his lack of reaction, Georgie fought to keep from breaking down. She hadn't expected Patrick to deliver that diagnosis. Looking back she could see all the early symptoms were there, but she'd overlooked them, chalking everything up to all the upheaval in her life. Having another child hadn't even entered her mind.

Snapping out of his inner thoughts, Johnny winced at how she might have perceived his silence. "Georgie, hey baby, come here." He guided her by the hips so that she faced him again. The blankness in her normally expressive eyes made him see past his own emotions. Georgie didn't look excited at all. "Can you tell me why you aren't happy, baby? I know this wasn't planned. Hell, we never talked about more kids, but I'm so happy!" His large hand protectively splayed across her abdomen. "We created a miracle, Georgie. Please tell me you are okay with this. Tell me you want this baby, our baby."

"I do want the baby. I just," she broke off, stopping and biting her lip. He wouldn't understand.

"Just what?" he prodded. In all the times he'd seen her emotional, Johnny had never seen her so closed off. He couldn't even gage her mind set right now.

"I want to go home," she blurted out. Watching him stiffen and the happiness on his face change to concern, she bowed her head. Georgie didn't want to hurt him, but she couldn't do this here. "Please, Johnny. I can't stand to be here and I really need to hold my daughter."

Johnny ignored the way she refused to meet his eyes and pulled her to him, enfolding her in a warm hug. "I love you, Georgie. Whatever is floating through your mind right now, you need to accept I'm not going to let you push me away, especially after all we've went through to reach where we were this morning. This baby, Baylor, and you are the answer to my dreams." His lips skimmed over hers in a feathery soft touch before he wrapped an arm around her back, keeping her close. Some of his fear dissipated when she remained close and didn't move away. "Let's go show Bay her mommy's not hurt."

OoOoOoOoOoOo

Jason stood with his arms crossed and watched in amazement as Lulu stopped at the porch steps. The fact she waltz onto their property like she didn't have a care in the world made him realize how good she had become at hiding her true agenda. Sam's cell phone had provided a wealth of information once their new tech guy hacked into the device. And little Miss Leslie Lou Spencer was up to her neck in plotting with Sam, Carly, and her family. Too bad he couldn't confront her just yet. They needed a bit more information before letting their knowledge be known.

Face unreadable, he stared at her without speaking.

"Hi, Jason." Lulu willed tears to her eyes and slightly pouted, putting on her sad face. "I just heard about Spinelli. I know how close you were with him, almost like brothers. It must be horrible to know you didn't protect him enough. But I know Spinelli wouldn't want you to blame yourself. He admired you so much! Can you tell me the funeral arrangements? I tried Sam but she's not answering her phone."

Mentally applauding her act, he nodded tersely. The fact she was trying to make him feel like he hadn't protected the little cretin enough was laughable since it was true. He hadn't done a thing to stop Zacchara from killing him, instead he'd sent O'Brien to help. "With no family still alive, I arranged for cremation. His ashes will be delivered to the church in three days and Father Mateo will officiate the service."

Sniffling, she cradled her broken wrist. Damn Georgie! Her wrist still hurt. "Have you told Sam? Spinelli would want her there. They were such close friends as well as business partners in the PI firm."

Yep, definitely a Spencer. Not even subtle at attempting to manipulate people. "No. Sam is no longer my concern. She'll either hear of it the same way you did or she won't. I don't care either way. "

Swallowing a scathing retort, Lulu gave him her puppy dog eyes combined with her hurt little girl pout. "Carly's asking about you, Jason. She needs you to help her. You know she'd never hurt Sonny."

"How does Dante feel about you supporting the woman accused of killing his father?"

Anger jumped into her voice. "He'll see that Carly's being framed once the truth comes out."

"Lulu, the evidence is air tight. Carly's changed over the years. I know you love her, but you need to accept her true nature before you lose Dante. If he really matters to you," he added with a lift of a brow.

Damn, the man was infuriating! Nothing ever got a spark of emotion from him. She smirked as an idea occurred. "I talked to Lucky last night. He wanted me to apologize to Elizabeth for all the stupid stunts he's pulled lately. He's in a rehab center right now. He checked himself in, hoping Liz would let him see Cam after he gets clean. He misses his son. Can I talk to Liz so I can relay his message?"

Reminding himself that the little bitch would pay for her part in all that they were learning, Jason unclenched his jaw. Then he bit his cheek to keep from laughing. He hadn't realized Hell offered pay phones and drug counseling programs. "Sorry. Elizabeth's taking a nap. You'll have to catch her another time. Take care." Dismissing her without a backward glance, Jason forced himself not to slam the door when he closed it.

"Does she think we're stupid?"

"She's a Spencer. Thinking is complicated for them," O'Brien pointed out.

"It's just hard to see what she's grown into. Lulu was such a sweet little girl at one time."

"Elizabeth, even Charles Manson was a cute little kid at one point. Stop feeling compassion for people who only want to hurt you." Sarah stretched before resting her head on the back of the chair. "What time is your shift tomorrow?"

"I'm only cleared for eight hours. Epiphany is scheduling me from 7-3 so I can do mostly surgery cases." Elizabeth grinned cheekily at Jason. "It also makes it much easier for the guys since I won't be in and out of multiple patient rooms." Pausing and thinking about what she'd just said, she looked back over at her sister. "How in the world are you going to see patients with a guard hanging over your shoulder?"

"Easy. Whoever gets stuck with me will spend their day in the waiting room. When I do rounds or deliveries, they're going to have stay down the hall."

Johnny looked unhappily at his wife but knew he wouldn't win an argument if it surrounded her job. The difficulty in guarding her at the hospital was why he hired only ex Special Forces to shadow Sarah. They tended to be closer than she allotted and she never knew they broke the rules. When Elizabeth yawned he rubbed Sarah's thigh. "Come on, Sar. I think Lizbits needs a nap."

Elizabeth snuggled into Jason's side once they were alone. Listening to his breathing soothed her nerves. The day had been hectic and draining after what went down at lunch. "What time did Francis say the boys and he would be back?"

Jason rolled his eyes. Francis and the boys had plotted to go watch a baseball game this afternoon. Since his friend meticulously set security in place and already purchased the tickets, neither he nor Elizabeth could deny the day out. But he missed spending time with Cam and Jake. Lately they'd been with his grandfather, Monica, or their friends a lot. With Elizabeth working a short shift tomorrow he intended to spend some time with the boys. "The game won't end until at least seven-thirty. So they'll make it back around eight or so."

"They're growing up so quick."

"It feels like that sometimes, but then there are times it seems like it was just yesterday I felt Cam's first kick, or when you admitted that I could be Jake's father when you were pregnant with him. It's such an indescribable feeling to experience. Now I'm getting to relive it all over again." His voice dropped slightly. "I recognized the same wonder in Zacchara's face today, Elizabeth. I'd bet money Georgie's pregnant."

"I suspected the same thing." She shifted so her head rested in his lap and stretched out on the other two cushions of the couch. "Jason, I can't help but worry that if we're right and she is, Diego's going to freak when he learns of it. Logan's convinced he was testing how close he could get to her and Bay today."

"I'll talk with John tomorrow but right now I can't help but think we're missing something important."

"What do you mean?"

"Helena. Georgie let her name slip a couple different times that night Frisco showed up and she was yelling at him."

Elizabeth shivered. They didn't get much more diabolic than the Ice Queen. After her own numerous run-ins with the witch, she wished the woman would just disappear to her island in Greece. "It's still hard to accept Nik's working with her. He always swore he wanted to be better than Helena and Stavros. After Em died he just gave in to the darker side of his personality, I guess. It's sad. He tried for so long to be different, to escape the family curse."

Lightly trailing his fingertips up and down her side, Jason grinned when she shivered before changing the subject. Helena and Nik were not a topic he wanted to spend too much time on with her. He'd never liked or trusted the Prince, only tolerating him because his sister had been convinced she loved him. "Did you decide on what house you like best?"

A sleepy smile curved her plush lips. "Uh huh. The stone farmhouse right outside town heading toward Nowhere. The last owners remodeled so we won't have to change a thing and it's a six bedroom. It's so serene there too. Did you like it?"

He had. Just like her, the old fashioned home had been his favorite as well. Jason also like the fact security wouldn't draw any unwanted attention from others since the closest neighbor would be Johnny and Sarah. Giving her a sly grin, Jason admitted, "My offer was accepted today. Diane's working on all the paperwork."

Elizabeth reached up and smacked his chest. "What if I had chosen another house?" she demanded in mock anger.

Rearranging her body so he could lay behind her on the couch, Jason tickled her side before cuddling close. "Because I know you, Elizabeth. You fell in love with that house the minute you laid eyes on it." His mouth brushed her ear as he inhaled her sweet scent. "It was the least fussy with the best lighting. As long as nothing unexpected crops up, we'll have the keys in two days. I wanted to be able to start the beginning of our lives as the Morgan's in a home with no memories of the past."

"And people say you have no charm," she teased before kissing the hand cradling her head. Tiredly blinking, she allowed his surrounding warmth to lull her into a peaceful silence.

Checking and finding her eyelids closed a few minutes later, Jason admired her beauty. Sliding one hand into his jeans pocket he removed his phone and set the alarm for in a couple hours. Napping with his amazing girl sounded like a perfect way to pass the rest of the afternoon.

OoOoOoOoOoOo

"Johnny?"

Sitting his bottle of beer on the porch railing, he turned toward her and held out a hand. When she immediately placed her smaller one in his, Johnny let out a soft sigh. "Baylor asleep?"

Stepping closer, Georgie leaned into him and wound her arms around his waist. "It took a while, but she finally fell asleep."

"You ready to tell me what's wrong, baby?"

"I'm sorry," she breathed before clearing her throat. "I know I was a bitch to you earlier and you didn't deserve that, Johnny."

"I don't care about that, Georgie." He ran his fingers through her hair.

"You should. God, Johnny! I shouldn't have closed down on you like that and made you think I don't want this baby. I just never expected to hear Patrick say I was pregnant when he walked in the room with the test results."

Gently tugging her head back so she was looking up at him, he studied her eyes before the tension drained from his body. "I thought you weren't happy."

"I am. But it took a while to really sink in. Everything's just happening so fast. Since I came home nothing's made any sense. If anything, I've only complicated everybody's life, but mostly yours."

"You are so freaking bullheaded at times. You and Baylor are not complications. You still don't get it." Guiding her over to the swing, he urged her to sit before joining her, twisting so he could still watch her face as they talked. "If it had been anyone else in your situation, I might have offered protection in the form of guards, but I would have never suggested getting married. Georgie, I didn't volunteer out of the kindness of my heart. I did it because I knew you were it for me. Seeing you get off the elevator at GH the nigh Bay was sick, I wanted you then with an intensity I've never felt." He cupped her chin and tilted her head back up when she attempted to look away from the raw honesty in his expression. "But the night we learned about Bay's biological father, I knew then I'd do anything to protect you because I was already starting to fall for you. There's nothing I would change about us even I could." Dropping his hands to her abdomen, he lightly caressed the flat area. "I never dreamed you were pregnant since I've seen you take a birth control pill every morning before breakfast, but I definitely don't regret it happened. Hell, I love this baby already. But I need to know you really are happy and you both are gonna be healthy."

Unshed tears glistened in her eyes at his emotional confession. All her doubts melted away, leaving her feeling incredibly secure and loved for the first time ever. "I love you so much, Johnny. I always knew I'd never trade my past for an easier last three years because then I wouldn't have Bay. But I also wouldn't have you either. I don't think I could survive losing you now that I've finally let myself admit I need you." Linking her hand with his, Georgie squeezed his fingers. "I am happy about this baby. I was just thrown at first because it never crossed my mind because I was on the pill. But I also was afraid you'd not want the baby."

"I very much want our child, Georgie," he fervently whispered.

Tears dripped from her suddenly panicked eyes. "You got to promise that you won't leave me, Johnny."

Gathering her trembling form into his arms and pulling her onto his lap, Johnny silently berated himself for not catching the haunting similarities Georgie would certainly have felt. "Never. You're gonna be so sick of me that you'll be begging me to go away. And even then I'm not leaving, I'll just remind you how you ended up pregnant so you'll forget you wanted me to leave."

Giggling at the way he wiggled his eyebrows suggestively, she shook her head. "You're insane."

"I've been called worse." Cradling her and enjoying the feeling of her soft body relaxed in his arms, he kissed her neck. "And you'll be able to carry this baby with no problems, right?"
