*Okay…it was my intention to end this story after the wedding, but I have received a lot of messages asking me to continue…so, this is the question I pose. What would you rather have me do…leave the story incomplete and add to it as I can or make it complete and start another one with a series of one shots to continue? Message me and let me know and I will try to go with the majority but as I get closer to finishing this, there are other things I want to work on and finish as well so I won't be able to put as much time into it but I don't want to write "The End" on this either. Have a great weekend and thanks for reading.
The Waiting Game
"I can't believe I only have five days to plan a wedding!" Angela huffed as she followed Jane around the children's department of a large furniture store. "Not to mention, decorate my granddaughters room…" she threw her hands up in the air in exasperation. "You're asking for the impossible!"
"Come on Ma, enough of the theatrics." Jane stopped to look at a cherry wood bed that converted from a toddler bed to a full sized one when the time came for an upgrade. "What do ya think of this one?" She asked as she walked around it to get a better look. Maura had left her in charge of finding the right bed and she wasn't going to screw it up by picking something that might look cool but wasn't functionable.
Angela stopped to look at the bed, tilting her head to the side as she thought about it. "I like it. Especially the part where it converts into a full-sized bed later on down the road. Of course, you didn't sleep in your own bed until you were four…" her voice trailed off as she ran her finger over the smooth cherry wood. She smirked when she saw Jane glance longingly at the tree house bedroom set and shook her head. "First rule…functionality."
"I know, Ma!" Jane waved a hand around impatiently. "And Valley already sleeps in her own bed. I don't think we'll have any problems." She tried to reason, but she couldn't help glancing at the tree house bed again.
"Yeah, we'll see what happens when that little face is looking at you with those big eyes, begging you to let her climb up in bed between you and Maura. I have a feeling you'll have a hard time resisting." Angela rolled her eyes dramatically. "And need I remind you what Maura said?"
"No…you don't need to remind me. I know. But come on…" Jane took several long strides over towards the tree house and ran a hand over it with a wistful expression on her face. "This would be so much fun to have."
"Just build one in the backyard." Angela said. She could see the gleam of excitement in Jane's eyes and knew she had to distract her before they left with something that would get them both in trouble with Maura.
"Ya know…" Jane's face lite up. "That's not a bad idea. I could get Geo to help. He's got some skills as a carpenter."
"Okay, so the cherry wood set?" Trying to direct her daughter away from the temptation of fun over functionality, Angela guided Jane back to the original set.
"Yeah, okay. It's not too dark…is it?" Jane squinted and looked at the bed.
"No, I think it's a good choice. Maura will like the simple lines and…" she paused and waited for Jane to join her in finishing.
"It's functional…" they both said together with a laugh.
"Ah, you must be talking about my daughter." Constance sidled over to where Jane and Angela stood. "And you are absolutely right, she will like this one. Although I like that one there." She pointed at the tree house causing Jane to give Angela a 'see I told you' look.
"She would kill me if I brought that home." Jane shoved her hand in the pocket of her jeans and shrugged her shoulders in a defeated way. "We just got back on solid ground…I don't want to shake things up yet."
Constance was quiet a minute as she glanced from the cherry wood set to the tree house and then back again. She grinned and nodded her head at Jane. "I don't blame you. Better to be safe than sorry. But…" her voice dropped to a coconspirator level. "She didn't say what kind of sheets and accessory's you had to buy."
A smirk spread across Jane's face as realization dawned on her. "You're right. I get to pick whatever I want…"
"Please don't go overboard with the Red Sox stuff, Janie." Angela's voice held a plea as she gave Constance an annoyed look.
Jane frowned as she thought about what Valley liked and tried to come up with something that would be deemed fun, cool, and different. "She's smart, ya know. Love's animals, dinosaurs, sports…I don't know…"
"Look, why don't you and Constance go look at the sheets while I get this taken care of." Angela attempted to shoo them away.
"What's the hurry, Ma?" Jane raised a suspicious eyebrow at her mother.
"She doesn't want to be involved in picking the sheets, so she can tell Maura that whatever we get isn't her fault." Constance laughed causing her dark blue eyes to light up with mirth.
"Is that true?" Jane had a wounded look on her face as she gazed at Angela with her big, dark puppy dog eyes.
"No…" Angela tried to deny. "Okay…maybe." She laughed then kissed Jane on the cheek. "Go pick out the sheets."
"Come on Jane…we've got this." Constance slipped her arm past Jane's bent elbow and winked at Angela.
"Get something fun…but, um…safe…" Angela tried to advise as she took one last look at the bedroom set, nodding in satisfaction knowing that at least this would get Maura's seal of approval.
"She's really scared of Maura…isn't she?" Jane marveled as Constance led her away.
"We all are." Constance shivered as she thought of her daughter's temper. It wasn't as if Maura was unreasonable but where some people had hot, flaming tempers full of fire, Maura's was cold and calculated and as sharp as an icicle. No one wanted to be on the receiving end of that icy temperament that could burn as cold as frostbite.
The feeling of Constance shivering next to her caused Jane to laugh. "You got that right." She agreed.
"So, with that in mind…let's play it safe, but have some fun as well." Constance pointed to the section of toddler sheets. "How are things going at the clinic?" She asked as they perused over the many designs and colors.
"Good. She's had to be there over the past few days, though. I guess she wants to make sure everything is on schedule, especially with Amy and her husband still in California." Jane said as she ran her fingers over one particular set with purple and pink stars.
"I thought Amy was here?" Constance tilted her head as she asked the question, noticing the frown on Jane's face.
"Yeah, but only for a few more days. I guess they're trying to cram as much as they can in a short time." Jane continued to frown as she contemplated the stars. "Why do they have to be pink?"
"What?" Constance asked, confusion written all over her face.
"The stars…why do they have to be pink? I like the design but not the color…"
"Well, they have the purple too…" Constance tried to add her two cents.
"I suppose." Jane let out a frustrated sigh. "I guess we can get her several different designs and she can decide which ones she likes best."
"That sounds like a good idea. Why don't we get Angela over here and we can each pick out a set of sheets?" Constance couldn't help but sound a little proud at her idea.
"That's a good idea." Jane gave Constance a sideways glance and contemplated something that Maura had told her a few days ago. "Um, I never got to thank you for sticking up for me…ya know…" she tried not to stammer but sharing her feelings, especially at times like these was difficult for her.
"How do you mean?" Constance looked at Jane with those dark, stormy blue eyes.
"When Maura left…she told me you didn't think she should go. I know why she did it, but it almost broke me." Jane let out a shaky breath as a shiver ran through her body.
"Well, she was wrong…" Constance said, then hesitated. "At least I think she was. Sometimes she doesn't give people enough credit or the chance to prove themselves. I felt like you deserved that much from her but…you know how stubborn she can be."
"I appreciate it. And I appreciate the times you came by to help while she was gone." Jane could feel her cheeks warm with the pink blush that was starting to creep up her neck to her face.
Constance could see the nervous energy radiating off Jane, so she reached out and placed her hand on Jane's. "We're family, Jane. And as much as I love Maura…I'll be the first one to call bullshit when I see it."
The explicative took Jane by surprise and her eyes widened in shock. "I don't think I've ever heard you swear before." She said, shaking her head and laughing.
"I've been known to use colorful metaphors when necessary." Constance laughed as well.
"What did I miss?" Angela asked breathlessly as she jogged over to a giggling Jane and Constance.
"Not much, Ma." Jane wiped at the tears collecting at the corners of her eyes. "Just Constance's potty mouth."
"Oh…" Angela looked between the two women with a confused expression. "So, what have you found?" She leaned over the table holding the sheets and examined the many different choices.
"I kinda like these but they have pink in them." Jane ran her finger over the stars but frowned again. "Ouch! What the hell, Ma?" She squealed as she tried to get away from her mother's pinching fingers.
"Jane Rizzoli…just because you don't like pink does not mean my granddaughter doesn't." Angela pinched Jane's side, taking advantage of the sling that made her daughter's reflexes slower. "I like the stars."
Jane looked to Constance for support but only got a smirk in return. "But I don't like pink…" she mumbled as she continued to look through the designs, hoping to find the perfect one.
"I suggested that we each chose a pattern and get all three. There should be at least one that she'll like." Constance glanced at Jane with an apologetic smile.
"Okay…then I pick the stars with the PINK!" Angela emphasized the last word with a pointed look at Jane.
"You sure? There is a lot to choose from." Jane moved around to get a better look at the other patterns.
"Well…" Angela craned her neck, so she could see the other sets better. "I might need to look around a bit before I decide."
"I thought you might." Jane couldn't stop herself from smirking at her mother. Stepping back so Angela could move around her and look at the different sets, she felt a sudden surge of affection. A week ago, she didn't know what the future held, but today, as she watched Angela and Constance go back and forth trying to decide what to buy Valley, she was certain that everything was going to be alright.
"So, this weekend…huh?" Amy glanced up from the clipboard in her hands to see what Maura's reaction was.
"Yep." The grin that spread across Maura's face was all the evidence Amy needed to be sure that it was the right choice. "No eloping, but this is better. An impromptu ceremony at Fenway park, exactly like Jane always dreamed about.
"But what about what you dreamed about?" Amy couldn't stop herself from asking the question.
A thoughtful expression crossed over Maura's face and she was quiet for a minute. "Jane…" she said with a sigh. "Jane is what I've dreamt about. The day she took that football helmet off when we were in high school, I knew I would marry her and we would spend the rest of our lives together. All I want is to gaze into those chocolate, brown eyes and make the vow to love her until the day I die. I don't care how that happens…just as long as it happens sooner rather than later."
"Wow." Amy's eyes widened with her surprise. "You're sure of this, then…aren't you." It was a statement, not a question.
"I've never been more certain of anything in my whole life." The smile that filled Maura's face was dreamy and wistful. "I don't want to wait any longer. And if getting married at home plate in Fenway Park is what she wants, then it's what I want as well."
"That's very romantic." Amy grinned as she looked back down at the clip board, checking off a few things as she went.
"Well, it doesn't hurt that I promised our mothers a black-tie reception next month to celebrate our marriage." Maura leaned over Amy's shoulder to see what she was checking off.
"Sounds like a good compromise." Amy handed Maura the top page on the clip board. "Look about right to you?"
Maura ran her fingers through her hair and studied the page. It was a detailed outline of what each of their responsibilities was. As she read over each section, she started with pediatrics and smiled at her name in bold face type. Dr. Maura Rizzoli-Isles, Head of Pediatrics was to be her new title. A title she would proudly wear from this day forward. When she was a medical student, the rotation in pediatrics was her favorite. It gave her the chance to let go of the stiff, rigid person she prided herself on being. Instead, the easy smile and absolute trust from a child gave her the opportunity to look at the world through their eyes and that childlike wonder was something she longed to achieve. And since Valley had come into her life, she knew more than ever what it was she wanted to do now. No more death…no more crime…no more late nights and sixteen-hour days. Her family would come first and that meant big changes for everyone.
As she continued to peruse the outline, she felt a surge of pride at having the next two names alongside hers. Dr. Amy Hoffman: Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Dr. Steven Hoffman: Head of General and Family practice. It was a good start and she hoped as time went by, they would add to the roster.
"I appreciate that you used my…soon to be married name." Maura ran her fingertips over the bold face letters and smiled again.
"Well, since you are getting married in a few days I figured…why not." Amy shrugged her shoulders. "I like the idea of breaking up the clinic into separate parts for each practice. I think it will lend to the efficiency of getting people in and out easier."
Maura sat down, leaned back in her chair and steepled her index fingers, bringing them to rest on her chin. "We still have plenty of room for expansion. I'm hoping to add some phycologists to the mix as well. The goal is to have a clinic that can accommodate most branches of medical service under one roof. And it will help to cut the costs." She mused aloud. Of course, with the Isles Foundation taking on the bulk of the financial burden, she knew she had some wiggle room. Even though her father had traveled outside of the country to contribute his medical skills to those less fortunate, she was certain he would be proud of this new endeavor to help those at home who had fallen on hard times. And with the political climate being what it was today, she wanted to make sure no one was turned away from getting the help they needed no matter what their sexual orientation, race, sex, religion was…just to name a few. "I'm also thinking we may need to hire some bilingual staff as well."
"I agree." Amy wrote down her thoughts on the second page of her clip board. "When can we start interviewing the nurses and physicians assistants?"
"When do you plan on coming back?" Maura raised an eyebrow in question.
"Well…" Amy leaned back and smiled. "Steve and I found a great place in North End thanks to your real-estate agent. A little pricey for a one bedroom but it's the same in California. I'm hoping we can look for a house in a year or two if everything goes well. So, to answer your question, we'll be back in two weeks to sign the lease and start moving in."
"Good." Maura nodded her approval. "North End is a great historical neighborhood. It might be a bit of a drive getting to the clinic but nothing like the traffic out west. And you won't be too far from Jane and I."
"Speaking of Jane…things are good?" Amy set her clipboard down in her lap so she could give Maura her full attention.
"Very good, obviously." Maura flashed a grin that exposed the dimple in her left cheek.
"Will you be able to give the clinic the kind of time it's going to need to get off the ground?" Amy didn't want to sound troubled, but she knew what Maura and Jane had been through and she wouldn't blame Maura for wanting to be with Jane more.
The grin dropped from Maura's face and was replaced with a serious expression. "You know I'm committed to making this work, so yes. Jane won't be starting at the Academy until spring and because of the erratic schedule I'll be working until we are established, she's going to stay home with Valley until we're settled."
"Don't be mad at me Maura, you know I had to ask." Amy shook her head before pushing several strands of blonde hair away from her eyes.
"I know, and I appreciate the time you and Steve are putting into this. And all I ask is give me until you come back in two weeks to get things settled at home and enjoy my wife and daughter uninterrupted." Maura's easy smile returned.
"I can do that. I'll have Sasha start setting up some interviews when we get back. We are already getting inquiries, so it won't hurt to start scheduling them." Amy picked up her clipboard again and wrote something down. "Are you satisfied with the office space?" She asked as she waved her hands around the crude version of what would become Maura's office.
"I am. I have a few ideas, but I just want something simple with clean lines…something efficient." Maura looked around at the sparsely furnished space. The concrete floors had yet to be covered with carpet, but the walls were painted the pale blue she had picked. There was a folding table and several chairs scattered around with papers and files littering the top, a makeshift office for everyone until everything was complete.
Amy nodded her understanding as silence fell over them. Fatigue began to eat at Maura causing her to yawn just as Steve rounded the corner with a huge smile on his face.
"This is gonna be great!" The dark haired, dark eyed man with dimples to rival Jane's said with excitement.
"Hey Baby…" Amy pushed herself up from her chair, following Maura's lead and yawning. "Did you have fun with the contractor?" She asked as she stretched her arms over her head.
"I did. So much fun!" He looked like a kid in a candy store. "This place is gonna be so cool when it's done." He balanced on the balls of his feet.
"I'm glad you're excited." Maura stood up as well. It had been a long day and she was ready to go home and see what kind of damage Jane and their moms had done shopping for Valle's bedroom. "I think I'll leave you two to finish up, if that's okay."
"Absolutely." Steve reached out to grab his wife and pull her into a hug. "We've got a reservation for dinner at 7:30 so we've got time. You sure you don't want to join us?" He asked, a hopeful look on his face. Both he and Amy had heard so much about Jane that they wanted to meet her but had yet to do so.
"I think I'm just going to go home and see what Jane bought for Valley's room." Maura yawned again. "Plus, I'm beat. But I promise we'll get together when you come back in two weeks." She added when she saw the look of disappointment on both of their faces.
"Okay, but we're gonna hold you to that." Amy pointed at her and smiled. "Now get out of here. We've got the rest handled for the day. I'll call you tomorrow before we leave. Oh, and Maura…" she reached out a hand for Maura to take. When Maura took the offered hand, they both smiled at each other knowingly. "Best of luck…Dr. Rizzoli-Isles."
"Thanks Amy." Maura allowed herself to be pulled into a hug between both Amy and Steve. "I'll talk to you later." She said as she disentangled herself from their hold. Taking one more glance around, she grinned at the prospect of what tomorrow would bring. The anticipation of something new and exciting was on the horizon and she couldn't wait for it to begin.
The late afternoon sun was just beginning to dip down past the roofs of the houses that now shaded the backyard where Maura sat, a glass of red wine in one hand and her cell phone in the other. Upon arriving home, she had changed into a pair of sweat pants and Jane's Red Sox sweatshirt, the one that was worn from years of use but still as soft as the day Jane had given it to her. She sat, curled up on the outside sofa enjoying the first vestiges of fall as October got closer. The air was cooler with hardly any humidity and the trees were just starting to change colors, the green leaves bleeding into yellow, red, and orange.
Taking a deep breath, she thought back to her accomplishments of the day. Everything was ready for Saturday even though Angela continued to lament that they only had a few days left to get ready. The suite would be stocked with food and drinks, and she had arranged for a small cake to commemorate the day. Her promise to her mother and Angela to allow them the chance to plan a cocktail party was a small concession for the two women, one she was okay making. Her mind drifted to her and Jane's prom night and how sexy Jane had looked in her tuxedo. She couldn't help but shiver at the image conjured up in her memory and she smiled at the prospect of getting Jane to wear it again for the cocktail party.
Her eyes scanned the sky as twilight slipped over the horizon, changing the colors from light to a deeper, darker blue with wisps of cotton candy colored clouds sweeping across the expansive open space above her. She looked down when her phone lit up, indicating she had received a text message.
"On the way home, can't wait to show you what we got…" Jane's message read, and Maura smiled. She looked at the time and realized their dinner should be arriving right about the same time. Tonight, it was Thai, one of her favorite comfort foods.
Bringing her wine glass up to her lips, she took a sip of the rich, oaky liquid that held the hint of blackberry's as she swallowed. She looked around the small backyard and wondered what they might be able to do to make it a place for Valley to play. Something fun, yet safe she mused to herself. And then there was Joe Friday. It had been a hard sell for Jane but after seeing Valley's face every time she saw the little pup, who could refuse. 'We're going to need a dog house.' She thought as she continued to look around, gauging the best place for it. It would have to be somewhere between the house and the cottage where Angela was so Joe could go between the two easily since Angela had fallen in love with the little mutt as well.
A dull ache hit her in the center of her chest when Bass came to mind. She had missed him terribly, but she also realized that he wasn't the kind of pet to have around the house with a toddler and energetic pup. And then she realized she could take Valley to meet him the next time she visited the botanical gardens at the university and the thought made her smile.
The sound of Jane and their mothers coming through the front door pulled Maura from her reverie and she let out a tired sigh. It wasn't from disappointment but from frustration. She had hoped to have Jane alone so they could make up for lost time but the appearance of Angela and Constance bearing bags and smiles indicated there would be no alone time at least not yet. But then she was surprised when the two women passed her, laughing and smiling. She sat up, thinking she hadn't been seen and waved. "Hey, how did shopping go?"
"Oh, hey sweetheart." Constance waved back but continued walking towards Angela's cottage. "Can't stop to talk, we've got dinner reservations at the club…but we had a great time shopping." She held up the bags she was carrying.
"Jane's pulling up the rear." Angela grinned as she followed Constance.
"What's in the bags?" Maura pointed in question.
"We got some things for Valley's room and some clothes…and you know, stuff…" Constance stuttered uncharacteristically.
Maura raised a suspicious eyebrow at the two women who looked at her with guilty expressions on their faces. "Am I going to like this…stuff?" She asked.
"Perhaps…" Angela winked before digging in her purse to fish out her keys. "But we're grandma's so…indulge us."
Maura watched as they disappeared behind Angela's door, both with smirks on their face but their excitement was contagious. A wide grin spread across her lips and it grew wider still when Jane appeared in the doorway with her own bags.
"Hey, Doc…" Jane leaned against the door jam, and held up her shopping score.
"That's Dr. Rizzoli-Isles to you." Maura gave a saucy wink as she took a sip of her wine. "I stopped and got you a twelve pack of beer." She nodded her head towards the kitchen.
"Dr. Rizzoli-Isles…I like the sound of that." Jane set the bags down and disappeared only to return with a cold bottle of beer in her right hand.
"You do, do you?" Maura slid over on the couch to allow room for Jane.
"I do." Jane dropped down next to Maura and grinned. "I always thought you were sexy as hell in your black scrubs but throw in the white jacket…ummmm…" she hummed into her bottle as she took a sip.
"I think I might need to go with something more kid friendly." Maura said with a frown, then smiled as a thought came to her. "I can keep the black scrubs for home though."
"Hummmm…a little role playing, huh?" Jane set her beer bottle down and leaned close to Maura with a lustful grin on her face. "Only if I get to play the nerdy professor." She said as her lips hovered over Maura's.
"I think I may have something else more suitable for that scenario…" Maura said as she ran her fingers through Jane's dark, unruly hair. "And maybe you could wear those black framed glasses you wore for that undercover job you did a few months back." She used her thumbs to trace along Jane's eyebrows before pressing her mouth to the slightly parted lips hovering over hers. The kiss was soft and pleasant but there was an undercurrent of hunger that she had been trying to fight since she had gotten home. They had agreed to wait until they got married on Saturday to make love and after more than three weeks of not touching Jane, she thought she might die. The velvet touch of Jane's tongue skimming along her own caused her body to tremble and she moaned as Jane's fingers slipped under the Red Sox sweatshirt she was wearing. "Jane, please…" her voice was breathless and shaky.
"I haven't touched you in so long." Jane moved her lips over Maura's cheek as her fingers found the soft, warm skin along Maura's side. "I know we said we'd wait, but I think I'm gonna die if I don't at least get to touch you."
Maura sucked in a sharp breath as Jane's hand traveled higher, tickling her ribs with feather light caresses. It was enough to break her resolve when warm fingers stroked the underside of her left breast drawing a moan from her mouth just before Jane captured it in another, much needier kiss.
"No bra?" Jane pulled away to look Maura in the eyes. "You're not making this easy for me." She leaned her forehead against Maura's and let out a heavy sigh. But her fingers continued to stroke the curve of Maura's breast until her thumb reached a nipple and she rubbed her thumb over it, teasing it to a hard peak. Maura's hot breath brushed against her cheek and she watched as hazel-green eyes fluttered shut under her gentle ministrations. "You feel so good…" she whispered as her lips skimmed along Maura's now flushed cheeks.
Arching into Jane's touch, Maura opened her eyes. "I don't want to wait…" she was having trouble catching her breath as her body responded to Jane's touch in such a way she thought she might never be the same again.
"As much as I wish I could give you what you want right here and now…" Jane reluctantly withdrew her hand and dropped her head to Maura's shoulder. "Our moms…" she started to say and was interrupted by two throats clearing simultaneously.
Maura closed her eyes and groaned in frustration, giving Jane a gentle push away. The appearance of their mothers had been an instant shock of something like cold water on her body, pushing her desire to the back of her mind.
"I think we should put a bell you my Ma." Jane couldn't stop herself from shivering at Maura's comment but tried to roll her eyes to cover it up.
"I am not a cat." Angela groused as she mimicked Jane's eye roll. "Besides…if you insist on keeping all of that…" she waved her hands at them. "Out of the bedroom, what do you expect?"
Constance laughed, a playful twinkle in her eyes. "Come on Angela, don't you remember those early days of being so in love that you can't keep your hands off each other?"
Angela's cheeks turned bright red as she nodded. "It's been a while, but no, I haven't forgotten."
"Okay, I get it. You want to know as much about my sex life as I want to know about yours." Jane sat back and crossed her right arm over her left, still resting in a sling. "But I still think you need a bell…"
"How about I just jingle my keys as a warning." Angela gave Jane a smug grin.
"Don't you have dinner reservations?" Maura tried not to sound frustrated and tired.
"We do, and I suggest we head out so we can get there on time." Constance smiled at Maura and then nodded at Jane.
Angela nodded her agreement and started to follow Constance but then stopped, turning to Jane. "Frankie said he and Tommy will pick up Valley's bedroom set and drop it off tomorrow. Should I tell him to call first?" She couldn't help the sarcasm from slipping from her lips.
"Depends on what time." Jane said, catching the sarcasm.
"He said around three or four." Angela voice sounded tentative.
"That'll be fine, Angela." Maura let out a heavy sigh, not at all amused by the constant battle for dominance between Jane and Angela.
"You look tired, honey." Constance tilted her head to get a better look at Maura. "Everything coming together with the clinic?"
"It is. But there's still a lot to do before we're finished." Maura rubbed her eyes as if she had just noticed how tired she was.
"Well, get some sleep." Constance leaned forward and placed a kiss on Maura's forehead. "And you…" she turned her dark, blue eyes to Jane. "Don't keep her up too late." She said and then winked knowingly.
Jane laughed and nodded understandingly. "I'll take care of her." She said suddenly turning serious as she glanced at Maura, noticing the dark rings under her eyes. She frowned but then her face relaxed when Maura turned to her with a smile. "Have fun tonight."
"You too." Angela quipped with a grin. "And I think your dinner has arrived." She could see a car parked in the driveway with the logo of the Thai restaurant they frequented.
"I didn't know you ordered takeout. I would have made us dinner if you'd wanted." Jane pushed up from where she was sitting, pulling her wallet from her pocket.
"I got distracted." Maura stood up as well. "Good night ladies…" she said to her mother and Angela's retreating backs getting a wave in response. "Hey…want to tell me about the bedroom set you got for Valley? It's functional…not anything crazy, right?"
Reaching out to take Maura by the hand, Jane smirked. "How long have you been dying to ask me that?"
"Since you walked in the door." Maura laughed. "But like I said..." she ducked her head as she spoke. "I got distracted."
"Well, let me get out dinner and then we can talk about all the amazing things I got for Valley's room and…" Jane wiggled her eyebrows playfully. "If you're lucky, maybe I can think of a way to distract you again later."
"I'm counting on it." Maura pulled Jane into a hug and kissed the dimple in her chin. "And I'm already the luckiest woman in the world." She said as she placed her lips against Janes. "Now hurry up and pay the man so we can eat and finish what we started earlier." Letting go of Jane, she turned towards the kitchen to refill her wine glass. As she glanced over her shoulder and smiled at Jane, she realized that she was indeed the luckiest woman in the world and she hoped nothing would change that.
