21. School-girl Crush
He was the cool guy in school
and she just a part of the sparrow-flock.
(Never mind that she was a year
ahead of him at school).
They might've all been
splashed with black
but they burnt red…still
in the crowd
while she…she faded away
into the shadow backdrop
of long-drafting halls.
He could have been the torch,
she supposed: that light which spread
tingling warmth through fingertips
and toes
But she fell in love, in the end,
with the burnt fingers in a future
gone.
He had loved her once, she knew
and it crushed her all the more
knowing
she had been better off in the shadows
of admiration than in a full-blown
declaration of love
And she might've saved him something too
if she hadn't cast her heart upon him
and burnt him too…
Or maybe
she could have enjoyed her time with him
if she'd said it sooner:
that she'd been crushed by him.
