CHAPTER 14
Previously on What Could Have Been:
"Okay Dad, we need you! We're ready to push again."
"Ok, I'm here. Bells, you ready to push now?"
"Yeah, I am so ready to push again."
"Okay, Bells, you can do this honey...now push Bells, push!..1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8..9..10..and breathe, and again..count it...okay breathe and push Bells push!"
"One more push Bella and the head will be out okay?"
"Okay," gasped Bella, panting and huffing.
"Come on Bella honey, it's time to push again... his head's out now honey, just breathe now Bells, you're doing so awesome baby! I love you so much!"
"Easy Bells, almost there honey."
"Okay, the shoulders are out, start pushing when you feel a strong contraction."
"Here comes one now! OW! OW! Hehehe...hoo hoo hoo!"
"Okay mommy and daddy!"
And now on with the story!:
"Okay Bella, once more and push!...count it out...! Okay mommy and daddy, you have a beautiful baby girl!"
"A GIRL?!"
"Yes! A girl!"
Bella was so exhausted and happy to have not only a son but a daughter too, one for her and one for Jacob, this was amazing. They were parents now! She loved Jacob so much for giving her this wonderful chance to be the mother of his children. He had always been the sun in her sky and they had made beautiful little stars of their own.
"Wow! A little girl, she looks like you Bella!"
"Okay, Dad, come over here and cut the cord."
"Like that?"
"Yep, you're good at this!"
"Thank you for everything."
"You're welcome Jacob. Your baby girl weighs six pounds and four and a half ounces and she is nineteen and a half inches long, born at four thirty five a.m. on October thirty first."
"Bells honey, I'm going to run down to the waiting room to let the families know about our new additions."
"Okay, Jake, I'll wait here then shall I?"
"She may be a bit groggy I think," said the physician.
"Thank you Dr. Angeles," Jacob said.
"You're very welcome Jacob. Hold onto this one Bella, he is so worth it!"
"Both babies are very healthy and strong, you guys did a great job!" the nurse said.
"May I hold them?"
"Of course you can Bella."
Both babies were brought over to Bella. She was crying because she was so happy. Her daughter was handed to her and the little thing latched on to her breast to nurse immediately. Just as Jacob came back he was invited to help her get their son to latch onto her other breast to nurse. He hesitated at first, then realizing the golden opportunity, he pitched in with whole-hearted enthusiasm. The baby boy was as excited as his sister to get a first meal. Bella was exhausted but that didn't mean anything to her now because she had a new, healthy family. The nurses came in with paperwork requesting names for the new babies. Bella spoke up at once.
"I like Joseph William Black!"
"Of all the ones we talked about, I like that one best, Bella."
"What should we call our little girl, Jake?"
"I was thinking about Christianna Serenade Black?"
"Aw, Serenade! She'll have our mom's names mashed up in the middle!"
"Yeah, she will."
"I love their names!"
"Me too Bells. By the way, can I announce our engagement when we get home from the hospital?"
"Yes, we can do it then Jake."
"I'll be back in a few 'kay?"
"Sure sure, Jake."
Jake returned to the waiting room where everyone was conversing noisily until they saw him. They asked how Bella was doing. He gave them an update and told them the babies' names. There were some chuckles and some 'aw's and coos. He went back to the room; Bells had just finished nursing them and they were sleeping peacefully in her arms. He picked them both up and went out to introduce them to their family.
"Everyone, including Grandpas and Grandma; I would like to introduce you all to: Joseph William Black and his baby sister: Christianna Serenade Black!"
"One of each, how cool is that!" Charlie said smiling warmly at his grandchildren.
Billy's eyes were shining brightly.
"You did well my son, they're beautiful! I know your mother is honored to have her name carried by your daughter, and she is so very proud of you! Thank you Jacob for keeping her memory alive for all of us. I love you son!"
Jacob started to cry when his father spoke those words that filled his heart with so much joy. He thought the tears would never stop falling. He smiled at Billy and finally realized just how proud his father was of him. He too was a proud father now and knew how he felt when he looked at his own children.
"You're welcome Dad, Bells and I love you too and we wanted our parents remembered. Bella said since Joseph is Charlie's middle name we could give the baby the nickname of Joey and our little girl will be called Christi. Is that okay with you Charlie?"
"Sure sure, Jacob," Charlie's eyes were getting a little misty too.
"Thank you both, we are all blessed by you and Bella."
"Without all of you we wouldn't be where we are today. We wouldn't even exist. You all believed in us and stood by us for so long through the good and bad times. We love you all!"
"I love you Jacob and thank you for including my name in your daughter's. Thank you from all of us for our grandchildren."
"You're welcome Renee."
"May I hold my grandson?"
"Sure Dad here you go."
Jake walked to where his father was sitting and leaned down to hand him his grandson to hold for the very first time. He saw his father's eyes fill up with tears as he gazed at an exact copy of his own son.
"Oh gosh! He looks just like you did when you were a baby!"
"Really?"
"Yes he does! Even down to the same little smile when he's sleeping."
"May I hold my granddaughter Jake?"
He turned and walked over to Charlie and Renee and handed his little girl to her grandpa. Charlie was looking just like Billy had when he placed the little girl in his arms.
"Sure, Charlie, here you go."
"She looks like Bella did when she was a baby, just with russet colored skin. She has the same color hair and eyes and also the same nose and mouth as her momma!"
"I am sorry to cut this short, I have to get them back to Bella now, okay? But the doctor said you can see them in an hour in the nursery, okay guys?"
They all agreed and Charlie gave Jake Christi and Billy handed over Joey. Jacob smiled and took them back to Bella. The nurse opened the door for him, she helped him put the babies back into their bassinettes. She told him she would bring them back after their tests were done.
After Bella was moved to a private room, she smiled at Jake groggily and told him she loved him. He kissed her softly on the lips and held her hand while she slept.
The nurse came in to check on Bella, she said everything looked good and that she would be out for awhile. She said she'd bring some breakfast when she woke up. Jake decided to let Bella sleep awhile and he went down to the nursery to see his kids.
'Wow! I have kids!,' he thought to himself.
When he got there the nurse came out to get him so he could spend time with Joey and Christi. He went inside with her and picked up Joseph, sitting in the rocking chair with his son. He kissed the top of his head and the baby snuggled down into his arms and cooed; soaking up his father's body heat. He opened his eyes and looked at Jacob, and smiled at him for the first time, showing his contentment at being in his daddy's arms.
Billy smiled at his son through the glass and Renee was so taken with the sight. Joey was finally asleep and Jacob put him down and walked over to pick up Christi since she was fussing. The moment he held her she calmed down and he sat in the rocker and kissed her forehead telling her that he loved her. She opened her beautiful chocolate brown eyes and, looking up at him; smiled her mother's smile.
It felt so wonderful for Jacob to have a family of his own. He had always pictured his life with Bella this way with their children. He sat there for awhile rocking his daughter and marveled at what he had now with Bella.
"Jake is so good with the kids, the minute he picks them up, they calm right down," Charlie said.
"Jacob was always a calm and happy baby, he hardly ever cried," Billy said.
"We should go home for awhile and rest, let the kids have some time alone with their babies." Charlie said.
"Yeah, we all could use some sleep."
The grandparents tapped on the window to tell Jacob they were leaving. He waved at them with Christi's little fist pulled up from the depths of her pink blanket and they waved their goodbyes to their new granddaughter.
Jacob put Christi back down into her crib with her brother and softly stroked his fingertips across his babies' cheeks. He went back to Bella's room to find her awake and eating; she was so hungry that she actually growled when he got to close to her food.
"This is MY Jello Jack! Back off! Get your own!"
"Hey Bells, you feeling okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine Jake," she actually growled at him again even while her voice was sounding cheerful. Finally, her eyes rolled back into their proper position and she spoke to him normally.
"How're the babies?"
"Just wonderful. I spent some time in the nursery holding them and I realized that I'm a damn good dad!"
"Oh you are, are you? See! I told you so!"
"Yes, momma, you were right all along!"
"I can't wait until we all can go home."
"The doctor says you can go home in a couple of days WITH the babies. I'm gonna go home later so I can make sure the nursery is all ready and get the car seats set up okay?"
"Okay, Jake. Baby you look so tired."
"I am but I don't care. I have you and two healthy babies, that's all that matters to my heart."
"I know but Jake, I don't want you falling asleep while you're driving. So go home and get some rest baby? I'll see you tonight okay?"
"Okay, 'mom', I'll go home and get some sleep. I'll come around dinner time, okay?"
"Sounds good. Jake? I love you and I want you safe. I'll see you later."
"Yes ma'am, and I love you more!"
Jacob nailed her to the pillow with a passionate kiss to last her the duration of their time apart.
"You are the most wonderful mate, Bells. Thank you for being the mother to my children."
"Thank you for making me the mother of the family you always wanted, my Jacob."
She drifted off to sleep quickly after her statement of dedication to Jacob's future. He chuckled at how out of it she was and kissed her lips softly to tell her goodbye for just a little while. He hugged his beloved girl goodbye, even as she slept, and headed for home. He called Rachel and asked her to grab some baby girl clothes too. He got home to the cabin and went inside, Emily was making lunch.
"Hey Jacob! You're home! Tell me all the news from the delivery room!"
"They're here Emily! A boy AND a girl! I know! We were so surprised! They are fine and healthy. Joseph William Black, called Joey and Christianna Serenade Black, called Christi. It was a bit of a surprise...one of each instead of two boys like we thought. But, oh Emily, they are beautiful and healthy and everything we could have asked for. I came home to get the car seats ready and the diaper bags and everything for them."
"I can get all the necessary girl stuff in the nursery and it will be ready for a boy and a girl now."
"Thank you Em."
"You're welcome Jake. I wanted everything to be easy for you and Bella, and if you want I can stay here awhile to help out with the babies."
"Oh Emily, that would be terrific! I think it might take us awhile to get them on a schedule that we can handle on our own."
"Yeah, Claire was like that. She took awhile to get situated on a decent schedule. I think she was either two months or maybe four months old when she slept through the night."
"That long huh?"
"Yeah because her mom didn't have a lot of help when little Claire was born, so I offered to help her with her daughter. That's why she stays with Sam and me so much. We are her second family when she visits."
"Emily, I am cool with you staying that long if you are, okay? And I know Bella will appreciate it a lot, do you think Sam will be okay with it?"
"Yeah, he understands why I'm here and Rachel wants to help too."
"Sure sure, no problem. This will be a great chance to spend some time with my sister."
"It will be a great chance for you to get closer to Rachel, Jacob."
It would be nice to have a lot of help with the kids. Emily got all the stuff Bella and Jacob needed for the babies, so Jake could go up and sleep awhile. He went upstairs and passed out on the bed. He was so damn tired; he had been up for five days now. He had only gotten three hours of sleep before Sam woke him to go to the hospital.
Bella ate her lunch and got up and walked around a bit. She still hurt but not as much now. The nurse said she could go down to the nursery and feed the babies there because it would be a little easier and she would have help. She went into the nursery and sat down in the rocker, the nurse named Tori brought Joseph to her so she could feed him first.
Putting him to her left breast, he latched on without a problem and fed on that side until he had enough. Bella got up and changed his diaper because he was wet. She then put him up to her shoulder and burped him. She rubbed his back until he fell asleep, then laid him down. She sat back down in the rocker and Tori brought Christi over to her to feed. She put her to her right breast and she latched on and didn't have any trouble either. Bella fed her until she was full then burped her and changed her diaper too. She laid her back down because she was asleep. Tori told her that she would see her later when it was time to feed them again, that she would bring them to her after she ate her dinner. She told Tori "ok" and went back to her room to bed and sleep for awhile before Jacob came back to see her at dinner time. She prayed he was able to get some rest, he had looked dead on his feet!
"Miss Swan?" nurse Anna said.
"Hmmm..? What is it?"
"It's time for you to eat dinner now."
"Is Jacob here?"
"No, hon, not yet but I'm sure he'll be here soon. Why don't you eat your dinner while you can before Tori brings in the babies for their nightly feedings okay?"
"Okay Anna, I will. Thank you."
"You're welcome, Miss Swan."
"Call me Bella, please."
"Alright Bella, be back in awhile okay?"
"Okay, bye Anna."
"Bye Bella."
She started eating her dinner and it was good. There was actually steak, carrots, mashed potatoes and then pudding for dessert. She even had milk and tea as well. She was very full from dinner, but she missed Jake and hoped he got enough to eat and sleep today. She understood if he didn't come back right away because he was dead tired and so was she but she needed to feed her children and was just waiting for Tori to bring them to her. She decided to call the house and see how Jacob was doing.
"Hello? Bella? How are you?" Emily asked.
"I'm sore and tired but I'm good, is Jake awake yet?"
"Not yet, but I can wake him if you like. He crashed about twenty minutes after he walked through the door. I'm surprised he even made it upstairs without falling asleep!"
"I feel bad for him, I know he really wanted to stay with me but it's okay, I'd rather have him rested than wrapped around a tree somewhere. Have Sam keep an eye on him so he gets enough sleep okay?"
"Sure Bella, we will, hon. You still have a day and a half left right?"
"Yeah, I do, so I'll see Jake sometime tomorrow."
"Okay, Bella, goodnight."
"Goodnight Em."
"Hello? Bella? I have your babies, are you ready to feed them? I will stay here with you to help okay?"
"Yes, Tori, thank you."
Tori handed Joseph to her and she put him to her breast to feed. He snuggled to her, he was a very hungry baby boy. She stroked his head and touched his face, he smiled while nursing. He looked just like Jacob. There was the same russett skin and hair and the same mouth and the most expressive brown eyes she'd ever seen. As he nursed, Bella fell in love with her new son.
He had a way of telling you exactly what he wanted with just a look, so much alike. Jacob and Joseph were carbon copies. When Joseph was done nursing, Bella burped him and rubbed his back, changed his diaper and sang him to sleep. Once he was sound asleep she handed him to Tori and the nurse placed him back into his cradle.
Tori brought Christi to Bella and she started nursing her, she was very hungry too. Bella marveled at her daughter, she had mahogany hair just like her mother's, the same eye color, the same mouth, but she was a russett color just like her daddy and her brother. She was so beautiful to look at, the best of both of her parents put into one. The one thing she had that wasn't Bella's was her daddy's smile, she looked like Jacob when she smiled.
Bella held her little hand, her fingers were so tiny and so were her toes. She would smile at her mother when she touched her feet and sang to her, she loved it when Bella would sing to her. She finally finished nursing, Bella burped her and changed her too. Christi fell asleep while her mother rubbed her back. Bella had to lay her down because she was so tired. Tori told Bella she would see her around two a.m. to feed the babies again. Bella laid down and closed her eyes and went to sleep.
"Sam?"
"Yeah, Em? What's up?"
"How's Jacob?"
"He's fine, still sleeping, should he be getting back to the hospital?"
"Bella, told me to make sure he got enough sleep because she didn't want him to have an accident."
"He's been out a long time, maybe we should try and get him to eat something?"
"I made dinner, you want to get Jake up to eat?"
"Yeah, I'll go wake him."
Sam kissed Emily and went upstairs to wake up Jacob. When he got up there, Jake was laying across the bed, out like a light. He went over to Jake and tried to wake him up, shaking him vigourously. He opened his eyes reluctantly. Sam asked him if he was hungry and felt like eating dinner.
Jacob responded, "sure", and they both went down to the kitchen to eat.
"Hey Jake, how you feeling?"
"Like I'm drunk! My head is so fuzzy! I can't believe I slept that long, it was hard to wake up!"
"You want some coffee?"
"Yeah, I guess so."
"Here you go, Jake. Drink this; it might help you stay awake for awhile and then you can sleep to a decent hour. You'll feel better."
"What's for dinner Em?"
"Baked chicken, green beans, baked potatoes with butter and sour cream and french rolls. Sound good Jake?"
"Damn, Em! Who you feeding? An army?"
"Yeah! An army of wolves!"
"You're funny Emily, a very funny girl. But she's a damn good cook though Sam!"
"I even planned a welcome home dinner for Bella and the babies when they come home from the hospital! I thought you and Bella could have a nice dinner together and Rachel and I will watch the babies. Is that okay Jake?"
"Sounds really nice, I miss my sis. I feel bad that I didn't make it back to the house tonight to talk to Rachel."
"Bella told Sam and me to make sure you got enough sleep."
"Sounds just like Bells, she's always looking out for me."
"She said she would see you tomorrow afternoon."
"Yeah, I need some more sleep before I drive anywhere. I should be better in the morning."
"We'll see in the morning, how you feel, okay?" Sam asked.
"Yeah, okay Sam."
"You want some more food Jake?"
"No, thank you Em, I'm full. I think I'm gonna get some air on the front porch for awhile."
"I'll sit with you just in case you fall asleep out there. I can carry you back into the house alright?"
"Alright Sam."
