37. Jokers
Maybe she spent too much time with her father
and his habitat of jokes.
Or maybe he spent too much time with his mother
and the habitat she shared with them.
It wasn't as though they had many other places to be;
her parents had split up, his mother was dead
and the only place to find solace was in the shop
Breathless with laughter, ribs aching from the sheer
desperation of it all when they fought tears
with gales – but they had a lot of laughs together too.
Laughed until the Dementors came home,
her father said, full of sorrow and regret
And even at that young age they knew,
to avoid their parents' mistake.
