39. Sisters and Brothers

They were the careful ones
who watched from the window while others ran amuck
and then got in trouble along.

They were the ones who sat silently with their books
while the sun shone.

They were the ones who scowled when their siblings came to them
asking to play, who'd shoo them away instead
and watch them find solace and peace
with each other.

They were the ones who fought without fighting
for first place

And who lost to their siblings elsewise,
when it came to realising the feelings that had blossomed
in their hearts

And the ones who didn't marry
until their childish siblings
had children of their own.
