I don't own Divergent.
Hey, everyone. Sorry for not updating for a while. I think you guys'll like this update. As usual, thanks for reading, and please review/rate/favorite. And please share this story with your friends! That would make me super happy. Anyway, enjoy! And there are translations at the bottom for the Spanish.
I hug him and drop back down to the bed. "I'm tired."
"Tris," he groans.
"G'night," I reply, snuggling up to him and shutting my eyes tightly.
The bed is shaking. At first I think it's part of my dream, but then I realize I'm waking up and Tobias is tossing and turning so much that the entire bed is moving. "Tobias!" I say sharply. I pull away from his arms and pin him to the bed. "Tobias!"
"Stop," he rasps. "No, Marc- stop! Don't - TRIS!" he bellows.
"Tobias, wake up," I say, slapping him.
He sits up so fast he nearly throws me off the bed. I grab onto him. "Tris!" His hands roam my body, focusing on my stomach. "Oh, Tris," he murmurs, burying his head in my shoulder. "Tris."
"What were you dreaming about?" I ask.
He squeezes his head between his hands. "It's…I - I can't talk about it." He shakes his head. "It started out so good," he murmurs, one hand on my stomach and the other holding my left hand.
I run my fingers through his hair and then begin to rub his back. "Well, whatever it was, it's over." I kiss his cheeks and kiss the tears away.
He looks up. "Marry me?"
I stare down at him. I run through everything in my head. I guess I must sit and think for a while, because soon he leans up and kisses me. "So it's a no again, then?"
I press my lips to his again and shake my head. When I pull away, I whisper, "Yes. I'll…marry you."
Tobias kisses me again and then presses kisses to anywhere he can reach without removing my clothes. "I love you," he gasps between kisses. He hugs me tightly. Then, grinning sheepishly, he reaches into his backpack and pulls out the ring. "Can I…put it on your finger?"
I hold out my hand, looking down. "How did you… Did you bring that from New York? How did you find it in the dark?"
Tobias gives me a nervous smile. "I…keep it in the same place, and I think about it a lot."
I lean down, heart panging in my chest, and kiss him. "I've been thinking about saying yes since Seattle."
He laughs bitterly. "My family turn you?"
I kiss him. "No, it was all you." I hug him and hold him tight. "Since I met you, Tobias, it's been all you."
He looks deep into my eyes. "I love you, Beatrice."
"I love you, too," I reply, leaning my forehead onto his.
"It's been nearly five months since I first asked," he murmurs.
"And nearly five minutes since I said yes," I retort.
"Mmm," he hums.
"Mmm," I agree.
The next day, I wake Tobias early to go speak with my parents and Caleb. The grin hasn't worn off Tobias' face.
"Dad?" I knock on his door again. "Dad!"
"PAPA!" AJ yells. "Someone's at the door!"
"I heard, Aje," Dad says. "No tienes que decirme otra vez."
"Sorry, Papa," he says. "But open the door. I wanna see Mom and Dad."
Dad chuckles. "Okay, AJ." He opens the door, and smiles at us. "Hey, Bea. Do you guys need something?" I nod and grin, whispering in his ear. "Of course I'll go get her," he replies. "AJ, quédate con tus padres."
"Sí, Abuelo." AJ hugs me. "Hi, Mommy. Can I come train initiates with you again?"
"I want you to stay with Nana today, bud," I tell him, smoothing his hair.
AJ pouts. "But -"
"No buts."
"Mom!"
"No moms," I add, kissing his head. "Plus, you love hanging out with Nana. She spoils you rotten."
AJ sighs as my parents come back in. Tobias takes my left hand in his right. The ring still covers that thin patch of skin, but Tobias' hand covers mine.
"What happened, Bea?"
I smile. "Is Caleb here?"
Mom shakes her head. "Bea…?" she says uncertainly. "Are you two…?"
"Pregnant? No." I glance back at Tobias, who smiles broadly at my father and singles out my left ring finger, holding it out. "Engaged…yes."
Mom runs forward and hugs me tightly. "You finally said yes?"
I nod. "I…I did."
My dad pulls Tobias into a hug. "Congratulations." He pats his back once and then envelopes me in a hug.
"We need to go call my family," Tobias tells me.
Dad nods. "Go. I'll tell the initiates training is postponed a bit."
Tobias grins at me and kisses me. Then he kisses AJ's head. "Bud, do you know what engaged means?"
AJ shakes his head. "Can I come -"
"Sorry, bud. Nice try," I cut in.
Tobias grabs the hem of my shirt and pulls me closer. "It means your mom and I are getting married." He kisses AJ's head again. "It means we're going to be a real family."
AJ smiles shyly and shakes his head. "We already were one, Dad. You just didn't know it." Then he runs over to my mom.
Tobias smiles widely and kisses me. "C'mon, my love."
I lead him back to my room. "C'mon…let's call."
Tobias fiddles with the zipper on the side of my leg as we dial his family. After four or five dial tones, Robyn picks up.
"Hello? Tobias?" she says. "What's up? Ben, put that piece of chocolate down!"
"Do you have a minute?" Tobias asks. "I…we have something to tell everyone."
Robyn pauses. "Um, yeah. Give me a few minutes to…gather people. We'll call you back."
After she hangs up, Tobias taps out a rhythm on my leg. I rub the inside of his thigh tenderly and kiss his cheek. "Tobias, it'll be fine. They all love you and -" I grin at him "- quite frankly, they love me too."
Tobias chews on his lip. "Yeah, but I'm worried they won't think we've been a couple long enough."
I raise my eyebrow. "Tobias, you are the legal father of my child. I think we're past that."
Tobias leans his head down and kisses me. "I -" The phone rings, cutting him off. "Robyn?"
"Hey, Tobias," Robyn, James, Sierra, and Andreas chorus. "What's up? Is Tris with you?"
"Yeah," I say. "How are you guys?"
"What is your news?" Sierra says, tapping her foot.
"Be patient, Sierra," James says, a hint of laughter in his voice.
"I agree with her," Robyn says.
Tobias chews on his lip, but says, "Tris and I…are engaged."
Robyn squeals. "Finally!"
"Congratulations, guys!" Sierra says. "Not that we're that surprised."
"Finally got the guts to ask her?" James asks.
"More like she finally got the guts to say yes," Tobias replies, grinning.
I feel that in my stomach - it's like he punched me in the gut. However, I suck in a breath and say, "Thanks, guys."
Tobias glances over at me and squeezes my hand. I shake my head. He looks at me and says, "Well, guys, I think we have to go. We'll come visit over Christmas or something, okay?"
"Love you," they say.
"You too," Tobias answers. As soon as he's hung up, he hugs me. "What's wrong?"
"You made it sound like I was afraid to get married," I say, pulling his hands into my lap.
Tobias sighs. "I'm sorry. That was…insensitive. I only meant to - well, I was griping. But it was wrong. I should've been ecstatic. We're getting married!" He kisses me. "I am ecstatic."
A pit begins to settle in my stomach and I pull away, the burning sensation in my eyes making me want to hide from him. "Yeah," I agree.
"Tris," he says, pulling my face to face him. "Oh, Tris. I'm sorry. Do you feel like I pressured you into this? That's the last thing I want."
I look down and he hugs me. "I just…it's kind of overwhelming," I murmur.
He rubs my back. "I understa-"
"No, you don't. You think you do, but you don't." I pull away from him again. "You don't get what it's like, Tobias."
Tobias grabs my wrist and pulls me back onto the bed. "Then tell me."
"I can't." I furrow my brow. "I just…I can't."
"Tris, I will never understand if you don't let me," he answers. "I don't understand what's going on in your head." He chews on his lip as he fights back tears, too.
I sigh and stare at my feet. "I can't explain it because I don't understand it."
"Then just tell me what you're feeling," he begs, taking my hand.
"Scared," I whisper.
"Of…me?"
I shake my head. "I told you. I don't - I don't understand it."
Tobias pulls me onto his lap and begins to kiss along my neck. "Does this have to…do with the engagement?" At my nod, he continues, "Why don't we just stay engaged for now? We'll give you time to get adjusted to the idea, just like with the whole 'getting engaged' thing." He nuzzles at my neck. "The only thing I want is for you to be comfortable and loved." I feel his smile against my neck. "Well, you are loved. But you know what I mean."
I wrap my arms around my Tobias, pressing my face into his chest.
"I'll take that as a yes," he says, rubbing my back.
"Sorry I've been so emotional recently," I murmur.
"You do so much for me, Tris," he replies. "Why on earth would I be mad that you're going through a tough time?"
I shrug and grip him like he's my lifeline. My hands find purchase in his hair, on his hips, in the dips and curves of his body that I know so well.
"Hey now," he protests slightly. "How about we just head off to training the initiates? I'll text Max and tell him I'm still sick."
I climb off his lap, sighing, and pull my Divergent jacket back on. I forgot I'd taken it off.
Tobias stands behind me, pulls his jacket on, taps out a text to Max, and grabs his crutches. "Well? Aren't you going to lead me to the training room?"
I smile and let out a breath that almost sounds like a laugh. "Of course." I walk through the halls on autopilot, churning over our conversation in my head.
How could I possibly… How does Tobias deal with me? I'm so temperamental…and he's right, he doesn't understand what I feel. Hell, I don't understand what I feel. Most of the time I don't tell him what I'm feeling, either. Or thinking.
I open the door to the training room and look onto…one lonely initiates. "What the fuck?!" I spit. "Where are the others, kid?"
"Sleepin'."
"What's your name, boy?" I ask, grabbing a fistful of his shirt. He's laying flat on one of the tables used to hold knives. He's slight, too, and maybe only five-six.
"Maynard, ma'am."
"What mob are you from? Not Italian. Not Spanish. Definitely not Chinese." I peer at him. "A gang, maybe? You've got the right sort of tats for one."
"You hit the nail on the head." He sits up. "Nice to meet you, Six."
I nod. "Now, why don't you tell me why you're the only initiate here?"
"He isn't," another voice pipes up, and two people stand up. They were sitting underneath the table and I didn't notice them. Damnit.
"Morning, Six," Matthew says.
"Morning, Matthew," I grunt. I nod to the other kid. "What's your name?"
"Jockey."
"Funny name," I reply.
"Funny person," he retorts. "And I'm here, aren't I? That's more than you can say about some of the other initiates."
I shrug. "Now, why don't you three tell me why none of the other initiates are here?"
"'Acause Andrew told 'em we didn't have to be here early. Everyone's asleep," Maynard explains.
"Well, then they're all stupid," Tobias says. "Anytime a leader says you don't have to do something only means that they won't force you, but they want you there."
I nod. "I'm going to go wake them up." I kiss Tobias. "I'll be back in a few." I walk to the initiates' dorms and throw open the doors. My old bunk is inhabited by the girl that first made the pen weapon yesterday.
I grab the squirt gun my dad keeps behind the door and begin squirting people. "Get up, initiates. Just because my dad said training was starting later didn't mean it wasn't happening today. Hell, it didn't even mean it was starting later." I throw the empty gun at a kid. "You guys have fifteen minutes until I expect you to be in the training room. Spend it how you will, just be there. Your time starts now." I walk out of the dorms and return to the training room, where I find that Tobias has struck up a game of solitaire with Maynard. "You had better not be gambling," I warn Tobias.
He looks up. "Why?"
"Because all these boys are just going to cheat you out of every last penny," I explain, striding over and plucking up the money Maynard had been sliding out of Tobias' wallet. "Maynard, you know you aren't supposed to steal." I smack Tobias. "Don't you ever gamble with gangsters, mobsters - I don't care. Don't gamble at all."
Tobias gives me a sheepish smile. "Can I have my wallet back?"
"No." I pocket his wallet and clean up the cards. "The other initiates are going to be here soon. Look - well, try to look responsible."
Tobias gets to his feet and limps over to his original table. "Sorry."
I kiss his head. "It's okay." I set three tampons on each of the available tables and wait for the initiates. When they finally get there, I split them into groups. "You have and hour and three tampons," I say. "Be wise."
Immediately, there's a rush of sound. I raise my eyebrows and plop down next to Tobias. I set out another game of solitaire.
"What are you doing?" he asks, frowning.
I smile and hand him his wallet. "I'm going to teach you how to cheat at cards."
"I still don't -" Tobias starts, but an initiate interrupts.
"Six? We have a prototype," Matthew says. He hands it to me.
"What does it do?" I ask. "'Cause it only looks like a tampon to me."
"That's the point," Matthew says. "A tampon can't be used in a lot of ways. Therefore, at least in our opinion, the best way is simple stuffing it down someone's throat or something along those lines."
I hand him the unopened tampon package back. "Come up with something better."
I thread my fingers through Tobias'. "You packed yet, baby?" I ask.
"Almost."
"Why don't you go finish? I'll say goodbye to my parents and get AJ ready," I reply.
"Sounds good to me," Tobias replies, kissing me.
I walk to my parents' house and throw open the door. "Dad!" I yell. "Where's AJ?"
"Here, Mom," AJ says, hugging me. "I'm all packed, too. Nana made sure."
"Get your bags. We leave in five minutes." I kiss his head and walk into the kitchen, kissing my mother's cheek and hugging my dad. "G'morning, guys."
"Hey, Bea." Dad hugs me back. "It's too bad you have to go. We could really use your help. The initiates informed me that they liked your impromptu weapons training. Of course, they still got butchered after lunch with fights."
I chuckle and sit down across from them. "How is everything with, you know, Marcus?"
"Surprisingly quiet." Dad rubs my hand. "Once you two get AJ settled into school, we're going to need you to come stay up here for a few weeks."
I nod. "We have to go catch our flight, but I'll call Caleb."
We got off our flight about a half hour ago. Even though it's nearly one am, I told my dad I would call, and I will. But when I go to take my phone out, Tobias grabs my hand. "We need to talk," he informs me.
I search his eyes. "Okay." I shift AJ in my arms and Tobias pushes the cart with our luggage along. We get into the truck and I buckle AJ in, setting my phone with the sound machine app on next to him. When Tobias gets into the passenger seat, I say, "What do we need to talk about?"
"I don't think you should go."
"Why not?" I pull out of the garage.
"It's dangerous, and, frankly speaking, it's not your responsibility." Tobias kisses my cheek. "I love you, and I would die if you did. This is too dangerous."
"No," I reply. "It's not. It's my duty as a Prior. I have to do this, Tobias."
"Why can't Caleb?"
"Caleb was never meant to take over the Divergents," I reply. "He doesn't have the right personality. He's an Erudite, and I'm an Abnegation-Dauntless-Erudite split. A true Divergent. Like my father." I glance back at AJ. "And though the current plan is for AJ to take over, if he doesn't turn out as an Abnegation-Dauntless split, at least, then he won't take over after me. I suppose I'd have to choose someone, unless you and I had a child that fit."
Tobias frowns. "What in hell do you mean?"
"Your job in the Divergents is determined by how you think," I explain. "I think selflessly, bravely, and intelligently. Well, sort of."
Tobias chews on his lip. "I'm still against it, Tris."
"That doesn't mean I'm not going to do it," I reply.
"I know." He leans over and kisses my cheek. "I love you, my beautiful fiancée."
I frown and take his phone, dialing Caleb's number. "Hey, Caleb. Are you at Dad's?"
"Yeah. Here he is," Caleb replies.
"Hi, Bea."
"Hey, Dad." I keep my eyes on the road, but I know Tobias is watching me.
"How long until AJ is settled in and the season is over?"
"At least a month," I reply.
"Will Four be okay with staying with AJ for a few weeks?" Dad coughs once, and adds, "Or however long it takes."
"He had better be," I say. "Anyway, realistically, how long will I be gone?"
"Two to three weeks," he admits.
"Okay," I answer. "I'll make it work. I love you, Dad."
"Love you, too, Bea."
Tobias reaches over and takes my hand. "Collegiate or Ramaz?"
"Collegiate," I say. "And we have his interview there tomorrow."
"It's one am," Tobias complains. "And I'm sick, remember?"
"Liar." I pat his knee. "I'm going to check your leg after we get AJ in bed, okay?"
"Sounds good."
"Tobias, why don't you ever wear underwear?" I ask, grinning as I unwrap the bandages.
He shrugs. "I was lazy?"
I pull his face down to mine for a quick kiss. "What if AJ were to pants you in public?"
"That would be really embarrassing," he admits.
I peer at his stitches. "They look great," I tell him. "Did you take your antibiotics this morning?"
Tobias raises an eyebrow. "Of course."
I pull his shirt off, too. "Get in bed, babe."
Tobias pulls a clean pair of boxers out of the drawer and falls into our bed. I chuckle and brush my teeth before joining him.
"Fuck," I hear. I sit up slowly, rubbing my eyes. "Oh. Sorry, Tris. You can go back to sleep." He kisses my head. "It's eight. We don't need to leave yet."
I yawn and hug him. "Is AJ up?"
"Yes," he replies. "But seriously, you're tired. Get some sleep."
I give him a look. "What…? Are you planning something?"
Tobias sits on the bed and kisses me. "No, I just want you to be well-rested for today. Sleep until eight thirty and then I'll come wake you up and we can shower.
I turn over and close my eyes again. "Okay."
He runs a hand gently across my body before standing again and leaving the room. "I love you," he mutters.
I mumble something back and then fall back asleep.
I wake the the feel of being undressed. I jump and lash out at my "attacker", who turns out to be Tobias. "What the - sorry," I mumble, kissing his cheek and rubbing a hand over where I punched him.
"Ouch," he grumbles.
"You scared me," I explain, smiling sheepishly. I pull his shirt off, and he goes for my shorts.
"So you punched me?" He takes my bra off next.
"Well, I - it was self-defense," I argue feebly, pulling his boxers off.
We step into the shower. He smiles and leans in, tilting his head to the left like he knows I like. I tilt mine to the left, too. His lips brush against mine, and he grins, pulling me closer to him.
"Nothing dirty," I murmur. "AJ is awake."
"He's with Susan," Tobias replies, kissing along my neck now. "She came over about ten minutes ago. Her interview is right after ours."
I hold his head in my hands and begin to kiss along his neck. "Well okay then," I reply.
He grins and pushes me up against the wall. My hand between us stops him as I flip up around, grinning back.
Tobias runs a hand through his hair one last time in his suit and tie. I shake my head and take a comb out of the drawer. "Kneel," I order.
"Tris -"
"Kneel." He obeys, and I part his hair, combing it neatly.
He wrinkles his nose. "It looks so…boring."
"It looks professional," I correct. "Unless you'd rather me buzz it?"
He runs a hand through his hair again. "Maybe later."
I sigh and run a hand through his hair, too, fixing it a little. "You can get up now," I say softly, kissing his cheek.
Tobias grabs his crutches and we usher AJ to the car. "Buckle yourself up, bud," I order, hopping in the driver's seat.
"You ready, little man?" Tobias asks, turning around in his seat to look at AJ.
"I guess," AJ replies.
"Then let's do this," Tobias says.
Okay, so I'm sure you guys have noticed the Spanish. It will continue, so I'm going to write translations at the bottom. This chapter doesn't have much, but future chapters will have more.
