I don't own Divergent.
Hey, guys! This might be a bit of a ranting, rambling A/N, but please, please read it.
1) I thought I made it clear in my A/N about homophobia and transphobia: I won't put up with it. I don't care if you were suckled homophobically and transphobically at your mother's breast - if you don't like queer fanfiction, don't read this. I'm sorry you're scared that you might be gay. I'm tired of getting bashed for letting my characters be themselves. There's nothing graphic in MMLM.
2) I'm going to do one last installment. You'll see what it's like. Then I'm going to update Thank You.
3) Have a good day and enjoy :).
Rosa smiles at the infant in my arms. "They're beautiful," she informs me. "Hi, Kenai," she says softly. "Welcome to the family."
"Hey!" Tobias says. "So I have a game in Seattle the weekend after next, and Tris and I wanted to bring the family up so we can, you know, see you guys. We're going to get a hotel room this time, though, because our family is just getting too big to stay with you guys."
I can't hear the response, but Tobias' mouth tightens, as does his grip on my hand.
"No," he says, "we will not be bringing our baby girl with us. We don't have a baby girl, nor do we have a baby boy. We just have a tiny human, whose name is Bennett Kenai."
I swallow and put a hand on his hip. "It's okay, baby," I murmur. "They just want to know."
He listens to what they're saying for a second, and then replies, "Kenai is too young to have gender stereotypes pushed on them without them having made the choice of which gender feels more correct. If and when Kenai tells us what gender they associate with, we will tell anyone Kenai wants us to tell. They are only a month old, James." He sighs and listens for a second. "We'll see you soon. Bye."
Tobias groans and flops over on top of me. "I hate this."
"I'm sorry. I really think it will be better for Kenai," I say, giving him a reproachful look.
"I agree. I think it's good that we're doing it. I just hate explaining it to every. single. person." He sighs and kisses my cheek. "I love you." He kisses my cheek. "And I love BK, and JD, and AJ, and Rosa, and Javi."
"Mommy?" AJ says, coming into our room. His cheeks are streaked with tears. "Mommy, I -" He hiccups, and I pull him into the bed with us.
"What's wrong, baby?" I ask, kissing his forehead. He's now twelve. "Are you okay?"
He buries his head in my stomach. "They found out, Mom," he says, shoulder shaking.
"Who? About what?"
Tobias puts a hand on AJ's shoulder. "What happened, AJ?"
"I told Max I like boys," AJ says. "And he told the entire grade." He begins to sob again. "Today no one talked to me all day."
"Why didn't you tell me sooner, AJ?"
"Because I don't want you to do anything," he replies. "I'll handle it."
I let air hiss between my teeth. "I don't think that's a good idea."
"Mom, if you and Dad get involved…it will be bad." He looks up at me, tears still in blue-grey eyes, and says, "Please, Mommy."
I meet Tobias' eyes. "We won't get involved in it through the school," I say. "But we're going to do a lot of talking with you and with Tristan, and we're going to help with with a few things."
I lie awake after Tobias has fallen asleep. I've been noticing things with Kenai. They don't…jump at loud noises. They don't respond right away unless they can see whoever is near them.
I think BK might have EVAS.
I know it sometimes doesn't appear until after the inner ears are done with development - about age three - but if we're already noticing hearing loss now…
Tobias turns over and sits up on his elbows. "What are you thinking about?" he asks, tracing my jaw.
I stare at him for a second. "I have something to tell you," I finally say. "The year we met, a doctor told me you have a hearing disorder called Enlarged Vestibular Aqueduct Syndrome."
"Okay," Tobias says. "I think I can hear pretty well."
"Yes, well, in you, it's a very minor hearing loss. It probably didn't even take effect until you were in high school. I don't know. But my point is…" I sigh and close my eyes. "EVAS normally shows up in one of three ways: due to head trauma, during adolescence, or…during and after development of the inner ear, from ages zero to three." I cuddle closer to him. "I think Kenai might…might have it, Tobias. They're already showing telltale signs -"
"Like what?"
"Like not responding to loud noises, and only recognizing someone when they can see the person." I put my face in his neck and inhale deeply. "The doctor warned me that any kids we have are at risk, because you have it…but then nothing was wrong with JD, so I didn't think -"
"You didn't think anything would be wrong with BK," Tobias finishes. "So…they might have this, because of me."
"It would have had to be in my genes, too, and it's also completely random," I say. "The chances -"
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Would you have wanted to do anything else about it?" I ask. "We have no control. And we don't even know if it is EVAS. There are tons of hearing disorders."
"But the baby was at high risk for this one," Tobias says. He sighs heavily. "What are we going to do about it?"
"I made an appointment for after we get back from Seattle," I mumble. "I'm sorry, Tobias."
He wraps his arms around me. "I'm not mad. You were just trying to protect me." He kisses my head. "Now go to sleep, love."
Tobias smiles at breakfast and hands AJ a package. The other kids at the table watch curiously, and I hold BK on one shoulder.
AJ slowly unwraps the plastic and pulls out the tie. Frowning, he looks up at me. "I don't understand."
Tobias takes the tie from him and ties it around AJ's collar. "It's a pride tie, Andrew Jeremiah," he says, and then he hugs AJ tightly.
AJ smiles widely at me. "Thanks, Mom."
Javi pulls me into the kitchen by an arm. "Tris, what's that about?"
I smile at him. "It's nothing you need to worry about, Javi."
He glares at the ground. "Yes, it is! He's my brother. I want to protect him."
I hug my newly-adopted son. "Thank you so much for caring about AJ like that, Javier, but I -"
"Tris," he says, voice pained. "What's going on with AJ?"
I sigh. "Kids in his grade found out that he's gay." I shift BK to the other shoulder.
Javi lets air his through his teeth. "That's - what happened?"
"They've been ignoring him," I reply.
Javi hums. "It will get better. Don't go to the principal." He walks towards the door. "I have school."
I stare after him. He's taught me more in the months I've known him than most people I know.
Tobias wraps his arms around me and presses his lips to my cheek. "Ready to go to Seattle to see them?"
I nod and fit my lips to his. "I love you," I murmur.
He groans. "I hate having to wait two more weeks," he complains, kissing my head.
"For what?"
"To have sex," he replies, pouting.
I laugh and kiss his cheek. "Want to take a bath?"
He nods and then the smile drops from his face. "One of us has to stay out for the baby," he says. Then he kisses my head. "Go bathe and nap. I can watch them."
"Oh, c'mon. BK is asleep. We have a bit," I reply. "Please?"
"Fine, but I might be getting the baby whilst not wearing clothing," he reminds me, following me up the stairs.
"So? They can come in the bath with us, then." I turn the hot water on. "Are you playing today?"
He nods. "Catching, I think. But I don't have to be there until later." He kisses my head. "No BP for today." He hums as he drops his basketball shorts. "How much longer are the kids in school for?"
"AJ gets out next week," I reply, "and Javi and Rosa don't get out for another two weeks after that. JD has half-day preschool for another week." I cock my head. "I think Rob is coming over today to watch JD and Kenai so I can go to the game with you, and then tomorrow I have Mirin and our kids so he can go to the game."
Tobias gets in the bath and pulls me in with him. "Are you picking up a shift today?"
I nod and lay back against his shoulder, relishing in the feeling of our bare skin touching with the hot water surrounding us. "We're not having any more kids," I murmur. "Five is enough."
He chuckles. "Okay, love." Then he kisses my shoulder. "I would have been happy with just AJ," he says, "but I absolutely love our big, happy family."
Javi sticks close to my side as we drive up to Robyn's house. "So…they're not liking the idea of your gender-neutral baby."
"Nope." I glance back at said child, who's asleep in their carseat. "It's for the best. That's all we want for our kids." I look at Javi. "I wish we could have done it for you."
He smiles at me. "Thanks." Then he puts on a serious face. "I'm going to do whatever it takes to help protect BK."
I laugh lightly. "Okay, bud." I take Tobias' hand. "Are you almost ready, baby?" I ask.
He shrugs. "Everything will be fine."
"Mom," AJ says. "Mom!"
"What?" I say, glancing to the far back, where Rosa, JD, and AJ are seated.
"I don't want to."
"You don't want to…what?" I ask.
"See them. They don't like people like me," AJ says. "Tengo miedo, Mamá."
Tobias' hands tighten on the wheel. "AJ, everything will be fine. They love you."
"AJ, who told you they don't like queers?" I demand. "Y...no tienes que tener miedo, chiquito."
"The kids talk about it all the time." He shrugs. "Can I stay close to you, Mom?"
"If you want to, bud."
James gives Tobias a tight smile. "Hey, man."
"Hey," Tobias replies, shaking his hand.
"How's - everything?"
Tobias smiles widely. "Great. I'm loving the five-kid life. Tris is going to be a doctor, my baseball is great, and I love our newest kid." He kisses my cheek.
"So…can we see him?"
"JD?" Tobias asks pointedly. "Of course."
"Her?"
"Rosa?" Tobias offers.
"The baby!" James snaps. "We want to see the baby." The rest of the family has gathered.
I unhook the carseat from the base and hand it to Tobias. He shows them BK, smiling the entire time.
BK is dressed in blue leggings and an orange shirt. They're still asleep in the carseat. The kids coo over them, and they don't wake up. The dog barks, and, while JD jumps, BK sleeps through it.
I sigh and exchange a look with Tobias. He nods back and then smiles at Andreas. "Thanks for having us for dinner, Andreas and Robyn. It's good to see you, Sierra, James."
Andreas nods to his cousin. "It's no problem, Tobias. You're family."
The tension in every adult is tangible. Noah looks around and tugs his left sleeve down. I see a rainbow poking out onto his hand and I realize why he was so jumpy at Christmas.
"Why don't we head inside to eat?" Robyn suggests. "Kids eat outside," she informs the group. "Adults can stay inside."
AJ gives me a pleading look. I nod my head towards Tobias. He runs up to his father and whispers in his ear. Tobias shakes his head and AJ sighs.
"I am most definitely staying near you," Javi murmurs.
"It's not that we don't approve of your choices," James says. "We just don't think they're right with God."
"Letting my child not be pushed into a box is 'not right with God?'" Tobias asks.
"Letting them choose a gender is not right with God," he says. "And your other boy…the gay one. And the bisexual girl. And Javi."
"I don't even know how to reply to this," I say. "We're not letting Kenai 'choose.' We're letting them identify, without feeling pressured. And how do we have anything to do with AJ's sexuality? Or Rosa's? And Javi is straight."
"Javi is a girl," Andreas says. "And you're allowing your children to sin against God."
Javi stands up and looks Andreas straight in the eye. "I am not a girl," he says. "I'm a fucking guy. I was born into the wrong body and, regardless, gender, sex, and sexuality are three very different and separate things. Tris and Tobias have done nothing wrong. They're raising BK, JD, AJ, Rosa, and me in the best way they can - by supporting us and not being closed-minded and homophobic. Do you know why Rosa and I were in the foster care system?" He takes a shaky breath. "It's because our birth parents hated our 'sin' so much that they gave up their parental rights. It's people like you that are sinning. God makes each and every person as they should be and if that means He gave me this test of being put in the wrong body, then so be it. I can withstand the test and still believe in Him." He glances at me. "If you want to be homophobic and transphobic, go ahead. But do it silently and never attack Tris and Tobias like that again." His voice gets so threatening there that even Robyn leans back a little.
Noah stares at Javi for a second before clearing his throat. "Mom, Dad," he says. "I - I'm pansexual, and I'm dating a man named Sebastian. I've been dating him since the middle of freshman year."
Now everyone at the table turns and stares at Noah, but I give him a broad smile.
He gives me a small smile. "You knew, didn't you?"
I nod. "I did."
"Noah -" James says, voice breaking. "Are you - how - I don't understand."
"Pansexual means I like all genders and sexes," Noah says. "But, currently, the only person I like is Seb."
Javi grins at Noah. "You're brave, Noah," he says. "I commend you."
Noah shrugs. "I don't think my parents plan on kicking me out."
"But - why would you choose this for yourself?" Sierra asks. "We thought we raised you right."
"I didn't choose anything," Noah says. "This is a part of me, not a choice."
"Bullshit," Kiara says. "Bullshit. Excuse my language, but you chose this, Noah. You chose to date a fag and you chose to be one, and, on top of that, you chose to lie to all of us."
Claire shakes her head at her cousin, too. "How could you do this to us, Noah?"
"Maybe it's better you do leave, at least for a while, Noah," James says, finally looking at his son. "Just until everything settles down."
"You're fucking kicking me out?" Noah says, staring at his parents. "I'm your son!"
"My son doesn't do things like this," Sierra finally says. "If you see him, tell him his mother misses him and loves him."
Noah stares at his family for a second and then gets up. "I'm going to go pack," he says.
"Wait -" Sierra starts. When he looks back, she says. "We really do love you, Noah. This is for the best. You'll see. This separation will help you understand everything better."
Noah shakes his head. "I can't believe this," he says. "I can't believe you guys. I'm your son." But he leaves Robyn's house.
Tobias stands, too. "The Sierra I knew would never kick her son out," he says. "Noah has done nothing wrong. Maybe it's better we leave, too." He looks at me. "Go talk to Noah," he orders softly. "Tell him there's always room for him with us, if he needs it."
I take BK out of their carseat and put them over my shoulder as I walk over to Sierra's house. I walk up to Noah's room, knocking on the door.
"Who is it?"
"Tris and Kenai," I reply. "Can I come in, bud?"
"Yeah," he says. I open the door and he wipes at his face. "What's up?"
"Do you need any help?" I ask. "Also…if you want to come to New York for the rest of the summer…Tobias and I always have room for family." I hand him some boxers out of his top drawer. "We'll get you a ticket back with us and you can stay in the hotel with us until then."
He wipes his face again and sits back against the bed. "I still just - can't believe it."
"At least you're of age," I say. "Javi and Rosa…"
"I know," he says. "Sebastian lives in New Jersey. I'm going to call and tell him what happened." He leans his head back. "I think I might have to live with you." He snaps his head up. "Not that it's bad - thank you so much - I'll pay rent and everything."
I smile at him. "It's okay," I say. "I know what you mean. And for now, I'll pack for you and you can call your boyfriend. Go on." I set BK on the bed, and they coo at the ceiling while I pack. Every few minutes, I tickle them slightly and let them feel an interesting object.
Noah comes back in a few minutes later, and he's washed his face. "I talked to him," he says. "He says I can stay with him sometimes, if I need to, and he'll come down to see me."
"That's good, bud. Do you have boxes you can pack some of this stuff into to ship it, or would you rather leave it here?"
He pauses. "Is it realistic that this will ever be my home again?" he asks.
I hesitate. "I don't know."
Tobias comes in. "Tris, everyone is mostly ready to go," he says. "Javi's entertaining them in the car."
Noah looks at Tobias. "Should I pack up everything?" he asks. "Boxes?"
"I'll help. Tris, why don't you drive everyone to the hotel and then come back here to pick us up?"
"Mom, I don't want to share with BK, too," AJ whines. "I already share a room with JD."
"Why would you share a room with BK?" I ask. "And JD and BK are going to share once we get BK on a good sleep schedule."
"Because Noah's going to live with us," AJ says, taking BK from me with expert hands.
I chuckle. "Noah's going to be in the attic," I reply. "Nowhere near you."
AJ steps back. "Okay then. I'm fine with it." He grabs a suitcase in his free hand and continues to cradle BK in the other arm. "Love you," he adds, scurrying away.
Noah looks up at our house. "Thanks," is all he says before disappearing into it.
Tobias hands me a suitcase. "Noah's other stuff should arrive here in a week or so," he says.
A car pulls up across the street from our house and a man with dark hair tumbles out of it, barely having parked and locked it. Tobias and I watch for a moment.
"Sebastian?" I mutter to Tobias.
He shrugs. "Maybe."
The man, who I now see has the dark eyes to match his dark hair, begins to look at the house numbers. He sees us and calls, "Are you Four and Tris?"
Tobias nods. "Noah is inside," he calls back.
Sebastian runs across the street, dodging a car. "Thank God," he says. "I'm Sebastian. You two are - amazing."
I smile at him. "Nice to meet you. I'm Tris."
"And I'm Four," Tobias says. "If you want, you can help us all by helping us unload."
"Of course, sir," Sebastian says, and grabs two suitcases, running up the steps.
I laugh and follow him. Tobias grabs the last suitcase and locks the car.
Noah and Sebastian are embracing in the hallway, the suitcases forgotten at Sebastian's feet. Noah has his face buried in Sebastian's neck and they cling to each other. AJ watches from a seat on the stairs.
"AJ, c'mere," I order, and my son hops down the stairs. "Stop watching and bring these suitcases upstairs."
He huffs but obeys, casting one glance back. I put a hand on Noah's back, and he jumps back, face reddening slightly. "Sorry," he mutters.
"No, Noah, it's entirely fine," I say, laughing. "I don't care if you and Sebastian show affection." I meet Tobias' eyes and he mimes sex and then gestures to them. I laugh for a second and then say, "We also don't care if you two have sex. Our only rules are: nowhere but your room or bathroom, not when my kids are around, and with full protection." Both men have gone pure red. "And keep anything around my kids PG, please."
Noah is now just staring at me, so Sebastian says, "Okay, I, uh, thanks?"
I laugh and walk by them. "See you at dinner, boys."
Tobias kisses my head. "When's the appointment for BK?" he asks, handing me the baby. "Also, I think they need a nursing."
"The appointment is tomorrow at eight AM," I reply. "I'm going to go nurse. Make sure everyone gets unpacked and then start dinner." I start to leave and then turn around. "Also, I need you to take AJ to the Center for his appointment tomorrow."
"But I have BP," he argues.
"I can't take him," I reply. "My shift at the hospital starts at twelve."
Tobias sighs. "Can't Noah or Javi?"
"You can ask them," I reply. I hug him. "Sorry." I turn and take BK into the bedroom that Tobias and I share.
"Tris, Four, what brings you and BK here today?" Dr. Bowen asks, tapping her pen on the clipboard. "BK had a checkup recently, didn't they?"
"We're not here for a checkup," I say. "BK…well, Four has a hearing disorder called EVAS."
"Has BK been showing signs of hearing loss?" she asks.
I nod. "They don't respond to loud noises, and I tried the clap test, and…I think - well, I don't know."
"Hmm." She taps her chin. "I'd like to see their response to the clap test. Four, if you will, hold BK to be facing you."
Tobias moves the baby to face him and then looks up at the doctor. She claps, loudly, from directly behind. BK doesn't change their behavior, still playing with a button on Tobias' shirt.
She next claps near their right ear, with the same response. When she claps near their left ear, BK pauses for a second, glances around, and then goes back to playing.
Dr. Bowen hums. "I think BK has hearing loss," she says slowly. "Given the circumstances, EVAS would make sense." She pulls out a sticky note. "I'm putting the name and number of an pediatric ENT doctor here. I would recommend going to see him for a full diagnosis." She gives me a sympathetic look. "Children that show hearing loss this early usually have speech issues, if they learn to speak at all. I would recommend everyone in the family learning ASL so you can start teaching it as soon as possible."
I nod and shake her hand. "Thank you." Then I pick BK up and walk out of the room.
Tobias drives on the way home. It's pretty quiet in the car. "So," he says. "BK might not talk."
"That would be okay," I reply. "We can learn ASL." I pull my phone out. "I'm going to call that doctor."
"Don't do it now," Tobias says. "I don't want to be there."
I put my phone back in my pocket. "Okay."
"Where'd you go?" AJ asks.
"Kenai had a doctor appointment," Tobias replies, slamming the door and walking up the stairs without another word.
"For what?"
"They have a hearing disorder," I explain. "They have significant hearing loss."
AJ's face falls. "What…what can we do for them?"
I shrugs. "I don't know, AJ."
"How can you not know?" he says. "This is your baby, Mom. What would you have done if it was me?"
I turn sharply and look him sternly in the eye. "AJ, I'm a doctor. We learned about this syndrome. It's understudied and no one understands it. If that's what Kenai has, there's little to nothing we can do. Hearing aids are useless more than half the time. Cochlear implants are futile. There's nothing we could do."
AJ swallows. "Sorry, Mom."
"No, I'm sorry I yelled at you." I sigh. "Can you take BK for now? I need to get ready for my shift."
"I thought you were taking me to the Center for my appointment," he says.
I sigh. "I'm really sorry, AJ, but I think Noah is."
"But I've never gone without you or Dad," he says, gripping my wrist.
"AJ, Noah is even better than your dad or me," I say. "He's dating a man."
AJ looks down. "It's just -"
"I'm sorry, buddy," I say, kissing his head. "But I can't skip work and Dad has practice. We'll take you next week."
"It's fine." He takes the baby from me. "Go, get ready for work."
"I really am sorry, bud." I stroke his cheek. "But it will be fine."
He nods. "I'm okay, Mom." He kisses my cheek.
Javi hugs me. "I'm sorry about the hearing loss," he says.
"It'll be fine," I answer. "We can deal with whatever curve balls are thrown our way."
"I know you can, Tris," he says. "But AJ is right - you need to go get ready for work."
"Okay, so the Center is the the resource center for LGBTQIAPP+ people in New York," I explain to Noah. "AJ has a therapy appointment there, at the youth center, which is next to the main building. It'll be about an hour long. You and Sebastian are free to do whatever during the appointment as long as you're there to pick him up. If I were you, I'd check out the regular Center. It has a museum and a bookstore and it's generally pretty cool."
Noah nods as I grab my bag. "When should we leave if we're driving?"
"In about an hour," I reply. "Thanks, Noah!"
"Tris!" Someone hugs me.
"Hey," I say, smiling. "How were those last two weeks?"
Leah laughs, nose stud glinting. "Hot," she admits. "How's the baby?"
"They're great," I reply. "Four loves being a dad - obviously - and we have his nephew staying with us for a little while. How's Lio?"
She grins and twists a ring. "July fourth," she says, looking down and smiling to herself.
I hug her. "I'm so happy for you."
"Students!" Dr. Wilcox roars. Every sound stops. "Good. I have the lists for your rotations. After this, get changed and be there promptly. I'm going to read each rotation group."
Leah and I are in pediatrics. "Kids are so cute," she gushes.
I shake my head. "I don't like pediatrics. Too many sick and injured kids."
Leah considers and rubs the inside of her arm. "That's fair."
Most of the day is spent treating puking kids, putting in stitches, putting on casts, returning dislocated bones to the proper places, and generally calming the children. It's honestly exhausting. My shift goes until midnight and I know the house will be silent when I get back. Tobias might wait up, but we'll both be exhausted. I hope he just goes to bed. I check my watch. It's nearly dinnertime now.
I grab the newest chart and walk towards the room. It briefly outline what happened. Boy, playing in the park, fell off swingset, possible broken arm. I look up once I'm in the room and recognize my son, along with my husband.
I rub my temples and pull Tobias into a hug. "What happened?" I ask, kissing JD's head.
Tobias is still in his uniform. I guess he came from pregame practice. "Javi said he and Rosa took AJ, JD, and BK to the park after Noah and Sebastian got back with AJ. Apparently JD was trying to get off of the swing faster and flew off, trying to catch himself with his arms and - I guess he broke something or something. They called me and I left practice."
JD begins to cry. "Mommy, it hurts." He holds up a purpling left arm. "¡Mamá, me ayuda!"
I kiss Tobias' cheek. "I can't treat him," I reply. "I'm going to go get Leah and an attending."
"No!" JD says. "¡Mamá, te necesito!"
I sigh. "I'll be right back, baby. I'm just getting a different doctor."
I find Leah and pull her towards the attending. "Dr. Matthews?"
"Yes?"
"Leah has a patient she needs your help with," I say.
"Why are you talking to me about Leah's patient?"
I sigh. "He's my son. It was my patient but I can't treat him."
Dr. Matthews looks up. "What's wrong with him?"
"He fell off a swingset, and it looks like he fractured his radius or ulna."
Dr. Matthews shuts the binder. "Take us to him. Is his father here, too?"
"Yes, but I might need to translate for him," I say. "He's slipped into speaking mostly Spanish." I start walking.
"And you want to be there for the treatment of your son," Dr. Matthews adds.
"Yes," I admit.
Dr. Matthews nods. "You're going to need to remember that you're not the doctor on this one."
"I know."
Tobias has a screaming JD on his lap, and he gives me a thankful look.
To their eternal credit, both Leah and Dr. Matthews react well to Tobias and my screaming son. Tobias hands him to me, and I calm him from full-out screaming to just a little crying. Dr. Matthews smile at him. "Hi, JD. I'm Dr. Matthews."
He just buries his head in my shoulder.
"I can help you feel better. Can you tell me what happened?"
"Me caí." He sniffs. "Me duele el brazo."
"He said he fell, and that his arm hurts," I say. "Habla en inglés, por favor," I whisper.
He sniffs and begins to cry again.
"Ready the ketamine and propofol mixture," Dr. Matthews mutters to Leah. "I'm going to go do x-rays. Eaton, can you bring your son with me?"
I cradle him against my chest and follow my attending. The x-rays are quickly taken and Leah administers the drugs to help him feel better. I lay him back on the bed as they take effect.
Tobias pats the chair next to him. "Did you see the x-ray?" he mutters.
I nod. "Fracture of the left ulna," I reply. I take his arm and show him where. "Because the bone isn't displaced, they don't need to set it. They just need to put a cast on."
Beside us, JD is asleep. Leah and Dr. Matthews come in with the cast supplies. "What color, Tris?" Leah asks.
I grin at her. "How about green?" I say.
"Sure thing." She readies it and helps Dr. Matthews with the plaster.
Once they're done setting it, Dr. Matthews releases Leah to go work with other patients. "I'm going to talk to Mr. Eaton, Tris, but you're free to go work." The order is implied.
I kiss Tobias' head. "Take videos of JD when he wakes up," I say. "You won't regret it."
"Thanks for waiting up," I say, crawling into bed next to him.
"I'd hardly call it waiting up," he mumbles. "I've been dozing."
"It's fine," I say. "How was JD?"
"He complained a little once the medication wore off, but he was okay after I gave him a little Tylenol," Tobias answers. "He likes the color, by the way. He kept murmuring 'verde' under his breath and looking at his cast on the way back."
I chuckle and wriggle out of the jeans I wore to work, even though I change into scrubs before actually working. "Did you go to the game?"
Tobias' hands find my waist and he pulls me close, even though the comforter separates us. "No," he admits. "I called and talked to Max."
I pull off my shirt and hold out my hand expectantly. One of Tobias' shirts soon rests in it and I pull it on before getting under the light covers with him. "It's alright. You weren't supposed to start as a pitcher, anyway, right?"
He shakes his head. "Nope. Not even as a catcher. Zeke pitched and Uriah caught."
I lay my head on his shoulder and take his hand. "BK went down easily?" I ask, settling into the bed and my normal routine.
He kisses my head. "Like an angel."
"AJ helped with the dishes?"
"He did."
"And Rosa and Javi are okay?"
"They're wonderful," he replies, kissing my nose. "Good night, my love."
