A/N: Written for the Freeverse Frenzie Competition, poem 78. He might've snuck into the 100 poems, but I forgot all about the poor guy. :D

Character Poems: the Chosen through Time
16. Shioda Hirokazu

Maybe the metaphor of a tin can
had been too dulled.

All shines of brilliance aside
he was the knight on the left flank –
out back,
saving a little girl from harm
while the front
was covered with grime and rust
and water that slowed them down

But he, they, clanked on anyway:
that awkward pause,
that befuddled look
that followed them…

So he wasn't a fighter on the front lines
but there's no such things as "lines"
if there's only one.
