Ginny stroked Tonks' owl absentmindedly as she read the letter he had just delivered. The owl chirped and Ginny looked up and hastily gave it a few crumbs of her toast. "Shush up you silly owl." She said affectionately. She glanced up and down the table, Dean was nowhere to be seen, and they'd stopped coming down to breakfast together a while ago. Things were really rough and Ginny knew that Tonks was right, she needed to end it but she didn't know how, she was just so fed up of the fighting.
All day, Ginny wondered how she could break up with Dean and as a result was very irritable and she knew Dean could sense something what was up. "What is wrong?" He demanded as they walked back from dinner that evening.
"Nothing," She snapped folding her arms across her chest. "You always ask me that you know? Maybe I'm just stressed."
"I just," Dean snapped back. "Fine I won't bother asking next time." He sighed.
"Good. Don't." Ginny tutted and as they reached the Gryffindor Tower Dean said "Tapeworm," to the Fat Lady who swung forward to allow them into the Common Room. Then as Ginny stepped forward to climb through the portrait hole she felt something nudge her and turned glaring at Dean "Don't push me, please, Dean," She said sounding annoyed. "You're always doing that; I can get through perfectly well on my own…"
The brief but fierce argument that followed ended their once happy relationship and admittedly Ginny was relieved.
"Hey Luna," Ginny took a seat opposite her as she spoke. The library was quiet and peaceful and anywhere was better than the Common Room, where Dean and Seamus would sit looking at her and muttering to each other.
"I heard you broke up with your boyfriend." Luna said quietly not looking up from the parchment she was directing her wand at, creating swirls to appear on the parchment.
"Erm, yeah." Ginny coughed not wanting to discuss it.
"Sorry." Luna said abruptly; looking up from what she was doing. "You didn't want to talk about it. I won't ask again."
"No its ok-," Ginny said awkwardly, feeling guilty for cutting her off so quickly when she was obviously trying to be nice. She opened her Transfiguration textbook and began to work. "It's just still fresh you know?" Ginny said nervously glancing at her friend who seemed to be immersed once again on making swirling patterns on her parchment. Luna nodded briefly still without looking up. "Yes," she said quietly.
Ginny laughed quietly to herself and began her homework with a soft smile, wondering how she'd felt so jealous at Christmas when she'd heard that Luna was going to Slughorn's party with Harry, even though it was 'as friends'. Now Ginny thought reasonably, she knew Luna wouldn't hurt her by going out with the boy she knew Ginny had fancied. Besides Luna wouldn't want a boyfriend, Ginny thought, they're too main stream.
Now single once more, Ginny was already receiving a lot of attention from boys and found it infuriating instead of flattering all she wanted was for Harry to finally notice her…
