86. You Never Even Said

You said you'd be back;
you certainly didn't say you were going
out there to die.

You didn't say I'd see you next
wrapped up, covered,
buried in the ground.

You didn't say I'd have to say goodbye
at your funeral
instead of kissing you out the door.

You didn't say you'd leave me with this hole
in my stomach, or this extra weight
in front of my stomach…

I didn't even get to say it
to you: that I wanted to stay with you
forever, or that our unofficial family
would be growing one more in number…

I didn't even get to answer your question
because you'd said you'd hear it when you got back.

My answer had been "yes"; it always was
but you're not here to hear it; you're gone

And the only time you'll get to see your little child
is at your funeral.
