88. Another Girl
He pretend to be in love
with other girls:
he played with them,
put on a terrific show
And they brought it,
smiling with him,
teasing the little harem
he'd wrapped around himself
And he tried to buy it too,
tried to tell himself it was all true:
that he wasn't in love with the one
girl who was off limits to him
But they were empty lies:
lies with no conviction in them –
he loved her, even though she was taken,
even though the man who took her
was someone he couldn't betray
He couldn't help but love her
and he couldn't tell:
because that was his best friend
he'd hurt.
He shouldn't love her;
he'd known all along
But he loved her,
and all he could do
was cling to them:
those empty lies.
