96. Lopsided
His feelings for her came and went like a snowflake melting on his fingertips –
No, that was too soft, too gentle for her image.
It was like a speck of hail shrivelling
from the heat of a gloved, impartial hand:
that same cold hand which would later come up
to brush a lock of hair.
Her feelings lasted longer than that, but that storm of hail
was all they truly shared together; the rest was an illusion
they danced within: the world believed
but they were less ignorant, they just went through the motions
of pretend
Until the war was through, and their lifelines cast adrift
into the melted hail, and they were through as well.
Respect for that moment they shared remained,
but it was long since time to move on.
