She had this little death sentence in her mind:
a count-down, from one to twenty eight
and twenty eight was bam, the end of her
until the count started
all over again, from two

Because one and twenty eight were lost
to that cruel cruel moon that burnt holes
in her skull, left little spaces behind.

He tried to fill them up, when she returned,
tried to shine instead of burn, and he did:
oh, how he shined for her
so her once a month execution
could last a little less

But he couldn't shine brightly enough
to outshine the moon.
