Caroline was dreaming when a knock on the door suddenly woke her up. Confused, she sat up in her bed not knowing where she was for a second. She had been running through the Mystic Falls wood from someone who wanted to kill her. She had had no idea who and her legs had been like jelly. But just before the knock had woken her, she had faced whoever she was running from: herself.
There was another knock on the day and Caroline sighed as she slowly removed the covers.
"Buenos días, señorita. I have breakfast." Marisol said from the other side of the door.
Breakfast? I haven't ordered breakfast. Maybe Klaus did…
Caroline fell back on the bed as the thought of Klaus hit her. Last night they had… And it had been very close that they had… She had been drunk, confused and, she realised, a little lonely. This wasn't supposed to happen, though. As right as it had felt the night before as wrong did it feel now. He was Klaus for God's sake!
Another insistent knock came from the door and Caroline got up once again. Suddenly she could smell it and in a flash she opened the door to see Marisol stand in the hallway. The woman was bleeding from her wrist but a nice smile was on her face.
The anger Caroline felt made her blush and without thinking of how awkward it would be talking to Klaus again or that she was only wearing a t-shirt, hotpants and no bra, she dragged Marisol to the other side of the hall and hammered on Klaus' door.
When Klaus opened the door he was only wearing his jeans and his dark blonde curls were wet from the shower. Caroline was glad that she was already blushing, when she for a short moment thought about that that was how she had seen him last. He was sending her his most charming smile but Caroline just pushed him aside and entered his room.
"Seriously?!" she almost yelled as she showed him Marisol's wrist. His smile faded a bit but there was still an amused glimpse in his eyes as he raised his eyebrows in a question. Then he closed the door to the hall after her and took a short moment to consider: shirt or no shirt? When he caught Caroline run her eyes over his upper body, his smile grew wider and he made his decision: no shirt.
"What is wrong, love?" he finally asked as he grabbed a towel and began ruffling his hair with it. Caroline had to focus on her anger and Marisol but the bleeding and his naked upper body was distracting her. She released Marisol from her grip and stepped over to him.
Then she pulled the towel out of his hands and tarred a piece of it off. Klaus was standing very close to her; just looking at her but Caroline didn't look at him. She gave him back the towel and went back to Marisol. As she began tying the strip around the woman's wrist, she talked again.
"What will it take for you to understand that I don't drink from the vein?" she hissed through her teeth. Klaus threw the towel over a chair and stepper closer to her, very slowly.
"What about last night?" he said, still with a smile on his lips. Caroline stared back at him angrily and she saw his smile falter the slightest.
"What I did to that man last night was awful, despicable and something I will hate myself for as long as I live. It was a horrible mistake that I will do anything in my power not to repeat." Caroline told him, her voice almost trembling with guilt and self-loathing.
"I see." he replied, his voice bitter as the thought crossed him that Caroline might feel the same way about their activities that night. Klaus was only standing a couple of feet from her but she didn't move or look at him. "Tell me, love. Why is it that you refuse to drink from the vein? I know that you can control it."
Caroline looked away and realised that they had forgotten all about Marisol. Caroline looked her in the eyes and compelled her to tell others that she had cut herself on the wrist. Then she stepped around Klaus and led Marisol to the door while she spoke.
"I don't need to have a reason and I really don't need you to understand. Damon and Elena do it too…" she had reached the door and opened it for Marisol. When she was about to go after her, Klaus was suddenly in her way and he closed the door after Marisol. Caroline crossed her arms in front of her and looked at him with a defiant look.
"But it is different with you, aren't it love? This is about more than the fear of losing control. You are the strongest new vampire I have ever met. You can be stronger, Caroline." he told her in a low voice and slowly he reached to touch a strand of her hair that was resting against her shoulder. As he twirled it around his finger, Caroline felt like an electric current went through her body and the feeling surprised her so much that she took a step back and away from Klaus, making the smile on his face disappear.
"I don't care." she told him defiantly, gesturing with her hands. Then she turned around and walked away from him, further into the room. For a moment she recalled the last she had turned her back on him and her body tensed as she waited for his reaction.
But he didn't scream at her this time. Instead he flashed in front of her and placed a hand under her chin, making her look at him.
"What happened to you, Caroline?" Klaus asked with a worried voice.
"Nothing happened." she murmured and turned her face away from his hand.
"You are lying, sweetheart."
"Look… it's nothing. It's in the past, forgotten, okay? So just leave it. Besides, I don't see why this is any of your business." she said as she looked him in the eyes. There was no anger, only worry to see in his face and it made Caroline confused. How could he be a monster one moment and so human the next?
"Trust me, love. If anybody hurt you, I'll make it my business. Now tell me." he said with a convincing voice and Caroline could feel the compulsion. Luckily, the vervain she had taken before she had talked to Marcel, hadn't worn off.
"That is real mature. You're going to compel me? I'm on vervain, it's not gonna work." she told him, once again with her arms crossed. A devilish smile spread across his face as he answered.
"I know you're on vervain. I could taste it." he told her in a low voice and moved his face closer to hers, their noses only a few inches apart. He was reminding her of what had happened the night before but Caroline didn't react. "But we'll just wait in two days' time and then it will be out of your system."
"I'll just keep taking more vervain."
"Not if I keep you here. Just you and me, Caroline." he said and the smile hadn't left his lips.
"I thought you said that we don't have the time." Caroline said but immediately regretted it as soon as she saw the look on his face. Until now, Caroline had practically acted like last night didn't happen but now she had confirmed it.
"Then tell me." he said with a serious voice despite of the amused light in his eyes.
"We don't have time for that either! I'll tell you after all of this are done. After Silas is gone. But you can go on any killing rampage after I've told you, okay?" she said, already regretting the promise she had just made. Just the thought of them still talking after all of this sent a weird feeling through her stomach.
"The things I do for you, love. Now, are you sure you don't want anything to drink?" he said with a small smile on his lips. She rolled her eyes but couldn't help but smile a little.
"Not unless you have a blood bag."
"I will see what I can do. B Positive?" he said, surprising Caroline. She just nodded and sent him a thankful smile. For a long moment they just stood there, looking each other in the eyes without moving an inch. Then Caroline sighed and turned around to exit the room.
Klaus didn't move and his eyes were still locked on her, when she turned around in front of the door.
"When are we leaving?" she asked as she slowly turned the doorknob.
"In an hour." He said as Caroline opened the door. As she was about to step out into the hallway, he called after her: "And Caroline, as much as I adore what you are wearing, I recommend long sleeves and pants when going to the cathedral."
Caroline stopped in the doorway, her back to him and looked down herself. She had completely forgotten about how little clothes she was wearing and felt her cheeks blush. With Klaus' chuckle behind her she closed the door and hurried across the hall to her own room.
She threw herself on the bed once again and for some reason she couldn't stop a wide smile from spreading across her lips.
A/N: Hey guys! Sorry for not updating sooner. I have a minor crisis with the story, but I think I've overcome it;) Which means that the next update will come in a couple of days!:)
I had an awesome review of the last chapter that pointed out that Caroline drinking from someone was OOC and I totally agree. I tried to deleting multiple times and rewriting it, but nothing else seemed to work.
The reason why I wrote it like that in the first place was because I pictured Caroline in a very emotional state as she was both lonely, fighting her attraction to Klaus (which in her eyes is wrong) and evidently drunk. Which is why she lost control. I hope you get me reasoning and don't hate me completely for making Caroline do that.
But moving on: I would love to hear your thoughts on this chapter!:D
I hope you had an awesome christmas and new year's eve!
