Caroline woke up after sleeping a couple of hours and looked around her room, confused about where she was. Hadn't she already woken up once already that morning? Then she remembered her trip to the graveyard, her breakdown and her talk with Klaus. Klaus had been here, or was it all just a dream?
When she swung her legs out of the bed, she suddenly noticed that she was dressed and the blanket over her was from the living room, which meant that it wasn't a dream and he had really been there. The thought sent butterflies through her stomach before she could shake it off and quickly decided to take another bath to clear her mind and get the dirt from the graveyard off of her.
As she stood in the shower, she thought about the day before and how she had yelled at her friends. What they had done and said wasn't okay, but perhaps Caroline had overreacted a little. She had had the feeling of being pushed into a corner with no chance of escape and her own feelings had overwhelmed her as she had found herself suddenly protecting the Original family.
Caroline decided to go back to the boarding house to talk to her friends and as soon she was dressed, she grabbed her car keys and drove off. Caroline knocked on the front door, waiting for someone to let her in as she was not sure to what could be going on in there. It was past noon but Caroline was not sure whether the two love birds had even left the bed.
A moment after Damon opened the door, fully dressed, and he shot her a small smile before inviting her in. She entered the living room, where Elena stood, dressed in short running tights and a sports bra. Small wooden stakes were embedded in the walls, a lamp was on the floor broken and they had also managed to destroy one of the coffee tables during their training.
"Hi Care." Elena said with a careful voice, not knowing if her blonde friend was still angry.
"Hey. I see you've been busy." Caroline greeted, almost forcing the cheerful tone.
Damon walked past her and found his alcohol in a vitrine cabinet where it had been placed safely away from their fighting. As he went to pour himself a glass, Caroline and Elena sat down in one of the sofas after walking over the broken table.
"I'll have one too, thank you." Caroline said and received a surprised look from Damon and Elena. The oldest Salvatore then filled another glass and gave it to Caroline before sitting down in the other sofa. It was too early in the day for her to drink but she needed something to calm her down.
All the feelings that had overwhelmed her, a couple of hours earlier, was still there and she found it hard to push them away. Furthermore she kept thinking of the small conversations she had had with Klaus while he had sat beside her on her bed. His presence there was the only reason she had even been able to fall asleep. She had felt safe with the feeling his eyes on her, her hand in his and the small tip of the mattress that told her he was still there.
"Look, Caroline. We're sorry about yesterday. We shouldn't have acted that way. We were just so surprised to see you like that, talking to Elijah. Especially, because we have become so used to being suspicious of anything involving the Originals. It wasn't our intention to interrogate you the way you felt we did. I'm sorry. Can you forgive us?" Elena asked and placed her hand over Caroline's free one.
"Of course I can forgive you! And I know I might overreacted a bit too. I think it was because of Silas. I was still shaken after meeting him. He kissed me! I feel like sanitizing my mouth every other minute. And I should really have explained everything better before I just jumped from one thing to another. So I'm sorry too." Caroline said and the two girls hugged each other for a few seconds.
"Not to be the insensitive jackass but can we move on? What did happen in New Orleans, Caroline?" Damon interrupted with an impatient voice and received a glare from both girls. Then Caroline sighed and took a sip of her drink before she started talking.
"Look, I would tell you everything if I could but I've made some promises that I very much intend to keep and you have to respect that. That also means that you can ask all you want but I can choose not to answer. Understood?" Caroline asked with a firm voice and she felt the corner of her mouth twitch when Damon nodded obediently.
"I guess I'll just start from the beginning."
Caroline then told them about her arrival in New Orleans, her meet with Elijah and Marcel and the agreement she had made with the Original. She skipped the part about Henrik, only telling that Hayley was in New Orleans and that she somehow was under Klaus' protection. When Damon started questioning her, Caroline mostly just blinked and he quickly moved on to something she was willing to answer.
Then she told them about Spain and how they had found Lucy. Once again she skipped something, not mentioning what had happened between Klaus and her with a word. Of course, Damon had to ask and it was clear that both Elena and Damon knew she was lying to them but surprisingly neither of them dug into it further.
She ended her story by telling them about the execution that Marcel had ordered Klaus to do and then what she had heard about Marcel's witch. She also mentioned that Klaus and Rebekah already were in Mystic Falls and that Elijah and Lucy would arrive the next morning.
"You've seen Klaus here?" Elena asked startled, clearly not over her fright for the hybrid now that her feelings had returned.
"I visited my mother's grave this morning and I might have had a minor breakdown. And then he was just there. I was surprised too. But he helped me home. Then he told me that he and Rebekah was in town and left." Caroline said, blushing a little when she heard the softness of her voice.
"That was all?" Damon asked, almost teasingly.
"Yes, Damon. That was all." Caroline retorted. She had no intention of telling them about how Klaus had spent almost an hour in her bedroom, while she was half-asleep.
"The flowers on her grave were beautiful by the way. Thank you." Caroline then added with a much softer voice as she recalled the bouquet of forget-me-nots that lay by the gravestone. Damon simply nodded and then downed the rest of his drink. Caroline had never really learned to understand her mother's relationship with Damon, but she knew that Damon had valued their friendship.
The following silence was interrupted by the front door opening and when the two Original vampires entered, they all stood up. Klaus walked into the living room with Rebekah right behind him and quickly shot Caroline smile, which she returned, a weird feeling running through her, before he averted his attention to Damon and Elena.
"Damon and Elena. What a pleasure to see you again. So this is the brother you ended up choosing? Well, I guess while Stefan is not here, you might as well take advantage of it." Klaus said with a smirk on his lips, ignoring the stare Caroline sent him. Then Rebekah moved around her brother and took a step closer to Damon.
"Missed me?" Rebekah asked and sent Damon a flirting smile while flipping her hair. Damon sent her a disgusted look, which Caroline thought was most for the sake of Elena but Rebekah just smiled and diverted her eyes to Elena.
"And Elena! Still with your emotions on, I see? How boring."
"Easy now, love. If she still had her emotions off, I might have to kill her." Klaus said and sent Elena a smile.
Caroline looked at Klaus with wide eyes and then at Damon, when she felt his dead stare on her. He clearly thought that Caroline had told Klaus about the time Elena had almost succeeded in killing her. She tried to shake her head without anyone else noticing but he clearly didn't believe her.
"But that is not why we are here, is it? We wanted to go over the plan." Klaus continued, still standing while his sister had placed herself in one of the sofas. Damon and Elena did the same thing but Caroline didn't move from her position.
"Shouldn't we wait for Elijah? And we need Tyler with us too. Where is Tyler?" Caroline asked, shifting her eyes between Damon, Elena and Klaus.
"Maybe he is hiding." Rebekah said with a shrug of her shoulders and fought a smile. Caroline glanced at Rebekah for a second before fixating her eyes on Klaus. The smirk on his face made a shiver run through her and before anyone could react, Caroline had Klaus against the wall with a hand around his neck, surprise looking back at her from his blue eyes.
She heard Elena and Damon gasp as they looked at her with shock in their eyes but she was surprised to hear Rebekah only let out a melodramatic sigh. Caroline knew that she would react differently if she knew what was really going on.
"What have you done to Tyler?"
"I haven't done anything, love. I promised you he was free, remember?" Klaus said innocently.
"Quit the act, Silas. I knew it was you from the moment you walked in here. Now, what have you done to Tyler?"
Silas laughed and quickly spun them around so Caroline was against the wall, her hands caught over her head by his one hand around her wrists. "You truly are amazing, Caroline. It's a shame your friends keep underestimating you because I don't think they've seen half of the things you can do."
He reached out his free hand and stroked her cheek gently, making her yank her head away from him.
"Don't touch me!" Caroline yelled and then he was gone, pinned against the floor by Rebekah, who was straddling over him.
"What have you done to my brother?" Rebekah asked with a threatening voice, barring her teeth at him.
"Rebekah Mikaelson, the youngest Original. I don't think we've met." Silas said casually as if the tightening hand around his neck wasn't there. Then he changed right under her and suddenly Stefan was lying on the floor, which startled Rebekah so much that she easily flew off him, when he pushed her away, and across the floor until Damon stopped her from hitting the fireplace.
"I'm Silas." He simply said and was already on his feet, walking towards the front door. "And I believe Caroline know where your brother is. She is after all the one, who helped him escape my mind control the last time."
"He's at your house. He must be. That was where he was when I helped him last." Caroline quickly said as soon as Silas was gone and sped out the boarding house with Rebekah on her heels.
As soon as they reached the Mikaelson mansion, they ran into the room with the fireplace where Caroline had found him the last time.
Klaus was in front of the fireplace on all fours and Caroline immediately saw the piece of wood sticking out from his chest. He cried out loud of pain, when they helped him to his feet and looking at the stake in Klaus' chest, Caroline realised that this time it wasn't Silas playing with their minds. There was an actual white oak stake in the hybrid.
"Okay, what do we do? How do we get it out?" Caroline asked with a frantic voice as she struggled to prevent Klaus from falling to the floor.
"What do you mean? Get what out?" Rebekah said and practically carried her brother to a chair with little effort. Caroline stared at Rebekah for a long moment before looking back at Klaus and the splinters that were coming out through his chest and shirt.
"You can't see it?" Caroline asked with confusion written all over her.
"See what? There is nothing there, Caroline. What is going on?" Rebekah replied, now with an irritated and impatient voice. And then Caroline realised what was happening. This time Silas was not only playing with Klaus thoughts but also with hers, making both of them believe that the stake was actually there, killing him slowly.
"Oh my God… Okay, I know what's happening. Silas has made us believe that he staked Klaus but it's not real because you can't see it." Caroline quickly explained.
"What do we do?"
"Give me a second." Caroline said and focused her mind. She looked down at Klaus' chest and told herself that it wasn't real. It was what Silas wanted her to see. But Caroline wasn't able to convince herself as her eyes crossed Klaus' face every other second and saw the pain that was so obvious that the stake had to be real.
"Okay, I have an idea. It is inside our heads which means that we both need to be distracted from it." Caroline then said, an idea forming inside her head.
"I will be happy to snap your necks." Rebekah said with devious smile on her lips.
"Now is really not the time to be funny, Rebekah."
"But I mean it."
"I think I have a better idea. Do you trust your sister? Do you trust that she can't see what we can?" Caroline asked Klaus, who hadn't said a word since they had come.
Klaus met Rebekah's eyes and it was clearly a touchy subject for the both of them. After a long moment, he nodded and Rebekah let out a barely auditable sigh.
"Do you trust me?" Caroline almost breathed and looked him the eyes. He nodded once more and Caroline shot him a small smile.
"Okay. I need you to stand up, alone." Caroline said and she watched how Klaus fought himself to his feet while Rebekah took a couple of steps away.
Then Caroline moved away too and turned her back towards him. She took a deep breath and before she could think twice about it, she was pressed against Klaus, her lips on his.
The small pieces of the stake that had stuck out from Klaus' chest seemed to dig into her for a moment but when he began kissing her back, it disappeared from her thoughts and the pain stopped. A weird sound escaped her lips as Klaus snaked an arm around her waist and pulled her harder against him.
This wasn't at all like the kisses they had shared in Seville. It was so much better. The control Caroline had felt when she began the kiss was disappearing rapidly and a gasp escaped her when she felt Klaus' tongue graze her bottom lip. She let her hand move from his cheek and back to his neck, pressing her lips harder against his and making her whole body hum with pleasure.
"Excuse me? In case you have forgotten, I am still here." Rebekah called from beside them and Caroline quickly pulled away from Klaus in embarrassment. She heard a small groan of irritation come from him but she kept her eyes on Rebekah, who was smirking at her.
"Please tell me that what you just did worked. Otherwise I have to poke my eyes out for nothing."
Caroline glanced at Klaus chest for a moment and felt how her cheeks turned bright red under his gaze.
"It did." Caroline choked out and then looked at Rebekah, avoiding Klaus. "Excuse me, I have to go…" she continued and managed to walk out of Klaus' reach before he was able to stop her. She heard him say her name but instead of turning around, she just ran out of there as fast as she possibly could.
