"One more time; why is it, it has to be me?" Caroline asked Lucy with a nervous voice.

"Because you are the only one that I can't count on not to be corrupted by it. I don't know you, Caroline, but Bonnie do and that is what she told me." Lucy said firmly, explaining what was going to happen for the third time since she told her in Spain.

"What if I am not able to control it? Won't all that power do… something to me?"

"I don't know. There are some things that are uncertain about this, but this is the only way to be rid of Silas for good. Just know that I will do anything in my power to protect you from losing yourself. But you might have to sacrifice some things."

A thousand thoughts ran through Caroline's head as she wondered what Lucy meant. Was it things like her sanity, a limb or her blonde hair? Or was it someone. Like her friends or a certain hybrid, who had what seemed like an unhinged need for power.

"Like what?" Caroline asked, wary of the answer.

"I won't know until it actually happens."

"Why do I feel like I am not making a very informed decision?" Caroline laughed humourlessly.

"Do you remember what I told you in Spain?"

"Yes. And I still stand by my answer." Caroline replied with confident voice.

Lucy had already in Spain informed her that there would be uncertainties about what they were going to do and that there could be side effects to the spell that they didn't knew about. But Caroline had told her that all she needed to know was that it would rid the world of Silas.

"Good. All you have to do is convince the others that you have to kill Silas. If this is going to work, you have to physically connect with his blood. If not, the spell will find the strongest host and settle within that person."

"Klaus?" Caroline asked, but she wasn't talking to Lucy. While talking to the witch, Caroline had moved from her bedroom to the kitchen, passing through the entrance hall to get there. At the corner of her eye she saw a man stand outside the front door, but as soon as she turned to face him, he was gone.

"Yes. He would most likely be the one." Lucy said, interrupting Caroline's thoughts as she brought her back to their conversation.

"No that wasn't what I- wait, so if I don't connect with Silas' blood when you lift the spell off him, all of his powers will go into Klaus?" Caroline asked, suddenly alert. One thing was her struggling with having put a two-thousand year old immortality spell on her, a whole other thing was Klaus who most likely would try to take over the world and probably succeed.

"Exactly."

"Oh. That doesn't sound… sustainable." Caroline said hesitantly, lacking a better word to use.

"That was very mildly put." Lucy commented and Caroline knew what that really meant. The witch had been afraid that Caroline and Klaus had a little more than friendly relationship that would make Caroline go against the plan and put everyone in danger by making Klaus stronger than ever. Lucy had expressed those concerns in Spain and Caroline had not told her about what had happened since. She wasn't going to either.

"I guess. Look, I know what will happen if Klaus got hold of Silas' powers and I'm not going to let that happen. I won't tell any of them what is going on and afterwards I guess I'll just gonna have to get used to deceiving people. But that is kind of one of Silas' skills, so perhaps that comes with the powers too."

"Well, you did manage to trick Katherine at the masquerade ball, didn't you?"

"I did. But that was only for a few minutes. I have to do this for the rest of my very immortal life."

"And Bonnie believes that you can do it. Or at least until the time is right to tell your friends."

"It almost hurts when I think about how much I miss her." Caroline said with a sad voice.

"She will be there tomorrow with the other Bennett witches. You won't be able to talk to her or touch her, but you can see her and she can see you. Just remember to concentrate on Silas, otherwise it won't work." Lucy urged, but Caroline felt a smile grow her face at the thought of seeing her best friend again.

"I will. Okay, I think I'm as ready as I can be now. I'll talk to you later with the others." Caroline replied and hung up the phone after Lucy said goodbye.

"And it has to be her?" Klaus asked with an equal amount of anger and worry. He was staring at the phone of the table in front all of them and didn't notice the pair of blue eyes that lingered on his face.

"That is how the spell works. It will give someone the momentary strength to kill Silas, but for it to work it has be someone that Silas has tied himself to, so to speak. Someone that he will be more "receiving" of. That will also make the illusion of his lover more powerful. Caroline is that person. By spending time with him, thinking he was Stefan, they have – despite it being unwillingly – tied a bond between them and that will be crucial if the spell is going to work." Lucy explained over the phone and the room went silent.

Klaus then turned his gaze from the phone and met Caroline's eyes. She didn't look away and just stared into those pools of emotion that disabled her from moving. He was clearly not happy with this arrangement and Caroline kept forgetting that he didn't know the real reason why it had to be her. She kept forgetting that for him this wasn't about the powers she would gain from Silas instead of him, but about her being in danger without him being able to do anything.

Lucy had told them that a force field of sorts would be created by the witches around Caroline and Silas and the others would be on the other side of it, unable to reach Silas and Caroline before it was over. Their role was to make Silas believe that Caroline was his old lover. The woman he had planned to make immortal with him, but instead she was killed by Qetsiyah.

The plan was for Caroline to meet Silas alone, getting Tyler out of the way. With help from the witches on the other side, the two of them would be trapped together inside the grounds of the witch hotspot that Caroline had once created, by the Bennett witches surrounding them. The witches would place a kind of sleeping curse on Silas, enabling the other vampires to enter his mind and make him see what they wanted him to: his old lover.

Caroline would convince him that he needed to die and come with her, so they could finally be together and then she would have to kill him. Lucy had said that the best way would be to rip his heart out as she would physically connect with his blood that way. Unknown to the others, the witches would cast a spell that transferred the immortality spell that Silas had created to Caroline and the two-thousand year old vampire would die.

What would happen after, none of them knew. Caroline was already a vampire and there was no saying what would happen, when the immortality spell was put on her. Lucy had warned her that sacrifices might had to be made, but Caroline was sure it was worth it if it meant saving the people she loved.

"Well, he did kiss her, so there must be something tying him to her."

Caroline's eyes widened as she heard her friend's words and she quickly averted her gaze from Klaus to Elena. The room went completely silent as they all stared at Caroline and she could even hear the shock on the other side of the phone call. As Elena saw the expression on Caroline's friend and thereafter snuck a peek on Klaus, she realised the mistake she had made.

Damon sat beside his girlfriend and watched how the shock spread like a wave through the room with a smirk on his face. He watched how Rebekah glared angry at Caroline until the blonde Original saw the innocent but shocked look on the other blonde's face and instead Rebekah just smiled to herself. She liked this kind of drama as much as Damon did and a short and amused look was shared between them.

"He did what?" Klaus asked with a dangerously calm voice without taking his eyes of Caroline. The blonde vampire seemed however eager to look at everyone else, sending Elena a long and irritated glare.

"It was nothing. More like an attack. He was just messing with me." Caroline quickly said and shrugged her shoulders in an attempt make it seem like it meant nothing.

"He attacked you. When?" Klaus asked and the anger inside of him was evident. This time Caroline looked him straight in the eyes as she answered just as calmly as he had talked.

"The day I got back. But I can take care of myself. I have for the last two months, when you didn't even know that he was still running around. So stop patronizing me and let's get on with this."

Klaus looked at her with eyes full of emotion and then moved to the edge of his seat and leaned towards her.

"Caroline…" he started, but nothing else came out, so Caroline mirrored his motions and looked him in the eyes.

"Klaus." was all she said with a firm voice, showing that there was nothing more to discuss. They stared at each other for a long moment and Caroline was sure they could have sat there for hours if Rebekah hadn't cleared her throat.

"You two really have to learn to be attentive to the fact that there are other people in the room before you start dressing each other down like that." the blonde Original sat with a dull voice, but the smile on her face was clearly an amused one.

"Rebekah." the warning voice that came from the phone was Elijah's and Rebekah rolled her eyes at her brother.

"Please don't do that." Elijah said and a small smile appeared on all of their faces except for Rebekah's. She looked around her, scanning the room suspiciously as she looked for Elijah, but when he wasn't to be seen, she just glared at the phone.

"Okay, so now that we've all agreed that Barbie is our mighty saviour, what then? What happens after?" Damon said, interrupting the siblings' battering.

As Lucy began explaining, Caroline's eyes moved from the phone and back to Klaus, who was staring at her. It felt like an electric current went through her and she was reminded of their second day in Spain. It was that morning where Caroline had begun feeling the changes inside of her. The night before felt like nothing compared to what she had realised that morning; he was trying to understand her.

He had done it by threatening her with capture and tried to compel her, but he had still tried and that had meant more to her than she even realised.

Caroline felt a smile grow on her face before she even knew what she was smiling at and Klaus looked at her with a confused expression on his face. For some reason it made her want to laugh but instead she just looked away and tried to focus on what Lucy was saying through the phone.

She could feel his eyes on her and after nearly a minute she looked back at him. He was smiling at her and Caroline felt a thousand butterflies fly through her stomach, making her blush and look away once more. As the next couple of hours went by, they shared a few looks and when the night slowly came creeping, Caroline had a small smile on her lips that she couldn't get rid of.

When they finally felt that everything was taking into account, they decided to end the evening and go home. Rebekah left her chair with nothing more than a "bye" and Damon and Elena was quickly out of the door, leaving Caroline alone with Klaus.

She quickly grabbed her jacket that hung over her chair and walked to the front door with Klaus right behind her. As she reached it, a hand cut in front of her and opened the door for her. She turned around to look at Klaus, who was watching her intently. There was a short moment of silence between them before Caroline spoke.

"Were you at my house earlier?"

"I was just making sure that everything was fine, love. The conversation you had with Silas had me worried."

Caroline sighed and tilted her head to the right as she looked at him. She didn't know what to think of this protectiveness he had over her or the possessiveness he had shown earlier. When she opened her mouth first, it was to argue with him. To tell him that she could take care of herself, like she had done earlier, but instead she stepped closer to him and placed her hand on his one cheek.

"Thank you." Caroline said and then she leaned forward and kissed his other cheek. She let her lips linger there a little longer than was normal and let them brush the corner of his mouth as she pulled away. He looked down at her with dark eyes and Caroline shot him a small smile before she turned around to leave through the open door.

A hand caught hers before she could walk out his reach and she turned her head towards him in surprise. The look in his eyes told her what he wanted to do and a part of her was screaming for him to do it. To drag her back inside and take her. But another part was scared of that exact thing. Scared of how much the other part wanted it and what it would do to her if she gave in to it. That was also the part that remembered all the horrible things he had done and that is was wrong of her to be with him.

After a long moment Klaus slowly pulled her closer to him, but only to place a kiss on her hand and let it go again.

"Good night, Caroline." Klaus said and Caroline smiled at him. She turned around once more and walked to her car with fast steps. As she got in the driver's seat, she looked in her rear-view mirror and met the pair of green-blue eyes that were staring into hers. As she put her key into the ignition and started the car, the front door closed behind her and Caroline drove off with a sigh.
