"No!" Tyler roared as soon as he realized why Caroline suddenly had fallen and took a tighter hold on the blonde to stop her from collapsing onto the floor. The smug grin on the vampire in front of him quickly disappeared as he eyed the angry hybrid and he looked at the blonde woman in confusion.
"What did you do? What did you give her?" Tyler yelled as he scooped Caroline into his arms and stepped closer to the now scared vampire, who backed up against the opposite wall.
"I just thought… I was only trying to help." the vampire stuttered and looked at Tyler with wide eyes as he let go of the empty syringe in his hand.
"What did you do?" Tyler asked again; his voice turning into a low growl. Caroline was writhing in his arms and pain shone from her eyes as she blindly looked around to find the cause of her agony.
"I injected her with werewolf venom. I thought-" the vampire explained with a shaking voice and it looked like he was trying to blend in with the wall, failing miserably. He interrupted himself as soon as he saw the amber in the hybrid's eyes and he closed his eyes for brief moment, knowing that he had just made a fatal mistake.
"Leave. Now." Tyler ordered him as he stepped forward towards the vampire in a threatening manner. "Run as far away as you can and maybe I won't find and kill you later."
"But-" the vampire started and looked around in an attempt to find help from the other vampires that had now gathered in the hall. He had been the only one to even realize that something had been going on as the prisoners tried to escape while the rest of his friends had just sat around and watched television. Why was he the one being punished?
The only thing he found in their faces was shock and one more look at Tyler told him that none of them were willing to help him. He only got a short glimpse of Tyler's fangs before he ran for his life and away from New Orleans.
"Move." Tyler sneered at the small crowd as he pushed through the narrow hall and towards the common room, where he carefully placed Caroline on an empty sofa. He ignored the vampires, who were now gathering around him, and got on his knees beside the sofa to have a better look at his old lover.
"Tyler?" Caroline asked feebly as her eyes searched his face and he smiled down at her, caressing her cheek with his hand.
"I'm here, Care. Don't worry, you're safe." Tyler told her with a comforting voice but it didn't remove the shock from her blue eyes. He could feel the stares from the five surrounding vampires on his back, but as long as they kept silent he decided to ignore him.
"What are you doing here?" she asked, her voice already getting stronger and she tried to sit up, only to be pushed back gently by Tyler. His eyes widened when he suddenly noticed the crimson liquid that Caroline's right hand was covered in and she followed his gaze with a shameful look on her face.
"What happened?" Tyler asked worriedly as he grabbed Caroline's wrist and pulled it close. He was surprised to find that the blood hadn't dried in but even more that it wasn't her own.
"Tyler… We should get out of here." Caroline suddenly whispered into his ear and Tyler leaned backwards to see her eye the vampires around her before directing her gaze to the ceiling with a concentrated look on her face.
"It's fine, Caroline. They listen to me, they won't touch you." he assured her with a small laugh but his smile fell as soon as he saw the disbelief in her eyes and Caroline was on her feet in a quick movement. He reached out for her when she swayed unsteadily for a short moment, but she stopped him with her hands.
"What did you inject me with?" Caroline then asked as she reached up to touch her neck with her clean hand.
Tyler pursed his lips in annoyance as he hadn't had the time to figure out how he was going to save Caroline from the venom. The only cure belonged to the man he was trying to destroy and just dropping Caroline on his doorstep didn't seem like a good plan.
"I'll figure something out, Caroline. Just sit down and try to be calm." Tyler tried in an attempt to not make her panic and moved forward, only to have Caroline step away.
"Tell me it isn't what I think it is, Tyler." Caroline sneered at him and he felt himself frown at her harsh tone. Apparently a lot had happened since he saw her last because his Caroline would be scared at the thought of having werewolf venom in her system. But the woman in front of him just seemed irritated as if it was just a minor bump on the road.
"Care-" he started but was interrupted when all attention suddenly was directed towards the vampire who had just entered the room with a heart in his hand.
"The prisoners have escaped and Hans is dead." the vampire said with a trembling voice and looked at the heart in his hand for a long moment, making his eyes rim with tears. He looked young, maybe only fifteen in human years and Tyler once again doubted Pheodora's recruiting skills.
It took a long moment for the boy's words to register with Tyler, but when they did, his head snapped back to Caroline, who was watching him with apologetic eyes while she clenched her bloodied hand at her side. Before Tyler could even open his mouth to speak, one of the surrounding vampires lurched towards Caroline, who reacted faster than the blink of an eye.
The attacking vampire was now frozen in his place with Caroline's hand through his chest and their audience looked at them in shock. Caroline stared angrily at her attacker for a moment before turning to look at Tyler with a softer expression on her face.
"You're him, aren't you?" Caroline asked with a surprisingly sad voice and Tyler found himself at a loss for words. "You're the one who has fought Klaus before and is now helping that woman down there."
"What is going on?" Tyler asked in confusion as he looked between Caroline, the heart in the boy's hand and the frightened vampire who was about to have his ripped out.
"Your new lady friend kidnapped me. And Klaus' son. Apparently she was going to cut off my head and wrap it as gift for Klaus." Caroline explained with a small sneer in her voice and Tyler felt his own blood start to boil when he realized why she was there; she was with Klaus.
"So that's why you're here. You're with him, with Klaus." Tyler growled back at her, making Caroline blink in surprise at his suddenly harsh tone. Whatever war there had been between Klaus and her ex-boyfriend clearly hadn't ended; for Tyler at least.
"Let's make a deal, because soon my arm will get heavy and I will have remove my hand from this guy's chest. You ask your new friends to back up and I won't pull the heart out with me.
"I'll even go back with you to that creepy cellar, where I – and I am really sorry about that – killed Hans. And then we can talk and I can figure out what the hell is going on." Caroline suggested calmly, keeping her eyes on Tyler, whose breathing had deepened because of the apparent anger he felt.
When Tyler nodded after a long moment and sent the rest of the vampires a warning stare, Caroline slowly unclenched her fingers from around the beating heart and pulled out her arm. The freed vampire fell to the ground in both pain and relief but no one dared to help him up as it meant being close to the blonde vampire.
A few more seconds passed as Caroline and Tyler exchanged glares and the room seemed to hold its breath until Caroline suddenly walked forward and towards the staircase to the cellar with Tyler on her heels.
The two of them walked in silence down the small hall in the basement and Caroline slowly placed herself back into the chair she had been seated in earlier as soon as they reached the prison cell.
She watched as Tyler glanced first at Hans and then at Julio, who would soon wake up. Caroline almost cringed when he quickly crouched by Pheodora on the floor and soothed a hand over her hair, shooting Caroline a dirty look.
"So you're sleeping with her?" Caroline asked, even though it came out more as a statement and she was surprised to hear the anger in her voice. The anger had nothing to do with Tyler sleeping with someone else but everything to do with who he chose as a partner.
"Are you seriously jealous?" Tyler asked as he got to his feet and stood in front of her with his arms crossed in front of him. Caroline rolled her eyes at the small hint of amusement that his voice held and mimicked his posture by crossing her own arms.
"It's been five years, Tyler. I've moved on, trust me." Caroline retorted with a smile of her own and she was surprised to see how his body visibly tensed.
"That's right. You're with Klaus now. What a surprise!" Tyler said with a cold voice that once again made Caroline wonder what the story between the hybrids was.
"Aren't you going to tie me up or something?" Caroline then asked as she ignored Tyler's wrong assumptions about her relationship with Klaus.
"Why? Are you going to kill more of my vampires?" Tyler asked curiously but the anger was still present in his voice. Caroline met his stare as he seemed to study her intently as if some great mystery would be solved if he just looked hard enough. "The Caroline I know would never do something like that."
"The Caroline you knew is gone or at least some of her is. A lot can happen in five years, Tyler." she told him calmly and placed her hands on the armrests with a small tilt of her head.
"What has happened during the last five years?" Tyler asked insistently and leaned forward as if to help him hear her answer better.
"Long story." she said with a shrug and glanced quickly at the floor where the lifeless body of Pheodora laid.
"I thought Klaus had taken you." Tyler admitted in a low voice and Caroline's eyebrows lifted in surprise.
"What?" she laughed exasperated and she noticed how Tyler took a calming breath. "Are you serious?"
"Klaus is a psychopath and he had this creepy obsession with you. And you have always been the only thing he couldn't just have." Tyler explained with voice but Caroline barely listened as she in her mind tried to make all the pieces fit together. It was hard, though. She was after all missing half of puzzle.
"So you think I'm just some thing he wants because he can't?" Caroline asked incredulously when she realized what he had said. Tyler opened his mouth to correct her but closed it with a sigh when he realized that the damage had already been done. And he still knew Caroline well enough to know when not to argue with her.
"Of course not. But of all people he had to choose you! He knew how I felt about you; how much I loved you." Tyler said, his voice almost pleading her to understand and Caroline sighed in resignation.
"So you got jealous and what? Decided to wage a war against him?"
"It isn't a war if only one of us is fighting." Tyler told her calmly and Caroline fought the urge to laugh again.
"You took his son, Tyler. You really think he's just going to sit there and wait for you to destroy his life?" she asked with a sudden desperation. Pheodora wouldn't listen to her warnings but maybe Tyler would.
"His son? What are you talking about?" Tyler said with a frown and shot a quick look at Pheodora.
"Have you even been listening to me?! Those vampires of yours didn't just kidnap Camille and I; they also took Henrik." Caroline exclaimed and her eyes became wide when she reached out for the sound of Henrik that wasn't there. What had they done to him?
"Shit!" Tyler yelled as he hit the wall with a strength that made the ceiling shake.
"Yes, your goonies fucked up so be smart, Tyler, and leave. This stupid vendetta isn't worth losing your lives over." Caroline urged and stood up, flinching when Tyler's head suddenly snapped towards her.
"'Stupid vendetta'? After everything Klaus has done to me, you call this a 'stupid vendetta'. He killed my mother, Caroline! My mother! The last member of my family and he just killed her like she was nothing!" Tyler roared and Caroline took a step back, shocked by both his words and ferocity.
"What? What are you talking about? Your mother drowned, Tyler." Caroline said with a low voice in an attempt to calm him down but it only seemed to make it worse.
"Because Klaus drowned her! How could you just forget that?" he yelled again, this time sounding more out of breath and his eyes showed how hurt he was by her amnesia. Caroline put a hand in front of her mouth in shock when she realized that she actually had forgotten and her eyes almost filled with tears at the sight of the broken man in front of her.
"What did he do to you?" Tyler suddenly asked with a low snarl and he grabbed her chin so violently that it hurt her, making her turn her head away and out of his grasp. "He compelled you, didn't he?"
"No! He didn't compel me!" Caroline yelled back and took a small step back, moving further away from the angry hybrid.
"Why? Because Klaus would never do that? God, Caroline! Stop being so blind!"
"I'm on vervain, you idiot!" she lied but the answer didn't seem to satisfy him. For a second she thought about telling him the truth about what had really happened to her five years ago, but for some reason she couldn't and it made her sad to realize that she didn't trust him.
"Then how could you just forget?" Tyler yelled and Caroline felt to her frustration how a dull headache had made its appearance.
"Because I forgot all of it! Silas, Klaus, the Original family! All of it, just gone! God, my head hurts." Caroline retorted in a loud voice and she was surprised that no one had come down to check on them yet. But on the other side: who could beat a hybrid? Except for Caroline, that is. But they didn't know that.
"How?" Tyler asked calmly but the fact that they had stopped yelling didn't seem to have any effect on the pain in Caroline's frontal lobe.
"When we killed Silas something went wrong and I lost any memory I had of them. I woke up a week after with no memory about why I looked like a zombie and decided enough was enough. That's why I disappeared." Caroline explained with a strained voice as she rubbed her forehead and backed into a chair to sit down. The pain was almost blinding her but Tyler seemed to upset to notice.
"So you don't remember how I became a hybrid? How Klaus ordered me to bite you, how Klaus bit you? How he almost let you die just to teach me a lesson despite being in love with you?" Tyler asked with an urgent voice and had to restrain himself from shaking her when he saw how Caroline didn't seem to listen anymore.
"I- I don't-" Caroline managed to stammer before her vision turned black and her head slouched backwards.
"He destroyed my life." Tyler said as he leaned towards her over the kitchen counter. "I plan on being present for every second of his misery until I can kill him myself."
Tyler lifted his glass towards Klaus as Caroline turned to look at him. He looked broken and didn't even meet her eyes as he instead looked to the ground where his dead brother laid; burnt to a crisp.
"Fine!" Caroline exclaimed and looked back at her boyfriend. "You can gloat and multitask. This place is a disaster."
She looked around for a moment and her eyes fell on Kol's body that was unrecognizable. She willed herself to not look at Klaus as she opened a cabin and pulled out a green cloth, making Tyler take the other end so they could place it over Kol.
"Starting with the horrific burned corpse."
"Tyler's mother is dead." Klaus said slowly from the living room as he watched them and Caroline turned her head to look at him, feeling the anger heat up inside of her at his words.
"And so is my brother. We're even." he continued as he stared at Tyler with hatred. There was sorrow in his eyes too, but Caroline forced herself not to feel bad for him. "Call Bonnie and get her to let me out of here."
"I will never ever help you." Caroline told him with a sneer as she shook her head.
"How quickly you forget the part where I saved Tyler from the misery of being a werewolf. Or the night your mother invited me into her home to save the life of her precious daughter." Klaus said; his voice now strong and menacing and Caroline looked at him with disbelief, crossing her arms in front of chest.
"How delusional are you? You killed his mother!" she exclaimed as she gestured with her hands and slowly made her way towards him. "And let's not forget that we're standing in a house where Elena's aunt Jenna used to live."
"Or did you think that your charm would make us forget how you killed her too?!" Caroline almost yelled as she was now standing only a few feet from him. She felt how she was slowly losing control over her emotions and stopped herself with a small hand gesture just as she was about to continue.
"You, you- you know what? No, I am not going to engage in this." she laughed humorlessly and pressed her palms together in an attempt to regain her posture. "I… You are not even worth the calories I burn talking to you."
The next thing Caroline registered was a searing pain in her abdomen as Klaus stabbed her with a wooden pole from a lamb and Tyler's roar echoed through her head. Her mouth fell open in shock but she didn't have time to react before she was pulled inside Klaus' prison and his teeth sank into her neck.
"Caroline? Wake up, Care! Hey, look at me! That's it." Tyler's voice called from a place that seemed far away and Caroline was surprised to find him right over her when she opened her eyes. She was laying on the cement floor with her head in Tyler's lap but when she tried to get up, her head spun and she let herself get pulled back by Tyler.
"What happened?" Tyler asked worriedly and Caroline noticed to her relief that the pain in her forehead was gone. She knew what had just happened but wasn't sure she wanted to share her flashback with Tyler. What she really wanted to do was to scream at Klaus and kick him where it hurt the most.
"It was nothing." Caroline said with a low voice as she felt her earlobes and under her nose for any blood that might be there. She sighed when she found nothing and tried once more to get up, only to be held back by Tyler.
"You're hallucinating, aren't you?" he asked with an almost broken voice and Caroline couldn't stop herself from looking into his mind to see his thoughts.
She quickly withdrew when she began feeling nauseous from it. Everything within him seemed conflicted. It only took her a few moments to realize that in the end Tyler would choose his vengeance over Klaus instead of anything she could offer so she made the decision for him.
"There's a cure, right? For the venom?" Caroline asked with a feeble voice even though she was slowly regaining her strength back after her small seizure. The werewolf venom had weakened her considerately but not so much as she led Tyler to believe.
"Klaus' blood." Tyler sighed dejectedly and Caroline laughed humorlessly.
She recalled Klaus' words from the flashback about her mother inviting him in to save Caroline. She then wondered how Tyler had managed to save her from what she had just witnessed if Klaus had been so determined to teach Tyler a lesson. And hadn't Tyler said something about Klaus being in love with her?
"You need to go, Tyler. Klaus is coming here and you need to go." Caroline told him insistently but he didn't seem to believe her words as he frowned down at her. "Camille must already be with him and she will lead him back here."
"What about you?" he asked with worry and Caroline could see the conflict in his eyes.
"I need Klaus' blood to survive so I need him to find me. And leave Henrik, please. He's just a child." Caroline reasoned with a small smile on her lips. She didn't know if she actually needed Klaus' blood to survive since this was her first time in five years she had been in contact with the venom but she was better safe than sorry.
Furthermore, she needed to stay with Henrik and get back to her friends. And she needed a long and elaborate explanation from Klaus. What she had seen and heard had shocked her, but it was only as bad as what she had already imagined herself.
"And what then?" Tyler asked forcefully and Caroline already knew what he was thinking. It had been one of the things that made her nauseous.
"I'm not going to fight him, but I'm not going to fight you either. You should leave, Tyler. Run far away from here and live. Even that bitch is better than death." Caroline told him softly and gestured towards Pheodora with a small laugh. Tyler didn't seem to see the fun, though and Caroline's smile fell quickly.
"I can't." Tyler said with a cold voice as he slowly placed Caroline's head on the floor and stood up, carrying Pheodora in his arms. All Caroline could do was look up at him and nod, knowing that would be his answer. For a moment she almost felt like crying for the boy she had once loved because she wasn't sure he would make it out of this alive.
Caroline didn't move from her spot as Tyler left and another two vampires came into drag away the lifeless Julio and the body of Hans. It wasn't until she heard the small whimper of a boy outside the door that she sat up, feeling her body ache dangerously and she took a quick look to see how dark veins were spreading towards her heart from her neck.
It was the vampire, who had earlier discovered Hans' corpse that stood in the doorway with Henrik on his arm and he shot Caroline a fearful glance before he put down the boy and disappeared.
"Henrik." Caroline called silently and reached her arms out towards the boy with tear-stained cheeks. He blinked rapidly as if he was surprised that she knew his name and Caroline felt her stomach churn at the sight of his unrecognizing eyes.
"It's okay, sweetie. It's Caroline. Remember me? I'm a friend of your dad." Caroline tried with a gentle voice but Henrik took a step backwards when she suddenly winced from pain as she slowly tried to move closer to him. The venom had finally seemed to kick in, but as far as Caroline knew she still had hours before it would be fatal.
"The pretty lady." Henrik suddenly whispered to himself and a wide smile spread on Caroline's lips.
"You're pretty cute yourself, you know." Caroline told him with a wink and she was excited to see him blush. At least it seemed like they hadn't done anything to him and the sparkle in his blue eyes was slowly returning.
"I know you're really strong so could you help me with something?" Caroline asked him carefully and his eyes shone with curiosity as he nodded. "I need to get over to that wall and sit but I can't get up from here. Do you think you can pull me up?"
Caroline wore a serious expression on her face and she could see how Henrik seemed to assess the situation before he slowly moved closer and grabbed her stretched out hands. Just as Henrik pulled, Caroline pushed herself from the floor with a groan and thanked Henrik, who wore a proud smile.
She reached out for Henrik's hand, which he took after a moment's consideration and walked over to the nearest wall to lean against it. She needed something to keep her upright but wouldn't want risking falling of one of the chairs. As she sat down, Henrik slowly climbed onto her lap and with a small sigh he leaned against her with the side of his head resting against her shoulder.
"Are the bad men gone?" Henrik asked after a long moment of silence and Caroline placed her cheek on the boy's head with a tired sigh.
"Yes and you're never going to see them again." she told him with a reassuring voice, removing her head from his when he leaned away to look at her.
"Promise?" he asked with a small voice and Caroline noticed how his lower lip trembled as tear rimmed his eyes. She placed a quick kiss on his forehead before she smiled down at him and poked the tip of his nose lightly.
"Promise."
"I'm scared." Henrik then said as he leaned back into her chest and Caroline tightened her arms around him in a soothing manner.
"Me too." she whispered into his hair and she felt how he slowly relaxed in her embrace.
"My dad is never scared." he continued and Caroline felt herself smile at his words. Klaus Mikaelson had a son, who had been kidnapped; a parent's worst nightmare. Klaus was most likely very angry and very scared.
"Your father is the strongest man I know and he can win over all the bad guys, but everyone gets scared sometimes. Even your dad. But I also know that he'll be very proud of you for being so brave." Caroline told the boy animatedly in attempt to cheer him up and Henrik's head perked up to look at her.
"You think so?"
"I know so."
"Is my dad coming to save us?"
"He's on his way right now along with your aunt Rebekah and uncle Kol."
"Aunt Bekah is scary sometimes but she also gives me ice cream so I like her." Henrik narrated as he played with Caroline's shirt and she laughed silently at his words. "Dad says that uncle Kol is a moron, but I'm not sure what that means. I think he's funny. Will Stefan come?"
"I'm sure he will. Do you like him?"
"He's funny too. He always plays with me when dad is busy. I like 'Lijah too but he's away right now."
"You have a fun family, huh?" Caroline said and couldn't help but think of the irony of her words. But the boy didn't see all the bad things and Caroline hoped it would be a long time before he had to. This day had already been more than enough traumatic to last a lifetime. A human one, that is.
"Yeah, I like them. Will you be in my family too?" Henrik asked and Caroline almost laughed in surprise.
"Do you want me to be?" she asked curiously and smiled when Henrik nodded slowly.
"Dad says you sing good." Henrik said with a shrug as if that was enough reason to be a part of that special group of people. Caroline wondered how Klaus even knew she could sing since it wasn't something she did very often in public, but she wouldn't remember anyway. "Can you sing?"
"You know, I'm really tired but maybe you can sing for me?" Caroline suggested as she tilted her head to look down at Henrik and he nodded after a long moment of thought.
As Henrik repeatedly sang 'Itsy Bitsy Spider', Caroline felt her eyelids grow heavy and her head rolled to the side as she became more and more tired. She had barely noticed how Henrik had stopped singing and now was eyeing the dark veins that had spread across her upper chest.
A sharp pain woke her up and she groaned loudly at the feeling as she quickly removed Henrik's hand from where he was touching her skin. Caroline breathed heavily to control herself as she felt how the veins slowly appeared under her eyes and she managed to pull herself out of it when she heard Henrik's sobbing.
"It's okay, sweetie. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. Everything is fine." she told him with a comforting voice as she rocked him back and forth in her arms, making the crying stop a little.
"I want my dad." Henrik sobbed and Caroline placed a quick kiss at the top of his head before nodding.
"I know. He will be here soon, Henrik. And when he comes, we can anywhere you want. We can go to Disney World, The North Pole or even Neverland if you want to. Would you like that?" Caroline said cheerfully and she felt how Henrik nodded against her chest.
"Can we go now?" he asked with a small voice, making Caroline laugh lightly and she noticed to her relief that he had stopped crying.
"No, sweetie. We have to wait for your father. But when he comes, we'll go. Okay?"
"Okay."
