"Again, again!" Henrik yelled as he clapped his hands in excitement and stared at Caroline with wide eyes. The blonde couldn't help but laugh at the small boy who sat in front of her on the bed and wasn't scared at all.

"Easy, love. We don't want to tire out Caroline." Klaus told his son with a stern look at the blue-eyed boy, whose shoulders slumped slightly and Caroline frowned at the hybrid.

"Relax, Nik." she drawled in a heavy British accent and Henrik started giggling as he heard his aunt's voice come from Caroline's mouth. "We are just having fun, aren't we, darling?"

Klaus scowled at her and Caroline had trouble holding back a laugh as well. She sent the hybrid a challenging look, but he didn't say a word so she turned her attention back to Henrik.

They had spent the last twenty minutes – since Elijah saved the boy from a childhood trauma and brought him to Klaus' room – like this and even though it was getting slightly harder for Caroline to concentrate on the right voice or face she wasn't going to stop. Not as long as Henrik was no longer afraid of being near her.

The boy had been a little wary of her to begin with but then Caroline had pulled out her party trick and mimicked Henrik's voice perfectly. It had shocked him to begin with but soon Caroline had him rolling around on the floor in laughter.

"Do another one!" Henrik exclaimed and then looked at his father before pointing at him. "Do Dad!"

Caroline's lips parted slightly as she was suddenly left speechless and her eyes locked with Klaus', who had trouble keeping a straight face as well. Hopefully Henrik would never know how close she had been to doing just that less than half an hour ago. Caroline cleared her throat when she realized they had been silent for too long and Henrik was staring at them intently.

"Are you okay with this?" Caroline asked Klaus warily, not knowing how he might react to someone assuming his identity so easily. After all, his voice and face could open many doors in New Orleans especially. But Klaus just gave her a short nod and Caroline took a deep breath to concentrate.

"This is gonna be so weird." she whispered to herself and Klaus' low chuckle told her that he had heard.

"Hello, love." Caroline spoke in a baritone voice and she purposely kept her gaze on Henrik as she couldn't continue if she accidentally looked at Klaus. "Have I ever told you about the time I went trekking in the Andes and I met a hummingbird?"

There was a long moment of silence as Henrik's stare shifted between Klaus and Caroline, and the latter almost jumped in surprise as the boy suddenly let out a high pitched noise in laughter and tipped backwards. Caroline couldn't help but laugh herself as she watched Henrik rolled around on his back and she turned her head to find Klaus glaring at her, which only made her laugh more.

"That was rubbish, sweetheart." he murmured to her as his son was still in a fit of laughter and Caroline noticed his deliberate use of 'sweetheart' instead of 'love'. "I don't speak like that."

"Seriously?" Caroline laughed at him, which only made his scowl deeper and she rolled her eyes in response. "You practically told me those exact words at the Miss Mystic Falls pageant, remember?"

"Ah, you mean our date." Klaus said in a teasing voice and Caroline narrowed her eyes at him.

"The date I was forced to go on." Caroline retorted with lifted eyebrows but Klaus noticed the mirth in her eyes and a smirk formed on his lips.

"After all these years I think you can admit that you enjoyed yourself, love."

"Sure. It was great to watch my boyfriend and your baby mama stroll around hand in hand while my best friend was acting like a mindless floozy, who didn't care that she was hurting my other best friend." Caroline rambled as she gestured with her hands and Klaus' smile dropped as she managed to evade any admission.

"You knew my mum?" a small voice asked from beside them before Klaus could answer Caroline and their eyes snapped to the boy, who was no longer laughing but listening to every word they said.

Caroline's eyes widened as she realized her mistake and Henrik now had asked the question she had been dreading for the last twenty minutes. Because she knew what would follow after that and didn't think she would be able to do that.

"I- Yes. I mean-" Caroline stammered as she looked at Klaus for help, not sure whether to lie or tell the truth. She was surprised to see how unrattled he seemed by Henrik's question and Caroline was almost certain that he didn't expect what would come next.

"Yes, Caroline knew your mother. Truth be told they weren't the best of friends." Klaus confided in his son and whispered the last part as if it was a secret that Caroline shouldn't hear.

Klaus didn't notice the wide pleading eyes that were staring at Caroline and she didn't know where to look as she found herself backed into a corner by a five year old boy.

"Can I see?" Henrik asked with a small pout on his lips and Klaus suddenly looked confused as his gaze shifted between his son and an uncomfortable looking Caroline.

"See what, love?" Klaus questioned and was surprised by the pleading look in the boy's eyes as Henrik turned his eyes from Caroline to him. From the corner of his eye Klaus saw Caroline shaking her head almost unnoticeably and he suddenly realized what his son wanted.

"My mom. Caroline can show me my mom." Henrik explained as he looked back at Caroline and the vampire felt her throat tighten at the thought of what she had to tell him.

"Sweetie, I'm sorry, but I can't." Caroline spoke softly as she nervously fidgeted with her fingers. She didn't know how to explain to the boy that she couldn't possible impersonate Hayley Marshall. And even harder was it to explain how wrong it would be to show a young boy his dead mother as if she was alive and well.

"Why not?" Henrik questioned with an innocent look in his eyes as he glanced between Caroline and Klaus. Caroline's wide blue eyes met Klaus' for a second before the hybrid turned towards to his son.

"Henrik." Klaus said to catch his son's attention, but the boy kept staring at the skittish blonde as he quickly had picked up that something was wrong. With a small sigh Klaus gently grabbed Henrik's chin and turned his head towards him.

"We have talked about this, remember? Your mum is gone, love. And Caroline is not able to bring her back despite how much she wished that she could." Klaus slowly told Henrik, who frowned in response and backed out of his father's grasp.

"But Caroline can show me. Like she did with aunt Bekah." he argued with a confident nod and hopeful look in his eyes. Caroline drew a shaky breath when his round blue eyes turned to her once more. "Please?"

"Henrik, I'm… I can't. I just can't." Caroline said with a sad voice and slowly reached out for his hand. She drew back as if she had burned herself when the boy balled his hands into fists and scooted away from her.

"Why not?!" Henrik exclaimed angrily and his voice had suddenly found a higher pitch. The abrupt mood change made it painfully clear who the boy's father was. "Is it because you hate her? Do you hate my mum?"

"No, I-" Caroline tried desperately but was cut off as Henrik suddenly jumped of the bed.

"Henrik." Klaus spoke in a stern voice as he slowly moved forward to grab his son, but the boy just took a step out his reach as he kept staring at Caroline.

"Why do you hate her?!" Henrik screamed at her with hurtful eyes and tears started streaming down his face. Caroline's own vision blurred slightly as she found herself unable to speak and she quickly backed of the bed as Klaus squatted in front of his son with a grip on Henrik's arms.

"Caroline doesn't hate your mum." Klaus tried to explain in a calm voice, but the underlying anger was clear. He knew that the five year old didn't mean what he was saying, but it still wasn't acceptable for him to make such accusations.

"Then why won't she show me her?" Henrik cried as he half-heartedly fought against his father's grasp and Klaus pulled the boy into an embrace as he stood up; lifting Henrik off the ground.

"She wants to, but she just can't." was all Klaus could think of to say, but Henrik just kept crying into his shirt. As he tried to comfort his son Klaus slowly turned around to look at Caroline, but the blonde had her back turned towards them as she stiffly stared out of the window.

"It is like that one time when Kol really wanted to help you build the Lego castle, but he stepped and slipped on one of the bricks so he suddenly couldn't. Remember that?" Klaus continued as he recalled the incident from three weeks ago. He knew it was an absurd comparison, but hopefully the memory would cheer up the boy.

"And then Bonnie had to help him all day, but she got mad and left." Henrik muttered between his sniffling and Klaus smiled as a small giggle made it past Henrik's lips. "Will you get mad if I see Mum?"

"No." Klaus said as he pulled away to look down at his son and he noticed with relief that Henrik had stopped crying. "But I think you will get very sad afterwards."

"Okay." Henrik said in a low voice even though he probably didn't understand why and Klaus placed a kiss on the boy's forehead before putting him down.

"Go find Elijah." Klaus told as he gently pushed Henrik towards the open door and he noticed how the boy briefly glanced at Caroline's back before running out of the room.

A heavy silence fell over the room as Klaus listened to Henrik's footsteps and he slowly closed the door when he heard his son find Elijah. His eyes rested on Caroline's back for several seconds before he calmly stepped towards her.

"I'm sorry." Caroline suddenly spoke in an almost inaudible voice that barely qualified as breaking the silence and Klaus paused right behind her. "I didn't mean to upset him. I just… It felt wrong."

"Caroline." Klaus sighed as he placed a hand on her shoulder and gently spun her around to face him. There was a wavering smile on her lips as their eyes met, but it was clearly a mask as a few tears silently rolled down her cheeks.

"I always thought I was good with kids, but it turns out that I really suck." Caroline laughed as she quickly wiped away her tears, but there was no humor in her eyes.

"It's not you, love. Henrik can be quite hard to handle at times. Especially when it comes to Hayley." Klaus tried to reassure her, but the blonde didn't look fully convinced.

"I wonder where he gets that from." Caroline muttered under her breath and an amused smile spread on her lips as Klaus scowled at her. He could tell from the look in her eyes that she had more snide remarks to make, but he silenced her by pressing his lips softly against hers.

If Caroline was surprised she didn't show it and her hands slowly came to rest on each side of his face as she kissed him back. The kiss was strangely comforting, but also made Caroline's stomach flip in a way it hadn't even done during their far more heated make-out session. It continued to a point where it almost made her dizzy and she had to pull back with a small gasp.

"I can't." Caroline breathed as she took a small step backwards and Klaus' hands fell from where they had rested on her hips. "I mean I need to think. Clear my head. And there are things we need to talk about."

"Such as?" Klaus questioned as he studied her intently and if the look in his eyes told her anything then Klaus wasn't completely unaffected by the kiss either.

"Damon." Caroline said with a heavy sigh and she knew that she was about to ruin whatever moment they had just had.

"No." was all Klaus said as he turned his back on her and walked over to the cabinet that held his alcohol. He had a feeling that he would have to restock it after this conversation was over.

"Seriously?" Caroline scoffed as she crossed her arms in front of her and glared at his back. She noticed how his muscles tensed underneath the grey Henley and Caroline had to exhale slowly as she remembered the feeling of digging her nails into his hot skin.

"I'm a serious man, love." Klaus spoke as he finally turned around to face her and Caroline shook out of her reverie. There was a familiar scowl on the hybrid's face as he clearly wasn't in the mood for this discussion, but it was too late to take back now.

"You know how twisted this is, right?" Caroline questioned in an annoyed tone as she stepped past him and poured herself her own drink; silently offended that he didn't offer.

"Twisted how?" Klaus retorted as he stood right behind her and Caroline feel the hair rise on her neck.

"Like you being forced into a room with Damon every scheming moment without him expressing any ounce of regret? Like him throwing you at me as if you were nothing but a mean to an end?" Klaus continued darkly and Caroline felt his hot breath wash over her, which made her abruptly turn around. "Your so-called best friends doing nothing because they were too wrapped up in their own pathetic worlds. Too in love. Too weak."

Turning around had suddenly been one of her worse ideas of the day and she had had plenty of those so far. His closeness and the intensity in his glare were overwhelming and Caroline swiftly took a step back to create some space between them. She could almost feel her resolve beginning to crumble.

"You don't think I've already thought about all of that?" Caroline retorted as she regained her voice and fought to keep it strong. It was harder than she had expected.

"I tormented myself with trying to remember every remaining day of my human life and when I finally did I wished that I could forget it all once more. Everyone else obviously did, but for months I thought about it every day.

"Then you came and I watched Stefan turn into a complete dick without his humanity. And I realized that even though he was the most decent guy I know he probably wouldn't hesitate doing to human Caroline what Damon did to her.

"So I moved on. And I did my best to accept him and Elena being together because I wanted my best friend to be happy." she finished with a firm voice and downed the amber liquid in her glass.

"Ah, yes." Klaus mused with a smirk on his lips, but his eyes seemed cold and distant. "We must not deny sweet Elena what she wants."

"You know what?" Caroline exclaimed as she put down on her glass and poked him in the chest; making the smile drop from his lips. "You are such a hypocrite! So Elena can't be with Damon, but me and you are perfectly okay?! After everything you did to her?"

"And while she did her best to end me I let her boyfriend live."

"Fine." Caroline all but yelled as she threw her hands in the air in a giving up gesture. She didn't want to fight with him right there and right now, but there was still one thing she needed to hear from him.

"But are you expecting me to believe that you have never done to anyone what Damon did to me? You have little to no regard for human life and have lived through several centuries where women were considered as no more than a man's property. Are you going to tell me that you were centuries ahead of your time or maybe the world's first feminist?"

Caroline's voice didn't show much emotion as she talked, but her laughter in the end sounded hollow and Klaus grabbed her chin gently as she looked down at the floor.

"I believe that honor goes to Elijah." Klaus said with a small smile, which Caroline tried to imitate but didn't really succeed in doing. "I have never forced myself upon a woman or compelled her to sleep with me. I never saw the fun in any of that."

"I believe you." Caroline sighed as she met his gaze and then stepped away from him when it looked as if he was about to kiss her again. They didn't have time for that. And she needed her head clear for the next few hours. "But don't think I'm letting this go. We can fight about it again in, let's say, two months."

"That's quite specific, love." Klaus replied with a low chuckle and he swallowed the rest of his drink in an attempt to hide his glee over the fact that Caroline was going be with him in two months.

"I'm a control freak. I like to plan ahead." Caroline shrugged and then slowly started pacing as she thought of what they needed to discuss next. She smiled to herself when her mind suddenly registered what planning ahead suddenly entailed. Or rather who.

"Okay, next topic." Caroline said as she clapped her hands together and Klaus frowned at her sudden burst of energy. The blonde was clearly growing restless, but her skin still held a sickly pale color. It was worrying how slow she was at healing properly and Klaus had a feeling that she was somehow holding herself back.

"Next topic?" he questioned with a curious look and Caroline stopped her pacing to sit down at the foot of his bed.

"Tell me what happened here after I left." Caroline suggested as she stared back at him and tilted her head slightly to the right. A small smile appeared on Klaus' lips as he studied the blonde and then turned around to refill his glass.

Caroline had already heard about most of it from Stefan on their way back from Orlando, but for some reason she wanted to hear Klaus' version as well. She convinced herself that it wasn't just because she liked hearing his voice.

"You can skip all the gory details." Caroline added with a small wave of her hand as Klaus settled into a chair across from her and looked ready to begin.

An hour later Klaus had told her all about the five years she had missed and she was happily surprised that he hadn't left out any of his own misdeeds. On the other hand there could be many more than those he had told her about, but perhaps she was better off not knowing. For now.

He had worn a soft smile as he told her about Henrik's first years and she had gotten lost in the way his blue eyes shone with laughter as he told about one of the many times his son had gulped on Elijah's expensive suit or Rebekah's designer dress.

He had told her about Stefan's arrival in New Orleans and – reluctantly – giving her the gossip about Stefan and Rebekah's on and off again affair that was slowly driving the hybrid mad. He told her about the shock of suddenly finding his youngest (and dead) brother standing on his doorstep with the Bennett witch in tow and how Kol quickly had made him wish that his brother was a little more indestructible.

Caroline had tensed when Klaus casually mentioned Elijah's frequent trips to New York and she silently cursed herself and the Original vampire. She had told Elijah to stay away from Katherine – especially since the girl wouldn't remember him – but she also knew that she hadn't given the Original much of a choice since she had just disappeared from the face of the Earth. Klaus didn't seem suspicious of his brother's sudden favoritism of the city, but Caroline had a feeling that it was because he already knew somehow.

When he was done Caroline started telling him about some of her adventures. She blushingly admitted that she had visited Spain first and spent almost a month in Seville. Then she had gone to England, Paris, Rome and Tokyo. Klaus was surprised by her choice of destinations, but now that Caroline had her memories back she really wasn't.

Caroline knew that he could feel her hesitation when she came to the time she had spent in Hungary, but luckily she was saved from any uncomfortable questions by Stefan, who came to check on her. Unaware of what Caroline had heard him do to Rebekah earlier he found it strange how Klaus glared at him while Caroline could barely look him in the eyes.

He left after ten awkward minutes when a sleepy Bennett witch appeared; rubbing sleep out of her eyes and ruining her make-up. An amused smirk appeared on Klaus' lips as he noticed the strange bruise of the side of her neck, while Caroline studied her friend with a small frown.

"Have you been sleeping?" Caroline asked with a curious gaze and Bonnie's eyes widened comically.

"Just like half an hour." Bonnie shrugged as she looked anywhere but at Caroline.

"Been sleep walking?" Klaus called from his chair and the witch poked her head through the door to send the hybrid a confused look. "You must have hit something to get that nasty bruise on your neck."

Bonnie clamped her hand over the said bruise before Caroline had a chance to look at it and she glanced between the embarrassed witch and amused hybrid in confusion.

"I better go check it out." Bonnie quickly said as she inwardly cursed Kol and walked down the hall in a fast tempo. She didn't even remember him kissing her neck when things had gotten a little overboard, but on the other hand she hadn't really been thinking straight at that moment.

"What was that about?" Caroline asked Klaus as her friend left without even saying goodbye, but he just kept silent with that secretive smirk on his lips.

"Where were we?" Klaus questioned when Caroline remained by the door and didn't seem eager to continue her tale. He didn't miss how her body tensed slightly an unusual dark look glided over the blonde's features.

"Well after Hungary I went to Bulgaria and then back to Italy for some time." Caroline said as she started pacing the room slowly and Klaus knew that she was hiding something. Or at least avoiding it.

"How much time did you spent in Hungary?" Klaus asked as he watched her intently and he noticed her momentarily halt a step before she started moving once more.

"A few months." Caroline shrugged as she calmed a hand through her hair and paused to stare out the window.

"What did you do in Hungary for a few months?" Klaus inquired calmly as a long moment of silence stretched between them and Caroline's body seemed to have frozen completely.

"Nothing much." Caroline replied in a low voice and stepped away from the window as she suddenly felt Klaus move towards her. "Can we move on now?"

"What happened in Hungary, love?"

"I really don't want to talk about it so could you just… just leave me alone." Caroline snapped at him as he slowly moved closer and she backed away from him.

She inhaled sharply when her back suddenly collided with a wall and she did her best to keep her vamp face from appearing. Caroline knew that Klaus wouldn't hurt her, but the more animalistic part of her – a part that had grown stronger during the last five years – felt cornered and ready for either fight of flight.

"Caroline." Klaus spoke softly as he saw the fear in the blonde's eyes and he paused a couple of meters from her. "Tell me."

"I can't." she said with a trembling voice, but her stare was unwavering.

"What happened there changed you." Klaus stated as his eyes glided over face and her blue eyes suddenly seemed to glaze over. "Whatever you did to bring you so close to death. What you did to Colin. That was something new. Who made you this ruthless?"

"So what? I'm evil now? Because I killed a few people. I could kill ten people every day for a year and still not come anywhere close to your death count." Caroline sneered at him and her eyes flashed an almost black color. Whatever trauma she had been through was enough to bring the darkest side of her.

"You really want to know?" Caroline continued as she took a step forward with almost barred teeth. It was strange seeing her like this; so unlikely the Caroline that had left five years ago. It was like flipping a switch and suddenly the light was gone from her eyes.

"Rumors about me spread in the supernatural world. A group of hunters took it upon themselves to capture me because they were afraid of what I could do. I was no threat to them or anyone, but they tortured me for days. In the end I was begging them to kill me, but they had gotten greedy.

"So they brought in a few witches to take away my powers. I never figured out what they would use them for because I got free and then I killed them all. The only one left alive was the witch who had given me my freedom. But I had killed the rest of her coven and when she tried to take me down I killed her as well.

"She helped me and I killed her. And then I couldn't stop. The bloodlust was too much. But it wasn't even the blood. I didn't need the blood. At some point I didn't feed for days, because I could barely stomach it. I just killed people. I killed hunters and other vampires. Bad vampires. All I saw was red.

"It went on for weeks and one day I found this big group of hunters. There were men and women. I knew they were hunting for me because I heard them talking so I killed them all. All eight of them. And then I heard the cries coming from inside this big house so I went in."

Caroline's body was shaking as she leaned up against the wall with closed eyes. A single tear rolled down her cheek and it looked like she was fighting to stay on her feet. Klaus felt helpless as he watched her, but he also knew that Caroline needed to finish her story no matter how gruesome it was. She had kept it to herself for far too long and Klaus knew how something like that could eat one up from inside.

"There was a baby in a cradle and two children hiding in a closet. They looked at me as if I was a monster and I was. I killed their parents. I took away their mothers and fathers because I was angry and out of control." Caroline told in a small voice and Klaus reached out for her as she suddenly slid down the wall.

Klaus longed to touch her as he squatted in front of her, but he knew she wasn't done yet. He clenched his fists in frustrations when Caroline opened her eyes and showed him how broken she truly was.

"They were going to kill you, love. You had no other choice." he tried to reassure her, but he knew it wasn't working. Caroline was going to torture herself over this for the rest of her immortal life and there was nothing he could give her but time.

"Not at first. The ones who took me... It was either them or me. They were never going to stop hunting me. But after that… I should have run and hidden. Then those children would still have their parents." Caroline cried and wrapped her arms tightly around Klaus' neck as he lifted her from the floor and over to the bed.

Gently he placed her on top of the covers and wasn't able to do much as Caroline pulled him down with her. Klaus wrapped his arm around her waist as he held her close and his other hand stroked her hair soothingly. He could feel her shaking as she cried into his chest and the only sound in the room was Caroline's sobs.

"I did run after that." Caroline murmured into his chest after a few minutes as she finally calmed down and Klaus kept still as she continued her story. "It's pretty easy when you can just change your face. I wanted to come back to Mystic Falls, but I knew they were still after me. They never caught me again, but there were times when I had to… I needed to be ruthless.

"One time they took one of my friends and I almost lost it again. You were right, you know. When you said that staying in control gets harder with the more power you get. And I hate not being in control." the blonde finished and balled up Klaus' shirt with her hands in frustration.

"Careful, love or you'll ruin my shirt." Klaus chuckled lightly as he felt himself being tugged forward by Caroline's strength and she looked up at him with a small smile on her lips. "You should get some more sleep."

"I can't. I'll just have nightmares." Caroline said in a small voice as she hid her face against his chest once more and Klaus calmed his fingers through a lock of her hair.

"You won't. I promise."

He could feel Caroline hesitate for a short moment before scooting impossible closer to him with a heavy sigh. After a couple of minutes her breathing slowed down and Klaus suddenly felt tired as well.

Caroline didn't dream of crying babies or grief-stricken witches. Instead she dreamed of her mother and that time she learned to ride a bike.

It was almost dark outside when Klaus woke up and he immediately noticed the missing warm body beside him. Looking around his room he quickly found Caroline at the window where she was sat on the sill. She sent him a shy smile as she met his gaze and then hopped off the windowsill.

"I think I'm ready to get out of here now." Caroline said as she looked at him expectantly and he pulled his phone from his pocket with a nod.

"Of course, love. I think we've been cooped up in here long enough." Klaus agreed as he found Davina's number and interrupted whatever she had planned for that evening. Fifteen minutes later Davina arrived at the door alongside everyone besides Henrik and Caroline happily hugged Bonnie as she was finally able to step outside of Klaus' bedroom.

For some reason things had been a little strange between ever since waking up after Caroline's breakdown, but none of them could pinpoint why. To be honest the whole situation was just strange. They had kissed, almost even slept together and then actually slept together. Caroline felt as if they were in some sort of limbo and neither of them could decide where to go from there.

Caroline needed to clear her head once more and she needed to do that at least 500 meters away from Klaus, which meant back at her hotel room. She knew that the others would – or at least Bonnie and Stefan – would object to her leaving, but she really needed the space.

But first she needed clothes since she couldn't keep walking around in the thin dress Rebekah had given to her, but the blonde Original already seemed to have thought of that as she more or less pushed Caroline into her room to make change.

Shortly after Caroline left the room in a pair of jeans, a loose white tank top and black blazer that matched the black boots she were wearing. She was more than confused by Rebekah's sudden politeness towards, but didn't say any more than 'thank you'.

Caroline found Klaus in Henrik's room and stood silently by the door as he talked to his son. It was a peculiar thing to watch and listen to, but Caroline couldn't help but smile to herself. Klaus Mikaelson was a great father.

"You are welcome to come in, love." Klaus called from inside the room and Caroline stepped out of her hiding spot besides the open door.

"I didn't want to interrupt anything." Caroline explained with a small smile and glanced down at Henrik, who looked away shyly. They hadn't seen each other since Henrik had yelled at her and the boy was clearly regretting his words. "I just wanted to tell you that I'm going back to Marie's now."

Klaus watched her for a long moment before giving a small nod in response. As Klaus turned to look at his son once more Caroline stood in the room indecisively; uncertain of whether he had any more to say. She knew what he felt about her idea of going back to her hotel room, but he hadn't really tried to talk her out of it. With a small sigh Caroline backed out of the room and had almost made it to the hall when a small voice called her back.

"Caroline?" Henrik's voice sounded from the bed and Caroline smiled as she carefully walked towards the bed. He was almost hidden underneath his covers as Caroline sat down her knees besides the bed, but his face slowly peeked out to look at her. "I'm sorry for yelling at you. I didn't mean to."

"It's okay, sweetie. We're good, okay?" Caroline reassured the boy as she briefly stroked his hair and wide smile spread on Henrik's lips.

"Okay."

She watched him for a moment longer before quickly glancing at Klaus, who was staring back at her. Caroline then got to her feet and muttered a "goodnight" before moving to leave once more.

"Caroline?" Henrik called again and the blonde narrowed her eyes at Klaus as if he was the one preventing her from leaving; making him smile innocently. It didn't look innocent at all, though. "Will you look under my bed for monsters?"

Henrik's question surprised Caroline so much that she almost laughed, but a sharp look from Klaus made her shut up. The boy's father was the most feared creature in the world and yet he was afraid for what could be lurking under his bed.

"What about your dad?" Caroline asked as sat down by the bed once more, but Henrik frantically shook his head.

"He doesn't believe me since he doesn't think I'm afraid of anything, so I can't see the monsters." Klaus explained tiredly and he had clearly been through this argument with Henrik hundreds of times.

"Can I tell you a secret?" Caroline whispered loudly to Henrik, who completely crawled out from under his covers. "It's a good thing to be afraid sometimes. Actually, it's a superpower. Because when you're afraid your heart starts pumping really fast and suddenly you're stronger and cleverer. Fear isn't a bad thing. And you know, even your dad is afraid sometimes."

Henrik looked at her with wide eyes before nodding and then slowly moved to the edge of the bed. Caroline watched intently as the boy fearfully looked underneath his bed and she almost jumped out her skin where Klaus suddenly whispered into her ear.

"That's rubbish, sweetheart. I'm not afraid of anything."

"Oh, shut up!" Caroline whispered back as she softly pushed him away and they both laughed.

"There wasn't anything." Henrik told as he returned safely to his bed and Caroline sent him a proud smile.

"And it doesn't matter if there's nothing under the bed so long as you know it's okay to be afraid of it." Caroline replied with a soft smile that made the boy nod in understanding. She was about to stand up from her spot when Henrik pinned her without another question.

"Can you sing for me?" he asked with his blue eyes staring at her pleadingly and it didn't take long before Caroline gave in with a small smile.

"Sure. But then you have to sleep." Caroline said as she pointed down at the boy, who was making himself comfortable. Caroline turned to look at Klaus, who was now standing by the door, and he watched her curiously. She remembered – with embarrassment – that he had heard sing before but that was under completely different circumstances.

It took her a moment to think of a song to sing before she settled on a more unconventional one. It wasn't really a lullaby, but there was something about the lyrics that seemed to fit their situation quite well.

"There was a time I used to look into my father's eyes." Caroline sang softly as she smiled down at Henrik and he closed his eyes contentedly. "In a happy home I was a king, I had a golden throne. Those days are gone, now the memory's on the wall. I hear the songs from the places where I born."

Deciding to cut the song short Caroline went straight to the second verse and she suddenly became very aware of Klaus' presence in the room.

"There was a time I met a girl of a different kind. We ruled the world, I thought I'd never lose her out of sight. We were so young, I think of her now and then. Still hear the songs reminding me of a friend. Upon a hill across a blue lake, that's where I had my first heartbreak. I still remember how it all changed."

"My father said, "Don't you worry, don't you worry, child. See heaven's got a plan for you. Don't you worry, don't you worry now." Caroline finished slowly as her voice turned into a whisper and she slowly rose to her feet. Klaus' eyes found hers as she turned around and she paused in the middle of the room before walking through the door with a calming breath.

"Goodnight." Caroline said in a low voice as Klaus closed the door to Henrik's room and they stood in the hall in silence. Unable to look at him Caroline turned to leave, but stopped when Klaus grabbed her hand.

"Caroline," he started hesitantly, but instead of listening Caroline stepped forward and pressed a soft kiss to his lips.

"I'll see you tomorrow."

With those words Caroline turned around and disappeared down the hall; leaving Klaus to stare after her.

The lyrics are from "Don't you worry child" by Swedish House Mafia.
