159. Curtain Closing

The curtain was closing on their lives,
dampening the colour in their world

But they could see each other
even as the rest of it vanished
into the gloom.

They could reach for each other
and even though there was
an eternity in between
they could touch
and remember their embrace
as the curtain closed

And they lay together, in death,
shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand –
together, even then,
oblivious to the tears that fell around
because they were happy
elsewhere
and together
regardless of all the people
they'd left behind.

They couldn't even say they'd managed it
though they'd tried: to create a peaceful world –

That, and to never know the heartbreak
of dying without their love.
