They'd seemed so far apart at first
they'd never become friends
was what was thought –
not even enemies, but distant figures
with a wall of animosity in between

Like the class clown
and the studious star pupil
who would never turn

But they clashed, because she did turn,
heard his words
and he saw her run in tears

And the next time they met face to face,
tears and blood and admiration
had sent that wall away.
