A Larger Poetry Collection
204. His Birthday

His birth is the last happy thing they recall
before the blood spills forth:
that sodden day that gave them victory
but also
so much loss

But still they can all smile
because not everything is gone:
some remain

And even though he finds his birthday sadder
as the times go by, everyone else is able
to smile a little more
because he's there: that happy thing
before the flood of blood.
