CHAPTER 14

Nothing much has changed in Tree Hill. The same old people, same old places, some would even think that the leaves of trees are in the same position. Nathan looked around Tree Hill for the first time in three months. He had been to camp for the whole of summer and if he was completely honest with himself, he kind of missed his home town.

High Flyers was great. He spent all his time focusing on improving his skills and he knew that he was a lot better at the game now. Despite missing Tree Hill, he still dreaded coming back mainly because he wasn't ready to face the drama that was lying ahead with Haley. Now that he knew that she was back, he didn't know what to make of it. A part of him wanted to see her but he also didn't want to see her. How twisted is that?

She tried calling him the first two weeks at camp. He avoided all her calls because he wasn't ready for it yet. After that, the calls suddenly stopped. He would be lying if he said that he wasn't disappointed by that. Although he wasn't ready to talk to her, it still comforted him to know that she thinks about him. As if she knew what was going on with him, she started writing letters to him. He never responded to them but the letters kept coming. He contemplated just throwing them away but he couldn't bring himself to do that so he kept all of them with him after reading them. Thinking of Haley took him back to the day she returned.

Flashback

"What are you doing here?"

"I want you back Nathan. I left the tour".

Out of all the things that could come out of her, he didn't expect that. There was a huge part of him that just wanted to forget everything that happened between them and just kiss her senseless. But he refrained from it thinking about the hell he has been through this past month. Nathan had never trusted anyone so much his entire. He had given his all and she just shattered it with the blink of an eye. That's not something he can get over so fast. "Haley", he took a moment to gather his thoughts; "you can't just say something like this after a month of silence".

Haley was disappointed by his response but it's a lot better than what she had expected. When she pictured this moment, Nathan would always yell expletives at her and slam the door in her face. "I know it's not fair but-"

"Nathan! The police called, it's your father", said a panicked Deb who brushed past him and Haley and made her way to her car. She turned around and noticed Haley for the first time, "Haley?"

"Mom what happened?" the combination of police and his father didn't sound good to him.

Deb immediately turned to Nathan, "there's been a fire at the dealership".

Both Nathan and Haley gasped in shock. Nathan had no idea how to digest this news. His mind was in overdrive as he made his way to the car. Haley stood awkwardly at their front porch, not knowing where she stood in all this.

"Haley", called Deb, "you should come too". Although this was the same girl who broke her son's heart, she knew that Haley could provide the comfort that Deb never could in a situation like this. The car ride was filled with tension and awkwardness and a whole lot of silence.

Once they reached the destination they were shocked to silence. The whole dealership was up in flames and firemen were doing the pretty hard job of putting them off. There was no sign of Dan anywhere. Nathan didn't know how he felt about it. He didn't like his father very much but Dan was still his father. Dan didn't deserve to die; not like this; not in a fire.

Deb walked away to find out what had happened to her husband leaving him and Haley to stare at the chaos in front of them. Haley's hand brushed against his and as if it was the most natural thing, he felt thankful that she was standing beside him. Feeling the strength of her presence, he held her hand and interlaced their fingers.

Haley was kind of thrilled by this although she was feeling kind of guilty given the circumstances. She looked over at him but he was still staring ahead. She could see the tense set of his jaws and knew that he was having the hardest time taking it all in. she wished she could take him away from all this but she couldn't, so she just let him hold her hand.

A few hours later

After witnessing a terrible accident and a long visit to the hospital, the three of them returned back to the Scott mansion. Haley was feeling quite uncomfortable and had wanted to go back to her home but Deb insisted that it was late she should stay here for the night. Deb suggested that on purpose because she knew that the two kids had some issues to resolve. Nathan showed Haley to the guest bedroom the tension still ever present.

"So..." he didn't know what else to say. His mind was jumbled up with the numerous things going on.

Haley took a deep breath and faced him, mentally facing an ugly conversation. "I'm sorry about your Dad". She had to start with something. Dan was in the hospital pertaining to severe burns on his back and shoulders but he'll survive.

"It's fine as long as he's alright".

"I miss you", she just wanted to put it out there.

"Haley that's not fair" he cut her off "you can't just come in here and say that".

"Why not? It's the truth".

"Are you sure about that?" his voice was rising now, "because last time I saw you, your views were quite different".

Haley refrained from matching her tone with his. Two people yelling and out of control is never a good thing. "Haven't you ever done something that you could take back?"

"Well too bad you can't, why are you really here Haley?"

Wow he really is pissed. "I came here because I didn't want anything without you", she said as her voice softened, "all the attention and spotlight couldn't cover up for missing you".

Nathan closed his eyes momentarily soaking in her words. He wanted to hear these words so many times over the past month but now that he was putting his life back together, she shows up. Her timing couldn't be more disastrous. "Do you know have any idea what I've been through?" his voice was soft and the pain was evident in them. Haley kept silent so he continued, "How would you feel if the only person who you trusted betrayed you? If the one person who you care about most in the world hurt you in the worst possible way? That's how I felt Haley and I don't think I'll ever get ever something like this".

By this time Haley had taken a few steps until she was right in front of him with merely inches between them. Her eyes were moist and her throat felt stiff. She tentatively placed her hand over the side of his face. His eyes instantly closed by the sudden contact. "I'm really sorry", by now her tears were freely flowing, "I don't know what else to tell you other than that I love you". Nathan's eyes were still closed. Feeling a little brave, she moved forward and placed her lips against his.

Nathan suddenly opened his eyes with shock when he felt her lips on his but instinctively closed them as he got lost in the kiss. One of his hands held her face as the other snaked around her waist. He pushed her forward so that she was flush against him. When he felt her tongue skim his upper lip he opened his mouth to her. The atmosphere was getting heated by the moment, both lost in the familiar touch of each other.

Then all too quickly, images of Chris and Haley flashed in his mind and it felt like a bucket of cold water was poured on him. He pulled away from her instantly as everything came back to him. "Haley I can't..." he tried to catch his breath again. "I can't do this right now".

She just nodded, still trying to catch her breath.

"I leave for High Flyers".

This caught her attention. "Oh", she felt her heart sink, "How long will you be gone?"

"The whole summer", the idea of camp seems a little unattractive at the moment. He'd be lying if he said that Haley had nothing to do with his sudden change of heart.

Haley swallowed the lump in her throat. She remembered Nathan applying for camp and of course he's get in. someone of his talent definitely deserves it. "Okay. Congratulations on that", and a part of her was very happy that he had got in, although she preferred the circumstances were different.

The look on her face made him want to kiss her worries away but he stayed well away. "I leave in the morning, you should get some rest".

She looked around feeling uncomfortable by the change in the subject. "This really feels awkward, I think I'll call Lucas or Brooke I don't-"

"No Haley, it's too late anyway, stay", he was avoiding looking into her eyes, "Good night" he made a move to walk out of the room.

"Nathan", she called out and this time he looked at her directly, "I'm back for good", she said with determination.

Nathan just nodded at that. His heart started beating at a faster rate by her confession but he couldn't let her know that. So he just left to finish packing the rest of his stuff.

The next day, he left without seeing her, afraid that he would change his mind about leaving.

End of flashback

He never responded to any of her letters but with each passing moment, the temptation to call her was getting stronger. His rage was the only thing keeping him in check. He was at the river court still shooting around his mind still a little preoccupied.

"Hey", called out a familiar voice. He was not ready for this yet but his time was up. He turned around to come face to face with Haley. He took in her appearance in a yellow tank top and dark jeans. She looked more gorgeous than ever. Her dark hair was longer now and ended somewhere near her lower back.

"Hey", his voice was toned down. He wanted to hide the fact that his heartbeat has risen in pace. It has been so long since they have been intimate. There were a lot of girls who showed interest towards him during summer but he never even acknowledged them. In a strange way it felt like he would be cheating on her.

"You never told me you were coming back", she shuffled her feet nervously.

"Yeah I reached today morning", he turned away from her and towards the hoop again.

"I wanted to talk-"

"Haley, I can't do this right now".

"What? You can't talk to me?"

Nathan just scoffed.

"We have some really big decisions to make Nathan".

"What decisions?" he asked incredulously. "We are over, you made that pretty clear Haley and now what?"

"Now I think-"

"Oh so now since it's convenient for you, you want us to get back together?" he scoffed. "Well I am tired of you taking all the shots in our relationship. I mean I understand you have done a lot of things for me over the past but that doesn't give you-"

"Nathan", she tried to interrupt but he was on a roll. His voice was getting louder with every word.

"-the right to hurt me the way you did. Do you have any idea-"

"I'm pregnant", she shouted, not able to take his rant anymore. That seemed to do the trick, since he just stood still, eyes held wide. He was just staring at her, shocked to silence. "Nathan say something", she all but whispered but the silence continued at the other end. This definitely changes things between them but was it for the better or worse?

Ta-da! What do you think? I was always bothered by the timing of the Naley pregnancy on the show. Thought it would be more dramatic if I jumble it up a bit.

Please review Let me know if you guys wanna add your ideas to it! And like I promised, I started bringing in the real changes.
