Part 47 Surprising Messages
Chief Master Sergeant Philip Evreux of the Royal Marines message arrived at the Council House/Headquarters in London. The secured transmission was sent as soon as the message of Janet's survival came through. The news would help clam a very upset council and it would also ease the worries of some of the elder watchers. Edmund Giles wheeled his chair into the communications room. He could not help the smile that came over him. He looked at the communications director and said. "Tell Philip we will arrange everything here. It may be wisest if they bring Janet and Cassandra directly here. It seems Henry is as wary of the National Intelligence Division as we are. You would think with his position he would have those fools under control by now."
The communications director David Ward nodded. "Yes sir I would think so but perhaps he has no clear idea who is behind the corruption. Henry always was one who liked proof of something."
"Yes, perhaps. I suppose that is logical. Then perhaps it is well he never heard of my demise of he would never believe I was alive now."
The younger watcher grinned at that. Sir Edmund Philip Giles survival had been a rare fluke. He had a magical amulet on his person and used it to escape the explosion at the headquarters of the watchers council. However he had been injured badly and the place he had been transported to had only a few witches and minimal medical facilities. Due to the nature of the attacks and the uncertainty of the situation advanced medical help had not been immediate. He had paid dearly for that. While he was not a complete paraplegic he would never walk long distances again and he needed the chair for easier mobility.
The fact that all believe he was dead had saved him from assassins sent to eliminate any remaining council members. He had hidden until his son had already taken over the council. In fact outside of the coven only his queen and her consort had known of his survival something his wife had still not totally forgiven him for. However he had stayed dead as long as he had to keep her, Dee and Rupert safe. It had not been an easy choice but the seer Magdalene had warned it would be necessary to save his son and families lives. So he had stayed dead.
Not that he had honestly had a choice at first. He had been in a coma for two months before he awoke and by that time Edmund Giles had been dead and buried. Now he was still Edmund but he went by Darius Edmund Giles Black a distant cousin. He had even remarried his beloved wife. Fortunately or unfortunately the injuries he received had caused him to eventually need extensive plastic surgery and rehabilitation.
So no one who was not on or connected to the council knew he was alive. In fact only a handful of people knew the truth outside of his family, David had been told as his family had saved him. David's mother Hannah was a powerful earth witch who had once been very close to a younger Edmund. Her mother Magdalene had not allowed the match saying that while they loved each other they were not each other's soul mates. Both had railed against it but in the end their sense of duty forced them into different matches. However Hannah had not wanted him to be in danger so she had gifted him with an amulet that went on his watch. Its runes would bring him to her if he was every badly hurt. She had some medical training and she would not risk the man she loved. Well time went on and both actually found Magdalene was indeed correct their matches ended up being their soul mate. However first loves are never forgotten and they remained close friends. That friendship saved Edmund's life. They had been close since they were children and that friendship had molded their entire lives.
He had taken David who was six month younger under his wing after Rupert left as the young man loved the Council. Sometimes Edmund could almost think of David as his own, not that he did not love his son but, David was what he had hoped for a son to follow in his footsteps. He sighed and pushed that thought aside it was not fair to compare the men. Because as much as he liked David the boy no man was not his, he was merely the son of his first love.
David watched Edmund Giles with care. He worried for his mentor. Of course he knew that his mother still had a soft spot for the watcher despite his choosing duty over their love. He even understood why Edmund made the choices he did. Hell he would have made the same ones. Of course he still wanted to kick his half brother in the ass for all the pain he had caused but, he knew that Edmund was a harsh taskmaster.
Hell he'd been hard to deal with as a mentor. As a father well he shuttered and got why Rupert had gone all Ripper. He was just glad he was the younger son and that his father never recalled the one night of drunken debauchery he and his mother had gotten up to. Of course it had been after learning that he had inherited the title and the council seat. His father had been grieving his own family and so had his mother. The two of them fell into each other's arms. The result was he and his twin sister Dara.
Of course his "Adopted Father" had never known or cared as he had adored Hannah. Hell David had four other siblings so he knew that his parent's truly did love each other. He understood why his mother never told the truth and he agreed. He loved David Ward as his father and he loved his mother and was in many ways's Edmund's opposite loving and indulgent to all his children.
So David just wisely took his birth father on as a mentor. He loved the old bastard but, he would never openly claim him as it would be too complicated. However he would keep him safe.
"Dara said she can have the papers ready in an hour Uncle Ed-Darius." Recalling that he was supposed to use the man's new name he had to keep him safe using the wrong name in the wrong company would cause complications.
"Good let your mother know she will want to check Janet over. I have to call Janelle and let her know about Janet and Cassandra coming here. I am certain she will want to have them stay with us at Brookes House. Oh and David call the PM and warn him about this situation we may need some cover. It is the least I can do for Rupert. He does not need to deal with the red tape this may cause."
"Yes sir, I'll do that at once. Shall I contact the coven as well? If Ethan Rayne is returning he may need some counseling. Plus Cassandra sounds powerful as well maybe as much as the Red Witch. Maybe she's a bit dangerous too."
Edmund snorted that was like saying the Red Witch might be a little dangerous. Well maybe not so much now that she was mated and paired but it never hurt to have her check in and work with the coven too. It also made him think that a younger Ethan might need guidance as well, they had failed the young man and it would not do to make the same mistakes twice. "Yes, please do, we should also have them check his "son" just as a precaution."
"Yes sir I can see your point."
Edmund nodded and headed out to call his wife. He had mended fences but, he still was working on letting her know he did not deliberately try to hurt her. Sometimes he hated the choices he had made but one thing he never regretted was marrying his wife. Or at least now he did not. The Seer was right she was his soul mate. He may have loved David's mother and a part of him still did but Janelle was the very air he breathed. He would not mess up again. If that meant contacting her a dozen times a day and letting her know what he could well so be it. Rupert was right about one thing it was past time they all cared for their families as much as they did the Council. Besides she'd skin him if he did not warn her to have the house perfect for a family visit. He had to admit he was looking forward to it. Because he could hardly wait to surprise his son; Rupert only knew his mother had remarried not that he was the husband. This prank was a fair trade for all the crap his son had put him through in his youth. Of course he had to be careful or his son's own mate might make his demise reality. Buffy Summers was one tough lady he was not about to anger her even for a joke.

Part 48
Baal had his troops spread out across the planet. It was a rich world and if he gained noting else he would have a new base with plentiful resources. The planetary scans showed it was devoid of sentient life though other animal species existed in abundance. The rich vegetation and large masses of water would be perfect for colonization and creating a large agricultural center. While many Goauld loved to harvest mineral wealth and populations one thing Baal had always done was care for the land and even those who were his subjects. He was not by any means a kind master but neither was he overly cruel. He was at heart a man of the land. He enjoyed watching farms grow and prosper. He blamed that on his host. The host was now totally under his control but, the host had been a farmer with a deep love and respect for his lands and his goddess. Sadly it had rubbed off on Baal. He would never admit it but seeing the crops grow and flourish while children ran among the fields brought him great joy. He loved watching craftsmen create ornate furnishings out of exotic woods and stone. In many ways his favorite possessions were created by hand and were not like many Tauri believed made of gold. Yes he had his public rooms decorated as gaudily as any other Goauld overlord but his most private quarters were far simpler in style and taste, the Tauri called it minimalist. He took a long drink from the bottle his Jaffa servant brought. The water was cold and clear refreshingly so. Yes this new world would become a perfect back up base. He would immediately bring settlers here. He considered his options with care. He wanted a well rounded group preferably some that might need the challenge of taming a world. Unlike many of his kind he did not kill for pleasure. He would rather find creative ways to keep his trouble makers under control. Making them settle in a new untamed world would work quite well. Of course it had its risks as well. The key was to balance the risk reward as he did not want to help create a colony that would openly rebel. He considered it with care and decided that this world would be a testing ground. He would staff it with young Jaffa eager to prove them like Trent and with settlers who needed to be busy so they could not cause trouble. Yes it was a good balance. He called his first prime to him to begin his plans. With time this could be a showplace world as it was perfect and unspoiled.
Janet was glad to be back among family and friends however she knew this reunion could not and should not last overly long as they were now firmly behind enemy lines again. She broke her hug with Cassandra and faced both SG-1 and Rupert's children the Scooby's. "All right now that we have the reunion resolved we should make plans to return to Earth. We can't stay here safely and frankly I am tired and want to rest. However, given my new status I believe we need to discuss my options with care. I cannot safely return to the SGC."
Sam and Daniel immediately began to protest. Teal'c simply raised his brow already having come to that conclusion.
Janet raised her hands to stop the protests."Sam, Daniel I can't return, the NID would like nothing better than to get a hold of me and Eugenie now. They will claim I am a security threat to the base because of my unique access and they will also claim I have been compromised because by now the fact that I have dual citizenship will also have become public record. It would have to be so that Rupert could take Cassandra home."
"Yeah about that," Jack said. "You trusted a stranger over us? Why what have we done to betray you?"
Janet took a deep breath cut by Jack's harsh words.
Giles and Ethan as one moved to Janet's side both clearly angry. They saw no betrayal in her trusting family over the military in fact given both their pasts it made perfect sense.
"Well maybe the fact that you are a first rate git had something to do with it." Ethan said. "I mean you shot the guardian Janet chose. You could have killed Rupert. Now I admit to making his life interesting at times but, I never tried to kill him he always at least had even odds of survival."
Rupert snorted at that. 'He might debate the even odds but, he had survived and expecting Ethan to not try something after that first time was all on him really because he knew his friend was angered and out to prank the hell out of him. His mistake was forgetting how lethal Ethan liked to play which was really on him.'
Janet's head jerked up and looked at Rupert for the first time and noted he was wounded. She had assumed that they had run into the Goauld and that he had been hurt there not that Jack had shot her cousin.
She moved to check his wounded arm her frown forming as she saw how close she had come to losing her cousin.
Jack blushed feeling a little remorseful but held his ground."I was protecting Cassie."
"No Jack you were acting all territorial and alpha male." Cassandra replied she moved to her mother and families side. Jack winced when she did not call him uncle.
Yep it was official Cassie was pissed off at him. He began to say something but then wisely chose to shut his mouth at the angry look Cassie was giving him.
"You tried to shoot Uncle Rupert and I'm not sure I can forgive that easily." Cassie said with a hard look."You did not even try to listen to me and that hurt. I have never lied to you. I trusted you but you would not listen to anything I had to say. Hell Makepeace was more attentive and listened better."
Once more Jack wisely chose to keep his mouth shut pointing out that both Cassie and Janet had lied about her powers was not going to help matters at all. He did wince at the shot about Colonel Makepeace yeah that one stung deeply but sadly Cassie was right.
"You shot my family Jack!" Janet all but shouted rounding on the colonel with her eyes darkening in anger. Power flared in the room but Eugenie tried to exert calm and peace. 'Easy remain calm Janet allow him time to explain.'
'I don't want too.'
Eugenie knew that Janet losing her temper would not be wise she continued to speak softly to her sister. 'Please Janet if you lose control someone could be injured.'
'I'd like to injure Colonel O'Neill.'
'You are a doctor and his friend, he may have over reacted but it was in defense of Cassandra, you would have shot Nerti how could he have done less.'
'Damn it you have to be all logical' Janet replied their lightening fast mental conversation over now.
"All right Colonel please tell / explain me just why you shot the my cousin a diplomat and the man I entrusted my daughter to, and it had better be good because frankly shooting you right now seems like a good idea as I don't have any big needles available to stick in your ass. But unless it is a good one plan on them being in your future for a long time."
Jack winced 'when you put it that way it sounded kind of bad and ill thought out which sadly it was.' "I over reacted."
"Yeah think." Cassie snarked gaining her a dark look from all the adults but she was really not happy at the moment so she simply shrugged.
'She will fit right in with the others.' Giles thought though it may not be as necessary now unless of course we have to take Janet back to the U.K. for safety.'
"Yeah well he was threatening to kill everyone of course I over reacted. Hell he and his so called "Children" had the president and I thought he had been compromised. I had to act to protect him and the base. In fact if I am being totally honest here I still think the commander and chief has been compromised or is at least somehow connected to those people and maybe even to you. What's with all those fancy swanky rings? I am betting you did not get them out of some cracker jacks box and they are all different too."
Janet considered that for a moment and then conceded he may have only acted on what he knew. She of course knew the gang was likely to threaten first but, the USAF and O'Neill did not. Now of course he had to bring up the watcher's rings something they really could not talk about.
"Whatever you think or believe Colonel the president has not been compromised. He merely had another association before he took office. The ring he wears denotes the office he held at that time though he is not currently active. Or at least I do not believe so." Janet answered. She looked at Giles for clarification and he shook his head no.
"No Janet he is not currently active and has not been since he first ran for public office. He was protected enough by the secret service and several of our operatives that we had no worries about his safety at least not until we entered the SGC."
"Yeah I mean he is their commander and chief so he should have been safe enough." Xander said adding his two cents worth. "I mean who'd have thought one of his own would try to kill him."
Jack glared."I was not after the president."
"You could have fooled us, plus given the situation had Giles been killed what do you think would have happened?" Xander said."I mean it felt like a set up to us and I can bet the slayers were oh so not happy. Buffy and Faith kept them in check but had Rupert been killed well…let's just say everyone connected to our being there would have had a very short life expectancy Secret Service Agents would have merely been collateral damage. All because you got stupid and trigger happy. If Buffy and Faith had not done so I would have, Rupert Giles is not an expendable individual he matters to a lot of us, just so we are clear his life means more to us then the president's and we would be within our rights under the treaty to eliminate any who harmed him."
Jack wanted to snark but something in the young man's eyes stopped him. He knew that look it was the same one he had when he was stating a cold hard fact. Instead for once he was silent.
"Look it's over we need to skate. This world seems nice and all but we have to get home. We have a problem to deal with and it won't be solved by us arguing here. The issue was to rescue Janet which she seems to have done all on her own. Which by the way is great, but we need to go before we all find ourselves knee deep in snakes." Buffy said.
"What she said." Jack said agreeing with Buffy and glad of the subject change. He would have to work on mending fences but now was not the time.
"Ethan let's get out of here. Buffy and the colonel are right we have more important matters to attend to. We can deal with the family issues back on Earth. However I do believe we should head home as in the UK? Can this ship get us there?"
"Yes, it can, and I agree it's safest for Janet and Cassie. Maybe you should call your friends and see if they can help with the transaction and see if maybe they can ah…"
"Yes Ethan I'll see if we cannot get you a second or one hundredth chance." Giles said rolling his eyes.
His friend chuckled and they all moved to the ship it was time to go.
Ethan looked forward to driving his friend crazy. He grinned and Giles groaned wondering if anyone would mind him knocking Ethan out and leaving him for Baal. I mean it could end up with both being ….out of action.
