Author's Note: And here we are again; part one of another two-parter (sort of, albeit much lighter and fluffier than last time I did this). As always, I do hope that you enjoy, and please leave reviews or fav/follow if you are so inclined.
"You have got to be kidding me…"
Weiss Schnee, Heiress to the Schnee Dust Company, first in her class, and RWBY's own resident work-a-holic, was sitting down to lunch – at the Summer Blossom Café of all places – with the Faunus stow away and petty thief that they'd all met before the Vytal festival. Now, she could deal with the fact that he was a Faunus – she'd spent enough time with Blake and Mina to get past her learned suspicion on that front – and against her better judgment, she could also deal with the fact that he was a petty criminal, seeing as Blake was willing to vouch for him. What she could not deal with was that she was doing all of this because she'd lost a round of go-fish!
"Oh come on Weiss, it'll be fun!" Yang insisted as she shoved Weiss into the corner booth opposite the Faunus boy, "Blind dating's a blast!"
Weiss for her part was making no effort to conceal her annoyance as the brawler tried to manhandle the stubbornly unmoving Heiress into her seat, "The whole idea is simply absurd!"
"Well too bad, you're doin' it," Yang smirked, "A bet's a bet,"
"I still think that you cheated,"
"Can you prove it?"
"…No…" Weiss grumbled, but added nothing more.
"Relax; he looks like a nice guy, doesn't he? And if you still don't like him after this, you never have to see him again! That's the beauty of it!" Yang proclaimed.
"Uh… I'm right here…" the boy interjected with a raised eyebrow.
Yang shot him a look, "Look, you have no idea how hard it was to get Vale's most eligible bachelorette to come out here for one date; don't get your hopes up,"
"Uhuh…"
"WHAT DID YOU CALL ME, XIAO LONG?" Weis demanded angrily.
"Whoops, gotta go, bye! Oh, and your waitress will be arriving shortly," Yang added as she departed with a massive 'I am so getting pictures of this' smirk.
Exasperated, the Heiress muttered, "I suppose if nothing else, this ought to teach me never to make wagers on undefined terms… but seriously, of all the places, a maid café? Perhaps I wouldn't know, but this sort of place doesn't strike me as a date spot…"
"So this is a date-,"
"We are doing lunch, understand? Nothing. More."
"Yes Ma'am…" The boy gulped. There was just something about the angry Heiress that tended to make one forget that she wasn't the biggest one in the room.
Weiss sighed, calming somewhat, "I'm sorry, this probably isn't your fault, I suppose… What was your name again?"
He scratched the back of his head nervously, "Sun… Sun Wukong…"
"Hmm…" the Heiress studied him appraisingly, "Well my name is Weiss Schnee, and now that we've dispensed with the introductions, I suppose that this is where we 'chat'…"
"You don't like me, do you?"
"Don't take it personally; I don't like anyone until experience advises otherwise," Weiss answered flatly.
"So…" Sun searched for something else to talk about while they waited to be served, "This your first date with a Faunus…?"
"This is not a date," Weiss insisted, not looking up from her menu, "But yes – I've never dated, actually, Faunus or otherwise,"
"Oh…" this probably wasn't the time to mention his own flirtatious habits, so he changed the subject, "So… when you said your name was 'Weiss Schnee,' did you mean-,"
"Yes, as in the Dust Company," Weiss confirmed with an impatient nod, "The same company on whose freighters you stowed away,"
"That whole 'stowing away' thing really bugs you, doesn't it?" He asked, wishing more and more that the waitress would come along so they could order.
"Yes, Mr. Wukong, anarchy does bother me... I think I'll have the chicken penne this time…"
"Okay…" It was another jerky shift in the subject to be sure, but Sun was visibly grateful for it all the same, "So, what's good here?"
"Everything," Weiss answered without particular interest as she flipped through the menu to look at the desserts for later, "assuming that you can afford it,"
"What do you mean? It can't be- Ohm my God…"
"Are you looking at the parfaits?" Weiss guessed.
Sun shook his head, paling somewhat, "thirty Lien… for a slice of strawberry shortcake?"
"If that bothers you, then I suggest that you don't look at the tiramisu…"
"Please tell me the tip is included in these prices…" The boy further paled as he looked over more of the menu.
"I'm afraid not," Weiss replied dryly, "The chef is just that good." After a pause and a deep breath though, she added, "but you're not really paying for the food in a place like this, are you?"
"Why, whatever do you mean, Mistress?" Mina interrupted as she approached the table, a smirk to rival one of Yang's most massive on her face, "Certainly you are not insinuating that this fine establishment is some house of ill-repute?"
"Wow… Are all the waitresses this hot?" Sun stared, wide eyed.
Mina chuckled, but Weiss rolled her eyes, "Scrape your jaw off the floor; she's taken, so don't get any ideas. Oh, and try not to be such a pig…"
"Monkey,"
"…Right…" The Heiress sighed again, getting the feeling that it wouldn't be for the last time that day, "I'll try to remember that…"
"Hey, you're the one who said this wasn't a date," Sun pointed out defensively, "There's no reason that I can't look…"
"By all means, Mr. Wukong; it would be a shame if you didn't get your money's worth…" Mina cut back in, "Now, would my Master and Mistress care for a drink?"
"Coffee," Weiss replied disinterestedly.
"Milk-," Weiss kicked her lunch partner under the table, and after the subsequent grunt of pain he changed his mind, "…Coffee's good too…"
Mina left Weiss and Mr. Wukong's table with their rather simple drink orders committed to memory and a knowing little smile on her face. While this had not been exactly what she'd had in mind when she laid out her intentions to Blake, who then in turn enlisted Miss Xiao Long's help, present circumstances would do nicely. If nothing else, Weiss was out having lunch and more importantly, not stressing herself out over her studies or responsibilities. It had been an odd chain of decision-making that had led to this point though.
Having the Heiress do lunch was one thing, but who with? If the whole team was in attendance, then it would be no different than normal, so both Mina and Blake had judged that a more personal occasion was in order, though this too left the question of who exactly to send unanswered. Miss Rose was out; it would be unfair to give her the wrong idea, and that aside, the whole point of this exercise was to lower Weiss' stress level, not raise her blood pressure. Blake and Ms. Xiao Long were out as well; both were helping after all, as was Miss Nikos, who was waiting to escort the Heiress to a local spa after lunch was concluded. That left, to Mina's knowledge anyway, Mr. Arc, Mr. Lie, and Miss Valkyrie. As Mr. Arc had already struck out with the Heiress several times, and was obviously (well, obviously to perhaps everyone but himself) involved with Miss Nikos, Mr. Arc was also ruled out, followed by Mr. Lie; he was polite and well-mannered to be sure, but not… fun enough for what Mina had in mind. Conversely, Miss Valkyrie was also ruled out because she was probably too much fun for the Heiress to absorb all at once unassisted…
For a while that had left Mina stumped, until Miss Xiao Long mentioned in passing – - presumably in jest – the 'monkey-boy' that Blake had met prior to the Vytal tournament. After an inquiry by Mina as to who the boy was, and a hasty and unsolicited denial of any romantic involvement whatsoever from Blake, Mina had made up her mind. This Wukong fellow wasn't perfect, she supposed, but he sounded fun enough, and a good sport besides, which was exactly what Mina had in mind for this little exercise. That much established, it was a small matter to have Blake reach the boy and offer to set him up on a blind date, whilst Miss Xiao Long was given free rein to convince Weiss to do the same. There had been some debate over whether or not the Summer Blossom was the best location to stage a date, but none involved were like to take this exercise seriously as a romantic outing, and after Mina was able to secure a generous coupon so that the whole business wouldn't bankrupt Blake's accommodating friend, that was that, and Mina was only too delighted when Blake had volunteered herself for another shift at the Summer Blossom to make sure that it went well. With any luck, her Dearest might make a habit of it…
As Mina entered the kitchen to set about retrieving a pot of coffee though, Clara pulled her aside and asked with a note of enthusiasm, "So, how is it going?"
"It is a busy day…"
"No, not that!" Clara shook her head, "That girl out at table seven! That's Weiss Schnee, isn't it? And a friend of yours if I'm not mistaken…"
"You are not," Mina grinned, volunteering no other information.
"Okay, so what's the deal? We never have girl customers! Just sweaty creeps with too much money and free time! And she's with a boy! What have you done Mina? I need gossip!"
Mina chuckled, "Weiss just needs to loosen up a bit… forget some troubles; so we set her up on a blind date…"
"You set one of the richest girls in the world up on a blind date?" Clara's jaw went slack, "And I assume by 'we' you mean that adorable girlfriend of yours and that pushy blonde…"
"Right on both counts," Mina smiled, "The boy is an acquaintance of Blake's. Now, I would be happy to tell you more later, but-,"
"Don't worry about it Mina; I've got their coffee," Blake said as she walked up holding the pot and a tray with two mugs. With the aid of her semblance, Mina could tell that she was still uncomfortable with the uniform, particularly with the shortness of the skirt, as evidenced by her constant tugging on the hem, which Mina found adorable, but Blake was managing nonetheless. Mina herself would probably wear skirts more often if she owned them – they were comfortable after all – but they were apparently too… breezy for Blake's taste.
All this aside, Mina cocked her head at the offer, "How did you-?"
"I heard as I was walking over to table four," Blake answered preemptively, "Now remember Mina, we want her to relax, not stress out, so-,"
"Yes, yes, play nice; I promise Dearest,"
With a nod, Blake headed out with the coffee in hand, leaving Clara to squeal in delight, "Awww, that's so sweet! You finish each other's sentences!"
"That is nothing Clara…" Mina teased, "We grew up very close…"
"Oh?" Clara questioned, interest piqued.
"We've shared a bet most nights since we were seven…" Mina added with a smirk, knowing how Clara would react.
"O my God, I could just die, that is so cute!" Then Clara leaned in with a conspiratorial air, "So when did you…"
Mina's smirk broadened, "Now that, Miss Schumann, is a very personal question. The sort of thing a proper lady would never-,"
"Oh save it,"
"So how'd they rope you into this?" Weiss asked her dining partner as she settled on the veal parmesan rather than the chicken penne after all, "I lost a hand of cards,"
Sun's face fell, "You lost a bet, huh?"
"Again, don't take it personally; if it helps, I'm mad at Xiao Long, not you,"
"Okay…" Sun wondered for a moment about what the safest answer was before speaking, "They didn't really have to 'rope' me into this…"
"They?"
"I mean Yang…" He swiftly corrected himself, but not fast enough to deter Weiss' suspicions, which were only encouraged when it was not Mina, but Blake who showed up with their coffee, "B-Blake!?"
"Hello Weiss," Blake tried to reply as professionally as possible, but it could not allay the mounting blush on her face. "I uh… offered to help Mina out at work today… one of the other waitresses called out so…"
"So I see…" The Heiress scrutinized Blake carefully, "I don't suppose that you had anything to do with this?" Weiss gestured toward Sun.
"Why whatever do you mean…" Blake's blush deepened with every word, "…Mistress? God, how does Mina do it?"
Weiss couldn't help a little laugh, "Don't worry, I don't need or want you to call me that,"
"Oh thank God…" Blake sighed with relief as she set down their mugs and poured the coffee, "So, have you two thought of what you are going to order?"
"Yes," Weiss answered, shooting Sun an exasperated look, "We'll start with a few extra napkins to wipe up a certain someone's drool…"
"I-I wasn't looking, I swear!"
"She's taken too, you dolt," Weiss rolled her eyes, "But as for the food, I would like the veal parmesan,"
Looking somewhat disappointed Sun added, "I'll have a club sandwich…"
"Alright-,"
"Blake, table thirteen is ready to order!" It was Mina's voice calling over as Mina herself was preoccupied taking soft drinks to table twenty.
"Right…" Blake could feel her ears droop under her bow… at least it wasn't cat-ear day… "If you'll excuse me…"
After Blake pardoned herself from their table with a slight bow, Sun looked across the table to ask, "So you know both of them?"
"Yes," she replied, not seeing the relevance.
"And they're both taken?"
"If you don't believe me, just look," Weiss pointed across the dining area, guiding his eyes to where a red-faced Blake and totally alright-with-it Mina exchanged a quick kiss, admittedly as much for showmanship's sake as affection's in that particular example, but Weiss' point was made, "See?"
"You're kidding me…" Sun seemed even more disappointed, "Always the hot ones…"
"I'll let that comment slide…" Weiss rolled her eyes, "So, tell me about yourself,"
"Huh?" Sun blinked a few times, "Oh, well… My name is-,"
"Yes, Sun Wukong, I know; tell me something else," Weiss clarified, "Like… how did you get into this?"
"Uh… Not much to tell really…" he laughed nervously, "The blonde-,"
"Yang" Weiss clarified.
"Yeah, Yang…" he nodded, though he looked even more nervous, "Yang offered to hook me up on a blind date, and since she's Blake's Beacon partner…"
"You thought you'd be set up with Blake," Weiss filled in skeptically,"
"Yeah…"
Weiss raised an eyebrow.
"We spent a weekend together out on the town!" he blurted defensively, "I thought we had something!"
"Did you ask her in that time?"
"No…"
"Honestly..."Weiss huffed, "Well, I suppose there are worse places to have lunch… although – and don't take this the wrong way – but can you afford to eat here?"
"Normally no…" he admitted, "but ya see, they hooked me up with-,"
"They who?" Weiss demanded, cutting in yet again, "And I warn you: Schnees do not like being lied to,"
Sun gulped, throwing up his hands in defeat, "Okay, okay, don't hurt me!"
"Who else set this up?"
"Blake! It was Blake who called me! When she said 'blind date' I thought I thought-,"
Weiss sighed, "Yes, I know what you thought…" she shook her head, "Good grief…"
"So… am I off the hook?" he asked hopefully.
"I suppose that you're just as much a victim of this little scheme as I am…" Weiss allowed, "You're fine… still… it would be a shame to waste the coupon that you were going to mention; we may as well eat while we're here…"
"Do you think she figured it out?" Clara asked from the doorway to the kitchen, from which she was watching Blake and Mina's odd couple with great interest, having been let in on the plot.
"Oh, she has," Mina answered with a little chuckle as she returned from delivering their plates, "Mostly…"
"And you said that lunch was phase one?" Clara asked in point of clarity.
"Of three," Mina confirmed.
"So what's phase 2?" Clara asked with a mischievous look.
"Well…" Mina began, "Phase three is a lovely girls spa trip – you are invited if you are so inclined, by the way,"
"Oh I am so there," Clara eagerly agreed, "but you still haven't answered my question…"
Mina's devious grin broadened, "The spa is most enjoyable after a hard day's work, yes?"
"NEVER AGAIN! Do you hear me, Mina? Weiss Schnee does not waitress! Especially at a maid café!" Weiss was fuming as she, Blake, Mina, and Clara took their leave of the Summer Blossom later that afternoon, "And why would you set me up on a blind date!?"
"Well technically-,"
"The card game was a set-up, Mina; Blake told me how Yang marked the cards!"
"Very well, guilty as charged," Mina laughed, "but hear me out; you enjoyed the meal, did you not?"
"I suppose," Weiss grumbled, "I might come here more often if it was a more tasteful establishment and-,"
"Sorry, tasting's extra," Clara jibed, and she and Mina burst into laughter, whereas Blake reddened like a beat.
"Ugh!" Weiss rubbed her temples in frustration, "Even if I admit that the food is good, that doesn't explain why you dragged me into the back room and made me wear one of those… those obscene outfits! I swear, I don't know what I'll do if pictures of me wearing that end up on the internet!"
"But on the bright side," Clara spoke again past a barely contained fit of giggles, "As long as you wear the outfit, you can treat the customers like dirt and they love it! I mean, that sort of thing's usually Lizzie's shtick, but you definitely made it work~"
"The customers were all deviants…" Weiss continued to gripe.
"Yes, but they're well-paying deviants~"
"I'm heading back to Beacon!"
"But Weiss…" Mina reached out and caught Weiss's wrist as she turned to make for the airship station, "This was… all my plan… I apologize; I thought that a new experience might cheer you up… but I can see that it had the opposite effect…"
Weiss halted, "Mina…"
"However," Mina brightened, "I just know that you will enjoy what I have in mind next…"
Weiss let out one more long sigh, "I appreciate that you're trying to help me but-,"
"It's a spa trip~"
"…No more waitressing?"
"Not unless you want to…" Mina replied with a smirk.
"Never again,"
"Blake said that too last week too" Clara chimed in.
