Edward slurped noisily on his drink, the straw sucking in nothing but air. He sighed, unfolding his legs and checking the time on the dashboard again.
"Roy, they're a half hour late."
In the driver's seat beside him, Roy was finally beginning to look a little tense about their current situation. After all, the photographers were supposed to meet them at the arbor at 2:00, and the digital readout now claimed it was 2:34. "I'm sure it's just traffic or something, Ed."
"But shouldn't they have called ahead?"
"Probably," Roy sighed in defeat. "But they aren't just going to bail out on us, we're customers. They want our money, so they'll either make it or end up calling and telling us what the problem was, and that we'll have to reschedule."
"You have so much faith in people," Edward huffed, sliding ever further down in his seat. "You know, we still have to address some more invitations when we get home. Think of how many we could have gotten done if we knew they would be late…"
"Don't be so fussy," Roy chided, running his fingers through Ed's bangs. "You're so upset all the time now. What's wrong?"
"I'm just getting nervous," Edward mumbled, turning his face away. "I mean…the wedding is in two months. And I know we have mostly everything planned out, it's just…I want to make sure everything is perfect. It would be just like me to get in some boneheaded accident and fuck up the most important day of my life."
The car was silent for a moment, before Roy patted his thigh, murmuring, "Get over here."
Pouting lightly, Ed climbed over the cup holders and, with no little difficulty, avoided the steering wheel, settling into place on Roy's lap and resting his head in the crook of the man's neck. "Now," Roy continued gently, voice thrumming with proximity, "what makes you think you could possibly ruin our wedding?"
"It wouldn't be the first thing I messed up," Edward responded.
"Yeah, well, everyone messes things up. Besides, you being there is what's going to make the wedding for me."
Smiling despite his somber mood, Ed still argued, "Yeah, but it's just…okay, say I don't even do anything. But the only people who know I'm wearing a dress are the team. Everyone else is going to be shocked. I don't…"
"I should have known that's what this was all about," Roy breathed, pressing his face into Edward's hair. "You know, if it's upsetting you that much, it's not too late to get you a tux."
"No! No, I don't—I don't want a tux, I told you that before. And I mean it. At the very least, the look on your face is going to be priceless." Ed grinned briefly at the thought. "I guess I'm just scared. I'm not used to putting myself out there like that, you know?"
"I know, but if you're happy with it, you can do it. I know you're nervous now, but I'm sure when you're walking down the aisle, you'll be confident enough to just stab anyone who complains with a stiletto."
Snorting at the mental picture, Ed choked out, "I'm not wearing heels, actually."
"What? What else could you possibly wear with a wedding dress?" Roy asked, bewildered.
"It's a surprise. You didn't actually think I would wear high heels, did you? I'd fall!" Edward chastised, lifting his head to send a half hearted glare at the man.
"No," Roy admitted, a sheepish smile creeping up onto his face. "But I did hope."
"Dumb ass," Ed remarked, silencing Roy's response with a swift kiss. He meant to break away, but the man held him in place, and Edward found he couldn't complain. If those photo guys weren't going to show up, he was going to get something worthwhile out of this trip…
Edward jumped as a loud banging noise sounded to his right, making him jerk backwards and hit the horn. He heard laughter, and a faint buzz as Roy rolled down the window.
"Sorry, you two, but we're already late—our fault, flat tire—and we didn't want to wait for you to finish up," a man in flannel with close cropped hair explained, his smile teasing.
"Why didn't you just call and let us know you were going to be late?" Ed asked, frazzled.
"We tried," a second man replied, holding up his phone. "But it went straight to voicemail."
Slowly, Edward reached into Roy's pocket, digging out his phone. He pushed a button—nothing. "Your phone was off!" he shouted, exasperated. "No wonder we didn't hear anything."
Blinking in confusion, Roy grabbed the phone and checked it as well, laughing when he realized what Ed said was true. "Whoops, sorry about that."
Shaking his head, Edward pushed open the door and clambered out, followed by a still chuckling Roy. Grinning good naturedly, the first man held out his hand to shake. "No worries, we're all here now. I'm Troy, and this is Evan. Looks like we'll be doing the photography for your wedding."
Ed smiled back. Right off the bat, he liked Troy, though Evan was a little unnerving in how quiet he was. "So, lead the way you two," Troy went on after shaking Roy's hand as well. "We've never done photos here, so I have no idea where I'm going."
Roy walked on ahead, while Edward fell back a little to talk to Troy, with Evan bringing up the rear. "So how long have you been a photographer?"
"Oh, off and on for about seven years."
"'Off and on?'" Ed repeated questioningly. "Why?"
Troy laughed. "I just get bored sometimes, like to try new things. I keep coming back, though, 'cause I'm always good enough to get a job with it, whereas some of my little ventures have been duds, to say the least."
That sounded a little…sad. Edward wouldn't exactly call his position in the military his dream job and that was fine, but he'd always assumed that people who did artsy things for a living actually enjoyed it, whereas Troy made it sound like an obligation.
"I was actually really stoked to get the call from you guys, though," the man went on.
"What? Why?"
Roy turned his head just slightly, laughing. "That's right, I forgot to tell you. Troy's a fan of your little show, he saw when I proposed to you."
Blushing to the roots of his hair, Ed found himself mumbling, "Fuck, that's embarrassing. I mean, I knew it was, like, live, but I never thought I'd meet anyone who saw it…"
"Nah, don't be embarrassed, it was adorable. Although, it did get me in a little bit of trouble—my husband got all indignant that I proposed to him the normal, boring way instead of doing something exciting," Troy mused.
"You've got a husband?" Edward asked, surprised by the information.
"Yep, I've had one for three years. Evan doesn't like it, that's why he doesn't talk much, but that's how it is. Don't worry, we'll still give you great photos."
That was a little shocking. While most everyone had been perfectly calm about him and Roy being a couple, Ed hadn't really met any other gay people, although that could just be because he didn't really make an effort to get to know anyone outside the military. "Huh."
"Surprised?" Troy chuckled.
"Well, yeah. Wh—"
"No, no, no more about me," the man chided as they stepped into the arbor. "Time to focus on you two." He took a moment to look around, nodding appreciatively at the scenery, looking critically at the gazebo that would serve as an altar. "Okay, okay, very nice. I have to admit, when Roy told me about the gazebo, I was a little worried—sometimes they can be all closed up and shadowy, which makes it hard to get a good picture, but this one's perfectly open. So…" he went on, half thinking to himself and half addressing them. "We'll have to get one of you walking down the aisle, Ed, so I'll probably have Evan stationed next to the gazebo to get that, and then I'll want to come up behind you to get you two saying your vows, and the kiss…"
"We want to get one with the team," Roy interjected. "Since we aren't having mass amounts of groomsmen or anything up here, we were going to do that instead."
"Alrighty…any other shots you want to make sure I get?"
Edward glanced at Roy, then shrugged. "Not here. I mean, of course we'll want to make sure we get the cake cutting and the first dance and all that at the reception, but as far as I've seen, more candid shots are a lot nicer than overly posed ones, so as long as you get the things you mentioned…"
"Easygoing, just how I like it," Troy said, nodding his approval. "You wouldn't believe how bossy some people are."
"Oh, trust me, he's plenty bossy," Roy teased, elbowing Ed. "He's just polite with strangers."
"Says the guy who used to be my literal boss," Edward hissed back, slapping the man on the arm.
"Now, Ed, no reason to get feisty when we have company."
"I'll show you feisty."
"You won't get an argument from me," Roy replied with a smooth wink.
Edward was never one to much care who watched his shenanigans, and so he walked away behind Roy, turning back sneakily to push against the backs of the man's knees and make him fall in the grass beside the paved walkway. It worked, only Roy wasn't one to be outdone, and so he tripped Ed as well. Edward went crashing down and before he could do anything, Roy had rolled on top of him.
Raucous laughter reminded them that Troy and Evan were watching the whole thing, and Ed couldn't stop a giggle from escaping him. After one, they didn't stop, and he and Roy both ended up shaking in laughter. Eventually the man pressed a kiss to Edward's forehead and stood, pulling Ed with him.
"'Kay, so, I definitely need to get one like that for the wedding," Troy chortled. "Only maybe with Edward on top. With the dress and everything, that way it will look more adorable and less…sexual."
"We'll get all dirty though…" Ed pointed out. As cute as the shot would probably be, he didn't want Roy to end up with a muddy back.
"I'll bring a sheet or something for you guys to lay on," Troy responded dismissively. "No worries."
"Sounds good to me," Roy decided. "If you can bring the sheet so there's no problem, it'd be pretty fun to get some shots with the trees as well."
"True…" Troy mused. "We'll have to use some extra lighting, though, since you said this was going to be a late wedding."
"Considering our theme is stars…I'm pretty sure a little glow won't hurt anything," Ed interjected.
"That's right, I forgot…well, that'll fit then. I can't tell you how many times a bride has gotten angry because I had to 'ruin her lovely night wedding.'"
Edward couldn't help thinking of Winry, and how much beating with a wrench would be involved with her wedding plans. "I guess having two grooms just solves a lot of problems."
Troy laughed over an irritated snort of Evan's. "You can say that again."
