I've noticed most of the scientists seem sleep deprived, half are heavy-lidded and almost dozing off in the chair as they slowly tap away at their keyboards, the other half are clearly on something that's keeping their body active far longer than it should have, a sort of manic hyperactivity. I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of them drop dead from an overdose in the next few days.
I assume they want something to show off to the mysterious "guest", a couple of soldiers I've chatted with do know some people who pop in time to time, although they don't know much about them beyond some vague physical features. He did mention that the guest is unlikely to be a Blackwatch General, they pop in time to time for inspections, but often we're meant to be warned in advance to prep ourselves, polish our boots and all that. More likely the guest is a high-ranked Gentek scientist, here to strut his stuff or show off results from another lab.
And if they're a scientist I really shouldn't know, or care. But what the fuck else am I meant to do? There really isn't much enjoyable to do now, and it's nice to keep my brain active. I'm pretty sure the point of all this boredom they inflict on us is to supress thinking.
Or maybe I'm just paranoid, but what does it matter? Like I said, it's something to think about and pass the time. Half-tempted to ask someone for a deck of cards, but if I get laughed at one more time teeth will fly. It's a load of crap that the only tasks we're given are mind-numbingly dull or incredibly dangerous. Boredom and terror, like I'm back in the thick of combat. I suppose it's relatively safer here than on the front lines, but with the shit they're doing, it doesn't make me sleep any easier.
Actually managed to get a name out of a soldier today too, Matthew, although I'm not sure if the hesitation he had before saying it was because he didn't know whether to trust me or if he made one up there and then. Seriously, why the hell is everyone so tight-lipped about their fucking names? I'd say they were worried about the psycho's finding out and tracking them down on the million to one chance they both get out of here alive, but even the guys I wouldn't want to be in the general vicinity of aren't keen on divulging it. Fuck, I don't care if you make up a name; I just want a way to tell everyone apart. The whole reason I started talking with Matthew was because I thought he was one of the guys who warned me against ending up in "crowd control". Thankfully the guy didn't give a shit, 'bout time I found someone a little more talkative.
Guy says he's been guarding Gentek facilities for two years, this one isn't the first, he managed to be good enough that they went through the trouble of drugging him and taking him between facilities rather than shooting him and finding a replacement closer to the new site. Or at least that's the story he's been told, he's not convinced they kill that many when switching. More likely they break up the guards to spread about, minimize the chances of bonds forming between us or something.
Alright, that last part was my guessing, he laughed and said I was fucking crazy, but he's still the best source of info I've got, and I'll probably need a few pointers to go places around here. I'll be trying to track him down tomorrow to talk more.
Probably be some jumps in the days before long.
