My name is Adrian. And my work of line is… well you would call me a thief, but this is not entirely the truth. I admit if I am not on a hired job, I break in to steal valuables to sell them for income. However most of the time I am recovering objects or infiltrate. The reasons behind these jobs are nothing I will ask. In exchange I keep secret about those who hired me.
Only if the other side doesn't play along these simple rules, I let the police know who hired me for the job. Of course I am not so stupid to go directly to them, but I have my ways to let them know.
However… the job I took now is the one I should have refused… alone the feeling upon meeting my contact told me to not even think of taking this job. And as I learned Mewpyres are involved in this particular one, every alarm bell in my mind warned me about taking against these creatures… nobody who dared to enter their realm without permission was never seen again!
It was the challenge behind this mission which made me accept it. The task itself sounds easy: Enter their territory, find any secret or weakness which could be used against them, and return to report.
So far it sounds easy, the problem itself are two points: Mewpyres are taking great measures to make sure nobody can enter their territory. While the borders aren't closed by walls or something like that, they put warning signs everywhere which tells to not enter their territory. Wildlife is free to roam, but any human entering there is gone forever.
While the trading post is a pseudo way of entering their territory, no human was ever roaming outside the trading post… at least the humans which weren't living in the Mewpyre Empire. It is a known fact humans life there and somehow some are allowed to enter their realm. However, these people are either going to stay there forever or they are meeting with a representative from the empire. Those returning from these meetings, however, cannot tell much since they are held isolated from the rest of the empire.
Satellite pictures provided their architecture and knowledge how their cities are built, but nothing else which could be useful against them were found.
One country tried to force its way into the empire… with devastating results! Most of the army went missing and then the Mewpyre themself came to said country: They took everybody who had a connection in raising this war as hostage, including the families, and destroyed the entire military structure.
The deaths of humans were very low, but what is a soldier without any usable equipment?
And the missing teams which had the job to infiltrate the empire and kill the queen… nobody knows what happened to them, but knowing the nature of the Mewpyres I guess they were either turned into Mewpyres, slaves, or were sucked dry.
So… why I am so crazy to take up a job which is impossible? Again, the challenge. I wanted to be known as the human who successfully infiltrated the Mewpyre Empire and came out alive to tell.
Any kind of infiltration job requires information how to reach the destination. Even in the best security system is a weak spot which can be exploited. And here was the first challenge: Entering the Mewpyre! Aside of the trouble to pass the borders without capture, I have to make sure the Mewpyres won't blow any kind of cover I put up… but for that I need to know how the humans of the Empire are living.
I figured the trading post might be a chance… entering it wasn't this much of a problem, but then I saw I it was not an option: The goods entering the empire are all going through controls so hiding into something to pass the border isn't working. And all exits have guards post at any given time.
The other boarders came back into my mind, but I don't know how the Mewpyres manage to capture anybody who dares to enter their territory… and due to their colors and size they could hide anywhere without being noticed at all.
And with these conditions I seek for a different solution… which came by chance! One of my informants told me a cult which serves the Mewpyres are recruiting new people every now and then. Also, I found out one of the meeting points for this action. So the change of plan was to infiltrate this cult to gather the required information by them. As far as my information goes, the members are all going to the empire at a point of their life. However, if they return from there is unknown since the few members I got contact to are not really talking to me in this matter.
Well… I guess I have to take the chance and "enter" this cult. It is a riskful job, but if this works out fine, I will be holding information which is worth my weight in gold.
Perhaps I should take some weight on before they measure it with gold to get a bit more than it would with my current one… after all, my job is not making you fat in any sense.
