Are the fanfics of you finding out about Harry's actual home life realistic? If you found out about how the Dursley's really treated him, how would you react? Would you regret how you treated him?

Dear SuckIt Slytherin,
I've never read such a fanfic so I cannot answer this first question of yours… and when I found out about how the Dursley's treated him I was partially shocked, but not greatly. He was fed and clothed and sheltered so what are the issues? As for how I treated him, I regret little, he was his father in many ways, but I suppose he had much of Lily in him that I refused to see. So yes, I regret some, but not due to how the Dursley's treated the boy.
