Author's Note:

Greetings all. So I'm finally updating this after finishing 'DFBD' and we are not on the Enterprise this time around. Thank you for continuing to support this story even though I haven't added to it for several weeks and I hope you enjoy this chapter.

I don't own any aspect of Star Trek.

Breakfast with the McCoy's

Mealtimes in the McCoy household were often an interesting experience.

First of all the kitchen/dining room was unusual in that it lacked many of the new hi-tech devices found in most homes since Mrs McCoy preferred her old fashioned oven and stove. Secondly the room still retained its original décor as close as possible and although McCoy senior was a doctor by trade like his son he held an interest in old work equipment which was hung up on various walls around the room. Thirdly the room was huge with a large open stone floor space and a high beamed ceiling you wouldn't find in modern houses complete with hooks for hanging cooking herbs.

All these things were unusual but what made meals really interesting was the people especially when Leonard McCoy was home. Since joining Starfleet Leonard coming home also meant that Jim Kirk and, more recently, Pavel Chekov came as well and Leonard's parents went by the rule that if their son's friends were under their roof than they were to be treated as family. This meant that all three were spoiled rotten for the duration of their stay.

The morning started as it typically did during such a stay, Mrs McCoy was up first and began to make breakfast. She was closely followed by her husband and they would have a peaceful half hour together before being joined by Leonard, it then would only be about five minutes before Jim would also appear just in time for the breakfast pancakes to be served.

It was at first quite quiet as everyone applied themselves to the food, with Jim and Leonard demolishing most of the first batch of pancakes between them, until Mrs McCoy finally spoke, "So how did you boys sleep last night?"

"Like a log Mom."

"Brilliantly Mrs McCoy."

McCoy senior looked up from his own plate, "Is Pavel not down yet?"

"Leave him be dear." Mrs McCoy said, "He's a teenager and I think we can allow him a bit of a lie in."

"Besides Dr McCoy" Jim added, "if he takes too long to wake up we can just stand in the hall with a plate of pancakes and waft the smell up the stairs, that'll get him down quick."

The man shook his head, "I still don't believe that he is never late for any of his shifts on board your ship. He sleeps in so late when he's here that I just can't see him up bright and early like you say he usually is."

It was a strange truth about Pavel, when on the Enterprise he was only late for his shift under extreme circumstances and would never oversleep even if he had been pulling several all nighters in a row and was ridiculously tired. When he was completely off duty however it was like he suddenly became like every other teen in the world and would rarely see the mornings due to staying in bed and only surfacing when there was food available. It was and odd quirk of his character that Jim, Bones and Spock had yet to fathom and they had most definitely tried.

As it was Pavel appeared in time for the second batch of pancakes still looking half asleep and in his pyjamas (gold-coloured with the Starfleet symbol all over them, Nyota had bought them for him) and plonked himself between Jim and Bones. As Mrs McCoy placed about half the batch on Pavel's plate, Jim greeted the boy cheerily, "Morning Pavel, how did you sleep?"

Pavel replied with a sort of sleepy grunt before setting upon the pancakes before him like a ravenous wolf who was trying to eat politely. Bones watched as the food vanished with amazing rapidity and dryly remarked, "Is there a famine due which you haven't told us about yet kid."

"Leonard, he is a growing boy that needs a lot of food." His mother jokingly admonished as she loaded the boy's plate up again with the rest of the pancakes.

Breakfast continued in this fashion with Pavel managing to eat twice as many pancakes as Jim and Bones put together. The meal lasted well into the morning and Jim had everyone in stitches when he told them about the time he, Pavel and Scotty went to a museum dedicated to the history of space travel (they found that one of the exhibits was wrong and instead of just telling one of the staff they had tried to correct the error themselves, they were now banned from the museum). This led to more stories including many from Leonard's childhood, much to the doctor's embarrassment (he threatened Jim and Pavel with slow and painful deaths if they ever told anyone else about the story involving the ducks and a jack russell). This then morphed into them flicking small bits of paper at each other followed by an arm wrestling tournament which Mrs McCoy was surprisingly good at (she beat anyone who dared challenge her). Eventually Jim managed to rib Bones enough to cause the doctor to chase him round and round the kitchen before catching him and suitably punishing him by putting him in a headlock and giving him a noogie.

Mealtimes at the McCoy's were indeed interesting.

Ps-So there we are and I hope you enjoyed it. Please let me know what you thought and any suggestions will be welcome.
