Discipline
Pavel was finding it very hard to restrain himself and not punch the Ambassador's son.
The Enterprise was transporting several ambassadors to a Federation summit and Ambassador Sogrun had brought his son, Fredrick, with him. Sogrun himself was a very friendly, outgoing and likable person but Fredrick was a classic brat who seemed to think that all others were beneath him. This meant that despite the fact they were the same age Fredrick did not like Pavel who returned the dislike wholeheartedly.
Ever since he'd arrived Fredrick had been going out of his way to annoy Pavel and there were very few places the young navigator could go to avoid him and still do his duties, thankfully the bridge was one such place since the other teen couldn't go there without permission. Unfortunately the rec. rooms were completely open to all so unless Pavel wanted to spend all of his free time in his quarters he had to put up with Fredrick. Pavel wasn't the only one Fredrick was annoying, the bratty teen had made a nuisance of himself in Engineering and said some derogatory comments about Keenser until Ensign Harvard had come up with a safety regulation to get rid of him before Scotty strangled him, McCoy was muttering about giving the kid a good tanning when he mucked up all their medical stores several times, Hikaru and the botanists were furious when he deliberately uprooted some of the plants they were studying, he was using the ship's internal comms like a hotel's room service driving Nyota up the wall, he kept ordering Yeoman Rand around like a servant and his general air of superiority was infuriating everyone else. By now there wasn't a day, possibly an hour, that went by where someone wasn't either complaining about Fredrick or muttering about dire ways to punish him such as leaving the boy to the mercy of the goose. Unfortunately because of the delicate nature of the mission they all just had to grin and bear it but it was getting increasingly more difficult. The only one who didn't seem to mind was Jo-Jo the parrot who was having a whale of a time insulting and swearing at the teen every chance he got, in fact it was this that stopped Pavel from punching Fredrick despite the fact he was getting the worst of it.
Now his patience was being severely tested.
He'd just come from a trying bridge shift where a load of small things had gone wrong such as consoles not working, misaligned instruments and glitches in the computer system, none of them were particularly major or difficult to fix but they had been irritating none the less so he wasn't the happiest person at that time. Of course this was when Fredrick decided to come into the same rec. room as him and begin his usual smug baiting and insults.
"So I guess you haven't driven us into a planet yet. I'm still surprised they let someone as useless and pathetic as you anywhere near a starship."
Pavel just ignored this as he'd heard similar things from Fredrick before.
"But I suppose they just keep you because no-one else wants you."
Again nothing he'd not heard before so it was also ignored.
"I mean who'd want some orphaned loser with a whole host of psychological issues apart from Captain James 'Emotional Mess' Kirk."
Pavel could easily deal with the orphan and the psychological line, it was no secret he was an orphan and since Lientov pretty much the whole crew were aware to some extent of the abuse he'd suffered as a child and all it did was give the reason for some of his emotional needs they'd already accepted. He found it harder to ignore the jab at Jim but he knew that his surrogate father could take it without batting an eyelid so he managed. He guessed that Fredrick must know one of the Admirals who didn't really like Jim to get a hold of the information for his insult but the teen obviously didn't know as much about Jim as he was pretending he did.
"There can't be any other reason because your past failures make it obvious you're not fit to do anything."
That attracted Pavel's attention and he narrowed his eyes at Fredrick, "Vhat failures?"
The other boy smirked, "Well failing to beam up Ambassador Sarek's wife would be one. I can't believe they kept you on after you were responsible for the death of such a high profile person."
Pavel clenched his fists, "I did ewerysing I could to sawe her."
Fredrick snorted, "You still failed though, I bet someone more competent could have done it but that's nothing compared to your inadequacy when you were Engineering Chief. You let the warp core fail and then you were incapable of restarting it, it was your uselessness that killed so many, including your pathetic excuse of a captain…"
Fredrick got no further as at that moment Pavel let out a feral growl and leapt at him knocking him onto the floor. After a moment of shock Fredrick started to fight back and soon the two were rolling around the floor viciously tussling. They carried on this way with each boy trying to give as good as he got when someone suddenly pulled them apart and held them by the scruff of their shirts. Panting heavily Pavel looked and saw that it was Hendorff who'd broken up the fight but his attention was instantly pulled away from the security officer by the voice of Jim Kirk.
"Hendorff, what was going on here?"
Pavel looked towards the doorway and saw not only Jim standing there but also Spock, Ambassador Sogrun and several other ambassadors. Hendorff answered still holding onto the two teens, "Ensign Chekov was already here when young Mr Sogrun entered. He started insulting Chekov and then the Ensign jumped at him. They tussled until I managed to pull them apart just as you came in sir."
Jim gave him a nod and then looked at Pavel, no doubt noticing his defiance and desire to start the fight again, and spoke with tone that just showed a little of his anger, "Ensign you will return to your quarters immediately and you will not leave until further notice, understand?"
Pavel desperately wanted to protest and defend himself there and then but Jim was giving him the look of both his Captain and Father and he knew better than to argue with it, "Understood Captain."
Pavel felt his blood boil as Fredrick smirked at him as Hendorff released the navigator and he made his way to the door. The other teens smirk was soon wiped from his face when Ambassador Sogrun marched over to his son and gave him a definite whack around the head, Pavel only just managed to contain his grin of satisfaction at the sound of his enemy getting punished as well.
Fredrick had also been banished to his quarters by his father and when both boys had vanished the Ambassador turned to Jim who started to give his apology, "Ambassador, I am very sorry for…"
The man waved of the apology, "There is no need Captain, I believe my own son is as much, if not more, to blame for this as well as your own. They are both young and teenage boys will fight from time to time, it's a part of growing up so I will not ask you to take any disciplinarily action other than that of any decent father. I don't think he needs to have a black mark on his record for a bit of teenage idiocy."
"Thank you Ambassador but I will take steps to ensure this doesn't happen again."
"As will I Captain and I will also address Fredrick's behaviour on your ship up to today. Unfortunately I only heard about what he'd been doing just before we came in here otherwise I would have dealt with him earlier and we might have avoided this whole incident."
The Ambassador gave him a respectful nod then left to no doubt deal with his son. Spock took the other ambassadors elsewhere which meant that Jim was free to go and deal with Pavel. He decided to return to his quarters for a bit to give the boy time to cool off and to decide what he was going to say. He hadn't been there long when Bones came in.
"I heard that Pavel had tried to give Fredrick the beating we all thought he deserved."
Jim just looked at his friend and sighed, "I still can't believe he started a fight, he's never done anything like this before."
Bones sat across from his friend, "He's young Jim and I guess Fredrick just hit the right buttons. As I believe the Ambassador said they are both teenage boys and teenage boys quite often have the odd dust-up, I know I did when I was his age."
"I have no idea how I'm going to deal with him."
"Neither do most parents Jim, you just have to do what you think is best. My only advice is don't go in purely angry cause all you'll do is yell at each other and that won't help anything."
Jim gave a nod of acknowledgement and McCoy got up to leave, "Just go with your gut, surprisingly enough you seem to have great paternal instincts where Pavel is concerned."
With that Bones left and sat thinking about what his friend had said.
About an hour later Jim entered Pavel's quarters.
It seemed that the boy had calmed down a bit because he looked a bit more ashamed than he had when Jim had sent him here. Pavel was sitting on his bed and was staring down at the floor and Jim left a pause before speaking, "Pavel," the boy looked up at him, "I am very disappointed in you."
The teen hung his head again and Jim sighed, "Why did you do it?"
Pavel continued to stare at the floor as if it would speak for him.
"Pavel?"
Jim's voice held a tone of warning and the boy looked back up at him, "He vas saying sings about me and about you."
"Why didn't you just ignore him?"
Pavel looked back down at the floor and didn't answer.
"Pavel?"
The teen continued to stare at the floor and he started to scuff his feet. Jim spoke again, "Why didn't you just ignore him?"
He got a mumbled reply.
"What did you just say?"
Another mumble though it was slightly louder this time.
"What did you just say?"
Pavel looked up at him, "I did ignore him to begin vith but zen he started on my failures." He looked away but kept speaking, "He said zat I vas responsible for ze death of Spock's mozer Amanda and zen he said zat eet vas my fault zat ze varp core failed vhen ve faced Kahn and zat because I couldn't fix eet, I vas responsible for eweryvon who died."
Jim felt sympathy for the boy in front of him, no wonder he'd jumped on Fredrick if that is what was being thrown at him. It seemed that the other boy had indeed picked the very things that would set Pavel off and a part of him was wishing that Pavel had hurt Fredrick more. It also raised the question of how Fredrick knew so much but if he remembered correctly one of the Admirals was the boy's grandfather and he was one of the ones who really didn't like him. The chances were that Fredrick had heard a few things from him intentionally or not that were not public knowledge. Jim pushed that matter aside and focused on the more pressing task before him. He sat next to Pavel on the bed, "Pavel."
The boy looked at him, "Da Papa?"
Jim sighed, "I understand why you attacked Fredrick and I also think that what he said was uncalled for and cruel but you shouldn't have done it. Jon taught you better than that and you know that I can't let this go unpunished, in most cases you would be receiving an official disciplinary mark on your record."
Pavel nodded.
"However, Ambassador Sogrun is not pursuing official action and has left your punishment to my discretion."
The teen looked at him in surprise and Jim continued, "Because of this your actions today will not be reflected in your official record as I agree that Fredrick is as much to blame as you and that it was simply two teenagers having a dust-up. You will however be confined to your quarters out with normal duties for two weeks and if something like this happens again I will take more serious action, understand?"
The boy nodded, "Da Papa."
Jim placed a hand on his shoulder, "Good and everything Fredrick said is wrong, none of what happened is your fault."
Pavel smiled, "Sank you Papa."
Jim returned the smile and left.
After his father had dealt with him Fredrick was no trouble although he wasn't able to sit down for quite a long time.
PS-So I hope you all liked that and please let me know what you think.
