She opened the door and everything was quiet, not a light usually Castle was waiting for her watching television or playing a video game now, he was in bed fast asleep with a frown on his face. She chose out her clothes for the night and turned to exit the room and froze when she saw Castle wide awake giving her a glare that surpassed her own.

"Hey." She tried to make the situation less awkward.

It didn't work, he was still glaring.

"Did you eat?" It was noticeable that she wasn't eating like she was supposed to, her body was pail and her cheek bones were more pronounced she was losing weight.

"When was the last time you ate?"

She sighed she was the worst person ever, there he was furious at her and still asking her if she ate anything.

"Uhh, I think I had a slice of pizza at lunch." He sighed and got out of bed and she followed him to the kitchen, where he put the leftovers into the micro wave and let it heat up for a few minutes not saying a word and avoiding her gaze.

Then he took out the bowl and turned to leave.

"Rick!" he stopped.

"I don't want to fight anymore."

He turned around.

"Me neither but you have to make a choice your mother or your family." Then he left.

When Kate walked into the morgue that morning the last thing she expected to see was Lanie clearly waiting for her with a cup of coffee and a bear claw.

"Thanks, but why are you giving this to me?"

"Because I am sure you haven't gotten any for a while."

Kate didn't answer she just looked down.

"Oh, honey are you guys fighting?"

When Kate looked up she was sure that they were tears in her eyes.

"What did you fight about?"

"Well like you know by now this case is related to my mother's case and I guess I kind of started back down the rabbit hole again and I came home late a few times and one night we had this huge fight about how I was acting and that I was being negligent and then last night I got home late again and he told me that I had to choose between my mother's case or them."

"Girl I'm gonna smack you, how could you let this fight get so far it's your fault you should have gotten down on your knees and beg for forgiveness since the first time you guys fought."

"Lanie she's my mother." Kate argued.

"So, Kate she's dead besides your mother doesn't want you to lose your family over her murder she would want you to be happy."

That was one thing about her over sass giving best friend she tells you like it is and that was one of the main reasons why she could share her problems with her.

"I don't want to disappoint her."

"You're the best homicide detective in New York City, you have books based on you written by a best selling author, and you are married with a daughter, how can she possibly be disappointed."

"So what do I do?" Kate asked.

"Well first thing first you need to make a choice and I think you guys need some time alone no Becca, no work, no writing just you and him because you guys haven't really had that much time to yourselves since your honeymoon because a month after you found out you were pregnant then Becca was born and I know how hard it is to get some time alone with a kid."

"And what about Becca and Alexis I know she's sixteen but..."

"I am sure Martha or Jim would be happy to babysit their grand kids or if not Esposito and I are trying for a baby girl, it would be great to see how Max reacts and to see how life would be."

The doors opened and Ryan and Esposito entered the morgue.

"We weren't ease dropping but Lanie is right you haven't been on vacation since your maternity leave, It's time for another we can take over." Esposito said.

"He's right we can take over, while you and Castle go on vacation, just tell him he owes us a boys night after you get back."

When she got home only Alexis was there, doing her home work in the living room.

"Hey." The red head greeted.

"Hey lexis, where's your dad and Becca?" she asked.

"Well dad said Gina called and said that she wanted a meeting and he said that he was taking Becca to the park afterwards, then they were going to stop for some groceries.

She nodded her head before grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge.

"You're home early I wasn't expecting you until tonight." Kate looked at the clock it was 6:27 and it was a shock for her to be at home she had really messed up.

"Look, Alexis there's something I want to say."

That caught the girl's attention and she sat up to look at her face better.

"What is it?" she was almost in tears did something happen?

"It's nothing to worry about, I just wanted to say that I'm sorry I haven't been around lately, but it's going to change I promise."

Alexis smiled. "It's okay mom I understand."

She stretched out her hands for a hug and Kate gladly accepted, if only it were this easy with Castle.

"If you're not busy or haven't found someone else, I'll be happy to go shopping with you on Monday."

"Great, we'll leave at 9."

"Well, I'm going to go start on dinner Becca and your dad are going to be here any minute."

"I'll help." Alexis followed.

Things were silent and Kate could tell there was something on the girl's mind but she wouldn't push, Alexis would share in her own time, and that time came less than 10 minutes later.

"Are you and dad fighting?" She blurted out.

Kate's eyes widened and she froze, she was not expecting that she was expecting her to ask something about Ashley or something about school, but certainly not about the fight between her and Castle.

"You don't have to answer that, it's none of my business, I shouldn't have asked sorry." Alexis's face was red and she looked down right nervous.

"No it is your business, but why did you ask?"

"It's just that you two are always in this cute bubble that no one can pop, saying cute things, showing affection and laughing and now all of the sudden things are awkward between you two, you don't share breakfast you hardly talk and when you do, it's because you have to."

In a few more years and some training Alexis would make one heck of a detective.

"Are you guy going to get a..."

"Gosh oh Gosh no we are not getting a divorce sweetie I admit were having a little fight but we'll get over it soon."

"But you guys have never had a fight like this I don't think I've ever seen you fight at all."

"Alexis, no marriage is perfect just because, you love each other and agree to stay together forever doesn't mean you won't fight and everything will be perfect."

"But..."

"It'll be okay Alexis I promise." She was making promises she couldn't keep but she would sure as hell try.

Things went back to normal Alexis talked but not as much as she normally would she was worried, but it wasn't her job to be.

"Well Becca, your sister is going to be busy trying to finish her project and stressing herself out like she always does and I'm pretty sure that your mother isn't coming home until late tonight, so it's just going to be you and me peach." Castle said loading the groceries into the trolly.

Becca gave him a glare.

"You look exactly like your mother when you give me that look, and do you have a better idea for a nickname for a food that is orange?"

She turned her face away.

"How about squash, do you like that one?"

Another glare.

"How, about just plain orange?"

She stuck out her tongue then stretched over and touched on of the pumpkins and looked back at him expectantly and he looked from the pumpkin to the girl looking at him, they really needed to check and see if their baby was a genius.

"Okayyy, but pumpkin is Alexis's nickname so we have to choose another one for you, oooh how about nectarine or tangerine."

"No" she babbled.

"Okay even I didn't like those."

"Castle." He turned to see Jenny and Olivia and Oliver dressed in their school uniforms, for Marlowe prep suggested by Castle of course.

"Hey Jenny how's it going?"

"Oh great, Ryan just called and said that they got off early so I decided to make something special."

Ryan and Esposito got off early did that mean that Kate left early too.

"Kate didn't say anything so she probably stayed."

"I don't think so maybe she wanted to surprise you."

"I hope that's the case."

He bent down in front of Olivia.

"So is school really like frogs."

Jenny and Ryan were looking for a private school to put them in after the public one broke out in lice and Olivia and Oliver decided they never wanted to go back to school and Olivia made it known that she taught school was disgusting like frogs.

"No, it's fun."She cheered.

"Oliver."

He nodded his head shyly. "It is."

"Thanks for your help Castle."

"No prob anything for these two." He flashed them a smile.

"Anyway, I should go I left Alexis at home alone."

"Oh yea me too."

"Bye."

"Hear that baby girl? They like the school."

"Now let's go see if mommy's home or if she ditched us for work again."

He opened the door and his mouth immediately started to water, Alexis could cook but only one person had the talent to make him feel hungry just by the scent of their food.

"You're home early."

The night wasn't like it usually was but it was better than it was for the past few weeks, they watched movies until Alexis retired to her bed leaving them alone and in silence both hoping that the other would start a conversation, finally Kate gave up.

"We need some time alone, no one but you and me there's a lot of things we need to talk about and we need to get away from the stress of life and work and just relax."

She waited for his answer biting so hard on her lip that she could feel the red, coppery, salty liquid in her mouth.

"I think we do but can you take time off?"

"I already have two weeks."

A hint of a smile entered his face.

"I did a lot of thinking, and you were right and I am making a choice, and that choice is my family."

"Where are we going?" he asked allowing the excitement to seep into his voice.

"I was saying the Hamptons we haven't been there since before we found out about Becca."

"I have one question." Castle said.

"What."

"When do we leave?"

Now we get to see them alone in the Hamptons there will be probably be one more fight then lots of fluff and I also have a few scenes for Jim and Martha (Don't worry not a romantic one that would just be weird.)
