I nearly fell down face-first as I walked out of the bathroom.
"Dean!" I yelped as I tripped over him and lost my balance. He immediately jumped up and caught me, stumbling back as I fell against his chest.
"What the hell!?"
"Sorry, sorry, sorry!" He apologized quickly. Before I could even talk, he pressed his lips to my mine and then proceeded to pepper my face with kisses.
"Dean," I laughed as I tried to push him away.
"Angel, I'm sorry! What do I have to do to make you forgive me?" He tried to ask seriously but cracked a smile at the end. I shook my head as I pulled him forward and kissed him.
I rested my forehead against his and I couldn't help but grin as I looked at him, "You're an idiot."
"That's why you love me."
"Damn right," I grinned as I kissed him again. He dragged his hands down my waist, drawing small circles into my hips with his thumbs.
"You okay?" he asked softly and slid his hand across my stomach, "I mean..." I grabbed his wrists and pulled them away as I mumbled, "Dean, stop."
I could feel his eyes on me as I looked down. The confusion and the sadness in them. I wanted so badly to tell him how I felt. How this would and wouldn't work. But I didn't know how and he was going to suffer because of that– because of me.
"What's going on, Ashley?"
"I just," I could feel my throat getting tighter but I willed my voice to stay steady, "I don't want you to drop everything for me. You still have your brother and Bobby and the apocalypse to deal with... Don't risk it all for me– for one person, Dean."
"Hey," he tilted my chin up to meet his eyes, "You're right. Maybe I have been paying less attention to them– especially my brother. But this is new to me, Angel. I-I never... I mean, I've never had this before and I don't want to mess it up. I know we have the apocalypse and angels and demons and whatever's wrong with Sammy, okay? I know how bad it is. But messing up and doing something to lose you?" He shook his head as he took a deep breath, "I'd take the apocalypse over that any day."
"Dean, you can't keep putting me ahead of everything and everyone. What about your brother? Before you met me, you would have kicked his ass and dealt with him and the demon blood by now."
"Then what do you want me to do? Do you want me to just pretend like I don't love you and I don't care what happens to you?"
I heard the annoyance creep into his voice and I winced. I didn't want this. I just wanted him to understand, to feel what I felt. But, honestly, I didn't even know what I was feeling.
"I don't know," I whispered quietly, wishing I hadn't even said anything. He sighed and pulled me against his chest, saying nothing. I felt him start to sway slowly and I wrapped my arms around him as I closed my eyes.
"You're scared," he mumbled softly.
"So are you."
"That's why you pushed me away, isn't it?"
I just wrapped my arms tighter around him and said nothing.
"I was thinking of going to the store today and getting some... y'know... tests."
My lips trembled as I nodded and tears spilled down my cheek.
"Shhh," Dean rubbed my back, "Don't cry, Angel. It'll be okay." He pulled me back, gently drying my tears with his thumbs, "Hey, don't worry. Maybe it's just a false alarm– we don't know for sure yet."
"What if it isn't?" I whispered, terrified.
He smiled softly, "Then I'll be the luckiest man in the world."
I felt the edges of my lips curl up slightly as I looked at him and he leaned forward and kissed me.
"Now, we should probably go downstairs and talk to everyone, considering we slept through a solid day."
I pulled back to look at him, "No, we didn't. You're such a liar!"
"Babe," he smiled, "It's Thursday."
My jaw dropped in surprise, causing him to laugh. I narrowed my eyes at him and poked his ribs as he continued to laugh. He laughed even harder as he tried to grab my wrists.
"Not so funny now," I grinned as I tickled him, "Is it?"
"Angel," he laughed uncontrollably, "Alright, stop! You win! You win!"
I laughed breathlessly as he held his stomach and breathed heavily, "You're out of shape, big guy."
"Could catch," pant, "you, if I wanted."
"Try me."
He watched me for a minute, seeming like he was deciding. I saw the flicker in his eyes and I turned to run down the stairs as he lunged forward. Running madly through the office and the kitchen with no sign of anyone, I flew out the backdoor.
"SAM!"
"ASHLEY!?"
"NO CHEATING!" Dean shouted from behind me. I turned sharply to follow Sam's voice, slipping slightly in the gravel. I heard Dean do the same, followed by a loud skidding and a thump.
"Son of a bitch!"
"Ashley!? What's wrong?" I turned into the garage and saw Sam and Bobby, letting out a pant of relief as I hid behind Sam.
"Dean," I panted, "Out of shape. Hide me."
"What?"
Dean stumbled into the garage, almost completely doubled over, "You're cheating."
"Come and get me, then."
He sighed as he started to walk towards me with a look of boredem in his eyes. I started to back away slowly as he approached. As he came closer, I saw the same flicker in his eyes– the one that gave him away– and I ducked and spun around him with a yelp as he lunged for me. I grabbed his arm and twisted it behind his back almost instinctively. He tried to turn around, only making it worse on his arm and he cursed loudly.
"Fuck!"
"Could catch you, if I wanted," I mocked teasingly into his ear as Sam barked out a laugh.
"Shut up."
"Whaddya say, Sam?" I asked as I grinned, "Anything you want to do to your shithead brother?"
Dean leaned back to meet my gaze as he smiled sweetly, "Aw c'mon, you don't really want to do that to your boyfriend. Just lemme go, Angel."
"Sam?"
"I'm good, but..." he looked between Dean and I with a grin on his face, "Maybe you should keep humiliating him a little longer."
"That's just rude."
"You're being a real smartass for someone who just got beat by their girlfriend."
"Tell me, who won the last bet?"
"Oh, you wanna go there?"
"Sweetheart, I'm already here."
I leaned forward, my lips grazing his ear as I whispered lowly, "Rhonda Hurley."
I saw the realization hit him like a tidal wave after a second of confusion and his entire body tensed up. His cheeks flushed red and he swallowed loudly as he looked back at me, "You wouldn't."
"Try me."
"Come on, let me go, Angel. Please? I love you."
"I'm sure you do," I laughed as I let go of his arm. I grinned as I looked back to Sam and wrapped an arm around Dean's waist, "That enough humaliation for you?"
He nodded as he looked at Dean with amusement shining in his eyes, "What did you tell him? I've never seen him react like that before."
Dean stiffened and I slid my hand across his back reassuringly. I wasn't going to tell, but man, teasing him was so much fun.
"Trust me, you really don't want to know."
"Idjits."
O.o
I looked up at Dean innocently as he stood in front of me with his arms crossed. It was decided that Bobby and him would go down to the store while Sam stayed here with me. They were supposed to be leaving in a few minutes but Dean held me back, saying he wanted to 'talk to me'.
"So did you want to talk? Or do you want to keep standing there, looking all annoyed and sexy?"
"What the hell was that?"
"That was me– kicking your ass."
"You know that's not what I mean."
"Oh, you mean Rhonda?"
"I was nineteen!"
"C'mon, Dean," I slid my hands up the back of his neck as I kissed him, "Don't act like you didn't like it."
"Shit," he cursed quietly. I leaned back and couldn't keep from smiling as I saw him blushing again with his eyes slammed shut. I leaned forward and kissed him softly, trying to coax him into opening his eyes.
"C'mon, babe, it's not that bad."
"Please tell me they didn't show nineteen-year-old me in pink fucking panties."
"You got me there," I smirked as I met his green eyes, "Sadly, I didn't get to see your perfect ass in panties."
"Thank God."
"You could always still show me, if you wanted," I suggested innocently.
"No fucking way," he half-growled, half-laughed and I joined in laughing.
"Hey," his gaze softened as he met my eyes, "I have to go. Bobby's waiting for me."
"Be back soon?"
"I promise."
He kissed my forehead and turned to start walking away. Panicking slightly, I started to jog after him, "Dean!"
He turned just as I got to him, wrapping his arms around my wait as I grabbed his face and kissed him.
"Be careful, okay?"
"Don't worry, Angel. I'm coming back."
He started to walk away again, but I pulled his arm back and hit my head against his chest with a thud as I hugged him tightly.
"Ash– "
"I love you."
He stood there for a second, then hugged me back as he pressed his lips to the top of my head, "Hey, I love you, too."
"I just... I didn't know the next time I would be able to tell you," I whispered as I looked up at him.
"Baby, I'm gonna be fine. I'm comin' back in one piece, okay? You'll be able to tell me as soon as I get back."
He leaned down and kissed me gently, "Okay?"
"Yeah. Yeah, okay."
"I'll see you soon."
O.o
"Find anything?"
"Nope," I replied with boredom as I flipped a page of the book, "You?"
"Nothing."
"Great."
Sam had suggested we do research on anything relating on the apocalypse and how to stop it and, unsurprisingly, we had come up with nothing.
I closed the book I was skimming and as soon as I set it back on the table, Sam's phone buzzed loudly. He looked uneasily at me as he brought it up to his ear and my stomach fluttered with fear.
"Yeah?"
Sam sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose as he closed his eyes, "Are you serious? Please tell me you're joking.
"He's such an idiot. Is he okay?"
"Sam? What's wrong?"
"How far away are you?"
I swallowed thickly as Sam listened to the other side of the conversation. Was Dean okay? Was he hurt? I forced myself to take a deep breath as I started to panic. Panicking wouldn't help anything.
Sam snapped the phone shut, sighed, and looked at me, "They're fine. Just ran into a couple of demons."
I felt my stomach drop, "Did either of them get hurt?"
"Listen... He's going to look a lot worse than he is."
"I told him this would happen," I got up and started to pace around nervously, "But he's not, like, bleeding to death or anything, right?"
"No, no. He's fine, but he's, uh... Well, he got knocked out."
"So..?"
"I mean, he's still knocked out. Cold. And he probably still will be when they get back."
I nodded slightly, feeling like I was in a daze. This couldn't actually be happening, could it? There was no way Dean went to the store with Bobby and got beaten up and knocked out. He was smarter than that.
"Hey," I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked up to meet Sam's eyes, "He's going to be okay. Bobby just wanted me to warn you so you didn't freak out when we brought him in. Really, he's gonna be fine."
I nodded again, not really believing him. I had heard those words before.
O.o
I sat on the stairs as Sam and Bobby carried him in and set him down on the couch. They walked back outside to do who-knows-what and I got up and slowly made my way over to him.
Dean was lying on the couch, eyes closed, looking limp and lifeless. His bottom lip was split and he had a huge bruise over his left cheekbone. His shirt was torn to shreds and bloody, but I saw no signs of heavy bleeding.
I sighed and sat down on the ground right next to the couch, running my fingers through his hair gently. Tears started to prick behind my eyes and I just wiped them away as they slid down my cheek. I didn't care if I cried. The person I loved most in this world was lying, bloodied and broken, on the couch in front of me. If that wasn't a good enough reason to cry, then I didn't know what was.
