While everyone was gathering their wits and trying to figure out what happened, an EMS team arrived. Kensi was surprised at how quickly Eric was able to dispatch them. "Eric, good job; the ambulance is already here." Kensi told the tech guru.
"Thanks Kensi." He wasn't about to mention that all he did was call the EMS team that was already on site for the fight. The team got to work quickly and checked over the downed man and then turned their attention to Polson. After a thorough but quick check of Polson they determined that he was fine just coming off an adrenaline rush. The other man they determined needed to go to the hospital to make sure there was no internal bleeding. Kensi looked at the kid they nicknamed Pointdexter. "When do you go on duty?" She asked him.
"Not until tomorrow morning. But I'll stay with him. You..You know..if if you want me too, that is." He didn't want to miss out on something that was bigger than driving around in a squad car.
Kensi thought about this for a moment. She couldn't leave with the guy but somebody had to. "Kid, give me your id." He handed over his license. "Eric, run a check on LAPD officer Chad Lasarzek." She gave Eric all the info she had on the officer and waited while Eric ran him.
A couple of minutes later Eric replied that he came back clean. "Thanks Eric. Make sure this kid doesn't get in trouble and gets paid for what he's about to do."
"On it Kens."
"Officer do you have your service weapon with you?" She asked giving him back is ID.
"It's in the gun safe in the trunk of my car."
"Go get it and be back here ASAP. I mean run!" Kensi watched as he took off at a dead run heading for his car. She smiled and chuckled to herself thinking he was like a kid in a candy store. She hoped she hadn't gotten him in over his head. "As soon as we have an escort for him, you can take him." She said to the EMS team.
"No problem. He's not showing any life threatening signs. We just think he needs to get checked out. A crutch-bat to the kidney could do some damage." The EMS didn't actually chuckle but there was humor in his eyes.
She nodded her head and sat down next to Polson to wait for the young officer. "How are you doing?"
Polson looked at her, "I think you, all of you are not what I thought you were. You going to tell me what's going on?" Polson questioned.
Kensi chuckled, "Sit tight. You are going to need to come with us so we can sort it all out." She looked up and saw the officer returning. "That was quick."
Office Lasarzek arrived huffing and puffing. "Take a deep breath and calm down. You aren't going to do anyone any good if you pass out." She waited a couple of heartbeats before continuing, "Here is my card. You are to stay with him," she pointed to the man on the gurney, "no matter what. If someone comes to talk to him or take him away, stop them and call me. The only people who are allowed access to this man are me, those two guys over there," she pointed out Sam and Callen, "and the guy who was fighting. Clear?"
"Well...what about the doctors and stuff?"
Kensi rolled her eyes. "Of course they need access but you are to be in the room with him all the time. When he's alone, you stand guard outside the door. Ok?"
"Yes ma'am."
Kensi felt a twinge of wonder. Was Deeks this gungho when he started with the force? She shook off the question and continued, "I'll get you some help as soon as I can. But be ready for anything. The person who comes to help you will have a password," Kensi thought for a moment, "Cronuts". She looked at the young officer. He looked at her like she was crazy. "Cronuts is the password. If they don't say 'cronuts' when they arrive, they aren't from me and should not be allowed access to that man."
He stated that he understood and he, the EMS team and patient all left for the hospital. Kensi asked Eric to arrange someone to meet the young officer as she walked back over to Callen and Sam.
As Kensi was arranging the police escort for the injured man, Hetty, Callen, Nell and Bolat along with all of his people and whoever else remained had arrived in the arena.
Hetty looked to Bolat but held her hand out to indicate Callen, "I leave you in capable hands." She smiled at him then turned to Nell, "Ms. Jones, join me if you will." Both women left together. Once out of earshot of the rather large group of people, she pulled out her cell phone. She had started to dial when several men in security shirts were escorting a man, his arm held behind him, back into the arena. She looked at them and smiled. "Right through there gentleman if you will. You will find several people waiting for him." She continued her walk but addressed Nell, "Ms. Jones please contact the Chief of Police I think we need to get some assistance from them. Transportation and logistics to start with." Hetty finally put the phone to her ear, "Leon, we have a situation…"
Nell started her conversation with the Chief of Police in a similar manner, "Sir? I'm call on behalf of Hetty Lang. Your assistance is needed..." Both women walked out to the VIP parking area and got into Hetty's Jag both still talking on the phone.
"Yes Leon. I'm sure some of them are...And you will call him?...Thank you Leon. Yes…:" She turned her head to look at Nell, a question in her eyes. Nell, who was still on the phone with the Chief of Police, nodded her head. "LAPD headquarters while we work through it all." She waited for Director Vance to finish talking. Hetty smiled, "Yes he did. I'm sorry you didn't see it….hahaha. Yes Leon, I did win a tidy sum. Good night." She put her phone in it's appropriate spot, placed her hands on the steering wheel and turned to Nell. Seeing that Nell was off her call, "Shall we Ms. Jones? I believe we are needed at the Mission."
Nell braced herself. She remembered her first Christmas working with Hetty. Nell had secured a last minute flight home but due to a case she was going to miss it. When Hetty found out she offered to drive Nell to the airport. What a ride that was! From expecting to miss the plane she arrived at the gate with 10 minutes to spare! She made her flight and she had a happy Christmas with her family. Hetty turned the engine over and Nell felt the roar of the engine as it came to life. Say what you want about Hetty's driving (but only say it when you are certain she isn't around) she drove a sweet ride. Nell having earlier braced herself nodded her head and they were off.
Meanwhile Callen, Sam, Kensi and Deeks who arrived shortly after Kensi's return, got everyone brought together and secured, including the runaway that security had caught for them. They had all been searched, IDs that were found had been sent to Eric for information and everyone was just waiting for a ride. It was during this time that Callen has spotted how tired Deeks looked. He nudged Sam pointing to Deeks. Sam understood after just a quick glance at his fighter. He walked over to Deeks, "Go home. Get some rest."
"No man, I'm good. I can go for another couple of hours." Deeks tried to insist.
"Deeks, you are out on your feet. Go home; alternate ice and heat on those bruises." He could see the detective gearing up for an argument and cut him off, "You know what's going to happen next. We bring everybody back and talk to them; figure out what's going on. You need to rest so that if anything else does happen, you're ready for it."
"Sam...I'm fine."
Kensi who had been watching the exchange raised her eyebrows at this. "Deeks, aren't you the one who told me that people only use 'I'm fine' when they aren't but just wanna be stubborn?"
"That's just you Kensalina." Deeks countered with a smile.
"Kensi take him home. Pour him onto his sofa, leave him on the floor, whatever. Just get him home. Cuff him if you have to." Sam turned to hollar at Callen, "G! Car keys! Kensi is taking him home." Callen tossed Sam the keys without comment. Sam dropped the keys in Kensi's outstretched hand then returned to Callen.
Kensi turned to Deeks, "I don't have to cuff you do I?"
"If that's what you really want from me, all you have to do is say so, Princess." Deeks joked. "I'm good, Kensi. Really."
"And I really don't care. You're going home. The others can take care of whatever else is going on." His smile dropped as he prepared to argue but a determined look appeared on Kensi's face; a look that Deeks knew better than anyone meant business and arguing was fruitless. "Let's go," she grabbed his arm with one hand, his gear bag with the other and pulled him along. She knew he was wiped out and only fighting to stay there out of an overdeveloped sense of responsibility. He dropped his head to his chest in resignation and allowed his partner and friend to pull him out of the arena.
Hetty, through Nell arranged for the space and people needed to move everyone where they needed to be within the LAPD Headquarters. It took several hours before everyone involved or anyone who might have been involved was transported but in the end they had Jacoby & his people; the fighter, Crew and his people including the manager; Polson; Bolat and his people, as well as all the people from the other two groups. Eric had been given access to the interview rooms' cameras and mics, complaining the entire time because the cameras weren't as good as he was used to.
Sam & Callen via a secure video chat were discussing who everyone was with Eric and Nell. This included backgrounds and diplomatic status when Hetty appeared on the screen. "I have spoken with Director Vance and he in turn is going to contact the DCS and State. I suggest you get as much information out of them before State gets involved. I'm sure our brethren from the CIA will be in touch shortly as well."
"Thanks Hetty, but the question still remains, what is going on? I'm not even sure what questions to ask these guys. We have..."
But before he could start, Hetty held up her hand to stop him, "Thank you but I've already been briefed by Eric, Mr. Callen. I suggest you start with Bolat and find out what he's doing here. Be careful; he's a tricky bastard." Hetty turned her attention to Sam, "Mr. Deeks did well tonight, Mr. Hanna."
Sam smiled, "He sure did, Hetty. He did NCIS proud."
"And where is our Mr. Deeks?"
"Kensi took him home to get some rest. I imagine he'll be back soon but Kensi will keep him there as long a she can." Sam smirked. The whole team knew that if anyone could keep Deeks contained for any length of time, his partner would be the one to do it.
"Indeed." Hetty's smile dropped. "The clock is ticking gentlemen. I suggest you get to it." And she left the screen.
Callen turned his attention to the blonde man that now filled the screen. "Bolat, Eric, what do you got?"
"Not much. He does have diplomatic immunity. He's an attache' to the Kazakhstan Embassy. His dossier states his speciality is in the energy and oil fields."
Callen and Sam looked at each other. "Oil?" Callen said.
"Could this whole thing be about oil drilling?" Sam questioned back. "Our current relationship with Kazakhstan is pretty much based on their oil and mineral deposits; ever since '93 when Chevron started drilling there. Lots of people would like to see that interrupted."
"Let's find out." Callen said as they headed into the interview room that Bolat Niyazov had been placed in.
Callen walked into the room and sat down opposite of Bolat. Sam took up his usual position just to the right and slightly behind Callen. "Mr. Niyazov what brings you to LA?" Callen started with an easy question.
"I'm here to watch the fight, of course." He was smiles and exuded camaraderie. "Your fighter, he did well, yes? Which makes me ask, why is a fight trainer here talking to me now?" This was of course directed at Sam.
"See that's interesting." Callen said. "I didn't see you at the fight. I saw you in a hallway during the fight. Talking to a lot of other people who weren't watching the fight." Callen gave a beat. "Care to explain?"
Bolat just leaned back in his chair. "I have diplomatic immunity. I don't have to answer any of your questions."
"That's true, G. He doesn't." Sam confirmed. "But then we just have to go back to Hetty and let her know how uncooperative he was." This was not the first time they used Hetty's name in an interview. What worked once, should work again.
Bolat just relaxed further into his chair and looked at Callen. "Hetty doesn't frighten me. That жынды жын* is formidable but I have diplomatic immunity."
"Ok then." Callen said as he turned to Sam. "So let's you and I talk and he can sit here and not talk. You know what I think is going on? I think someone wants to hurt the US-Kazakhstan relationship. I think they are trying to make us not trust the other."
"That's possible, G. Or someone just wants us to think that's what they want when really they want something else. Maybe access to mineral rights?" Sam countered.
Bolat just continued to smile at them. He'd been in this game longer than either of the two men in front of him. He found their attempts at goading him humorous at best; dull at the very least.
"Kazakhstan shares a border with more than China and Russia. Oh! China was there in that hallway. Maybe something is going on there. Maybe something that will destabilize relations in the region."
There was a small tick under Bolat's eye that neither man saw but the eagle eyes watching in ops caught it. "Callen, he twitched; a muscle under his left eye." Nell informed him.
"I bet you're right, G. I bet someone is ratcheting tensions up in the region. But why are they here in our country?" Sam puzzled.
Callen pointed his finger at Sam, "That's a good question. I bet they were attempting to find some way to either help or hinder whoever is making things tense."
Nell confirmed that Bolat's body language and facial cues confirmed they were on the right track.
Callen turned to Bolat, "Still don't wanna talk to us?" Bolat shook his head. Callen stood to leave and then addressed his partner, "Oh Sam? Did you get his passport or ID or anything?"
"Didn't find a thing on him G."
"Oh! So we have no proof he is who he says he is." Callen turned and looked at Bolat, "I guess to be safe, we should book him; until we find out for sure. I think County is the best place for that. I think Deeks mentioned once that they are...efficient in their processing procedures."
Bolat interjected, "Hetty confirmed my identity. And I still have diplomatic immunity."
Neither Callen now Sam responded to Bolat's objection. They were leaving the room and Sam laughed while he pulled out a line that Deeks had used before, "Yea, if this guy's lucky he'll be able to make his phone call sometime around Christmas."
They didn't wait for him to respond. They just closed the door behind them as they left the room knowing that Nell was monitoring the man.
"That was pretty much a bust. At least we know it has something to do with destabilization of the region. What do you think, Jacoby next?" Callen asked.
Sam considered for a moment. "I don't think so. I say we try the Chinese guys. See what they have to say about it."
"Eric? What do you have for us on the Chinese contingent?" Callen asked.
They are Zoeng Fengge, Wong Lewei, Lau Shanyuan. I've sent their photos to your phones." As Callen & Sam scrolled through the pictures, Eric continued, "Mr. Zoeng is a security specialist from the Consul General Embassy here in LA. The other two work for him as security guards."
"What do you have for the others that were there? The security guards? Where they real or what?"
"I'm still trying to find IDs on them. I've run them through several databases and have gotten nothing. I drilled down on the IDs you sent earlier and they all dead ended."
Callen & Sam looked at each other. "What does that sound like to you?" Callen asked Sam.
Sam's mouth turned down at the corners and his lips thinned out, "CIA, G. Sounds just like CIA." He glanced around the room while he gathered his thoughts, "Anything else, Eric?"
"Not yet. Nell is checking with some of her 'other' connections. We'll let you know if anything comes of it."
"Thanks Eric." Callen said and turned to Sam. "Jacoby then while Eric and Nell finish the checks?"
"You want me to do this or are you going in as Deeks?" Sam countered.
That gave Callen pause.
