Thank you so much for the lovely reviews guys. I want to dedicate this chapter to DayLightDove, my 20th reviewer! Also, thanks to Cat Lunanoff who noticed my mistake, I didn't realize that I wrote egg-haunt instead of egg-hunt :D.
Chapter 6
The One Last Light
Jack woke up to find himself in total darkness. Panic took over him as he didn't know where he was nor how he had gotten there. His head was aching and he tried to bring a hand to his forehead but failed. His eyes widened in shock at the realization that he couldn't move. Every single muscle of his body was too weak and he could barely feel the sense of touch. He tried to speak but no sound made it through his mouth. He was scared and had no idea what to do. Tears formed in his eyes and all he could do was just lay there, helpless. He gathered all of his strength and whispered.
"Pitch…" His voice was so weak, even he could barely hear what he had just said. It also brought a painful cough which hurt his chest like it was burning. However the answer to his call was immediate. When Pitch stepped into the room, the torches lit up, so Jack could relax at the thought that he was save in his room.
"I'm sorry you woke up alone, Jack. I went out only for a while" Pitch said as he rushed to the winter sprite, kneeling beside his bed. He grabbed Jack's wrist to check on his pulse. Normal. He then started stroking the boy's hand with one hand and his white hair with another, so as to comfort him. "I haven't left your side for the past few days"
"H-how long have I been asleep?" Jack asked and his eyes widened.
"5 days" Pitch replied and watched the shock at the child's face. He sighed "You had internal bleeding. Fortunately as a sprite your wounds heal fast. You might feel pain now, but you're going to be alright. What happened to you? I haven't sensed that amount of fear for a long time"
"I-I have no idea. I started coughing and choking and I passed out" Jack said skipping the mystery man part. That wasn't the cause of his sickness and Pitch didn't have to know about that. "This time it was stronger"
"How many times did it happen?" Pitch asked, tilting his head to a side.
"Only two" Jack said and shut his eyes at the pain.
"I'm so sorry, Jack. I should have paid more attention to you. I don't know how I couldn't have noticed that you were sick" Pitch said, his voice full of guilt. It was the first time Jack heard his voice like that.
"Don't blame yourself, Pitch, it wasn't your fault" Jack disagreed and felt himself drifting back into sleep "You're the best father" he said smiling and closed his eyes.
"Rest, son" Pitch said and smiled back, fixing Jack's blankets. He looked worried at the sweat on the boy's face. Jack was shivering and since he was a winter sprite he shouldn't. Maybe it was only after the shock that went through his body and a little bit of warmth would help. "I need to pay the Guardians a visit. I'll be right back" He said and got to his feet.
"What happened to the guardians after Easter?" Jack asked weakly, not opening his eyes.
"They lost almost all of his believers. I'll finish them off today" Pitch said and grinned.
"C-can I come too?"
"You're in no shape, Jack" Pitch sighed and closed the door behind him.
Jack groaned as he was left alone again. He's been waiting for this moment for so long and he would miss it because of the stupid sickness. He felt as strength was slowly coming back to his muscles. He moved his fingers and then his hand. He smiled, maybe it wasn't that bad. He was finally able to turn his head, seeing his staff lying on a cupboard he concentrated all of his strength in his hand to reach for it.
He smiled satisfied as he felt a wave of energy that came with the touch. He brought his staff close to him and raised himself on elbows. He leaned against the wall and breathed heavily. The pain was slowly fading away, maybe he would be able to see the last stand of the Guardians. He swung his legs over the edge of his bed and took several deep breaths before getting up, using the staff for support.
He walked out of the room and went through the gloomy corridor. He frowned in concentration to recall the mental map he had made. It was a good time to search for the mysterious library. As far as he was concerned, the way was beginning in the globe room. He looked around and remembered the way down the stars in the north of the lair.
Checking an unknown way in a dark place is never a good idea. Like from a child's nightmare, getting lost in a scary maze with no clue where to go, add some frightening noises with disturbing melody and you have a horror movie, especially when Nightmares were jumping on his way from time to time. But when he got deeper into the corridors, far from the part he knew like the back of his hand, there was only silence and unpenetrated darkness, fortunately he had taken a torch before, so he could see where he was going. It really was not a good idea. He got totally lost and started to think that meeting with the man, who showed him the mysterious library, was just a dream and there was nothing to look for.
Right after this thought came through his mind, he found something. There were double wooden door, hopefully for him not locked. He pushed it and looked around the room filled with shelves covered by books. There were cobwebs which meant that no one has visited the place for a long time. He placed the torch in a holder and walked to the sculpture with the old book he had seen in the vision. When he brought his hand to the book it suddenly opened making him step back in surprise. The pages were giving pale light, so he could read it clearly. Actually, the page it had opened on was probably random, though it was something that caught his attention;
Chapter V – Light and Dark
There was a maiden and there was a man. The maiden – Death was her name, guardian of the afterlife, the man was called Tsar and was associated with life. They were living in a village among humans, rising their kids. Two of them were born within shadows and the other two in pure daylight. They gained the powers like their parents. Their son, born in light was Sanderson, the one to bring dreams, their daughter Katarina became the guardian of fire, to warm humans' hearts. Petter and Kozmotis were born in darkness, the first one was guardian of fear, the second was bringing nightmares to people as to keep the balance.
But evil was supposed to arise. The shadows that have always followed Death were consuming her good soul. She was supposed to end lives of old and sick but the evil put its claws on her and she became the greatest enemy to the whole world. She created her own kingdom which she wanted to fill with souls she took and the deamon who became her helpers. Tsar had to stand against his former lover, knowing that he wouldn't be able to defeat her on his own, he had to leave their children and rise to the moon, becoming Man in the Moon, from where he would bring to the world of spirits the ones who died an honorable death. The new spirits were the guardians, who were supposed to protect humans from Death's demons.
However Death created something opposite to the guardians – the bringers. The bringers were sprites whose purpose was to bring misery to humans. Many spirits have fallen for Death's offer. Seeing that MiM created spirits who would watch over the peace on the world. There were three of them; Father Time, Destiny and Justice. But when Death collected enough bringers for her army she declared war to Tsar. Their children decided to stand against their evil mother, however there was one who was not sure about the side he should choose. Death convinced him to side with her, promising that she would teach him powerful black magic. Since then, Petter has become the bringer of fear and death.
Death knowing that Kozmotiz was also born within darkness decided to get him on her side. Kozmotiz was fighting the evil within him for a long time.
Chapter VI – The Golden Age
When the great war of the golden age came, Mim gathered all of his creations against Death's army od bringers, demons, fearlings and dream pirates. It lasted for over a century, Kozmotiz, Katarina and Sanderson leading their huge armies against evil. During the battle Petter killed his brother Kozmotiz letting the fearlings consume him. He then was reborn but not the same, he was infected by the evil and no longer could fight it. He became the bringer of nightmares feeding on fear, however he wasn't under his mother's commands. He decided to stay alone in the darkness, probably not wanting to bring harm to those who remained on MiM side. Since then his name has been Pitch Black, the boogeyman.
Sanderson tried to find his brother, but Pitch was nowhere to be found. Their sister, Katarina after the loss of her dear brother decided to became human and she was gone without a trance. Petter, proud of himself that he made Pitch become the boogeyman probably returned with his mother to her afterlife kingdom to rebuild the army.
The Great Four Guardians were formed, chosen by Tsar; Sanderson, Nickolas North, Toothiana and the last remaining Pooka Bunnymund, so the world would be a save place again.
Jack finished reading and stood there deep in thought. That was why Pith was… the way he was. It was not his choice to reborn as a bringer, it was not his fault that he was feeding on fear. It all now made sense to him. But then other thought hit him. He would have never expected that Sandy was Pitch's brother. He had now even more questions than he had had before reading the book. He needed to see pitch as soon as he could.
"He must be fighting the guardians right now, I can't miss it!" He said and walked out of the library. Now he was so unsure what to do. He of course wouldn't stand against his care-taker but the guardians were just trying to protect people. Maybe he could bring peace between them? Seems like everything depends on him…
He was so grateful that he quickly find the way back. He threw a quick look at the globe, there was just one light remaining, who could it be? There was no time to think, he had enough thoughts in his head. He flew out of the lair, fresh air made him feel even better, he still wasn't in his best shape. Monitoring streets of Burgess, which wasn't easy at night, he finally found sounds of a battle. He rushed there.
He saw Pitch, standing on a cloud formed of shadows, aiming an arrow on Sandy. The guardians were barely standing on their feet fighting the Nightmares with their last strength. Not thinking twice Jack threw himself towards Sand spirit and froze the arrow just in time, so it changed it's way. Pitch looked confused and after some time realized that Jack has appeared.
"What are you doing here? I told you to stay and rest" Pitch said, his voice angry.
"Jack! I knew you would choose to side with us!" Tooth said happily from the ground.
"No, I am NOT" Jack quickly denied.
"Told ya" the Pooka said.
"Why did you froze my arrow? What were you thinking?" Pitch demanded an answer.
"You couldn't kill your brother!" Jack replied. He thought he did good.
"What makes you think he is my bro-"
"I have many questions, Pitch, please leave the Guardians, I need answers from you" Jack pleaded. Pitch looked at Sanderson who showed some marks above his head.
"I must finish them" Pitch said coldly.
"Actually, we still have one believer, and till he is, we will never surrender" Bunnymund spoke, showing one of North's mini-globes.
"How is it posiible, there is NO remaining light, I made sure of that" Pitch frustrated.
"Pitch please…" Jack said from behind him.
"Don't get into my way boy, I won't stop until that last believing child will be consumed by fear"
"What if…" North started "The last believing child is…"
All the eyes were now on Jack and he realized why.
"…Is the immortal child"
Jack Frost…
Well, it seems like I've been death for the long time and now I come back to life. Nothing explains me for so long update, I guess xd
