Lin was sleeping peacefully in the guest bedroom of the Zaofu estate, when a five-year-old Baatar junior and four year old Kuvira wondered into her room.
They both climbed onto the bed, and stared for a second at the peaceful Chief of police. "Baatar, are you sure this is okay? What if she gets angry?"
"She won't. She promised to help."
The two children began to argue, causing the woman next to them to rouse from her slumber. Lin found their childish bickering rather cute, but it started to get annoying. So in an act of light hearted aggression. Lin sat up and quickly wrapped an arm around each child and brought them back down to the bed with her. "You two talk too much."
"Ugh, aunt Lin. you're squishing me."
"Good."
"No it's not! You promised to help make pancakes."
"Junior, what time is it?"
"Six bu-"
"Sleep for another thirty minutes."
Baatar raised his head as much as Lin's arm allowed, to see that Kuvira had burrowed into her side and had already fallen asleep. That has to be a record. "Fine but thirty minutes only." Lin relaxed her hold on Baatar, knowing that the little boy would stick to his word, and he did. He stared at the bedside table clock, watching the seconds tick by, until the big hand reached six. "Aunty Lin, it's six thirty."
"Ugh, you are such a party pooper." Letting out a groan, the earthbender sat up and got out of the bed. "Why do you two want to make pancakes anyway? I thought you have a chef."
Kuvira and Baatar Junior followed Lin into the kitchen and took a seat at the kitchen table as Lin got out the ingredients. "We want to make them for Su. They always make her happy."
"Why do you want to make her happy, Kuvira?"
"Because she's been really grumpy lately."
"She doesn't want to be. She's just pregnant and that can make someone feel really uncomfortable. Alright, who wants to sive the flower into a bowel?"
Baatar came running over to her, with a huge smile on his face. "I'll do it!"
Lin raised the earth under his feet, allowing him to reach the bench for better access. Lin measured the flour and put it into the sive. Watching cautiously as Baatar tried his hardest to keep the flour in one spot. "Alright, Kuvira, you can pour in the milk."
Kuvira earthbended herself onto the counter top and poured the milk into the measuring cup before adding it to the mixture. "Can I stir?"
"Ask Baatar."
The young earthbender looked at her friend with pleading eyes. "Only if I get to beat in the eggs and cook them."
"Deal!"
Baatar cracked the egg and then gave the batter to Kuvira. Pulling the bowl into her lap, she stuck her tongue out in concentration as she stirred the mixture, trying to make sure all the ingredients were combined before releasing it back onto the counter.
Lin took the batter and turned on the stove before pouring it into little circles. "When a lot of bubbles appear and pop, you can flip it. Got it kid?"
"Got it."
Lin picked up Kuvira and sat down at the kitchen table. "Let's fix your hair." Undoing the hair tie, she began to run her fingers through the black silky hair, getting the knots out with ease. Just as she finished putting it into a braid, Su walked into the kitchen with a two year old Huan on her hip.
"Something smells great."
Kuvira slid off of the older woman's lap and ran over to the pregnant woman, a huge smile on her face. "We made you pancakes!"
"Thank you Kuvira. I could really eat some right now. Lin can you please take Huan from me?"
"Sure." Standing up, Lin took her nephew from her sister. "Take a seat Su." She did as she was told, much to the relief of her swollen feet.
"Here you go mum. Kuvira and I made them for you." Baatar placed the plate down in front of his mother and kneeled on the chair next to her, to watch her reaction when she finally took a bite.
Su picked up her knife and fork and cut into the pancake. Taking it into her mouth, she let out a moan of satisfaction. "Mm, these are good. Thank you, you two. Why did you make these for me?"
"Because you've been very angry lately and pancakes always make you happy."
Su cocked an eyebrow at her sister, who had a smug smirk on her face. "You shouldn't be smiling. You're going to have kids one day and then you will know what I'm going through."
"That won't be for another few years. So for now, I'm going to lay back and watch you get fat."
"I hate you."
"Love you too sis."
