Chapter 8: It Gets Worse

Project Pegasus

"Blue Shield, can you get the scientists out of here?" Shipwreck asked the blue-clad security chief.

"No problem." He nodded. He gestured to the scientists. "Come on, guys. Let's leave these guys here to do their work."

"I'll come along in case you need some backup." Agent Gail Runciter followed, the SHIELD Agents with her except for Vaughn.

"Wesley, you and the kids get that monster to the magma tap." Cover Girl ordered.

"The Joes are letting those kids handle the monster?" Dr. Reznek frowned in concern when she overheard that.

"From what I heard, the Misfits were formed to help deal with stuff like this." Blue Shield reassured. "The Joes taught those kids. I'm sure they'll be fine. And Wesley is with them."

"I don't know, Blue Shield..." Dr. Vaughn frowned, glancing at the battle. "I really don't like the way those gems on the bands were glowing. Something tells me something really bad is going to happen..."

"Hold it!" The lead AIM man ordered. "Band boy, you are coming with us!"

"Make me!" Wesley roared, his bands' gems glowing. He formed a construct of a large fist and lashed it out, knocking the AIM men aside with grunts and groans. An impressed Pietro whistled.

"Okay, that's impressive."

"Uh, friends?" Xi pointed out. "Monster."

"What monster?" Pyro blinked.

"RRRARRRRGH!" The metal monster roared in rage as it started spewing more of its acid everywhere.

"Oh, right. Him."

"DUCK!" Lance yelled. The Misfits, Joes, and AIM soldiers all scattered as the creature spewed more of its acid spit everywhere.

"That bloody thing is going to eat a hole in the ground if he keeps spewing that stuff!" Lila exclaimed.

"Let's get this thing to the magma tap, quickly!" Lance suggested. "I have an idea."

"We could use one!" Pietro yelped.

"Maybe if we offer it pizza. Everyone likes pizza." Pyro suggested. Pietro sighed.

"John...just...just stop talking. Please."

"Pyro may have a valid plan here." Xi piped up. "The creature may only be hungry."

"Xi, why are you encouraging him?" Pietro groaned.

"Xi, you got your katana?" Lance asked.

"Yes, why?"

"Do you think you can cut off the creature's hand?"

"Considering that thing's skin is acidic, that may not be advisable. Katanas are difficult to maintain, and hard to repair."

"I'll do it." Wesley offered.

"The acid that thing puts out can eat your constructs, man. Are you sure-?" Lance began.

"It won't be like containing the thing or blocking its acid spit." Wesley countered. "All I gotta do is make a sword and cut off the hand."

"But the metal the creature's skin is made of." Lila countered. "Never mind the acid! If it's strong enough to withstand a sharp construct you made..."

"Lila, you're playing brainiac now?" Pietro wailed. "We got a giant robo-monster trying to kill us, and you're worried about the metal it's made from?!"

"It's an important point, Mr. Ambiguous!" Lila snapped.

"Okay, that joke has stopped being funny when the Olympics last came to Los Angeles." Pietro scoffed.

"That was in 1984, you goofy-!"

"Knock it off, you two!" Lance ordered. "Oh, that takes me back..."

"Can't we just set fire to it?" Pyro suggested, holding up his flamethrowers.

"That's your answer to everything, flamebrain!" Pietro groaned.

"Pyro's not always got the right idea, but least he's suggesting something! The hell you doing, Silverhead?" Lila jumped in defense of Pyro.

"Kiddies, we ain't gonna get anywhere by snappin' at each other." Wesley told the Misfits. "Only one way to find out if that thing can take an energy sword." He glared up at the creature. It was taking on the Joes and the AIM men.

"We'll help distract it, and you make the blow." Lance ordered Wesley.

"You got it." The Texan test pilot nodded. He created a construct of a sword in his hand.

"Alright, guys..." Lance set his jaw, glaring at the creature. "Let's do this! Misfits away!"

"Let's fire this sucker up!" Pyro cackled, igniting his flamethrowers. Using his pyrokinetic powers, St. John created several fireballs. "Hey, Robot Monster! Let me light a fire in yer belly! Hahahahahahaha!" He cackled crazily as he pitched the fireballs at the monster.

Foom! Foom! Foom!

The fireballs smacked into the back of the creature's head, making it turn to the mutants and snarl.

"Kids!" Cover Girl yelled in concern.

"We got this!" Lila pulled an arrow from her quiver and loaded it into her crossbow. At the same time, Xi pulled out a group of explosive shuriken from a pouch he had slung over his shoulder. Lila aimed. "Now, Xi!"

"Right!" The reptilian artificial mutant nodded.

Twee!

Lila fired her arrow, and at the same time, Xi pitched his shuriken.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

The arrow and the shuriken hit the creature right between the eyes, making it roar in rage and pain. However, Lila's arrow also had another trick. When it went off, a viscous black substance covered the creature's eyes.

"Ha!" Lila grinned triumphantly, pumping her fist. "Gotta give Trinity credit. These trick arrows are awesome!"

"Nice job, Starway and Xi!" Alpine complimented the two Misfits, giving the thumbs up.

"The SOB is blinded! Ha ha!" Shipwreck laughed.

"Get ready, men." The lead AIM man ordered, holding up a hand. "We have to wait for the right moment to take the man and the bands..."

"Now, Wesley!" Lance ordered.

"He'd better hurry!" Lila yelped. "Look!" She pointed at the creature's face. The black gel-like substance started to boil and bubble, smoke arising from the area it was covering. A hissing sound like a snake speaking through a microphone could be heard.

"Aw crud, it's eating away the blinding stuff!" Pietro winced.

"YAHHH!" Wesley flew in, and with one mighty slash...

CHANK!

The creature roared in rage and pain as William Wesley cleanly cut the creature's right hand off.

"Got it!" Wesley whooped.

"Nice work, Wesley!" Lance encouraged. "Now get that hand and fly it to the magma tap!"

"Are you sure that'll work, Lance?" Lila asked. "We know nothing about this creature."

"She's right, Avalanche." Xi nodded in agreement. "For all we know, that creature may have a sort of regenerative ability. It could literally regrow the hand."

"Which means, we may be boned." Pietro quipped. "Ask not for whom the bone bones, it bones for us. We are boned. Look up 'boned' in the dictionary, we are next to it." Lance sighed.

"I know it's a gamble, guys, but it's the only shot we have." The earth-shaker explained.

"I got it!" Wesley called out, showing the he had the hand in a cube-shaped construct. "Unknown to anyone, the lead AIM man subtly tapped a signal in his glove.

"Good work, Wesley!" Shipwreck grinned.

"Get it to the magma tap, quick!" Lance ordered. "The creature might follow you!"

"Right!" Wesley nodded. "Hey monster!" He hovered in the air, the gems glowing more intensely and an aura of golden light surrounding his body. "Come and get me! I got your hand!" The creature roared at the test pilot. He started to fly off, when...

Boom!

The ceiling blew open, raining pieces all over the area.

"Aw, geez!" Wesley yelped. Pouring his will into the bands, he made them form an energy dome over the area, covering the Joes and the Misfits. The creature charged towards the dome, but it was stopped by some of the roof coming down on it. The AIM men were forced to scatter, as Wesley was unable to get them under his dome. However, to make his dome, Wesley had to drop the creature's hand. The hand landed palm-upwards with a metallic clank. The dome did a fine job protecting the heroes from the falling ceiling. When the debris finished falling, Wesley released the dome. "Uhn..." The Texan test pilot groaned, holding his head. "I'm not feeling so good..."

"Kids!" The Joes yelled in concern, running towards the Misfits.

"We're all okay!" Lance waved. Xi looked around and noticed something.

"Pyro is missing." The Cobra-created being remarked.

"Oh, no..." Shipwreck groaned.

"We gotta find him." Cover Girl looked around. A loud banging could be heard from a door.

"Hey! HEY!" Pyro yelled, pounding at the door. "How do I get out of here?!"

"How did he-?" A confused Xi blinked.

"He's Pyro." Lila shook her head, chuckling. "That's how."

"For God's sake, Pyro..." Pietro grumbled, stomping to the door and opening.

"Thanks, mate!" The Australian pyrokinetic grinned widely as he walked out. "It was dark in there." The speedster sighed.

And this guy manages to write gothic romance novels. The silver-haired speedster sighed. Idiot savant, thy name is St. John Allerdyce.

"Is that thing dead?" Alpine asked, pointing at the rubble that the creature was buried under.

"That thing might still be alive." Wesley answered. "I had to drop the hand to make that dome...huh?" He looked up. Nearby, the dropped amputated hand was twitching.

"What're you looking at, Tex...oh." Shipwreck blinked. "Guys..." The other heroes looked up. A large AIM craft hovered over the building. "Aw, crud."

Well, well, well! Looks like things are ramping up! What insanity will happen next? Can our hereos save the day? How can they stop AIM? Is the creature dead? Find out in the next chapter! Suggestions needed badly!
