"Do you have any idea why Harley Quinn would take you? She went to a lot of trouble to get you," a police officer asked me. We were sitting in an interrogation room in the headquarters, a blanket draped over my shoulders.

"I-I don't know," I said, shaking my head. It was half-true I supposed. Still, it was the first lie I'd told them that night.

"No connections?"

"I'd met her once before," I said, which was the truth. I'd only seen Harley Quinn in person twice. "But why would she take sudden interest in me?" I asked, bowing my head.

"That's what we want to know."

"Did they escape?" I asked, my voice wavering a bit.

"Yes. They also found time to free Jervis tetch and Poison Ivy in the chaos," The officer explained, patting me on the shoulder. "If they bug you at all, just call us, okay?" She nodded to me, writing a few final notes in the little memo pad she held. "You're free to go home. Officer Joone will drive you, if you want," she said, not even looking up.

"Thanks," I said, sliding nervously out of my chair and walking towards the door.

"No problem. Just doing our job," The officer said, a slight smile playing on her lips. I stepped out of the room, pulling the damp blanket closer against my shoulders.

I didn't really know what to think of my situation. I didn't feel angry or scared. I didn't feel anything.

Just... emptiness.

I was happy that my friends were safe, I supposed. But at the same time… What havoc would they wreak on everyone else's lives now? What was I supposed to feel?

I figured a talk with Professor Cook might help.

"Gotham University Earth Science offices. This is Cook speaking."

"Hello, sir. This is Sable," I said, my voice wavering. I was stuck in an old payphone outside of my apartment. My cell phone had been completely fried in the water.

"Ah, hello Sable! Are you alright?" He asked. I inhaled deeply and replied,

"I don't know. Could I… talk with you some time? I just need to talk about this whole thing with someone who'd understand."

"By all means! Come right on over and we'll talk!" He said. "I'm honored that you trust me so much."

"You're free right now?" I asked, feeling a little better now that he had agreed to talk.

"Yes I am. I'm just in my office grading for now. If you come right now we can talk before my next meeting."

"Thank you, sir. I'll be there in a minute," I said, sighing and hanging up the ancient phone.

When I got to the office, Professor Cook was sitting there, reading a newspaper and looking troubled.

"Welcome, Sable. Please, sit down," he said, moving a stack of papers so that I could sit across from him. "I'm going to sound a bit like a psychologist here… but how are you feeling?"

"I don't really know, sir. I'm so… confused," I said, blinking. "I'm mad at them, but I'm still happy that they're okay and everything…" I sighed and shook my head.

"I'm sorry about all this, Sable. It is largely my fault, as I edged you on to become their friend. You see, I always feel bad for Jonathan. He always seems to be alone..."

""That's just it, Professor! I want to be their friend. I want to help them… but it appears that I'm not helping in the slightest."

"Harley Quinn was wrong to betray your trust like she did, but I still think that you are helping at least a little. I wouldn't stop being their friend now."

"I wasn't planning on it. I like them a lot, really. I just… need to sort out my thoughts," I said, still unsure of myself. Was it safe for me to continue associating with them? I really hoped so. Frankly, they were about the only people I associated with outside of work and family.

The fact of the matter was that I should cease to associate with them. It was dangerous of me. I watched as they set The Joker, The Joker, free without even trying to stop them. I was endangering a whole city for the selfish reason of wanting to keep my friends

"Calm down Sable," Professor Cook said smoothly, bringing me back to reality. I was breathing heavily. "Just calm down."

I sighed and put my head in my hands.

You aren't stopping now, are you? That voice. Again.

Yes… No… I don't know! I thought, my mind was spinning and throbbing. Harley's headache was slowly coming back to me. The voice laughed, it's lifeless voice echoing in my head.

"I'll be fine, Professor. I'm sorry for bothering you, and thank you," I said, getting up. I needed to go home and get a painkiller.

It also might be a good idea to get some help with the voice in my head. I thought, not even caring if my voice heard.
