I got home in the evening, pretty glad to be back in my apartment. I sighed, rubbing my temples. I had work in about an hour and a half, and still had to make dinner.
"Canned soup it is," I said, pulling down a can of chicken noodle soup from my cupboard. I put it on the stove to start cooking and opened up my laptop. Some research of my own wouldn't hurt.
Voices in head treatment. I thought as I typed, watching as several articles opened up. I smiled and started reading.
My reading seemed to reinstate what Jonathan had told me, but also said that the most effective forms of treatment were medication and therapy. Two things Jonathan could not or would not produce. It was probably going to be necessary for me to visit a licensed psychologist to get the medication.
I was halfway through my second website when a message popped up on my screen. Confused, I opened it up.
E. N.: Are you available? Something came up.
Volcano227: I've got work in about an hour.
E. N.: Meet us at Jonathan's warehouse after you're done.
Volcano227: Is this Edward?
E. N.: Who else?
Volcano227: How did you get my e-mail?
E. N.: How did I get your phone number?
Volcano227: You're infuriating.
E. N.: Thanks. I try.
E. N. has logged off.
"What?" I asked the computer. "Something came up? I need more information than that!"
I just rolled my eyes and returned to my reading. After a few moments I heard a burbling and glanced over at the stove.
The soup was boiling over the pan.
"Crap."
The warehouse was a long ways from my workplace, so I caught a bus. Whatever Edward wanted to tell me about, it was probably at least somewhat important.
By the time I got there, it was nearly one in the morning. I opened the door, finding three silhouettes sitting in the corner with a lamp, playing cards.
"I'm here," I said quietly, making my way over to them. "Sorry it took so long. The next shift came late." I smiled and looked over the three faces, stopping at the last one. "Who's this?"
"Oh, you haven't met Jervis yet," Jonathan said. "Jervis, this is Sable Tate. Sable, Jervis Tetch, or The Mad Hatter."
"Pleased to meet you, dear," Jervis said, smiling and showing his large buckteeth. I smiled back and shaking his hand.
"Thank you," I sat down raising my eyebrows at Edward. "So… what 'came up'?"
"Jervis found something the other day during the breakout. Jervis?" Edward held out his hand and Jervis handed him a slip of paper. I took it and looked it over. It was a long list of chemicals, some I recognised and others I didn't. Some of them were underlined in red.
"What's all this?"
"It was a list I kept hidden under my mattress back at Arkham," Jonathan said, taking the list from me. "I let Jervis out after freeing the Joker, and we were running behind him when this fell from his pocket."
"Did he underline these ones? What for?"
"As far as I can tell, this combination will make a potent poison. It would kill in no more than three minutes."
"Is that why he went all the way back to Arkham? Just for that paper?"
Edward spoke up. "It seems like it. He got caught too easily, so he must have had a purpose for doing so."
"Why would he want to make a poison?" I asked, staring at the list of chemicals again.
"We are talking about the Joker," Edward pointed out.
"True, but.. still… it doesn't quite seem right. Is he planning to flood the whole city with this, or is he just going to kill a few specific people?"
"That's what we need to find out and where you come in," Jonathan said.
"Wait… why are you guys investigating this? I mean, why do you care at all?" I asked.
"I am rather curious as to why The Joker would get himself put into Arkham for a document of mine. He could have just asked me, but he instead chose to break into Arkham."
"I want to solve this. It's like a puzzle," Edward said, shrugging. I rolled my eyes.
"I just want to help the March Hare," Jervis said quietly. I had almost forgotten he was there.
"The… March Hare?" I asked
"He means me," Jonathan said, shaking his head. "Regardless, this is an event that I have personal reason to look into, so I would like to ask you for your help."
"Well, okay. What do you want me to do?"
"Excuse us for a moment," jonathan said, gesturing for me to follow him out of the circle of light that the little lamp put out. I saw Edward and Jervis exchanging glances and giving me and Jonathan both skeptical looks.
"Okay…" I said slowly, standing up and following him.
Once we'd left the light and walked out of earshot, Jonathan lit a match.
"What was the purpose of this?" I asked him, staring at the flame as he lit a candle sitting on a dusty shelf. Next to where the candle used to sit was several cans of food. This was the scarecrow's kitchen.
"I didn't think you wanted Edward or Jervis to hear this. I need you to go to Harley and ask for therapy for your voice problem. She'll undoubtedly say yes, and give you an opportunity to investigate a little," He said.
"You want me… Why can't you guys just go and ask? Aren't you friends or something."
"I get the feeling that we weren't supposed to know about this activity, so asking would be fruitless, and may even endanger us. We never really know." He stopped and reached up to a higher shelf, pulling down a book.
"What's that?" I asked. Instead of answering, he opened the book. Inside was a gap, much like a box. It held folded pieces of paper covered in spidery writing, a few glass vials filled with unknown liquids, and several different pieces of technology that I couldn't identify. He picked one of these out and held it out to me.
"Take this when you go. It's a recording device. I will be listening on the other side and can pick out things worth investigating." I nodded and slipped the recording device into my pocket.
"Is around two in the afternoon okay?" I asked. Jonathan nodded and blew the candle out.
"Let's get back. No doubt the other two are getting curious."
"What are you being so secretive about?" Edward asked as soon as we had reentered the circle of light.
"None of your business," I answered. Edward just rolled his eyes.
"Another puzzle for me to solve, then. I am The Riddler, after all."
"I really need to get home. It's almost two now." I said, checking my watch.
"We'd all best get some sleep," Jonathan said.
"Until later," Jervis said quietly, standing up and tipping his hat.
"Nice meeting you Jervis!" I said as he disappeared into the darkness. "He seems like a nice fellow," I commented.
"So long as you aren't Alice," Edward said as he stood up, walking with me to the exit. "He's obsessed."
"Like you and riddles?' I said, poking him in the arm teasingly he rolled his eyes and glared at me.
"Yes, like me and riddles." He sighed and followed me outside of the warehouse. "Do you want a ride home? The buses don't run this late at night and it's a long walk."
"A ride? You have a car?' I asked, a little shocked.
"Yes, I have car. It's parked several blocks away."
"Thank you," I said, smiling. "I would really rather not walk. November is getting colder and colder."
