Both Hiccup and Caverna were frozen for a few seconds once they were able to take in the scene before them after the flash of light. They both noticed their father lying on the floor, his helmet on the floor and he didn't seem to be breathing, and they noticed Toothless breathing heavily, steam coming from his mouth like it normally did after he fired a plasma blast. However, they suddenly dashed over to their father, helping each other to push the bulks of ice off of his chest and the rest of his body and Caverna tried to shake him awake.
"Dad, wake up!" She shouted. "Dad!"
Valka then ran over to them and she rested her head on Stoick's chest and the siblings held their breath, before she looked at them and shook her head, her eyes filling with tears. As the news that his father was dead sank in, Hiccup curled into a ball and started to sob onto his father's chest as his mother sat next to him, a hand on his shoulder. Caverna simply sat there watching the scene before her and she noticed Toothless shy over, staying close to her as he sniffed Stoick's hand. As he tried to comfort his rider, Hiccup pushed him away.
"This is your fault, so just leave us alone!" He shouted at the dragon that shied away from everyone and ran back towards the edge, close to Drago.
Caverna stood as she watched Astrid run over as she and the others landed their dragons and she soon felt a hand on her shoulder as Gobber stood beside her then she soon felt arms around her as Fishlegs joined her and she nestled into him. Her mind was too full to notice Toothless being put under the new Alpha's control, and he done the same with Stormfly, Meatlug, Barf and Belch and Hookfang and soon all of the dragons left, leaving the rest of the teens and adults looking rather distressed.
Eventually, it was time for the chief to set sail and whilst the other teens gathered around to grieve, Caverna managed to get a boat that was seaworthy enough ready, and Gobber found some arrows and bows that had been left behind. Then along with the help of Snotlout, Gobber, Eret and Fishlegs, Caverna managed to load her father's body on the boat. Once he was on the boat, she laid his sword in his hands that she placed neatly on his chest and then she covered his body with the sheet, leaving his face free for now as everyone came and paid their respects. First it was the twins who told him what an awesome leader he was. Then it was Snotlout who said that he would always respect him and promised to look after Hiccup. After him, came Fishlegs who thanked him for keeping Caverna on the island and for allowing him to court her. Then it was Eret who simply thanks him for sparing his life when Stoick had come to his boat. Then it was Valka who apologised for not being there those past twenty years, but then thanked him for allowing her to rekindle their relationship for the short time that they had together. Then it was Astrid who thanked Stoick for welcoming her into their family after what had happened to her, and for allowing her to marry Hiccup. Next it was Gobber, and the old blacksmith struggled to keep tears from his eyes as he thanks his chief and best friend who everything that he had done for him in the past. Then it came to Hiccup, and the young man walked to his father and as he was about to break down, he managed to get a few words out.
"Thanks dad, for everything, for Caverna, for the tribe, for accepting me, just for everything."
Finally, it was Caverna's turn and she felt everyone's eyes on her as she walked to where Stoick's face was uncovered and she rested a hand on his forehead as she finally started to speak and unlike everyone else there was no sadness in her voice.
"Well, didn't think I'd have to do this for a long time dad, but to be honest I'm glad it was now and not later." She could practically feel the puzzled faces behind her. "I'm going to miss you, but I find this easier to accept, sure that Odin fucked up when he decided on me huh? I am thankful to you, dad, you've really given me a new life, and now I've got things to look forward to, thanks to you. So thank you and I hope that you hold a light for Hiccup and I when it's our time to join you in the halls of our fathers." She told him with a kiss to his now cold forehead. "See you soon." She whispered. When she was ready, she stepped off of the boat and with Eret's 'help' they pushed the boat out to sea. She walked up to stand beside her brother as he readied his arrow to fire flames onto the boat, and she watched him.
"You can do this." She whispered and she readied her own arrow, and they moved in sync as they readied their arrows, took aim and fired. Both of them hitting the boat and setting it alight, it was soon joined by a rain of other arrows, and soon the whole boat was sailing further away, burning furiously.
Afterwards, everyone sat around on the rocks, silent and sad. Hiccup was leaning back in Astrid's arms as she sat on the rock, Valka was sat with Gobber on another rock, whilst Snotlout sat by their feet, still trying to act tough. When really, the only tough one there was Caverna who was sat next to Fishlegs on the ground and Eret sat on a rock above her and the twins were sat on another rock, this time not fighting over it and looking rather morbid and quiet. However, eventually one of the twins spoke and it was Ruffnut, since she had been looking out on the dark murky water.
"Uh...Guys..."
"What is it Ruffnut?" Astrid asked as she moved a hand through Hiccup's hair.
"There's something floating in the water." She told them.
"Yeah, it's called Ice." Snotlout told her.
"No, it's black, ice isn't black." Ruffnut told them.
"Where Ruff?" Caverna asked as she walked over to the girl and when she was shown the direction, she soon saw what she was pointing at. "It's a dragon, it's floating on ice, it looks wounded..."
"But all the dragons were taken." Valka told her.
"Maybe injuries stop the Alpha from taking over." Fishlegs offered, before he looked at Caverna as he heard a clang and everyone did and they saw that Caverna had shook off her flight jacket and swords.
"Caverna, what are you doing lass?" Gobber asked her as he wandered over.
"That's Snowcap." Caverna told them. "I recognise her shape anywhere." She told him as she walked to the water's edge.
"Caverna if you go in there you'll freeze to death." Snotlout told her.
"If I don't then Snow will freeze to death." Caverna told him.
"Look, at least let someone go with you." Hiccup told her.
"I'll go with her." Eret told them, and with a nod and the removal of Eret's sword, both he and Caverna ran into the water and once they were chest deep, they dived in before swimming up towards the ice.
When they reached the ice, Eret helped Caverna onto it so that she could check the dragon and the minute the dragon opened her eyes, they were a deep almost sapphire blue and Caverna knew it was Snowcap.
"Easy girl, it's me."
"What are you doing here stupid, you could have drowned!" Snowcap told her rider, though Caverna wouldn't know that.
"Come on, lets get you back to dry land." Caverna told her as she took some rope off of her body and she used a dagger that was still attached to her leather pants so make a hole on one side of the ice and she managed to tie some rope through it before she passed it to Eret.
"Tie it around yourself." Caverna told him and he nodded, doing as she had said, before Caverna done the same on the other side of the ice and she tied the rope around her own body before she put the dagger back where she got it from. When they were both ready, she pressed a gentle kiss to Snowcap's head before she dived back into the water and she and Eret started to swim back.
Meanwhile, on land, Hiccup and everyone were watching this rescue operation, but suddenly Astrid grabbed his arm.
"Hiccup, look further out." She pointed to where she meant and they both saw a fin poking out of the water going towards them.
"Scauldron..." Hiccup whispered before he ran to the water's edge. "Caverna, Eret, swim faster!"
Caverna and Eret soon saw the fin as it moved in front of them and they stopped swimming, looking at each other and Caverna saw the fear in the young man's eyes, before she looked at Snowcap. "Snowcap, need a bit of help here."
Snowcap looked up and she saw the Scauldron fin disappearing under the water, and she scanned the water, before the ice was suddenly overturned and Snowcap was thrown into the water as the ice sank, taking Eret and Caverna under with it. As they were pulled further into the murky water, Eret tied to get out of the rope, but soon became tied tightly, whilst Caverna managed to slip out of hers with ease and she reached the surface coughing out water.
"Caverna, where's Eret?" Ruffnut shouted over as Caverna managed to get to Snowcap.
"I don't know." She shouted back, looking around. "Eret!" She soon had an idea and she took a dagger from her many hiding places and she took a deep breath before she dived back under. She completely forgot about the Scauldron as she reached Eret and she started to cut through the rope, but something suddenly threw her away from him, and she soon found herself face to face with the Scauldron. Yet, as it went to attack, something hit into it and Caverna saw Snowcap firing at the Scauldron to keep it away from her rider. At the Scauldron being distracted, Caverna swam back to Eret and she finished cutting the rope off of him and the pair swam up to the surface, coughing and taking in as large gulps of air as they could. Then they were suddenly covered in more water as Snowcap resurfaced and the trio made their way back to shore, crawling onto the land and Eret collapsed on his back just as Snowcap did and Caverna collapsed on her stomach.
"Make a fire, quickly." Hiccup told them as he helped his sister to her feet and he brought her over to the fire that Astrid had made.
When Caverna had warmed up, with the help of the fire and Fishlegs wrapping her in his arms, she watched Hiccup who had now begun pacing.
"So, what's the plan, Chief?" Gobber asked Hiccup as he watched him pace.
"I'm no Chief." Hiccup sighed.
"What do you mean Hiccup?" Valka asked.
"I'm not the chief that dad wanted me to be, and I'm not the peacekeeper that I thought I was, I don't know..." He sighed as Valka walked over.
"You came early into this world Hiccup, such a wee thing, so fragile, so frail; I feared that you wouldn't make it." She told him. "But your father, he never doubted, he always said that you would become the strongest of them all. And he was right." She told him, resting a hand on his cheek.
"I...Uh...I was always so afraid of becoming my dad, mostly because I thought that no one could be that great, or that brave..."
"But that wasn't what he wanted you to be." Caverna suddenly spoke up. "He never wanted you to be the bravest, or the greatest, he wanted you to just be you." She told him as she walked over to him. "He wanted you to be Hiccup. And you might not know what to do or how to act, but you will always learn. No one knows everything and in time, who knows, maybe you will become the Great Chief in the whole of the Archipelago, but you're still only Hiccup right now." She rested a hand on his brother's shoulder. "But you've just got to remember, a Great Chief isn't found in the deeds he does or the number of battles he wins, a Great Chief is made by the amount of people who respect him, and trust me, you are well respected Hiccup."
Hiccup looked at her and he suddenly hugged her tightly, staying silent until she hugged him back. "Thank you."
"Always." Caverna whispered to him as they hugged.
When they pulled away from each other, Hiccup looked back at the rest of the group and he seemed to have much more resolved now.
"A Chief protects his own, we're going back." Hiccup told them causing Caverna and Astrid to smile.
"Uh...With what?" Tuffnut asked.
"With dragons." Hiccup told him and he looked at Caverna. "Do you think that you can go back to Berk on Snowcap and warn everyone?"
"Hiccup, I doubt that there is any way that Snowcap could out fly the Alpha now." Fishlegs told him.
"Have a bit of faith Fishlegs." Caverna told him. "Even if she can't out fly him, we can still provide some defence for the village until you guys get back."
"Then that sounds like a good plan." Hiccup told her, and he watched her put her flight suit on and she pulled her hood over her head before she climbed onto Snowcap's back. "Make sure you're careful."
"I will be." She told him as she patted her dragon's head, but just as she was about to fly off, her wrist was grabbed and she saw that it was Fishlegs.
"Seriously take care, I don't want you hurt." He told her.
"I won't be, you be careful, too." She told him after she kissed him. "Look after Hiccup for me." She whispered, before she pulled her mask into place and she gripped the reigns. "Come on Snowcap; show them the meaning of haste." She told her dragon and all too soon, both rider and Night Fury were flying through the air, moving faster than anyone ever thought possible.
