Claire's Outfit: cgi/set?id=93140177
I bounced around the TARDIS in excitement. "I can't believe one of my best friend is getting married! Oh my god, it's seems like it was only yesterday when we used to play pretend wedding when we were five." I laughed.
"You did that too!" Amy exclaimed happily. "I used to have Rory dress up as a groom."
Rory rolled his eyes. "Yeah, and you made me dress up as the Doctor on more than one occasion when we were little."
Amy immediately shut up while I laughed at her. "Oh yeah! I remember you telling me that!"
"Drop it." Amy warned.
I backed off and waltzed over to the Doctor who had just landed the ship.
"Well we're here. Good old Salem." The Doctor wrapped an arm around my waist and guided me to the door. The four of us stepped outside only to frown at where we had landed.
"Err, Doctor, I'm pretty sure you have the wrong state. Right country, right time period, but wrong state." I said watching hundreds of people and cars race past each other in the usual New York City bustle.
The Doctor frowned. "Aw, I did it again!"
Amy and Rory looked around in awe. "Hey, Claire I know we have your friend's wedding to go to, but can we please look around New York first? I've always wanted to visit this place." Amy pleaded.
"Yeah it's fine, we have a time machine anyways." I shrugged.
"Ooh, what's that?" The Doctor tugged me along with him to a small table with many different odds and ends laid about on it.
"Looks like a load of junk to me." Amy muttered eyeing the contents on the table with disgust.
"Yeah Doctor, they're just overpriced items marketers will try to sell you." I said in a low tone of voice, hoping the owner of the table didn't hear us.
"Don't worry I'm not going to buy anything." He muttered. "Ooh!" He picked up a book with a woman with huge boobs on the front blowing on a gun. I raised an eyebrow at him in disapproval. He frowned down at the book before turning it over and reading the back. His eyebrows rose in interest before flipping to the front page of the book. His eyes widened before closing the book.
"What is it? Accidentally stumble upon a raunchy novel?" I asked jokingly.
"No, it's a mystery book. Which I'm going read." He said tucking the book under his arm.
"I thought you said you weren't going to buy anything."
"I'm not." He said walking off with the book without paying.
I gasped at his behavior and ran after him. Luckily, the street marketer didn't notice him take it.
"Are you out of your mind?" I asked falling into step with him. "You can't just steal something like that."
"Well I'm going to return it as soon as I'm done reading it." He winked, lacing his fingers through mine.
I rolled my eyes at him as the two of us strolled through the city, the Ponds following close behind us.
"New York growled at my window, but I was ready for it." The Doctor read aloud. The four of us were seated comfortably on the large rock located in Yellow Stone National Park. My head rested in the Doctor's lap as I watched the clouds and listened to the Doctor read aloud. "My stocking seams were straight, my lipstick was combat ready, and I was packing cleavage that could fell an ox at twenty feet."
"That's it." I grumbled in annoyance. I pulled away from the Doctor and fished for my headphones. I didn't like the way he was reacting to the main character. Really Claire? Jealous of a fictional character!
"What did I do now?" He asked, disappointed that I stopped using him as a pillow.
"Doctor, you're doing it again." Amy groaned.
"I'm reading!"
"Aloud. Please could you not." Amy turned a page in the newspaper she was reading.
"I was reading aloud so Claire could hear!" He protested.
"I don't think Claire likes that book very much." She mumbled.
He glared at her. "There's something different about you."
"What's the book?" Rory asked from where he lay on the picnic blanket.
"Melody Malone. She's a private detective in old New York."
"She's got ice in her heart and a kiss on her lips, and a vulnerable side she keeps well hidden." Amy mocked.
"Oh, you've read it?" He asked happily.
"You read it. Aloud and then went yowzah!"
I twitched at the memory. Oh, I wanted to slap him.
"Only you would fancy someone in a book." Rory added.
"I'm just reading it. I like the cover." He said thoughtfully. I gagged.
"Ooo, can I see the cover?" Amy asked reaching for the book.
"No, no, I'm busy." He protested.
I grabbed the book from him and slammed it shut before handing it to Amy.
"Woah, there Doctor." Amy's eyes widened at the large amount of cleavage on the woman on the front page. "Pretty sure Claire doesn't like that."
I huffed. The Doctor didn't even acknowledge that I was upset. Usually he always noticed when I was down even when I didn't even know it myself. I hate that book.
"It's your hair! Is it your hair?" The Doctor asked Amy as he continued to fail to notice me.
"Oh, shut up. It's the glasses. I wear reading glasses now, on my nose, see? There you go."
The Doctor frowned at her. "I don't like them. They make your eyes look all liney." He lifted her glasses before popping them back in place. "No, actually, sorry. They're fine. Carry on."
Amy gasped in horror.
"Okay, I'm going to go get us some more coffee. Who wants more coffee? Me too. I'll go!" Rory stated, trying to flee the scene.
"Rory, do I have noticeable lines on my eyes now?" Amy asked making Rory stop dead in his tracks.
"Yes." The Doctor blurted out earning a smack from me. "Ow!"
"No." Rory said quickly.
"You didn't look." Amy challenged.
"I noticed them earlier. Didn't notice them. I specifically remember not noticing them."
"You walk among fire pits, Centurion." Amy flirted.
"Do I have to come over there?" Rory asked in the same tone of voice.
"You can if you like."
"We have company." Rory nodded towards the Doctor and I.
"I'll get a babysitter."
The two lovebirds soon started making out with one another. I quickly looked to the side trying to avoid the scene while the Doctor stared at them in disgust.
"Oh, do you know, it is so humiliating when you do that." The Doctor grumbled.
Amy pulled away.
"Coffee?" Rory asked.
"Coffee." Amy agreed.
Rory started to walk off in the direction of the nearest Starbucks. I glanced at the Doctor who reached for Amy's reading glasses. He put the pair on making him look slightly like Waldo from the Where's Waldo comics.
"Oh, actually, that is much better. That is exciting." He ripped out the last page of the book before throwing it in the picnic basket.
"Why did you do that?" Amy asked.
"I always rip the last page out of a book. I hate endings."
I glared at him before standing up. "I'm going to go catch up with Rory."
"You okay?" Amy asked staring at me in concern.
I glanced down at the Doctor who was once again absorbed in his book. And to think he was being all romantic a few hours ago, but no, the second he gets his hands on a book with a sexy woman on the cover he forgets all about me. "I'm fine."
With that I stormed off in the direction Rory went. Hopefully a walk will cool me down.
I walked through central park searching for Rory, but there was no sign of him anywhere. I knitted my eyebrows together in thought. He couldn't have gone too far. I stopped at the fountain and sat on the ledge of it. Stray droplets of water splattered my face as I stared at my reflection in the water. Why is he ignoring me all of a sudden? He was slow dancing and sharing spaghetti with me not that long ago. Was he lying to me the whole time? A small tear slid down my cheek at the thought of loosing him. No, I'm just overreacting, as usual.
"Are you alright?" A voice asked behind me.
I quickly wiped at my tears before turning around to face a mysterious woman in a trench coat with the front open revealing a generous amount of cleavage. Bushy blonde curls poked out from under the fedora that hid most of her face.
"I'm fine." I answered quickly. My eyes racked over her. "Do I know you? You look very familiar."
"Spoilers." She said with a smirk before taking a seat next to me. "Now, tell me, what's the matter?"
I eyed her curiously. Spoilers? That's odd, why couldn't she just tell me who she was. I shrugged it off before sighing heavily.
"Well, it's just that, I've been traveling a lot with an amazing man and a few friends. Just recently he surprised me with a romantic dinner and he told me that he had feelings for me. I've been falling for him for months now and finally he told me that he feels the same way." The woman smiled. "But, today he's been completely ignoring me. I don't know why. He found a book with a provocative cover and a sexy lead female and all of a sudden it's like I don't exist. Sorry if I'm carrying on about nothing. I'm probably boring you." I apologized.
"No, no you're not boring me at all sweetie. One thing you need to know about men, is that they're pigs." She stated putting a hand on mine. I laughed lightly at her comment. "And don't worry about him. I'm sure he still loves you. He's just being an idiot like most men are. Besides he would be crazy to give up a beautiful, sweet girl like you."
I blushed at the woman's kindness. "Thank you. Well, I should probably try to find Rory." I said standing up.
"Is Rory the man who put you in this state?" She asked concerned.
"Oh no, he's a friend of mine. I told the Doctor and Amy I would join him, but I can't seem to find him."
"Here I'll walk with you." The woman fell into step with me as we searched for Rory.
I stared ahead towards a small tunnel. A skinny man carrying two coffee cups was walking towards it.
"Oh there he is!" I pointed him out, but as soon as I spotted him he vanished. "What? He was there a second ago."
The woman sighed heavily and opened her wristwatch. "I'm afraid we're going to have to go get him then." She began typing something on her watch.
I eyed her curiously. "What do you mean?"
She grabbed my hand suddenly. "Just don't let go of my hand until I give you the all clear."
"What's going on?" In the blink of an eye, the mysterious woman pressed a button on her watch and we immediately vanished.
"All clear." The woman said letting go of my hand.
I opened my eyes and stumbled back slightly. We were still in New York, but it was nighttime. The most shocking sight though was Rory standing in front of us still carrying the two coffee mugs.
"Claire? River?" He asked in confusion.
"Hello, Dad." The woman next to me greeted with a smirk. She's River?
"Where am I? How the hell did I get here?" Rory asked. "Claire, how did you get here?"
"Claire came with me. As for you I haven't the faintest idea, but you'll probably want to put your hands up."
My eyes widened in shock when I man suddenly appeared behind Rory with a gun pointed at him. Rory turned around in confusion only to drop the two coffee cups in shock as he threw his hands in the air.
"Melody Malone?"
I jumped at the new voice, which came from a big black man who suddenly appeared behind River and I.
"You're Melody?" Rory gasped in surprise.
Realization dawned on me as I stared at the woman next to me. She was the woman from the novel and she was married to the Doctor. No wonder he was making googlely eyes at her the whole time; she was a gorgeous woman. And she's probably going to steal the Doctor right out from under your nose and you wouldn't even know what hit you. I shook my head at the thought when suddenly a car pulled up.
"Get in." The man ordered.
The Doctor
"You know, I think you really upset Claire." Amy said suddenly.
I looked up from the book. "What are you talking about? She seemed fine to me. She just went to go join Rory that's all, which is a bit odd, but…" I paused as realization dawned on me.
"Yeah. You hurt her, Mr." Amy cried grabbing the book from my hands and smacking me over the head with it.
"Oi!" I put my arms up in defense before finally grabbing the book from her.
"You've been making goo-goo eyes at a fictional character instead of paying attention to Claire! You literally just confessed your feelings to her and this is how you treat her?"
I sighed heavily. "I'll go talk to her." I went to shut the book, but stopped when a line caught my eye.
"Doctor, what's wrong?" Amy asked peering over my shoulder.
"I noticed the girl with the curly brown hair by the fountain. She was very distraught after being ignored by a new love of hers. I comforted the girl and listened to her problems until we noticed the skinny man. The skinny man disappeared before we could reach him, so I took it upon myself to use my vortex manipulator to locate him." I read aloud.
"Vortex manipulator?" Amy frowned. "Doesn't River have one of those?"
"We found the skinny guy in the exact spot, except night had fallen upon us. He looked scared and confused so I gave him my best smile and my bluest eyes." I continued to read.
"Beware the yowzah. Do not, at this point, yowz. Doctor? What did the skinny guy say?"
"He said, 'I just went to get coffees for the Doctor and Amy. Hello River."
"Wait, what's River doing in a book? What's Rory doing in a book?" Amy asked in shock.
"He went to get coffee, pay attention." I held a finger up and continued to read as we made our way for the TARDIS. "Rory recognized the curly haired girl next to me, the two appeared to know each other. 'Claire? River? Where am I? How the hell did I even get here?"
"Claire's in it now too?" The red head gasped. "Ok, Rory went to get coffee and Claire met River by a fountain and then they all turned up in a book. How does that even work?"
"I don't know. We're in New York!" I cried as we entered the TARDIS.
Claire
"What is going on?" Rory asked as the three of us piled into the back seat of the car. I was awkwardly squished in between River and Rory. Since I was the smallest, it made the most sense that I would be in the middle.
"You didn't come here in the TARDIS obviously." River observed.
"Why?" Rory asked.
"You couldn't have."
"This city is full of time distortions. It'd be impossible to land the TARDIS here. Like trying to land a plane in a blizzard. Even I couldn't do it." She smiled smugly.
"But you managed to zap us here with your watch." I argued.
She showed off her watch. "Vortex manipulator, less bulky than a TARDIS. A motorbike through traffic. You?"
"I'm not sure." Rory grumbled.
I watched the streetlights zoom by as the car drove us to who knows where. Anxiety itched at me, making my heart beat faster as adrenaline coursed through my veins. My clammy hands wrung together in an attempt to fight off the nerves as I tried refraining myself from going into a full-blown anxiety attack. I didn't like it here, everything about this part of the city felt off.
The Doctor
"The weeping angels?" Amy asked as we exited the TARDIS. We had landed in the middle of a graveyard.
"It makes sense." I stated as I put out the flames in the TARDIS with a fire extinguisher.
"It makes what?"
"That's what happened to Rory. That's what the Angels do. It's their preferred form of attack. They zap you back in time; let you live to death. As for Claire, she should be fine if she traveled with River." Please let her be ok. If one hair is harmed on her head, River will never hear the end of it.
"Well, we've got a time machine. We can just go and get him."
I shook my head. Oh you humans just don't understand. "Well, tried that, if you've noticed, and we are back where we started in 2012." I gestured to our surroundings in annoyance.
"We didn't start in a graveyard. What are we doing here?"
"Don't know. Probably casually linked somehow. Doesn't matter. Extractor fans on!"
"Well, we'll get there somehow. We're in the rest of the book."
"Doing what?"
"Page 43, you're going to break something."
"I'm what?" I asked blowing smoke out of my face as I tried to clear the TARDIS.
"'Why do you have to break mine?' He frowned and said, 'Because Amy read it in a book and now I have no choice.'"
"Stop! No! No! Stop!" I cried grabbing the book from her. "You can't read ahead. You mustn't and you can't do that." Worry etched at my hearts as I feared for what I might have to break or what kind of damage had been altered for the future.
"But we've been reading it." Amy protested.
"Just the stuff that's happening now, in parallel with us. That's as far as we go."
"But it could help us find Rory and Claire."
"And you read ahead and find that Rory or Claire dies? This isn't any old future Amy; it's ours. Once we know what's coming, it's fixed. I'm going to break something, because you told me that I'm going to do it. No choice now."
"Time can be rewritten."
"Not once you've read it." I grabbed her hand and ran for the TARDIS. "Once we know what's coming, it's written in stone."
Claire
We were lead into an old house of some sort. The main room we were lead into appeared to be a lobby for an office. I watched River examine a vase out of the corner of my eye.
"Ah. Early Qin dynasty, I'd say." She smirked.
"Correct." A man from the top of the staircase appeared. "Are you an architect as well as a detective?"
River shared a knowing look with Rory as the man descended from the stairs. Something felt off about him, he was definitely giving me the creeps.
"Early Qin, just as you say. You're very well informed."
"And you're very afraid. That's an awful lot of locks for one door." River said sizing him up.
I walked over to Rory who was examining one of the vases. The once Chinese lettering suddenly changed to English, it read "Rapture of Summer"
"River, I'm translating." Rory stated in shock.
"It's a gift of the TARDIS. It hangs around." She told him.
The man suddenly pointed to Rory. "This one. Put him somewhere uncomfortable."
Rory threw his arms up in exasperation.
"With the babies, sir?" The black man asked appearing behind Rory.
The man shrugged with an eerie smile. "Yes, why not? Give him to the babies."
The black man grabbed Rory and dragged him away. The babies? By now my anxiety was at its highest, luckily I managed to refrain from giving into it.
The man suddenly crooked his finger for River and I to join him.
"Stay close to me." River whispered in my ear as we followed after him. Upon entering the room I noticed a vase that read 'yowzah' causing me to groan inwardly. "Hello Sweetie. Looks like our man will be joining us shortly." She said keeping her voice down so the creep couldn't hear. River stepped away from me and waltzed up to a curtain. "Let's see, crime boss with a collecting fetish. Whatever you don't let anyone else see has got to be your favorite. Or possibly your girlfriend." She pulled down the curtain revealing a weeping angel. I felt my blood run cold at the sight of the terrible monster that once tried to kill me. "So, girlfriend, then." She pulled out her vortex manipulator and began typing on it.
"What are you doing?" The man asked.
"Oh, you know, texting a boy."
"These things are all over, but people don't seem to notice. It never moves while you're looking." The man stated, walking closer to us. He stood slightly behind me causing me to shift slightly from discomfort.
"Oh, I know how they work." River stated.
I stepped closer to River in an attempt to get away from the creep. I made sure to keep my eyes on the angel, afraid that it would move. It seemed different than the one I encountered before. There were cracks in its flesh and it looked almost as if it were in agony.
"You realize it's screaming? The others can hear. Is that why you need all the locks?"
Suddenly the lights went out for a second before turning back on. In that short time I felt something cold grasp my right wrist. My eyes widened to the size of saucers as I stared at the angel who was holding me captive. I tried to pull my hand out but it was holding it too tight.
"You're going to tell me all about these creatures. And you're going to do it quickly." He threatened.
The lights went out again and I felt the cold stone grab my other wrist. I whimpered and kept my eyes locked on it praying I would get out of this alive.
"The angels are predators. They're deadly. What do you want with them?" River asked, watching the angel as well.
"I'm a collector. What collector could resist these? I'm only human." He laughed.
"That's exactly what they're thinking."
Suddenly all of the lights started flickering on and off as the wheezing of the TARDIS filled the room. Papers began flying about as the sound grew louder and the wind picked up.
"What is that? What's happening? Is it an earthquake?" The man asked dumbly.
"Oh, you bad boy. You could burn New York." River laughed and placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. The two of us kept our eyes fixed on the angel.
"What does that mean?"
"It means, Mister Grayle, just wait till the Doctor gets a hold of you."
Mr. Grayle suddenly plummeted to the ground with a loud thud. "What happened?" I asked.
"He fainted." River informed. "You don't have to watch the angel sweetie, it's too weak, give your eyes a rest." I blinked tentatively, but sighed in relief when I realized I was still in one piece.
"How am I going to get out of here?"
"Don't worry the Doctor will be here soon. He'll think of something."
At that moment the Doctor's voice rang through the hall. "Sorry I'm late traffic was hell." River chuckled as he checked Mr. Grayle on the floor. "Shock, he'll be fine."
"So where are we now, Doctor Song? How's prison?" He asked coming closer to the room.
"Oh, I was pardoned ages ago. And it's Professor Song to you." River rolled her eyes.
"Pardoned?"
"Mmm, turns out the person I killed never existed in the first place. Apparently, there's no record of him. It's almost as if someone's gone around deleting himself from every database in the universe. Now I suggest that you quit your dilly dallying and get in here."
The Doctor walked into the room examining the angel. His eyes traveled down to the stone hands that held me captive. Within the blink of an eye he was at my side. "How did this happen?" He asked fiercely turning to River.
"Mr. Grayle was getting a little trigger happy with the light switch." River stated with the roll of her eyes.
The Doctor turned back to me and placed a gentle hand on one of my captured wrists the other rested on the small of my back. "I'll get you out. I promise." He whispered placing a soft kiss to my forehead. He pulled away and focused his attention on my wrists. He tried to help pull it out but I gasped in pain.
"I'm sorry!" The Doctor apologized quickly. He continued to examine my wrist. "She's holding you very tight."
"At least she didn't send her back in time." River spoke up.
"I doubt she's strong enough." The Doctor answered coolly.
"Well, I'm going to need my hands back." I laughed nervously.
"So which is it going to be?" River asked. "Are you going to break the angel's wrist or Claire's?"
The Doctor gave me an apologetic look. My heart sunk to the bottom of my chest. "Oh, no. Really? Why do you have to break mine?" I whimpered.
The Doctor frowned deeply. "Because Amy read it in book, and now I have no choice." The Doctor looked to Amy who appeared in the doorway, a look of guilt was written all over her face. "You see?"
Amy nodded in regret refusing to make eye contact with him.
"What book?" River asked in confusion.
The Doctor angrily took the book out of his pocket and flashed it to her. "Your book. Which you haven't written yet, so we can't read it."
"I see. I don't like the cover much." She scoffed.
"But if River's going to write that book, she'd make it useful, yeah?" Amy asked.
"I'll certainly try. But we can't read ahead, it's too dangerous."
"I know, but there has to be something we can look at."
"What a page of handy hints, previews, spoiler free?" The Doctor suggested.
"What about chapter titles?" I offered.
The Doctor nodded his head and snapped his finger. "Brilliant." He scanned the chapter titles before looking up. "He's in the cellar."
Amy held her hand out towards the Doctor. "Gimme!"
The Doctor tossed her the sonic screwdriver before running over to me. He pressed his lips to my cheek longer than he usually did. I smiled as a blush tinted my cheeks, wishing I could give him a hug. He pulled away and made his way for the door only to stop dead in his tracks.
"Doctor?" I called out in concern. "Are you okay?
"What is it?" River asked slowly approaching him. "What's wrong? Tell me. Doctor? Doctor, what is it, tell me."
The Doctor staggered a little and grabbed on to the back of a chair to hold his balance.
"Doctor, what's it say?" I asked watching him continue to stare down at the book. He quickly took the book to his forehead in a hard smack.
"Okay, I know that face." River said.
The Doctor growled loudly before throwing the book to the ground.
"Calm down. Calm down! Talk to us, Doctor!" She said in attempt to soothe him.
He turned on her quickly, pure anger written all over his face. "No!" He stormed up to her. "Get Claire's wrists out. You make sure you get them out without breaking them!"
"How?" River and I asked in unison.
"I don't know, just do it. Change the future!" He ordered before running from the room.
I turned to River in shock. "What does he mean change the future?" I asked hesitantly.
River slowly picked up the discarded book on the ground. I watched her face as she scanned the chapter titles a look of pure shock flashed across her features before she recovered quickly.
"Ok, let's see what we can do." She stated placing a gentle hand on my right arm.
"What did the book say?" I asked nervously.
She ignored me and slowly tried working my wrist out. A sharp pang went up my arm. "Ow!" I cried.
"Sorry." She continued to try to maneuver my wrists out, but it was no use. "We're going to have to break them." She sighed in regret.
"But-" I started.
"I know what the Doctor said, but there is absolutely no other way to get them out."
I sighed heavily. "Just do it quickly."
"I'm so sorry sweetie, this is going to hurt." She warned as she prepared to break my right wrist.
I bit my lip and nodded. A loud snap rang throughout the room as a strangled cry ripped through me.
