The watch opened with a quick snap and several gold sparks flew out of it. My mom jumped slightly when one of the sparks shocked her right hand causing her to lose her grip on the watch. The fob watch plummeted to the floor, but was quickly snatched up in the hand of the Doctor.
"That's odd, it's never shocked me before." My mom stated, rubbing her hand. "It doesn't even work properly."
The Doctor studied the watch with a bewildered expression on his face. His grey-green eyes flickered between the watch and my mom several times.
"Doctor, what's wrong?" I asked, studying the expression on his face. It was like he was expecting something to happen yet nothing did. I couldn't put my finger on it.
The Doctor ignored me and ran up to my mother searching her eyes for something. "Do you remember?" He asked suddenly.
My mom stared back at him in confusion. "Remember what?"
"Do you remember anything after opening the watch? Anything at all?" He was slowly starting to grow frantic.
"What on earth are you talking about? Of all the times I've opened that watch, I just wanted to know why it never worked." My mom stated.
"You've opened this before?" The Doctor asked in shock.
"Of course. I've had it my whole life, I was bound to open it at some point." She argued.
The Doctor suddenly began rummaging through his pockets and emptying the contents out on the table. I shook my head in embarrassment at the small pile he had made consisting of a small rubber duck, a Barbie doll, some sort of metal circuit, the ultraviolet light and a glowing seashell. Finally he pulled out a stethoscope and looked to my mom. "This probably sounds weird, but I'm going to have to check your heartbeat." He stated putting the plugs in his ears.
"What?" My mom and I asked in unison. No… she can't be a… no, what am I thinking?
"It's just a precaution." The Doctor assured.
With a shrug my mom let him listen to her chest. A huge smile suddenly graced his lips after listening to both sides of her chest.
"You're good, nothing's wrong." The Doctor confirmed stuffing the stethoscope back in his pockets. "Are you sure you don't remember anything? Nothing unusual or out of ordinary?"
"No, I can assure you that I have no idea what you're talking about." My mom answered laughing it off. "Now if you'll excuse me, my husband is probably wondering where I've gone."
"Do you mind if Claire and I hold on to this?" The Doctor asked holding up the watch.
My mom eyed us carefully before nodding. "Don't lose it." She warned and with that, my mom gave me a quick hug goodbye before seeking out my father.
As soon as she was out of sight I turned to the Doctor. "What was that all about?" I asked.
The Doctor pursed his lips in thought as he glanced around the room. People were starting to pile onto the dance floor. An excited grin immediately swept over his face. "I'll tell you after the dancing."
Before I could protest he dragged out onto the dance floor just as the intro to Come on Eileen by Dexy's Midnight Runners blared out. "Doctor, we have to discuss this! What's going on?" I shouted to him over the pounding music.
"Come on Claire!" He laughed before throwing his arms in the air. He started shaking his arms and head in sync while bobbing up and down while walking towards me.
I rose an eyebrow at him, trying my best to hold in the giggles that were threatening to erupt. Not being able to keep them in anymore, I finally cracked. "You look like a drunk giraffe!" I laughed.
The Doctor paused. "I do not."
"Yes, you do."
He pouted before running up to me. He lifted me into the air and spun me around before setting me down again. Keeping his hand in mine he held me at arms length before twirling me into his chest. I quickly turned around in his arms to look up at him. The Doctor smiled down at me as he wrapped his arms around me, pulling me flush against his chest. I let my arms wrap around his neck and stood on my tiptoes so I could rest my head in the crook of his neck.
"Why are you avoiding my question?" I asked over the music.
The Doctor paused. His arms fell from my waist and he pulled away. His grey-green eyes scanned the room cautiously before he grabbed my hand. I let him drag me back outside to where he had parked the TARDIS.
"Doctor, please tell me what's going on." I pleaded as we stepped through the TARDIS doors.
The Doctor quickly ran up to the console, pressing random buttons as the TARDIS started to take flight. The TARDIS jerked abruptly sending me flying against the railing.
"Oof" I gasped as my stomach crashed into the side of the railing, knocking the wind out of me for a brief moment.
"Claire, are you okay?" The Doctor cried running to my side.
"I'm fine." I reassured him once I got my breath back.
"Right." The Doctor lead me over to the TARDIS doors. "Before I tell you what's going on, there's something I've been meaning to show you."
"Is this the surprise you've been going on about?" I smirked.
"Why yes it its." The Doctor stopped at the doors with his hands behind his back. "Ready?" he asked with a smirk.
I smirked back and nodded my head. The Doctor threw the TARDIS doors open dramatically, revealing trillions of stars decorating the night sky. A small gasp escaped my lips as I took in the sight before me. "It's beautiful." I breathed.
"Calderon Beta, the only moment in the history of the universe where trillions of stars can be seen in one sky." The Doctor informed. Taking my hand he led me closer to the door. The Doctor then took a seat on the edge of the floor letting his legs dangle over the edge. I carefully took a seat next to him letting my feet dangle along beside his.
"So now are you going to tell me what's going on?" I asked with slight impatience.
The Doctor sighed heavily and fished around in his pockets for something. He then produced my mother's fob watch. "This is a fob watch. Looks like any old watch to a human, but it's more than just a watch. Sometimes Time Lords are left with a choice…" he paused. "Sometimes things can get so dangerous for a Time Lord that they change their form through a Chameleon Circuit. The Chameleon Circuit can rewrite every particle of DNA in their body, changing them into anything they desire, the most common one tends to be human." The Doctor looked up at me slowly. I stared blankly back at him, waiting for him to continue. "They then transfer all of their Time Lord DNA and their memories into a fob watch. Just like this one." The Doctor placed the watch in my hand. "When the watch is opened they become a Time Lord again and their memories are returned to them."
The Doctor stroked my hand with his thumb as I examined the watch in my hands. "That can't mean…" I trailed off.
"You're grandmother spoke of meeting a Time Lord and her child over fifty years ago." The Doctor paused. "How old is you're mom?"
My heart thudded dangerously against my chest. "54." I gulped.
"You're mom was that baby Time Lord."
I shook my head. "No, that doesn't make any sense. You said you were over a thousand years old, yet you look like you're in your twenties. If my mom is 54 wouldn't she technically still be a child?"
"Technically speaking, yes. But, you're mom's lived most of her life as a human, so she aged like a human." The Doctor shrugged.
"But you said that Time Lords regain their memories afterwards, my mom didn't seem to remember anything."
The Doctor nodded. "It's a fault. Rarely happens, actually, it's extremely rare almost impossibly rare-"
"Rambling." I pointed out.
"Right, sorry. Your mom doesn't remember she was ever a Time Lord and she probably never will except for the fact that she has two hearts now. I don't think she can regenerate either."
"Why?"
"It's all faulty, something went wrong when her DNA tried changing back. As I said before it's extremely rare for this to even happen. It's so rare I don't even know how to fix it! I don't even know if it can be fixed." The Doctor sighed heavily.
Suddenly it all dawned on me. If my mom was a Time Lord does that mean… "Doctor, if my mom is a Time Lord, does that mean… I'm one too?" I asked slowly.
The Doctor smiled. "You're half Time Lord and half human. You're father is still human."
"But I don't have two hearts."
"No, you only have one heart." The Doctor wrapped his arm around my waist. "You might be able to regenerate, but it's not always guaranteed. Curse of the half Time Lords." The Doctor sighed pulling me closer to him.
I rested my head against his shoulder. "I can't believe this." I sighed into the tweed fabric of his coat. "I'm half Time Lord. Does this explain why my drawings come to life?"
The Doctor frowned. "No, I'm still not sure what that's about, but finding out what you are is one step closer to figuring out how to control it." He reassured me.
We fell quiet for a moment to watch the stars smiling down upon us. Swirls of purples, blues, and reds decorated the background to the many twinkling balls of gas. I counted at least forty shooting stars, more than I would've seen in a lifetime.
The Doctor's finger trailed lightly against the bare skin of my arm sending light shivers up and down my spine. I could feel myself slowly drifting into a peaceful state of slumber. The Doctor's lips pressed lightly to my forehead causing me to smile sleepily. I could've stayed cuddled against the Doctor with our feet dangling out in space forever, but I knew that if I stayed a moment later I would've fallen asleep. And with my luck, I'd probably fall overboard.
With a heavy sigh I pulled away from the Doctor. "I should go to-" I was cut off suddenly when the Doctor ran his fingers lightly under my chin, tilting it up in the process. The Doctor's eyes bore into mine before eyeing my now trembling lips. "Doctor-" I started but was cut off by the Doctor's lips crashing against mine. I felt my eyes widen and my heart sore at the new affection. His lips were slightly cold yet extremely soft with a faint taste of cherries from the many Shirley temples he had earlier.
The kiss only lasted for a second. The Doctor's cheeks and ears had a light pink dusting on them as he averted his eyes. "I'm sorry… I shouldn't have…" I cut him off however by capturing his lips in yet another sweet kiss. The Doctor flailed his arms about useless before finally resting his hands on my waist. This kiss was longer and more passionate than the one before. Our fingers tangled in each other's hair and our lips seemed to dance against each other effortlessly. After a minute or so we pulled apart from another in an attempt to catch our breaths. The two of us shared a dazed expression; eyes glassed over, hearts beating out of our chests, flushed cheeks, and adrenaline pumping through our veins. Our breathing started to slow down as we held onto each other in an attempt to keep from falling out of the TARDIS.
I'm not sure why, but a sudden burst of giggles erupted from me as I held on tightly to my doctor. The Doctor looked down at me in amusement before chuckling as well.
"Why am I laughing?" I giggled into his chest.
"You're embarrassed by my poor kissing skills." The Doctor offered.
My giggles subsided. "No, you were wonderful." I blushed before pecking his lips one last time. A long loud yawn escaped my lips as I pulled away.
"You should go to sleep." The Doctor smirked as he stroked my cheek.
I leaned into his hand nodding my head slightly. Before I could even stand up, the Doctor scooped me up bridal style. Kicking the doors shut behind him, he carried me down the hall to my bedroom. He gently laid me down on top of my bed and covered my body with a soft throw blanket.
"Comfy?" He asked with a smile.
I giggled again before grabbing him by the lapels of his shirt. He fell onto the bed next to me and wrapped his arms around me in a warm embrace. "Goodnight." He whispered into my hair, placing a soft kiss to the back of my neck before nuzzling his face into my shoulder. A smile plastered across my face as I soared into a dreamless sleep.
