Wraith paced back and forth across the command center of the Raptor. He was furious. He now understood Dragaunus's tendency for blasting hunter drones as he, himself, really wanted to blow something up.
A certain mage was the top of his list of targets, quickly followed by Siege and Chameleon - who were off to the side waiting for their Lord to return and skin Wraith. The wizard didn't get to the position he was in without having a few secrets up his sleeve. If he had to, he would gladly hang those to miscreants out to dry to save his own scales.
Wraith's thoughts returned to his latest failure to be rid of that mage. Blast it! That Phoenix was his by right of his dark ancestors who caught the beast.
"You had better have a very good reason for not presenting me with a Phoenix and the rotting corpse of that mage, Wraith," Dragaunus snarled as he stalked onto the bridge.
"That trice blasted mage has awakened the Elementals," Wraith growled.
"You told me that there weren't any Elementals on this planet," Dragaunus snapped while he took his seat.
"I said that there weren't any that were active," Wraith replied. "A magic user must align him or herself with the elements to awaken the Elementals, which that foolish little hen obviously did."
"What are these Elementals capable of?" Dragaunus asked, still very unhappy with his wizard. "Can we use them?"
"Not likely," Wraith answered. "Elementals answer to no one. They control their own element and if they're powerful enough, they can control lesser Elementals."
"Then why did they protect the mage?" Dragaunus questioned. "Harpies don't strike me as the friendly kind. Why would she protect the mage?"
"I think the harpy was trying to capture the mage," Wraith growled, still upset about the appearance of the Elemental that prevented from claiming his prize and giving others time to come to the mage's rescue. "As for the others protecting her, she's the only one on this planet who's aligned with the elemental energy. If she dies or goes away, they'll go dormant again."
"How much longer until your poison finishes her off?" Dragaunus inquired testily.
"She'll be dead by nightfall," Wraith assured his Lord. "The problem will be finding where she got off to and whether or not Wildwing and his team have the medallion."
"How will you get the Phoenix if you don't know where she crawled off to?" Dragaunus demanded. "If I don't have it, then what good does it do me?"
"The medallion will seek a wearer," Wraith explained. "If the Mighty Ducks end up with it, it will call to them until it drives them mad. Only a magic user can wear the medallion, so they will never be able to stop the pull and never be able to satisfy it. In the end, they will beg me to take it or go insane."
"Oh, I do like that," Dragaunus purred. "Let Wildwing and his team have the Phoenix for now and then we'll take it from them. Then, mask or no, those blasted ducks won't be able to stop us as we take over this world."
The two Saurians laughed manically for a good minute. Siege grumbled to himself and stomped off since it was obvious that once again, Wraith had escaped Dragaunus's wrath. Chameleon wandered over to the monitors that were kept tuned to whatever news channel they could get.
"I don't know, boss," Chameleon put in as the laughter died down. "It seems to me that Wildwing and his team are already a little cuckoo."
"What do you mean?" Dragaunus growled.
"Well, look at these outfits they're wearing," Chameleon said as he brought the image of The Mighty Ducks on the float from earlier onto the main screen. "I mean, really, these outfits are just hideous and they don't do a thing for Wildwing's eyes."
"What did you say?" Dragaunus asked in his quiet and deadly voice.
"I said the outfits were hideous," Chameleon answered nervously, not sure what had set the overlord off this time.
"NO! You incompetent moron!" Dragaunus yelled, slamming his fist down on the arm of his seat. "The last part."
"I said that they didn't match Wildwing's eyes," Chameleon replied as he cringed, afraid he was about to get pounded.
Wraith and Dragaunus stared at the image before them.
"Wildwing goes nowhere without that accursed mask. He probably sleeps with it on," Dragaunus mused as he watched the screen. "So, where is it?"
The other two said nothing as they could see their Lord thinking.
"Chameleon," Dragaunus finally said in a barely controlled rage. "I have a job for you."
"Ok, Wildwing isn't here," Mallory stated, standing in the middle of the meadow.
"I don't understand it," Tanya said in frustration. "I was sure they'd be here."
"Then where is he?" Duke asked as he finished checking the hillside above the meadow.
"I've tried calling him on his communicator, but he's not answering," Nosedive added worriedly.
"As long as his communicator isn't completely destroyed, I can, you know, track him in the Migrator," Tanya reminded them.
"Then let's get this show on the road!" Nosedive exclaimed as he took off for the battle van.
The others followed the teenager back to the Migrator and quickly climbed in. Tanya took a seat at her station and brought up the tracking program. It took her only a minute to home in on Wildwing's communicator and she frowned.
"That's odd," the tech grumbled.
"What's odd?" Mallory asked.
"Wildwing isn't even in the park," Tanya answered as she sat back and crossed her wings over her chest.
"Then where is he?" Nosedive demanded.
"Just outside the park, near the west entrance," Tanya replied.
"Then let's get going!" Nosedive yelled as he jumped into the driver's seat.
The others didn't argue with him and they quickly took their seats. Tanya stayed where she was; she did not like that she had been incorrect. She had been so sure that they had gone looking for unicorns.
Wildwing would protest if he could get enough air in his lungs to speak. Of all the ways he had traveled in his lifetime, being carried around by the seat of his pants qualified as the all-time worse. He now had a good idea of how a rag doll felt and he was praying the material of his pants held up at least until they found his team.
It didn't help that the blood was rushing to his head and he was afraid his breakfast was going to make a reappearance. His sinuses were starting to clog up because they couldn't drain properly so he had to breathe through his beak. He hoped and prayed that they would find his team soon as he was pretty sure he was about to pass out.
If being carried several feet above the ground by his backside and being swung back and forth wasn't bad enough, there was also the fact that the dragon had managed to grab several feathers when he picked Wildwing up. So, the fear of the seat of his pants being ripped out wasn't a big enough concern, he also had to worry about losing several tail feathers. It was a good thing hockey wasn't a seated sport, but the drake knew he wouldn't be sitting comfortably for the next few days.
Just as he was sure he was going to lose consciousness, he heard the most wonderful sound.
"DRAGON!"
"Are you sure Wildwing is around here?" Mallory asked the other hen.
"Well, he should be," Tanya defended, worried about their leader like everyone else. "His communicator is nearby, so he should be too."
"We've been driving around this neighborhood for the past fifteen minutes and we haven't seen hide nor feather of him," Duke pointed out as they turned down another street.
"What the heck happened to those lawns?" Mallory asked when they turned the corner.
They stared at the ruined yards in question. The destruction was from one end of the street to the other and only on one side. It almost looked someone took a rototiller in a line through the yards.
"Pull over," Tanya instructed. "Wildwing should be around here, like, somewhere."
"I don't see him," Nosedive pointed out as he pulled the battle van up to the curb.
"I know, but his communicator is giving off the strongest readings just ahead," Tanya replied.
Nosedive was too upset to argue with the tech, so he turned off the massive machine as Mallory opened the side hatch. He didn't like that they couldn't find his brother, he didn't like that Wildwing rode off on the deer on steroids and he really didn't like that his brother was alone with that blue beak. He wasn't sure when he started thinking of Ruby as a blue beak again, but Nosedive was too upset to care.
They filed out of the Migrator and started to look around for their leader. He wasn't in any of the yards and he wasn't responding to them calling his name. Tanya tried calling Wildwing on his communicator and heard the familiar beep coming from under a rhododendron bush.
"Well, that explains why we can't find him," Duke grumbled as he retrieved the item.
"Why did he take it off?" Mallory demanded.
"He didn't," Duke answered as he held the device up for all to see. "The strap broke."
"Great, so we're back to having no idea where he is," Mallory grumbled.
"Not necessarily," Tanya stated from where she was standing in the middle of someone's lawn. "Come take a look at this."
The others walked over and stared at the torn up yard.
"So?" Nosedive asked. "Some wild pigs tore someone's lawn up. Happens all the time."
"Ever known a wild boar with hooves this big?" Tanya asked, pointing down at a clear print in the mud.
"What the heck made that?" Duke questioned.
"That's a deer hoof print," Tanya stated.
"Do deer even get that big and heavy?" Mallory inquired.
"I can think of one," Tanya replied.
"You think the Forest Lord made this?" Nosedive asked.
"It makes sense," Tanya responded. "This street leads to the park and an earth Elemental probably has to be in, you know, contact with the earth."
"So all we have to do is follow the tracks and they'll lead us to Wildwing," Mallory stated, relieved that they had a real lead to follow.
"Or we could wait for him to be delivered," Duke mused, staring at something behind her.
"What areā¦" Mallory started.
"DRAGON!" Nosedive yelped as he jumped into Duke's wings.
"Seriously?" Duke nearly growled and Nosedive grinned at the older drake.
The young male was saved from being dropped on his tail feathers by Grin who picked him up and set him on his feet. As soon as his feet were on the ground, Nosedive ran towards the dragon.
"Wing!" Nosedive yelled.
The dragon gently laid Wildwing on the ground just as Nosedive reached them. When Wildwing didn't immediately move, Nosedive rolled him over onto his back. The others gathered around and stared down at their leader worriedly while the dragon backed up a few steps.
"Wing! Say something to me, bro," Nosedive called, scared by his brother's lack of movement.
"If you're ever given the opportunity to travel by dragon," Wildwing started, his eyes still closed and sounding a bit out of breath, "I suggest you pass."
I got you here, didn't I? the dragon stated, sounding a bit put out. It's not my fault you're not fire proof.
"What part of 'unharmed' did you not understand?" Wildwing growled as he finally opened his eyes and glared at the fire Elemental.
And where are you hurt? The dragon demanded. Other than your pride.
Wildwing scowled at the Elemental before slowly getting to his feet.
"Wait here," Wildwing instructed, pointing to the dragon as he staggered over to the Migrator.
And I should do this why? the fiery beast growled.
"I want you to take some things to Ruby," the goalie replied as he climbed into the van.
Like what? The dragon asked while he moved closer to the vehicle.
"Food and water," Wildwing called back as he started to open storage cabinets.
How am I to carry it? The dragon inquired. And how much water are you planning on giving her?
"Just a couple bottles," Wildwing yelled back. "I'll put it in something and you can carry it back to her."
The fire Elemental wasn't thrilled with the idea of being an errand dragon, but it was for Ruby. For her, he would do almost anything, even carry that nasty stuff. He let out a snort as he moved around so as not to melt the street surface.
While he waited, the dragon saw the two female ducks and the one eyed male talking quietly between themselves. The other two had followed Ruby's male into the vehicle. The dragon knew the drake had a name; he just didn't care what it was.
Mortals lived such short lives; it usually wasn't worth the time to learn their names. However, Ruby was different. For her, the dragon would lose some dignity and actually carry water.
None of them seemed interested in talking to the dragon, which was fine with the Elemental. He watched as the taller of the two females suddenly followed the other three drakes into the vehicle. The dragon didn't care what they did as long as they hurried up.
He could feel another transformation coming on. The harpy's magic and knowledge were being absorbed into his own. He had no intention of fighting it, but it helped if he could sleep through it. Otherwise, it could get rather uncomfortable and he didn't want to chance hurting anyone if it got to be too much.
He needed to get someplace he could rest and soon. His tail twitched with impatience as he waited and he wasn't sure how much longer he would be able to stay there. Fortunately, Ruby's male finally emerged with a strange bundle.
What is that? The fire Elemental asked.
"We didn't have any bags that wouldn't burn or melt," Wildwing explained as he held the weird thing up. "So I put the food and water in a fire resistant blanket. As long as you're quick, it should be fine. She can keep the blanket."
I'll let her know, the dragon said as the flames encompassing his head receded and he carefully took the bundle in his teeth.
As soon as the Elemental had the parcel secured, he turned and disappeared.
Mallory opened her beak, but stopped when Wildwing gave her a pointed look. The goalie shook his head and then signaled everyone into the van. Once they were all on board, Wildwing closed the door and nodded to his weapon's specialist.
"How'd you hide the homing beacon?' Mallory inquired while she took her seat.
"Tanya hid it in the lining of the blanket," Wildwing answered as he went over to another cabinet and got a spare jersey out.
"What happened to your other shirt?" Nosedive asked while his brother pulled the top over his head. "Did you give it a decent burial?"
"I gave it to Ruby," Wildwing replied.
"And I thought you liked her," Duke snorted in amusement.
"The phoenix burned all of her clothing off," Wildwing retorted irritably as he took the driver's seat. "She needed something to cover her and I couldn't very well give her my pants."
"So now we're going to follow the beacon, right?" Mallory confirmed as they pulled out onto the road.
"Only if you want to take on at least a dozen unicorns," Wildwing said. "We'll wait until she's back in the city. Then it'll be less likely that the bigger Elementals will be with her."
Mallory wasn't happy that they weren't immediately going after the mage. However, she did see the wisdom of picking their battle fields. Before she could start making tactical plans of attack, Wildwing started to tell them of his own little adventure.
