A/N: Once again, I'm really sorry by the long wait but things in my life are a bit busy right now. This is a bit of InoSai for everyone who missed it. I hope you like it and I'll wait for the feedback ;)
chemistrykim: I feel the same way about Itachi! That's why I wrote that chapter. I thought like Itachi deserved someone who would miss him so much and feel his death truly, that's why Naomi was created. And, about Gaara's wife, I really don't think a NejiTen shipper like me would do something good with that, but I leave his wife identity for your imagination. Thanks for still be following the fic ;)
Fier66: I know, I also had a lot of feelings while I was writting it. I kept hearing "My immortal" too for inspiration, and that just made me even more emotional... Yeah, I think I won't be written such a heavy story for a while, lol.
madeyemoody95: Thank you very much! I hope you like this one too.
Guest: [Sigh] No, it was all me... I'm sorry you didn't like it... I hope this one suits your taste better. And, well, on the bright side, you sounded like you had liked the other ones so, for that, thank you!
SpicyWifey: Thank you. Nice to still see you around XD
Firelord Nigga: I actually think that friendship and romantic love are too different to be compared (you know, like the question "who you love the most: your mom or your lover?), but I put that dialogue there because, even though you can't compare the feeling, the romantic love is more entrancing and that makes people - even the cool-headed Sasuke - think it's the greatest love ever.
Hokori-Hori-Chan: Thank you very much for your comments. I'm glad you liked Naomi and my C/K story, and here's another InoSai let me know what you thought about it later ;)
Hektols: Awn, I'm happy to know that, at this point, someone bothered to read and comment on the story from chapter one. Thank you very much.
Susanooo: Yes, he was. Weird how people can even talk about someone they hate so much when they're annoyed and sleepy, huh? Haha.
"Eh, so it's true you're slacking off already." Proclaimed Sakura when she walked in on her friend's house.
Ino raised an eyebrow. "It's not slacking off, it's maternity leave. Tea?"
"Yes, thank you. Was it necessary? Inojin could stay with your mom during your missions, couldn't he?" She followed Ino to the kitchen to help with the tea.
"No way, he's at a very difficult age. I could never bother my mother that much."
Sakura chuckled. "I've already babysitted him, Ino, he's nothing but a sweetheart baby. Why can you just admit you're feeling a bit lazy?"
Ino smiled and rolled her eyes. "Maybe. But I do love stay home with him. I want to enjoy his childhood while I can."
"Ehh…"
"Don't 'ehh' me. What?"
Sakura looked at her with a pesky look that Ino knew very well. "Nothing, it's just that… You know… One of the top reasons why men cheat is because their wives are too focused on being a mother that forget to be a wife."
Ino laughed sarcastically. "Yeah, aren't you worried about that too, Mrs. Eight Months Pregnant?"
Sakura made an unconcerned gesture. "Even though Sasuke has a lot of fangirls they all chicken out once they talk to him." She blinked one eye. "It's the best part of having taken me so many years to make him fall for me: I know there's no one else who would go the same!"
Ino raised one eyebrow. "Are you sure that is something you should be proud of?"
"Shuddup!" Taking two cups angrily out of the closet. Ino just laughed and fished the tea.
After that, spent a nice morning together, chit-chatting about home decor, babies and a great new baby proof window locker that Ino had found, because Inojin had already figure the old one out. Before the lunch, Sasuke came to pick Sakura up because "we have an appointment with our doctor", he had said.
Then Ino just cooked herself something and fed Inojin, she tried to lose herself in taking care of her son but Sakura's words wouldn't get out of her mind.
It wasn't like she felt like she was neglecting Sai in anyway. As far as Ino was concerned, their relationship was great, even if the only alone time they had was when they were sleeping - and that did not mean a long time, because Inojin used to wake up once in every three hours. But that was fun for both of them: Sai was as engrossed on parenthood as she was.
"We're fine." Ino said to herself. "That was just Sakura teasing me as always. There's no way Sai would cheat on me. What a bunch of nonsense."
But, well... It was truth that he worked for ANBU, that had a fame of having a bunch of cute, single women. And yes, Sai was the kind of man who just keeps getting more handsome with age. And yes, Ino couldn't actually remember the last time they went out for something other than groceries. But that didn't actually mean their life was dull.
"Oh, who am I kidding? Even I ain't buying that!" She confessed with a big sigh.
But there was no way Ino Yamanaka would just surrender like that.
Ino ran to her closet, dressed up in a nice dress, put her make up on then grabbed a sleepy Inojin from his cradle and went out to pay her husband a visit. On her way to ANBU headquarter, she stopped by her mother's and left the baby with her.
Ino stood on the hall for a while when she got to the HQ: she realized she hadn't had a clue of where Sai's office was. A tall masked guy approached her. "Hello, madam, can I help you?"
Ino cringed a little bit. Madam? "Well, hi. Huh... I..."
"Oh, aren't you Sai-sama's wife?" Greeted another masked person - now a woman - who seemed to come out of nowhere.
"Yeah... Yes, I am. I'm here to see him." Ino said with a smile she prayed to it to be confident.
"Oh, you should have used the private door instead of the guest door, it would be way more closer to commander's office." The girl said. "But then again, you've never been at his office, right? Ino-sama couldn't know."
Ino frowned. Why did that girl sound like she had been on Sai's office a lot?
"I will guide you there, Ino-sama. Keito, you can go back to your post." She said. The tall man bowed then fleeted. The ANBU girl took off her mask and smiled. "Let's go, Ino-sama?"
And yeah, sure, she had to be totally cute and young and hot. "So... Are you my husband's assistant or something?" Ino asked as they walked through the empty corridors.
"Oh, no, no. Sai-sama doesn't have assistants or secretaries." She answered with a condescending tone that Ino just hated. "He says he doesn't feel busy enough to need assistants."
"Uh-hu."
"I'm Harumi, by the way. Written with 'spring' and 'beauty'." She said.
"I'm Ino."
"I know. Sai-sama talks a lot about you. Actually, I even helped him choose your last anniversary present." Harumi smiled again.
"Wha...?"
"We're here!" She said. They stopped at a dark door with sign written: "Don't knock, just come in!" and a smiley. Harumi knocked anyway.
"Harumi, I told you a thousand times already: you don't need to knock!" Said Sai's voice behind the door.
Harumi laughed delighted and opened the door. "Sai-sama, Ino-sama is here to see you."
Ino got in his office, with her arms crossed. "Hey."
Sai got up with a big smile on his face. "Ino, hi! What a nice surprise! You could have warned me you're coming."
"Why?" Ino asked.
"Huh?"
"Haruki…"
"Harumi." Both Sai and the girl corrected.
"Whatever, thanks for taking me here. Now, leave."
"Oh, huh, right. I'm sorry." Harumi bowed to Sai and left with an eyebrow lifted.
"That wasn't very nice." Sai pointed out.
"Oh, no. I'm sorry." Ino answered sarcastically. That made Sai frown.
"Are you angry?" He asked taking a large step towards her.
"Yeah, I'm angry! Do have any idea why I'm angry?" She wondered incisively with narrowed eyes.
"I don't know. I couldn't think that is because something I did, because you were already mad when you got in and you weren't angry when I left home in the morning. So… did Inojin did something?"
That did it. Ino lost the little control she had left. "RIGHT! PUT THE BLAME ON OUR BEAUTIFUL BABY WHO DID NOTHING WRONG AND NOT ON YOUR FLOOZY EMPLOYEE, HARUHI!"
"Harumi." Sai corrected again.
"I DON'T CARE!" She yelled raising her hands abruptly. "What kind of married boss call a female subordinates by the first name without a suffix?! And she helped you pick my presents? And comes to your office 'a thousand times' and she's not even your secretary?! What exactly is relationship with her?"
"My relationship with…Well, she is a very kind girls who doesn't deserve to be called 'floozy' just because she's helpful and I'm her commander." Sao explained with a very confused expression. That made Ino even angrier: he looked clueless like her anger was completely inexplicable, as a fit of madness.
"Well, I have news for you, mister commander: that Harumi girl is totally into you!"
"She's not! Is she?" Sai blushed a little.
Ino laughed darkly. "I'm out of here. Don't bother to look for me or Inojin. Go and enjoy your beautiful and springlike Harumi!"
She rushed to the door and closed it strongly after she got out. Sai did not come after her.
"You know, it's not like I dislike having you here, it's just… Why are you here?" Temari asked.
Ino smiled and drank her second cup of sake. "I'm just visiting my dearest friends."
Two hours ago, Ino had knocked on Temari and Shikamaru's door with Inojin on one arm and a suitcase on the other. Now she was sitting with a weird face on their living room, Inojin and Shikadai were playing on the playpen nearby. Temari was pouring her some sake just because she was sort of having fun watching Ino act like that.
"With a suitcase?" Temari asked suspiciously.
"It's a sleep-over."
"And should you really be drinking sake when you're breastfeeding?" Temari asked again.
"I have stocked a few bottles of milk before this. I'm not that crazy." Ino answered still with that frozen smile.
"Okay, you're creeping me out. Where is Sai?"
"Temari." Shikamaru finally spoke. He was standing next the playpen watching Inojin and his son laugh at and tap each others face. "Cut it out."
Temari sighed. "Okay. I won't ask anything. Stay for how long you want! You can even move in with us!" She got up taking the sake bottle with her.
"Temari, can I ask you something?" Ino called out almost whispering.
"Go ahead."
"I know you're his friend rather than mine, but… If Sai were to cheat on me, would you tell me?"
"Probably not." She sighed again. Emotional stuff weren't her thing at all. "You can sleep on our guest room and Inojin can use Shikadai's, he can sleep with Shikamaru and I."
Ino nodded. "Thank you very much."
Temari shrugged and kept walking to the kitchen. A few steps later she stopped and turned back to Ino. "Now let me ask you something: if Sai were the kind of guy who cheat on his wife, do you think I would be his friend?"
"And are you his friend?"
Temari smiled a bit. "Best friend."
Later, when everyone was asleep, Ino woke up with the very familiar noise of her son crying. She got quickly but had a hard time finding the way to the bedroom on the unusual house. Before she found it, Inojin stopped crying. Instead of feeling relieved, Ino freaked out: the only time Inojin had stopped crying on his own was when a sheet strip got tightly tangled around his neck. She ran to the door and burst it open. Inojin was safe and happy focused on an ink bird flying around his head while Sai, humming Inojin's favorite song, changed his diaper.
Ino let herself fall on the floor. "You know, that's home invasion." She said.
Sai laughed weakly. "Sorry. It's just that I can't sleep without you two around."
Ino got up and closed the door. "Temari told you?" She asked handing him the baby powder.
"Thank you. Yeah, but she had no choice. I asked everyone we know."
"Huh."
They kept quiet until Sai finished with Inojin and put him back on the cradle. The couple stared at their sleeping baby.
"Look, Ino…"
"Don't, Sai."
"I just want to tell you something."
Ino felt a iron claw crush her heart. "Tell me something…?"
"Yes. I'm sorry." He said.
Oh, no. Ino cringed. She was absolutely sure Sai would confess he was seeing Harumi or any other pretty girl.
"Sai, don't you think it's cowardice to tell me that on our friend's house at the middle of the night?" She asked looking at him straightly.
"See, I'm doing it again! I'm sorry! I…" He panicked.
He was with that confused expression again but now Ino didn't get mad. She was wrong that time, he wasn't confused that time, he was desperate. Instinct took over her and she ran to him and took his face on her hands to comfort him.
"What…? Why are you apologizing?" She asked.
Sai grabbed her hands. "I don't know what I should do to stop you from making that expression! Why am I making you so sad?"
"Sad? I'm not sad, I'm just a bit jealous, that's all." Ino denied making an effort to smile.
"That's not true. When you're just jealous you do this" Sai lightly hit her belly with the back of his hand "and clench your jaw. And it doesn't last long, you know how much I love you. Right now I'm… truly hurting you and I just can't stand that."
Ino felt her eyes get watery. Oh, man. He knew her better than herself. Even she couldn't explain before why she acted that way. Normally, Ino would stood up for the challenge of having a cute young woman around her husband but for some reason that whole thing had left her with frazzled nerves.
"I… I guess I'm just worried." She confessed drying her tears. Ino dropped her gaze to her feet. "I'm not getting any younger and I'm a mother now so it's not like I'm a fun and easy person to be with, and you are… you. So it would be expected if you ended up… you know… leaving me. You deserve more than I'm giving to you."
It was Sai turn to grab her face. He forced her face up and looked deeply on her light eyes. "Ino, listen well what I'm going to say: the only person capable of moving my heart is you: you're the one who gave me your heart and life and a son. There's no way I would wish for more. You chose this plain, dull, tactless man to be your husband… And I would say you could do better but that's not true, I swore to your father's grave I would do everything in my power to be the best man for you. I intend to keep my promise."
Ino smiled truly for the first time since ages, or so it seamed.
"I'm so taken by my love for you now I'm surprise I didn't faint." She said honestly.
Sai smiled as well and pulled her for a long kiss. The marks left on her heart by the iron claw left completely and it was soon replaced by a feel of warmth she knew even since he first kissed her.
"And, about Harumi… I will ask Naruto to transfer her. She would be a very good guard to him!" Sai said after. Ino chuckled.
"There's no need. You just need to, you know, draw the line. Let her know her limits."
Sai nodded firmly. "Got it. I will work on that."
"Thank you."
"Now, would you please come home?"
Ino smile and bit her lower lip. "I want to, but I don't want to worry Temari and Shikamaru by leaving in the middle of the night without a warn."
Sai frowned. "But they probably heard everything by the baby monitor…" He pointed the small device on the table near the cradle.
"Yeah, we did." Answered Shikamaru behind their back. "It's not like I was willing to do it, but Temari wouldn't let me interrupt you guys nor turn it off."
Ino turned to her old friend feeling her cheeks burn. "Oh, hey. I… huh… Inojin and I going home. Thank you for the hospitality."
Shikamaru just yawned and raised a thumb to them then went back to his bedroom.
Ino turned to Sai again. "You know… When we get home, we're going to have a nice chat about what is the so called private."
On the next day, Ino and Inojin went to visit Sai again and bring him lunch. Knowing the way this time, Ino didn't stop on the hall and went straight to the door which she opened without knocking. Harumi was there looking very confused as she talked something about new katanas they had received. For her surprise, though, she was standing behind a thick black line drawn on the floor three or four feet away from Sai's desk.
Ino almost couldn't hold back her laugh.
