Dry Your Tears Chapter 29
Shadow's p.o.v
I hate it here. Damn hospitals. The cold, tiled floor, the pathetic crying people in waiting rooms, crooked doctors, bitchy women at the front desk. Sighing, i rubbed the pain out of my temples. I watched on impatiently as pinky here paced back and forth. She wasn't helping the situation at all. I rolled my eyes and stood up, finally deciding to interfere. Amy looked up with misty eyes as I blocked her path. I looked back with not so much emotion. "You need to sit down. Now."
Amy held her hands over her chest and stared at the ground. I strained my ears as she spoke in a hushed voice, lip trembling. "I know...I know I...I shouldn't be worried but-"
"But nothing", I growled, "we could have left him there to die. All he's done to you and you were in such a rush to get an ambulance for the asshole. You idiot!" I sat back down and looked up at her as she looked back indignantly.
"If there's a life to be saved you can't just walk out on it! That would be another death on my hands. I can't have that..."
Pissed off, I stood up to her and looked down. She looked back with a hint of anger in her eyes. We began to argue in hushed, but aggressive voices; ignoring those who began to look on.
"Why do you have to be such a baby?! He deserved to die and you know it-"
"No one deserves to die!", Amy hissed. I smirked sarcastically.
"Says the girl who wanted to take herself out in the first place. I bet you feel sorry for that prick, don't you?!"
"He...no. I don't. He's put me through a lot, but I wasn't going to have a death on my watch. Had he already been dead when we found him, that would be a different story, but-"
"But you just hadddd to check and see if he had a pulse", I finished. She sat down with her arms crossed and turned away from me. "What do you know anyway...you're just some loner who apparently knows where I am half the time." I frowned and bit back a remark to her strong comment. I stood in front of her, arms crossed. My anger got the best of me as I kneeled in front of her face. She looked at me, slightly worried.
"You know what your problem is? You don't know when to quit. You don't know when it's time to shut the hell up and move the fuck on. You don't know how to suck up your emotions for even one minute. You're a damn cry baby. You blame your troubles on any and everything. You. Are. Pathetic. This man has beaten you, abused you mentally, even raped you. He tried to lie at the funeral, he puts on a front to make it seem like you two have a close relationship, he treats you like the trash that you keep believing you are. And it sickens me. The fact that you wanted to save his life...sickens me. You sicken me."
I kneeled back up as tears began to fall from her eyes. They rolled down her cheeks, darkening her fur in a few streaks. I sat back next to her, and remained quiet for the rest of the time. I stared up at the clock. 3 a.m. We'd been here for hours, and I couldn't take much more of it. A part of me hoped he died, but the other half hoped he lived. Perhaps for her sake.
Amy's p.o.v
"...The fact that you wanted to save his life...sickens me. You sicken me."
I turned away as Shadow sat back down. I wiped my tears. It was time to stop crying. He was right about that at least. Sighing, I laid back in the uncomfortable waiting room chair. It was freezing and a heavy silence hung around the room. Others that were in the room went back to their cellphones and magazines after seeing our small argument was over.
My ears perked as the hospital doors slid open, then dropped as I saw who walked in. I stood, attempting to walk away, but she cut me off.
"So first you come ransacking through my home and now you put your own foster father in the hospital?! I thought you were better than that you terrible little girl! He had nothing but love for you at the funeral, but you run away! How ungrateful!"
My ears lay flat as I balled up my fist. "He isn't my foster father, Aunt Jackie. He isn't anything related to a father figure to me."
SLAP!
I stumbled backwards, holding my now red cheek. Aunt Jackie clutched her purse and looked me up and down. She wasn't the same. She was never the same after her sister died. But somehow, i forgave her without even needing to be asked to. Shadow stood behind me and crossed over. I grabbed his wrist, a silent gesture for him not to do anything rash, but he snatched away. Aunt Jackie stepped back a few paces.
"And WHO are you?!" She leaned over him and glared at me. "Ah...I get it. So you've turned into a whore now. You probably went selling your body on the street and this mongrel hurt Xander for trying to bring you back home to safety."
"Shut the hell up", Shadow growled. "Who do you think you are strolling in here like you own the place. Xander fell on his own blade. A blade he was planning on using to hurt Amy for running away from that pathetic ass funeral. Get the hell out of here. You know more than what you're trying to put on. I can see right through you."
Aunt Jackie swung her hand for a slap. I shut my eyes quickly, but opened them when I didn't hear a collision. Her wrist was in Shadow's hand.. He thrusted her to the ground on her knees. "Don't you dare...try to touch me, or Amy again. You knew what was going on didn't you?! Huh, bitch? You KNEW she was getting abused, didn't you?!" Shadow's grip tightened around her wrist.
I looked down. It wasn't true...it couldn't be. Aunt Jackie wouldn't send me to anyone who would...do that to me...
"ADMIT THAT YOU KNEW!"
A security guard, a porcupine, came into the small room. "Is there a problem here?!" He held one hand on his belt that held pepper spray.
I looked up, startled. Aunt Jackie ripped herself from Shadow's grip and stood, rubbing her wrist. "I knew nothing of the sort. Xander better live, or I'll make sure you suffer." Aunt Jackie picked up her clutch purse and walked back to the doors. The security guard tried to speak to her, but she held up one gloved hand and walked away. I looked down at the floor. I could see Shadow's reflection in it as he stood over me. I decided not to look up.
No p.o.v
Shadow stood over Amy for a moment until he held out his hand for her to take. Reluctantly, she did and stood up straight. They both looked simultaneously at the office door as it swung open. Amy's eyes widened again as she recognized the same old man from before. Shadow also looked at him in a peculiar fashion. He waved his clip board with a smile.
"He's doing just fine. You got him in just in time actually. You can go visit him if you'd like."
Amy looked back at Shadow. He shook his head, signaling that he wasn't coming back there. "You go", he muttered. "And if anything happens-"
"I'll call you in, yes I know." Amy gave a half smile and followed the old man out into the hall. He looked at Amy and smiled. "You've ran into the right people dear. You're right where you're supposed to be." He stopped in front of a room and held his hand out to gesture Amy to go inside. Amy's hand rested on the handle, shaking.
"Thank you, but how do you know I'm where I belong...?"
Amy wasn't surprised to see that the man was gone once she looked back up. She sighed and began to open the door. It creaked loudly as it opened widely. Amy lingered in the hall before stepping inside. Xander was sitting up, hands overlapping as he looked out of the window. He didn't need to turn around to know that it was Amy who had walked in.
"Sit down, Amy. We need to talk."
Amy's heart skipped a beat. She closed the door and came closer to Xander's bed. He motioned for her to sit down, still not looking at her. The moon was high in the sky and it appeared that he was staring at it. He finally turned and looked at Amy intensely.
"We just...need to talk."
