Dry Your Tears Chapter 33

Amy walked the city streets with her gloved hands shoved in her pockets. Reefs, candles, and fluorescent lights were strung about store fronts and building tops. Christmas was on its way. Amy reminisced one of her last Christmas's with her parents. It was her favorite holiday. She desperately hoped that this year would be different; that she could actually take the time to celebrate.

"With Cream, and Shadow, and Xander...maybe that crazy reporter and her friend."

Bells rang as various mobians stood on corners asking for donations to charities. Amy smiled softly. Every year her parents would save up a few funds to distribute evenly to those in need. Amy trekked onward to the hospital. This time of year was always so beautiful to her. Her boots crunched on the salted sidewalks as she skirted people busy decorating the town. She passed by a large glass window to a bakery and stopped in her footsteps. Inside, she saw a little hedgehog girl with her face pressed up against the glass. She was tapping the window trying to get Amy's attention. She jumped up and down and waved to Amy with a smile on her face.

Amy looked down and kneeled toward the window. She recognized her. She was the young girl who had got lost not too long ago. Amy had tried to help her, but her mother accused her of trying to harm her. Speaking of which, the mother came behind the girl and looked out at Amy. They exchanged a glance; both silently remembering what happened that day. Amy stepped back and began walking away. She didn't want any trouble.

The bell above the door rung as the mother stepped outside in a hurry. Amy turned and sighed. "I wasn't trying to do anything to your child ma'am. I'm just on my way-"

"No", the mother said. "I-I came to apologize. I was wrong for what I did that day. I...well. Do come inside dear, it's freezing."

Reluctantly, Amy followed her inside of the bakery. She could see her better in the light. She was tall, lean, and beautiful with curly, blonde quills. She pulled up a stool for Amy to take a seat in. The little girl rushed over and giggled as she sat next to her. Her mother sat across from Amy and folded her hands.

"My behavior was unacceptable and most definitely repulsing. You see...my ex husband almost tried hurting...even raping.. my little girl. It was a sick way to get back at me after I filed for a divorce. After that, i've never truly trusted anyone with my child..." She stroked the child's head and mumbled to herself, "My precious baby."

Amy shifted uncomfortably in her chair. She really just wanted to go and see Cream. Even still, she felt sorry for the mother. She was simply afraid of anyone hurting her daughter. She could understand that at least. A mother's love for her child surpasses a lot of things. The mother cleared her throat. "Nevertheless, welcome to my bakery. My name is Avalia. It's a bit tough to remember, so call me Ava if you please. Introduce yourself, sweetheart."

Amy looked at the little girl as she jumped in her seat with joy. "My name is Lillian, and my mommy calls me Lily. In two days, I turn 6!"

Avalia grinned and ran a hand through her quills. "When Lily saw you out the window I just had to get your attention."

Lily smiled, showcasing her small, gapped teeth. Amy smiled and introduced herself to the two of them. "...and I accept your apology. It was fine, really. I'm actually on my way to visit a friend in the hospital."

Avalia gasped. "Oh my. I do hope she's alright. Does she like sweets?"

Amy nodded slowly.

Avalia stood and rushed behind her counter. She soon returned with a neatly folded bag. "Fresh strawberry shortcake. I hope she enjoys. There's one in there for you as well, and when your friend is released from the hospital I want you to bring her right over. You're welcome here any time. It's the least I can do."

Amy stood and made her way to the door. "That's very nice, thank you. I'll be on my way now. Have a nice night-"

"Oh, Amy", Avalia interrupted, "I'd love to meet your parents some day too."

Amy's palm froze on the door handle. Her eyes began to mist, but she held back the tears. "Well...they're not always around. Sorry..."

Avalia looked at Amy with a tilted head. "Well...if they're ever in town, bring them over as well!"

"Will do", Amy said painfully as she walked out of the bakery. She wasn't sure why she didn't tell Avalia the truth. Perhaps she wanted to hide from it herself. She gripped the dessert bag in her hands and walked on until she came to a bus stop. When the bus pulled up, Amy half expected it to be the old man she was seeing around. However, it was a grumpy bear waiting impatiently for her to pay. Amy slid a few coins in his clawed paws and took a seat in the back of the bus. She sighed and leaned her head on the window as she placed the dessert next to her.

She thought of Avalia and Lily. They seemed to be really close. Her apology had also seemed sincere. She was an entirely different person than feom their first encounter. She was so warm and welcoming. That was something she was definitely not accustomed to; being treated with such respect and hospitality. Amy shifted and rested her shoulder on the window then placed her chin on her palm. Lily would be 6 years old in two days. "The same age I was when-"

Amy's thought train crashed as the bus driver made a hard break. Amy huffed and got off of the bus. After a few more minutes of walking, she walked up the driveway to the emergency room entrance, and made her way around to the front doors. As the doors slid open, the desk lady waved to Amy. Amy waved back and rushed to the elevator. She had so much to tell Cream. She longed to sit next to her best friend and talk for what always seemed like hours.

The doors opened with a 'ding' and Amy stepped out onto the tiled floor. Instantly, she was nearly knocked over by a series of doctors and nurses running down the hall in a frantic manner. Amy steadied herself, and moved her hair back in place. She walked down the same hall and turned to the next hallway that Cream's room was in. She froze as she realized that the doctors and nurses were rushing into Cream's room.

Amy ran behind them and slid to a halt at Cream's doorway. Her chest began to pound in fear as Cream lay in her bed, shaking violently. A nurse leaned over her and tried her best to stabilize her. She was yelling as the other doctors and nurses crowded around to try and fix the problem.

"STAY WITH ME BABY GIRL...COME ON."

A doctor pulled out a defibrillator and rubbed it together. "CLEAR!" Cream's body jolted up as the electricity flowed through her body in an attempt to restart her heart. The doctor rubbed it again and placed it on Cream. "CLEAR!" The dessert bag slipped out of Amy's hand and fell to the floor. She took several steps back. A nurse spotted her out the side of her eye and came up to her. "You can't be here right now miss-"

"Is she okay?!" Amy asked frantically. "My best friend, is she okay?!"

The nurse looked back at Cream and tried reaching out to Amy. "You really can't be here-"

Amy jerked away from the nurse's grip. "DON'T TOUCH ME! WHAT'S WRONG WITH HER?!" Two more nurses heard the commotion and came to assist. Amy tried pushing through all of them and reaching out to Cream, but they held her back the best they could. "CREAM!"

"CLEAR!"

Tears began to stream down Amy's cheeks as she watched. She screamed at the top of her lungs as Cream's body grew more and more limp. Amy went into a hysterical break down as the nurses gently pinned her against the wall. Amy slid to the ground, slightly having trouble breathing. Everything was silent now. The nurse speaking, the doctor yelling instructions,...She could no longer hear any of it. All Amy saw was the mouthing of words she could no longer comprehend. The only thing she could hear was Cream's life monitor.

BEEP...

Amy's heart beat pulsed through her ears. She held her head in pain as one of the nurses tried bringing her to her feet. She fought against them, determined to remain by Cream's side.

BEEP...

Amy managed to break through their barricade and rushed into Cream's room. A doctor yelled for someone to get Amy out of there. Amy screamed as they dragged her out.

BEEP...

"SHE'S ALL I'VE GOT, LET ME HELP! DON'T LET HER LEAVE ME DAMMIT!"

BEEP...

Amy struggled, but to no avail the nurses were managing to get her halfway down the hall. The further she was pulled from Cream, the more she screamed in pain. Her heart felt as if it were being torn straight from her body.

BEEP...

A nurse tried to reassure Amy, but couldn't be heard over Amy's screams. She had enough of the pain, and all things going wrong in her life. Amy broke down more as they attempted to shove her in the elevator.

BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPP...

"CREAM!"

Amy kicked a nurse away and stumbled to Cream's room. Her life monitor had a flat line going across it, ever so often it would spike. The doctor yelled for the nurses to get her to the ICU. Amy fell back as they wheeled Cream down the hall. Amy chased the gurney and reached out to Cream's hand. It was cold.

Amy tripped and fell to the hard floor. She sat up and held her gloved hand over her face as blood poured from her nose. Amy ignored her now stained glove and began to cry hot tears. The harder she cried, the harder it became to breathe. She choked on her tears as she laid on the ground shaking.

"GOD...GOD...GOD! PLEASE...OH MY GODDDD!"

Amy's screams could be heard several halls down. Visitors and a few capable patients leaned out their doors to see what was going on. The world went black for Amy.
