"..."
Opal didn't say anything for a long moment, simply staring in the mirror. She kept staring at the Jolteon ears coming out of the top of her head, just behind the crest of her bangs. She reached one hand up, feeling it, then pulling it slightly. Attached. Actually, that small tug hurt a bit.
"Er... Cosplay?" she said, though she hardly believed the story herself. Blaine looked at her seriously through his sunglasses.
"What are you, exactly? Human, or pokémon?"
"Neither." Opal muttered. "At least, I don't think so. I'm having trouble remembering it, it's foggy. I just... can you help me contact my brother? I think I need to talk to him."

Green stared at the scene in front of him, taking a hesitant step back.
Blue lay crumpled against a tree. He saw a flash of light brown leap towards her, standing protectively in front of her, with an open book in her hands.. Kristoff was off to the side with his hand to his chest, claw marks across his chest. Shadows were surrounding him like a black fire, flickering here and there. Blood dripped down onto the dirt, and he looked up with the darkest look Green ever did see. Yellow inhaled sharply from his side, taking a step back, crunching twigs under her shoes. He was having trouble telling if it was because of Onyx or Kristoff. Knowing Yellow, it was probably the latter.
Onyx stood, growling, though two things stuck out oddly. First was the orange, flareon-like ears and tail he now sported, the tail coming out from over the pants he wore, the ears behind the crest of his bangs. Around him was a raging fire, as if he himself was on fire, but seemed unaffected.
"Okay." he thought on auto-drive. "Maybe it's a costume. Maybe Onyx is playing a joke?"
The tail moved, shaking slightly. The ears twitched. He swallowed.
"There are three species in this world."
Onyx words echoed in his head.
"Humans, pokémon, and one more. Let me ask you, do you know what the third species is?"
But it isn't possible...!
"So you think along the lines of black and white. You don't think there could be a gray, Green?"
Everything he knew about genetics, about biology, about what was normal...
"Are you sure on that one, Green?"
The last time, he was sure. He had everything behind him, every connection to famous scientists, every book stating that it was impossible. But here was proof. Onyx was standing in the corner with orange Flareon ears and a huge, bushy Flareon tail coming out from above his pants.
The light-brown haired girl, standing next to him, suddenly winced, then bolted into the woods.
"Turquoise!" Blue suddenly called out, whipping in the direction the other girl had went. She looked ready to go after the girl when Kristoff seemed to gain his bearing and attacked again, a snake of darkness shooting out and snatching Turquoise's wrist.
"I see, now! You're a natural born! A confused, sad, mistaken natural born!" he cried out as the girl glared at him.
"Stop it!" Blue shouted from the side, now laying on her stomach, trying to get back up. Green was still to shellshocked to move. "You've already got Jade, leave her alone!"
"We've gotta do something, Green!" Yellow exclaimed from behind him. He glanced over his shoulder, eyes wide. "Blue is in no condition to fight, Onyx looks ready to go on a rampage, and it seems like the only other person who has half an idea about what's going on is about to be captured!"
Green glanced between the flaming Onyx, the darkness encircling Turquoise, and finally, Blue, struggling to stand up.
"If not for Onyx, you'll help Blue, won't you?" Yellow exclaimed.
"Don't take me for some sort of heartless monster, you know me better than that." Green shot back. "I have no idea how to proceed in the situation without getting myself killed."
"If we don't intervene, we'll all be killed!"
Green blinked. The pendant was heating up again. Why was that, he wondered? What does it mean? He paused a moment, then glared at Kristoff.
"Protect Onyx, Yellow. Try to heal him." he muttered to her. "I'll deal with Kristoff and save Blue." She looked at him, a mix of skepticism and absolute insanity in her eyes before she nodded, edging her way towards Onyx while trying not to alert Kristoff.
That's when something happened to Green that he felt was strange.
His knees bent as if getting ready to attack, and one arm raised, fingers outstretched as the other one stayed at his side. Strange letters in gold circled around him, and suddenly, a circle with more of the strange lettering appeared. He squinted, realizing they looked almost like the pokémon Unknown, without the eyes. Something flew past his fingertips, exiting his body. He watched in amazement as slices of darkened wind, almost like the move night slash, left his fingers and cut through Kristoff's arm.
His hand fell to the ground, his magic cut off, releasing Turquoise. Turquoise darted into the woods, away from the imposing danger as Kristoff grabbed his now handless arm. Green thought he was a mindless robot, but it seems that he did have half a brain. He knew he couldn't take on Yellow, himself, and... whatever Onyx was all at once.
"I'll come back for you all." Kristoff muttered as the shadows shifted around him, enveloping him. He never broke eye contact with Green. "And when I do, it'll be your head that rolls first, magician."
Then the shadows surrounded him, and he sank into the ground. Onyx, who seemed to have calmed down at that point, let out a low chuckle, catching Green's attention. He was now sitting on the ground, seemingly tired. Yellow had her hands held up, glowing a golden yellow as Blue's wounds seem to heal, slowly but surely. Green took one look at him, his smug smirk, his twitching ears and wagging tail, and rushed at him.
Yellow let out a startled yelp as she stumbled back from her kneeling position, Greens hand clamping around Onyx's throat.
"What did you do?" he demanded.
"I can't help genetics." Onyx shrugged, hardly phased by the fact that Green was practically choking him. "She was born that way."
"I'm not talking about Turquoise, I'm talking about you! You're a monster, a genetic freak. What you are is impossible!"
"Noooot entirely, my good friend." Onyx stated, closing his eyes. "Oh, and I meant the impossible part, I already know I'm a monster, a genetic freak. Jade has them too. Born that way."
"You're meaning to tell me that Jade was born with ears and a tail?" Yellow asked, her curiosity kicking in.
"In most cases," Onyx stated, smacking Green's and off his throat.
"Then what about me, huh?" Green said. "What was that?"
He shoved Green off him and stood, pacing.
"That's magic." Onyx answered simply. "Quite honestly, there's a difference between artificial's and natural's. Natural's usually grow into their powers when they hit puberty, but it seems like her powers were unleashed all at once like an artificial. But artificial's have a power unleash way early on in their life span, early as infantry."
"Onyx, you're not making sense." Yellow shook her head. "Scents? Natural's? Artificial's? What does all that mean?"
"And is something going on with me, as well?" Green asked, standing up, anger quelling curiosity. "What happened with Kristoff wasn't normal, I know that."
"Of course it wasn't normal." Onyx waved his hand dismissively, his tail wagging back and forth, as if reacting to his wild thoughts. "We should find that other girl and allow Blue a moment to rest. I have a few things I need to ask her, anyways."

"You're special, Turquoise."
"Agate told me that all daddies say that just to make their kids feel good."
"No, Turquoise... You're really special."
Turquoise jerked her head up from the river water, breathing deeply as her bangs stuck to her forehead.
It was a small snippet of conversation that she recalled from her time before It happened. She barely remembered her time in Pallet, but she remembered following Agate around a bit, pestering him for a pokémon from his mother, bragging about how her mom and dad always told her she was special and how that was reasoning for her to have a pokémon.
"You're stupid!" Agate yelled at her then, shaking his little fists, fed up with her antics. "All moms and dads say that to make their kids feel happy! Stop kidding yourself!"
In which she promptly ran home to her father, sobbing. Her father lifted her on his lap, stroking her hair and smiling, telling her she was special, how Agate was just being stupid, and no matter how many times Turquoise had repeated what Agate had said, her father simply repeated, over and over again: "No, Blue, I mean, really special."
It was one of the few fleeting memories that she had of her life before It, and even though it was a rather bad memory of Agate, she held onto it. She always assumed that her father simply said she was really special was so that she would calm down. But now, as she was growing into her powers, she knew that her father knew.
"T-T-Turquoise."
She blinked as she recognized the voice, turning slightly with a smile. The girl was roughly sixteen years of age, with dark purple hair that fell a bit past her shoulders and amber eyes that stared at her timidly. Her pikachu hoodie was pulled up, the sleeves rolled up to her elbows, a light blue t-shirt undernieth with a small flower design. She wore gray shorts and brown boots, with a purple beaded bracelet with a silver heart charm hanging from it. Next to her, floating faithfully with its flower, was a Floette.
She shifted slightly, staring at her, then spoke.
"What are you doing?"
Turquoise chuckled at her timid nature.
"Nothing in particular, Eon. Just clearing my head." she responded, leaning back onto the grass. Eon glanced over her sopping wet form.
"By dunking your head in water?"
"Naturally!"
A brief pause.
"What happened?" she asked timidly. Turquoise stood, folding her hands behind her head.
"I just ran into some familiar faces, is all."

"What are you?" Green asked, sitting at a table with Blue, Yellow, and Onyx next to him.
"A gijinka." Onyx responded.
"You mean like the fanart?" Blue asked.
"Yes."
"Which pokémon are you?" Yellow asked, though a little more hesitantly. Seems she was still coping with what had witnessed in the forest.
"That's fairly obvious." Onyx said, crossing his arms and leaning back. "But for those who don't know, I'm a flareon.
"Are you..." Green trailed off, trying to find the right words for what he was trying to say. "Common?"
"Natural borns are rare, artificial born are... easier to come by."
"What are you?"
"Artificial born."
"Explain that." Green demanded.
"Natural borns are easy enough. They're born naturally. I've only encountered one other natural born in my lifetime, and from what I know, they usually began experiencing change when they hit puberty." He ran a hand through his hair. "Jade is that natural born. She usually went through bouts of extreme exhaustion or huge bursts of energy while adjusting to the changes. Her ears and tail grew in at that point, and sometimes she simply lost control of her powers. Of course, as she grew up, she gained control, but still..." he shivered, as if remembering something unpleasant.
"And what about artificial?"
"They're made in a lab." Onyx replied. "Injected with DNA of pokémon when they're as young as infants, and they just wait to see if anything happens." His eyes went distant, looking off to the side. "Most die, but some survive. Sometimes they live past their first few years of life, but it's not like that's something to celebrate..."
"How do you know?"
"The scent." he responded simply. "Natural's blood have a smell where the DNA is perfectly balanced, enough human and enough pokémon. Artificial's have unstable DNA and scent, sometimes fluctuating between to little human or to much, depending on the lab results."
"And you manage to hide them...?"
"With the help of some friends." Onyx placed a hand on the beanie he was wearing. "Looks like I got so pissed that they popped out."
"Green! Yellow! You found Blue!" someone yelped as they were just getting into the conversation. White jogged up to them, looking relieved.
"Yeah." Yellow smiled. "Thankfully, she was unharmed." White sighed.
"I'm so relieved." she glanced out the window. "The others are around the city still, and Black went to the bathroom." White explained, then turning her attention to Blue. "Are you okay? I heard it was quite a fall..."
"I'm fine. A passing trainer on a Wigglytuff caught me." Blue smiled. "She ran off though. Long gone."
"Oh. Well next time we see her, we'll be sure to thank her." White nodded at this. "I'll contact everyone else, tell them to get back here, then we can think about our next move."
"Sweet!" Onyx grinned. "We're gonna get some food for Blue, it's nearly eleven and she still hasn't eaten!"
"Okay!" White smiled brightly, already flicking through the new numbers added onto her contact list. She walked out of the room, no doubt to find Black and tell him the great news.
"Alright, so here's the deal." Onyx said, a serious look on his face. "I'm not going to keep hiding it forever. I need to find someone who can hide Jade's ears in case," he paused for a moment. "In case something happens to me."
"What could possibly happen-" Yellow began to ask before Onyx shot her a look.
"You know about the N.O., and my head is on the chopping block. You're telling me that everything's going to be fine?"
"No, of course not." Yellow said, shaking her head. "But who do you expect to help? I don't think I'm capable of anything outside of healing and slight telekinesis... and maybe something else. But that's it."
"No, I know that." Onyx said, waving his hand dismissively. He turned his attention to Green. "But you, however-"
"Out of the question. I don't have any powers like that."
"Is that denial or are you truly an idiot?" Onyx asked. Green was silent for a moment. "Do you know why the N.O. does testing before the executions?"
"I feel like, wether we answer yes or no, we're going to find out." Blue muttered, looking up at him.
"Bingo, Blue." Onyx smiled. "They test for gijinka genetics. Usually, only one in twenty kids have it, and only about an eighth of those have enough to actually affect their physical looks, like with ears or tails appearing. Another fourth has a different affect. Instead of ears and tails, they get powers, like spell casting."
"But you have physical attributes as well as spells." Blue said, rubbing her temples as she tried to wrap her head around what she was saying. "Are you a rarity?"
"No. I'm a different case all together." Onyx responded. "Anyways, they test them for traces, any traces at all. If they do find them, they try to bring out both phenomenon, the physical prowess and the spell casting. Few and far between, there are survivors that have both, they are called Perfect Artificial's. More often then not, they get artificial's with the physical attributes and that's it."
"Do you get to perform pokémon moves with this?" Blue asked. "Like, can you use Flamethrower?"
"Yes." Onyx nodded.
"So how does that make natural's any different from these perfect artificial's?"
"Because spell casting and pokémon moves are two completely different things." Onyx stated. "Think of it like cooking and baking. They're similar, in a way, but completely different at the same time. Different processes and items are needed for both. As for spell casting and moves, it's something like this. Spell casting requires a pattern, so to say. Most of the spells come from tomes and runes. Reciting the runes, if you can read them, casts the spell. Moves, however, is more of an instinctual thing. You activate the move and attack, not with a pattern or a memorization, but an instinct that already taught you the move. Make sense?"
"I... suppose." Yellow muttered, brow furrowed.
"So you're saying," Green muttered, rubbing his temples. "That I can see these patterns and cast the spells?"
"Bingo."
There was a long silence, giving all three time to think. Green was slightly panicking for a moment. Onyx called Jade a natural, which meant she was born with the gijinka powers, but he never said a word about him. Was he enhanced in a lab? What if he was even made in a lab? If so, who was in charge? Who wanted this done to him, and why did it not start kicking in till now? Could it have been a family member? It had to be, he remembers nothing but being with family his entire life.
Green closed his eyes, grinding his teeth together in frustration.
"Am I natural or artificial?" he asked. Onyx looked at him for a long time, then averted his gaze.
"Artificial."

Can I clear my conscience if I'm different from the rest? Do I have to run and hide? Oh, oh, oh, oh. I never said that I want this. This burden came to me, and it's made it's home inside. Oh, oh, oh, oh. If I told you what I was, would you turn your back on me? And if I seem dangerous, would you be scared? I get the feeling just because, everything I touch isn't dark enough. If this problem lies in me... I'm only a man with a candle to guide me. I'm taking a stand to escape what's inside me. A monster, a monster, I've turned into a monster. A monster, a monster, and it keeps getting stronger.
